KEVT was audible here but well under KGYN in OK before the scheduled
test. I detected no difference after midnight MST with KGYN still on
top. But I checked again just after 1:00 AM MST and found KEVT dominant
and well on top of KGYN.

KEVT is 626 miles and KGYN is 292 miles from me. KGYN is also
directional towards me.

Did anyone to the east try them during the 2nd hour of the test? I know
that would be getting pretty late in the Eastern time zone. Here in
Denver they sounded the same after MST as they did before with a
signal well under KGYN. But when I checked again just after 0100 MST I
found them well above KGYN. I got a great recording of their full ID

made the switch to day power/pattern at 0100 instead of MST.

Did purchase the Sony SRF M85V for $24.99. Excellent sensitivity
selectivity. Has the digital 10 hz tuning.

I believe the reason Fred Meyer is selling these radios at 1/2 price is because
these radio have a analog broadcast tuner for the TV channels. The radio had a
consumer alert message taped to the plastic explaining the Feb. 17, 2009 switch
to digital broadcasting.

Thanks Gary for the Fred Meyer tip.

Thank you for recommending the performance of the Sony SRF-M85.

Digital tuning of the M85 beats the SRF59. You don't have to mess
with a tiny thumbwheel with its impossible tuning. It does splits.
The sensitivity is equal or better than the SRF59 and much more
selective than the M37V with equal sensitivity on MW. I bought mine
about a year ago so things might be different now but I suspect they
should be the same. The performance is exceptionally close to that of
the Sangean DT200V which I believe would be the best if it did splits.

2007-12-17 Thread D1028Gary
Dennis and Kevin (in AZ):

Thanks for the information on the SRF-M85 and SRF-M85V, it is much
appreciated.

Now, I can clearly recall some communication with Powell (W4OPW) that I
had before the current shootout. Paul recommended the SRF-M85 as a great
competitor for the 2008 Shootout (just like Kevin mentioned today). I
looked everywhere for a SRF-M85 but couldn't find one, only the SRF-M85V,
which was everywhere. After buying the SRF-M85V armband model at the local
Fred
Meyer, I gave it a brief daytime test on the usual fringe stations (KONA-610,
CFAX-1070 and KOHI-1600) and was not very impressed (it couldn't get any of
them). Maybe I got a lemon, but my XYL also has an SRF-M85V, and that one
couldn't get the fringe stations either. I concluded, reluctantly, that Sony
changed something in the SRF-M85V relative to the SRF-M85, and had to tell
Powell that impression, and that I didn't think the M85V would stand a chance
in the very rough 2008 Shootout.

Dennis, if your M85V does a great job on daytime fringe reception, I
would be willing to change my plan-- please let me know what you think.

Actually its a SRF-M85V. The model Kevin bought and

around $30 something. They did something BAD to the
AM, as it doesn't work as well as the older ones.
Maybe there was a bad run of them, or they just
cheapened them up.

Kevin,

Thanks very much for your information on the SRF-M85, it is much
appreciated.

If I can somehow find a new SRF-M85 to purchase (not an SRF-M85V), and
a supplier to recommend to other IRCA members, I would be very happy to
include it in the 2008 Shootout.' But it seems to me that Sony has
discontinued
it, and that the replacement SRF-M85V just can't compete on sensitivity with
the SRF-59, SRF-M37V, and DT-200VX (all reviewed in the current shootout on
dxer.ca). The next shootout, with the top-of-the-line Made in Japan
SRF-T615 and the C.Crane SWP, will be even rougher yet.

[IRCA] KEVT DX Test

2007-12-17 Thread Barry McLarnon
1210 was very rough here last night - not only WPHT to contend with,
but when they were nulled somewhat, the channel was awash in IBOC
hiss from 1200 (WOAI and/or WCHB). And with a local 50 kW on 1200,
going to LSB to reduce the hiss was not an option. However, I did
hear some Latino music under WPHT at times during the test period.
For instance, here's a clip that starts at about 0404:30 EST:
http://topazdesigns.com/ambc/audio/unid-1210-0405-17dec07.mp3

If anyone happens to have a recording of what KEVT was doing at that
time, I'd appreciate it if you would take a listen and compare this
clip to it.

It's unfortunate that KEVT couldn't send any special signals during
the test, as that would've made it a whole lot easier to hear.
Nevertheless, any test is much appreciated!

