[IRCA] W Radio slogan

2008-01-11 Thread Martin and Wendy Foltz
I noticed the past week that XETRA-690 was using a slightly new slogan, "W
Radio, La Voz del Pueblo". They also use "6-90 AM".

I also heard a station using the slogan on 990 kHz on my TRF this past week. I
don't know who that was but it might be a new slogan used on the whole network.

[IRCA] A tad of listening

2008-01-11 Thread Donald K. Kaskey
Mostly same ole, same ole..but of some interest here were:

1160 San Quentin BCN noted cutting KSL up fierecely around 0600 PST
1/11.

Both Redding stations (1330 & 1460) dominant from 1700-1720 PST 1/11.
These are pretty rare down here.

Someone with 'Fridays Timeless Favorites', rather nostalgia type music
found atop 1490 for a short spell around 1715 1/11. Soon faded out.
Another nostalgia station
in tight null of KPAY/KKDD 1700-1720 PST 1/11...Gilroy was nowhere to
be found, so they must have been off unless they switched formats from
spanish to nostalgia (fat chance). Seemed to be looped in a
Pendleton/Santa Barbara direction but thought both of them were talk?
Was getting weaker as we neared 1730.
Nothing else very exciting.

Seemed to be a low frequency hum on 1420. Anyone off frequency here?

[IRCA] 2007 WRTH?

2008-01-11 Thread Scott Fybush
Now that my summer/fall home renovation and addition project is finally
over, I'm turning my attention to excavating the room formerly known as
my office/DX shack, which ended up turning into storage during much of
the project. And in the process of rearranging the shelves and getting
everything set up again, I realize I never got around to buying a 2007
World Radio TV Handbook.

Before I go ordering one at list price, which seems kind of silly at
this point, does anyone have one that they're parting with now that the
2008 is out? I'll be happy to reimburse for postage and a few bucks
beyond that, too - or to trade for a 2008 Tower Site Calendar, if you'd
prefer. (The completist in me likes having a set that goes back to the
early 70s with no gaps...)

No reason to keep this on the list - feel free to reach me offlist at
scott at fybush dot com if you can help out.

Thanks and 73!

I like that. Yesterday while fishing in Wassaw Sound, coastal Georgia, I
took my Ultrachazzwozzerlite to hear what I could hear. While sitting in
the boat, my buddies looked at me tuning the M37V and asked if I was

Heh. I'll have a rollicking good time with my SRF59 regardless of the label
we choose for the device. I enjoy these debates, though not quite as much as
nulling full-power pests with my ultra-light ULR, a.k.a. Ultra-Light Radio,
a.k.a. some rather foul on those rare occasions when reception just happens
to be bad and the ULR or whatever we are going to call it doesn't have the
ability to create a signal from nowhere. At my local bakery we have
something called a Nothing. It weighs much less than a (insert name of
device here) and is delicious. Maybe we can use the term Nothing. With this
device, you can even get something for notthing... all kinds of marketing
opps.

2008-01-11 Thread John H. Bryant
Colin,

I've not heard from you in response to my note asking for your phone
number and whether I could call you this weekend. I fear that I may
have (completely unintentionally) hurt your feelings related to the
mechanics of putting the Ultralight Firsts and Records list on
DXer.ca. For whatever I said, I'm really sorry and I would like
to talk to you about that soon, if I could call you at a mutually
convenient time.

Also, I decided to respond outta the group to your upload yesterday
about the term "Ultralight." I was originally going to upload this to
the group as I routinely would but perhaps this is a better
method of communicating a very different view of your terminology concerns.

Colin,

I respectfully but profoundly disagree. An Ultralight aircraft is
just that an Ultralight Aircraft. If some people wish to call
them "Ultralights" for convenience, and they do that is fine with
me. An UltraLight radio is a radio that our Definitions Committee has
defined, approved or certified (you may use the term of your choice)
as an "Ultralight." If any of us wishes to refer to those particular
radios simply as "UltraLights" or "Ultralights" for convenience, that
is completely their privilege, IMHO. The proper term would not be
"Ultralight Radio"(ULr) as you propound but rather "Pocket Radio
Certified as 'Ultralight' by the Definitions Committee of the
Informal Ultralight Radio Enthusiast Interest Group" (PRCUDC of the IUREIG)

Re: [IRCA] [Bulk] Internet radio carriage blocked overseas

2008-01-11 Thread Mark
Greetings Saul

I'm on the Mac platform. A program called Radioshift from Rogue Amoeba

http://rogueamoeba.com/radioshift/

streams the channel and also allows you to set a time period to record the
stream. There must be a similar program for the Windows platform.

