[IRCA] KBRN - "Radio Poderosa" Boerne TX corrected information

2008-02-02 Thread John Callarman
Corrected information from continued logging. "KBRN, Boerne, Texas" ID in
English at top of hour. Slogan is "Radio Poderosa, La Emisora de las Grandes
Eventos" and "Radio Poderosa Ventigo 24 horas." Asks for correspondence to P.O.
Box Ocho cero ocho (808), Boerne, Texas. Plays lively, almost tropical ritmo
music with Christian lyrics in Spanish. I used a little common sense on the URL
I heard them give, which my ears at first translated "ktwvradiofabulosa.com."
Searched for www.radiofabulosa.com and got its website.

Jumped in with the note on the station before I got it fully nailed down.

[IRCA] Radio Fabulosa -1500

2008-02-02 Thread John Callarman
Haven't heard call letters yet, but I'm getting a strong signal on 1500 from
another San Antonio area station that appears to be on with it's daytime CP. It
plays lively music, talks of Christiana and identifies frequenty as "Radio
Fabulosa, La Emisora de Los Grandes Eventos." Spots, in Spanish, for musical
groups performing in San Antonio, and did hear Boerne, Texas in what appeared
to be station ID at 9:27 P.M. CST. Did not hear call letters, though, so I'm
not sure if it is still KBRN. KBRN Boerne has been shown as silent, but it's
daytime CP is for 1900 watts with a north-northwest/south-southeast kidney bean
signal. If it uses this signal after sunset, it's going to make XEDF much more
difficult here. CP Night Power is 15 watts, non directional.

The morning show on Pittsburgh's WPGB (104.7) is the "Quinn and Rose
Show," which is syndicated to several other stations, including WYSL
(1040) here in Rochester. (There's a back story to that - WYSL owner Bob

Good question - one of the NC stations, maybe?

Just thought I'd mention, in connection with 550, that CHLN is
definitely gone now. I think they pulled the plug 3 or 4 days ago.

Re: [IRCA] OTH radar scrapped by Ottawa

2008-02-02 Thread Milspec390
A customer years ago leased part of his transmitter site to a military OTH
activity. Our customer was most impressed by the 'intelligence' of the system,
in that upon sensing RF activity on a given freq, it would quickly qsy or not
emit there at all.

Interesting, in light of the wreckage created by CODAR, HD, and other grains
of sand which forsook the beach and took up residence in the human eye.

Another fine example of how bureaucratic thinking - now there's a picture -
lags technological progress.

[IRCA] 2008 Cabin Fever DX Sprint

2008-02-02 Thread John H. Bryant
Friends,

Gil Stacy and I, along with several others have been contemplating
organizing a fun event... simultaneous DXing... in the near
future. Gil and I became the committee that organized it. The
following announcement should be spread far and wide. We hope that
most of you will seriously consider joining Gil and I for a few hours
at the end of February for this absolutely fun event.

The 2008 Cabin Fever Ultralight MW DX Sprint

Stuck in the Winter Doldrums? Seeking relief? The 2008 Cabin Fever
Ultralight MW DX Sprint will take place between 30 minutes before
local sunset on February 29, 2008, through 30 minutes after local
sunrise on March 3, 2008. Participants may choose to enter using
either of 2 classes of recognized Ultralight radios in any or all of
three scoring categories: total number of stations heard, top 5 DX
stations heard in the Americas, and top 5 DX stations heard
worldwide. Participants choose a total of four hours listening time
between the above dates. The primary purposes of this event are not
to establish winning scores, but to foster camaraderie among
participants, and to demonstrate that enjoyment can be had in our
chosen hobby with minimalist equipment, at very low cost, requiring
only a willingness to sit at the dials. There are no prizes in this
competition. Each participant will receive a certificate and high
scores will be recognized. Rules, entry requirements, FAQs, and
contact information are located in the Ultralight Files Area at
www.dxer.ca Questions may be sent to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Gil Stacy and John Bryant, Co-chair

Some people will insist on calling this a "contest," but it is
not. There are no prizes and everyone who enters the event is a
winner and receives a certificate to prove it. We have worked quite
hard to make the event simple to enter and fun to be a part of; we
also hope that the structure of the event will sort of automatically
showcase this new aspect of our hobby and maybe advance the state of
the art a little bit.

