Nick and Others, 738 is a very loud het currently (0740) on the SRF-39FP with the 6.25" transplanted antenna, but no audio yet. Re: [IRCA] AZ DX
Dan, I wonder if it has to do with the poorer grounding in AZ being so dry? I know the GYers in LV are nearly impossible to log these days and also the GYers in the Coachella Valley (Palm Springs), but there is a fair distance involved too. I have quite a few AZ stations heard & QSL'd through the years, but it has been over a 40+ year period. KTNN-660 I can get when phasing Calgary and 1580 pops through with Radio Disney at times. Then 1060 Tempe on rare AU occasions and also 1330 Tucson. Sedona-780 occ u/KKOH also. The rest of what I have heard in the past 10 years mainly have been DX Tests. The old KOY on 550 I used to get maybe once or twice a year in the old days. I have not heard 550 Phoenix in 20 years now. The only time I logged 620 Phoenix was once when KPOJ was off during AU cx. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin KAVT Reception Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] KOPT-1600 goes public
Scott, I tune by KOPT often and I missed this one. Thanks. Both stations in the Valley now have dropped Progressive Talk (Albany 990 and now Eugene 1600). A shame. KPOJ-620-Portland still is. One of the first AA stations. KOAC gets into Eugene "Very" well with their low frequency and 5 KW. They cover with near local signal Portland & Eugene. Why OPB needs 1600 in beyond me. I hope they don't go IBOC. So far no OPB AMers are IBOC, but the Jefferson Public stations on AM are mostly IBOC (at least 1490-Yreka, 1230-Talent, 950-Roseburg). So far 1280 Eugene isn't. Now Eugene will have two NPR type stations on AM. At one time 1600 Eugene was a top rated Top 40 Rocker as "KASH". How times have changed. But so was 950 Roseburg (KYES).

[IRCA] KOPT-1600 goes public
According to my 10watts.com change report tonight, KOPT 1600 in Eugene has flipped from progressive talk to public radio, with Oregon Public Broadcasting buying the station from Churchill. This extends OPB's reach to the south - it's currently heard in Portland, Corvallis (KOAC 550) and most of eastern Oregon, but public radio in southwestern Oregon comes from Eugene's KLCC 89.7 and KWAX 91.1, and from the Jefferson Public Radio chain based in Medford that includes KRVM 1280 in Eugene...which means Eugene will now be the only city (that I know of, anyway) with two public radio stations on the AM dial! s ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] Ferrite rods
I was looking through the Stormwise site and noticed a couple of interesting things. First, they list a new ferrite rod that is 12.3" long and 1" diameter. It's a ferrite compound more suited to the broadcast band. It won't be available until they reach a minimum order amount. I said I'd take two. I intend to compare them to the larger ferrites I have, and the copper tube loops. If they work as well, then putting two of these new, smaller loops at 90 degrees to each other will be quite useful. Perhaps as a replacement for the two copper loops in the back of my truck. They are small enough that they may also work on the back window shelf of a car. The second thing that may be of use to the Ultralight modifiers is a smaller ferrite antenna with a pair of coils on it. It appears like it would work as a replacement for the stock ones. Re: [IRCA] "Hot-Rodded" DT-200VX Digital ULR is a Reality
Mike, The center tap may not be for the oscillator. For instance in the 39/49/59's the ferrite bar has 5 leads as well. Two connect the short coil to the long coil in series. Two leads are the far ends of the connected coils and these go across the variable capacitor. I assume the M37 is varcator diode driven to introduce capacitance. The smaller coil is moved along the ferrite bar to fine tune inductance for proper matching to ensure tracking. The tapped lead is most likely there to keep signal load down and goes directly to AM RF pin. ( Until I hear a better theory. Transformer for impedance match?). In the analogs above, the Oscillator coil is an IF can, L3. 73 Gil ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
Re: [IRCA] "Hot-Rodded" DT-200VX Digital ULR is a Reality
To Mesa Mike, Thanks very much for your comments on the DT-200VX antenna transplant operation. The DT-200VX stock antenna has two separate coils-- a longer base coil, and a "piggyback" shorter coil, for a total of 4 connections. A transplant "surgeon" should attempt a larger-proportion "copy" of the original 2" loopstick, reducing the number of coil turns slightly for the huge transplant loopstick, to compensate for the increased inductance of the much longer ferrite bar. The original connections to the DT-200VX must be exactly observed, in the transplant operation. Mike, I have never considered the SRF-M37V as a suitable candidate for transplant, primarily because of its urban RF issues (spurs and images) in stock form. In these experiments, if your mega-transplant is successful and you get a "nuclear" boost in sensitivity, you will also get a huge increase in any negative effects like spurs and images. You will also have HUGE signal strength from your locals, putting a premium on selectivity. For this purpose, the two successful mega-transplant operations were purposely performed only on two ULR's with great stock resistance to urban RF issues, and decent stock selectivity. Both of these transplant experiments have proven the wisdom of this approach. IMHO, the DT-200VX is the only suitable digital ULR for a mega-transplant... all the others would have mega-problems with spurs, images and selectivity. What we all greatly desire is simply a huge sensitivity boost-- not a huge boost in RF problems. 73 and Best Wishes, Gary **Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. Re: [IRCA] "Hot-Rodded" DT-200VX Digital ULR is a Reality
Hello John, Thanks for your comments on the "mega-transplants." These wickedly juiced-up analog and digital ULR's can already perform at a sensitivity level equal to (or possibly exceeding) the E1 or ICF-2010, but of course they will never compete in SSB, synchronous detection, etc. The DT-200VX was very carefully chosen as a transplant candidate because of its 19 AM memories, high resistance to urban RF issues, and decent stock performance (as fully detailed in the 2007 Shootout on dxer.ca). When you combine these excellent features with ICF-2010-level sensitivity, you can do some SERIOUS DXing on an ocean beach, or anywhere you choose to carry your 7 ounce (total weight) digital dynamo. The age of total DXing freedom has arrived! Thanks also to Kevin Gilbert, who originally recommended the DT-200VX for the 2007 Shootout. 73, Gary **Ideas to please picky eaters. Re: [IRCA] "Hot-Rodded" DT-200VX Digital ULR is a Reality
I had pondered using the loopstick from my DX440 (which is 5 inches long by about a quarter inch diameter) on my SRF-M37V, but the M37V loopstick has 5 wires coming off it, where the DX440's loopstick has only 2. I haven't looked in my DT200V but am curious to know about the size of the ferrite. I have several 10" X 3/8" ferrites and wonder if they will fit in the coil. Can anyone fill me in on if these will fit? Re: [IRCA] "Hot-Rodded" DT-200VX Digital ULR is a Reality
Fascinating. Does this loopstick have just an antenna coil, or does it also have a center-tapped oscillator coil on it? [IRCA] UNID Bluegrass Station on 980
Commuting DX this morning in the car about 0830 Eastern pulled in an unidentified station on 980, mixing with WTEM in Washington DC with bluegrass music, rather strong at times, but with no announcements or IDs (I had to get out of the car once or twice and the station did go into a few deep fades), logged in the Dover, Delaware area. Possibilities? I don't have my materials with me at work but Google isn't much help. It lists WHAW-980 in Weston WV as a possibility, as running some bluegrass but their primary format seems to be mainly classic rock and oldies. May have to try again tonight and tomorrow. [IRCA] "Hot-Rodded" DT-200VX Digital ULR is a Reality