Fortunately, as pointed out in follow-up postings, there are work-arounds.

Re: [IRCA] Ultralight - what should I get?

2008-01-11 Thread Steve Ratzlaff
I like the term "Ultralight" for the little pocket radio and will continue
to use it, and hope the name isn't changed. I have a friend who built his
own Ultralight aircraft and have had numerous rides in it. I don't have any
problem differentiating between the aircraft and the radio when seeing the
term used on this radio list.

Some of what radiofeeds.co.uk has is largely dependent on readers reporting
updates.

I found several stations via their site that I like to listen to.

Re: [IRCA] Internet radio carriage blocked overseas..A SOLUTION!

2008-01-11 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Saul:

When you click to listen, the popup that appears on your screen is what
detects your IP address.

Go to www.radiofeeds.co.uk
If you want to locate a specific station, just hit Ctrl+F, type in the
station name and hit Next.

The way radiofeeds.co.uk works is that it provides you with the DIRECT mms,
pls, rm or other stream link. There is no embedded player, and there is no
IP address detection.

It works, I use it all the time.

[IRCA] Internet radio carriage blocked overseas

2008-01-11 Thread Saul Chernos
I tried to access County Sound Radio 1566 in Guildford U.K. over the
Internet (a colleague there sent me the link when I told him that I'd DXed
the station). Came up with the following:

http://194.105.69.57:80/radio.asp?id=31

You must be in the United Kingdom to listen to the County Sound stream.
Your IP address appears to be from 'Canada'.

Why can I no longer listen?

Licensing terms which came into effect on 1 April 2006 mean that UK
commercial radio stations wishing to simulcast on the internet outside the
UK now have to pay additional fees to do so. Many stations have taken the
view that at this time, the price of the rights being charged by rights
owners (the record companies) to stream via the internet outside the UK is
too costly. Consequently, these stations must restrict their streams to the
UK to avoid incurring additional charges. Please contact the station you are
trying to access if you wish to comment or require further information.

You have been blocked as your geographical location has been identified as
being overseas through your IP address. If you are trying to listen from the
UK but cannot access the stream it is likely that your ISP or company is
routing your connection through the identified country. In this case, please
email [EMAIL PROTECTED] for more information.

2008-01-11 Thread Saul Chernos
Well, since I am a writer/editor, and always harp on people for such errors,
I'll accept your harping in good corrective spirit. An UltraLight Radio
would no doubt be more ultra-light than an ultralight, and the ultralight of
the future may well be equipped with an UltraLight Radio in the dashboard
(for FM Dxers looking for extra height during a tropo opening).

Re: [IRCA] E1 is history

2008-01-11 Thread Gil Stacy
The Passport to World article states that taking swipes at the E1 has become
an online bloodsport but the early problems were resolved, etc. Written
like a well-paid Eton advertiser. Unfortunately the sale by Circuit City
dumped a lot of early models on the public this Xmas season and these "old"
problems have surfaced anew. A buddy and I took advantage of the sale and
each bought the E1XM from CC at great prices. Within the first hour, mine,
serial no. 27xx, inexplicably locked up and other than on/off, no controls
worked. The problem eventually cleared up after ten minutes of button
pushing (no, this wasn't the deliberate "lock" button feature). The next
day it did the same and back it went to CC for refund. I ordered another
immediately as the price was too good not to. That and a 1 year warranty
with Drake service if necessary. Second radio, an earlier serial number,
5xx, works fine. My buddy had intermittent audio on MW depending on how the
radio was held (bad solder joint or internal connector most likely
aggravated by slight board flexure) and a check list of shortcomings. His
went back to CC as well, but by then, the CC stock was gone. It is a feature
rich radio, a great performer and I'm glad to have it.

I think it's the nulling ability that will matter for me. And since the
SRFT615 has selectivity and sensitivity, I will look to see who carries

[IRCA] JOUB 774 fair at 1007 ut

2008-01-11 Thread vroomski

Good morning,

JOUB 774 in fair on the JRC 545 with English at 1007.
This using the H-800 active whip antennna. Gave it a
try on the SRF59, but not strong enough to get by KKOH
splatter. Did null KKOH and got a WBBM ID. At this location
when aiming the ferrite antenna for Japan the antnna is also aimed
in the Reno direction of KKOH.

Received a peaked SRF-59 radio from Gary. It seems
more selective than a stock model. KFMB 760
has a nice signal this morning despite KXL 750 being
in the same direction.

Dennis,

I saw the report on the Ch 2 news tonight and yes, that was quite the
tornado, An E1. Seaside has had an E0 back some years ago. I sure glad
you were safe. Never seen a tornado in person, and I hope not to.