Please take a minute to go to the Ultralight Files section of dxer.ca
and download the PDF that has the Rules and FAQs.. and please contact
the Committee at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] if you
have n questions or if you are thinking about joining us.

[IRCA] Two new catches on SRF-59 ULR in Toronto

2008-02-02 Thread Saul Chernos
550 WSVA VA Harrisonburg - Feb 1 0625 - When I turned the SRF59 on, and
could detect no strong stations at the bottom of the dial, I thought I might
need a new battery for the Sony ULR. As it turned out, CIAO 530 Brampton ON
was off-air, and that was likely the Turks and Caicos in there. 550
meanwhile yielded an ID for NewsRadio 550 WSVA and ads for Broadway Nursery,
Harrisonburg Ramada; and then weather (28 degrees and freezing rain. Strong
signal at times, mostly the dominant one. This is new to my Toronto log.
WKRC Cincinnati also heard. WGR Buffalo NY returned to the air very soon
afterwards, halting this fun.

? 550 - Feb 1 0635 - who would play Anne Murray's Can I have this dance? I
was getting strong PA/VA/MD/OH at the time and am blocked to the west.

? 560 - Feb 1 around 0630 - calls sounded like WPGP, mention of a NewsTalk
104.7. Also - and possibly a separate station - ads mentioning fairfax and
Cooper Falls. later a mention of Pittsburgh. If the one mentioning 104.7 is
Frostburg MD, which is reasonably close to Pittsburgh, that would be off -
owners are different.

? 540 - Feb 1 0620-0645 - Soft religious hymns, no IDs heard. I strongly
presume WGTH Richlands VA, but are there other possibilities?

* 540 WWCS Canonsburg PA - Feb 1 0725 - Radio Disney music and programming,
PA ad. New to Toronto log.

? 960 - Feb 1 0730 - Station on 960 gave ID that included 1400.

It's not looking very good. Yes, there's a headline
for it on www.nasa.gov and when you open it up (
http://www.nasa.gov/topics/universe/features/across_universe.html
) they have a good, but basic article about this
special event. However, the key to it all is that it
will be made over NASA's "Deep Space Network". I'll
admit, I never heard of it either, but doing a little
more digging, I found
http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/deepimpact/tech/dsn-article.cfm
which explains that the frequencies are about 100
times those used for FM radio stations.

Since FM broadcasters use 88 to 108 MHz, 100 times
that would be in the neighborhood of 10 GHz. I don't
have any 10 GHz receivers, nor do I plan to acquire
any in the near future. But I have to admit that it is
an interesting idea. I hope it goes well for NASA.

2008-02-02 Thread Christopher Johnson
I am about 35 miles from them. When I stopped to listen to them, a female
anncr. was saying that they were running 25Kw. today and that the engineer was
tweaking some things today. She was asking for signal reports and giving out
their phone # as : 828-884-9427..They were noticably louder here in
northern S.C. Ground conductivity in this area is quite poor. Pisgah Forest is
about 25 miles SW of Asheville, N.C.73, Chris Johnson..K2FO...The

[IRCA] WOIR 1430Khz

2008-02-02 Thread Bill Coppage
When I was engineering WOIR 1430Khz in Homestead, Fl, back in the early 1980's,
they received a STA for 5 Kw day-time to overcome interference from a new cuban
broadcaster. That station has been gone for some time and WOIR is currently
not switching to their night pattern or power as required by their license. It
would be interesting to find out if anyone is hearing that 5 Kw nda in other
parts of the us or Canada. Bill Coppage n4ep

Re: [IRCA] Beacon ZLS

2008-02-02 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
Airnav.com shows ZLS is actually on 526 kHz and is located on Long
Island, Bahamas. Power is listed as 500 watts. Even though it is in the
Bahamas it is owned by the USCG.