Barry

ps: for the record, KQMS test not heard (surprise, surprise!). I
didn't try for KLAA.

 mentioned today). I
looked everywhere for a SRF-M85 but couldn't find
 one, only the SRF-M85V,

 fringe stations (KONA-610,
CFAX-1070 and KOHI-1600) and was not very impressed
 (it couldn't get any of
them). Maybe I got a lemon, but my XYL also has
 an SRF-M85V, and that one
couldn't get the fringe stations either. I
 concluded, reluctantly, that Sony
changed something in the SRF-M85V relative to the
 SRF-M85, and had to tell
Powell that impression, and that I didn't think the
 M85V would stand a chance
in the very rough 2008 Shootout.

What I said earlier, and I will repeat for everyone,
that there NEVER was a SRF-M85. It always had the V. I
made a mistake. Someone else posted their 2 SRF-M85V's
were great, but the original price was close to $50,
so they might have done something to the AM or there
was a run of bad ones. Who knows

Actually, local QRM is rough on both of us. I can't hope to get
JOUB-774 or JOBB-828 like you can on the M37V, because of KTTH-770 and
KGNW-820.
The M37V really has it tough here because of KSUH-1450, wiping out 1410-1640,
hi. The SRF-59, though, can slice KSUH in half, receiving Port Angeles-1450

[IRCA] KEVT test here a maybe

2007-12-17 Thread George Sherman
I listened first 2+ hours. 1210 mostly dominated by WPHT, rare CFYM-SK (classic
rock) 2nd, possible KEVT rare KHAT-WY (sports) about tied for third most
dominant station. KUBR-TX spent a few minutes atop briefly with English IDs
listing many stations in a break from their Spanish Chrisian format briefly
heard KGYN-OK. The possible KEVT was Spanish music, some definitely Mexican
type. I heard I think brief talk at 2:50 am CST that I heard or imagined as La
Raza, not sure, during a musical selection that included a tuba. Don't think
it could be anyone else in US, but don't know if any Mexicans were on that have
made it this far north. I stupidly didn't set up the tape recorder, as I was
confident I'd get a clear ID. It came in real good at times while playing
music. 73, George S., MN

Hello Brett,

Very pleased that you are impressed with the SRF-59's hot little AM
receiver! You are the 11th IRCA member who has reported using the SRF-59, and
11 out of 11 have been very impressed.

A couple of tricks you might try with the tiny radio is using a tripod
to mount it, so it can completely null out your locals, like what Kevin here
in WA has done. Or, you can place it right on top of a Quantum Loop's
rotating bar antenna, for a huge signal transfer (even with Q-multiplication).
 You
can chase TA's with it (mine has logged 3 TP's so far), or because of its
3-ounce weight, use it as a mean, lean traveling DX machine.

For those of you still sitting on the fence, Brett's report is one more
glowing testimonial to motivate you to join in the fun!

73 and Best Wishes,

With Amazon's price, I couldn't resist. Mine's on the

TP's! Hi!

 Hello Brett,

Very pleased that you are impressed with the
 SRF-59's hot little AM
receiver! You are the 11th IRCA member who has
 reported using the SRF-59, and
11 out of 11 have been very impressed.

A couple of tricks you might try with the tiny
 radio is using a tripod
to mount it, so it can completely null out your
 locals, like what Kevin here
in WA has done. Or, you can place it right on top
 of a Quantum Loop's
rotating bar antenna, for a huge signal transfer
 (even with Q-multiplication). You
can chase TA's with it (mine has logged 3 TP's so
 far), or because of its
3-ounce weight, use it as a mean, lean traveling DX
 machine.

For those of you still sitting on the fence,
 Brett's report is one more
glowing testimonial to motivate you to join in the
 fun!

Re: [IRCA] Might mites Ultra Light SRF-59 DXing

2007-12-17 Thread D1028Gary
Hello Craig,

Get ready to join the revolution!

By the way, you don't have to give up chasing TP's on the SRF-59, just
because you are far inland. You can inductively couple almost any antenna to
the SRF-59's mighty 1.75 inch ferrite bar, or plug a beverage into a Quantum
Loop's rotating bar antenna, then stand the SRF-59 right up on top of the
bar for great signal transfer. Here in WA, Kevin on Bainbridge Island (the
father of the Ultralight term) has done some fantastic experimentation with
tripod mounting, QL signal transfers, etc. Personally, I haven't had much
time
to try his experiments, but they are very innovative.

Yes, receiving TP's barefoot on an SRF-59 (or an SRF-M37V) is one of
the greatest DX thrills you can imagine, but using external antennas (in
creative ways) to log them can be almost as fun, hi.

   73 and Good DX,

   Gary (Chief SRF-59 Promoting Culprit)
