Surprisingly, going as far as the front door of the room was enough to get away from the computer hash at the other end of the room, as well as well away from the Beverage antennas. Going beyond the door was not very tempting. The cars outside had about half an inch of snow on them (this is next to the warming influence of the Pacific Ocean, and over a week after the start of spring) Results: the best one was the Korean jammer on 1053 which was heard several times at very recognizable level. The others identified for sure were JOUB-774, JOAK-594, and JOAB-693, all at quite readable levels. It seems these radios seem to need a certain signal level, then they deliver quite good audio with not much further increase in level. There were quite a lot of hets, and I'm sure I didn't hear everything possible, but I kept nipping back to the "big iron" radios for a little more hefty DX. Biggest disappointment was the lack of DU loggings. There weren't that many really strong signals from there anyway, though as Dennis mentioned, the het from 738 could probably peel paint (as in fact could 1098 this morning), but the signal from either is so undermodulated, it's not easy to hear audio even with the Beverages and the big radios. The "big iron" logs will be delivered a little later. best wishes, Nick * Nick Hall-Patch Victoria, BC Canada ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] New KYIZ TX site?
Don, With me getting up early (LSR), mostly I do it from Aug-Dec and the rest of the year, if I happen to wake up. My drive now is to hear a new one to get that QSL. If it wasn't for that, I probably would never get get early. I now often set the timer to record a freq. overnight. That helps too. Gone are the days when I would get by with 3-4 hours sleep night after night to catch DX. Now, I hear so much of the same stuff over and over, it gets old quickly. You may take note of my 1330 loggings, the same stuff over and over night after night. Once in a while a new one will pop through, but I probably have DXed this area out for the most part. After all in the past 40 years, I have heard probably 3500-4000 stations and have nearly 3000 QSLs. That is a lot of DX from one area. I got a few hundred in AK and less in Rancho Mirage, but over all 99% of it has been in Seaside/Warrenton. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin KGED QSL Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] Grayland DX 3-29 & 3-30
I'm back from two days of DXing with Chuck and Nick at Grayland. We had two beverages, one at about 310 degrees and another at about 250 degrees. Conditions both mornings were decent for this time of year - not spectacular but well worth the trip out there. There were lots of Asiatic signals and a few from down under, though signal levels were a bit on the low side and at times erratic. Japanese stations dominated both mornings - we probably heard at least 40 of them. Chinese stations were much weaker than normal - the powerhouses like 963 981 945 1377 1323 etc sounded downright anemic. Koreans were OK but not spectacular this morning, and well below average yesterday morning. Yesterday morning's opening was mostly on the low end of the dial, with very few stations heard above 1200. This morning was a bit different - I thought the low end was below normal, mid band was genrally good, high band was good at times but a bit unstable. That was my impression. Some of the highlights for me: three Filippinos on Saturday (594 1206 and 1062, possibly 2 of them on the latter freq), some lower powered NHKs (792 945 1512 1035), Radio Yunost-1377 w/Technopop taking normally dominant CNR to the cleaners, Taiwan Fisheries station on 1593 //738, a mix of stuff on 648 at 1400 Saturday (NHK & China pips mixing at ToH, then VOA in Korean a minute later), Micronesia-1503 good at times this morning with island music, pairs of Aussies on 531 & 891. Maybe more, depending on what I find in my audio and SDR files. Chuck and Nick may have more to add from their perspectives. We'll have a composite log out in a couple of weeks or so. Re: [IRCA] New KYIZ TX site?
Paul, KZIZ used to have a decent signal down here days from their old site. Enough to pretty much block the channel, except around LSS. Now they are 10% of what they used to be. Their new site must have something that keeps the signal down in the direction of the SW. A far cry from their old signal in this direction. Yes, I knew about the printed FCC info on ND Days, Critical Hours, and directional nights with 900w. However, they sure don't sound like 5 KW ND days. Heck, 1540 Bellevue, also 5 KW is much stronger than KZIZ. KZIZ used to be stronger than Bellvue, and they are further.

Even hear TA's in the fall, but DU's are really tough here. Put up a SW Ewe, SW broadband loops with poor results. April seems to be the best month here for weak DU's at best. Clear path to the Southwest, with the nearest hills being about 15 miles away and there only 1,200' at best. I do have power lines about 15' from the Ewe when its in the Southwest direction. Dennis, Bill and Nigel, The TP signals here seemed strongest just after 1300, with 594, 693, 747 and 828 having audio. After that, the signals seemed to weaken out before sunrise. Also met Nick this morning on his way back from Grayland (in order to transfer a modified SRF-39FP), and he mentioned having received four TP's on his stock SRF-39FP Ultralight radio this morning: JOAK-594, JOUB-774, JOBB-828 and the Korean Jammer-1053. They are Non Directional days with 5KW, Non Directional During Critical Hous with 3300W and Directional nights with 900Watts and 3 towers. The night pattern isn't very directional exactly, but it pulls the signal away from the south. The new site is 5 to 10 miles NE of Puyallup and their City of License is "Pacific, Wahsington". I wouldn't expect you to hear much of them day or night at all. [IRCA] New KYIZ TX site?
I have noticed since it was reported last year that KYIZ had moved to their new site, their 1560 freq is really weak here on the North coast days. 1620 is the same and 1420 is basically non existant protecting KITI, which has always been the case, only logging them once in 40 years, even going back to the KREN days. However, KYIZ 1560 is so poor days that I can hardly hear it and skip will cover them. Also non existant at nights (If on?) Either their new site as no signal this way to speak of, or they are now directional day & night both. Anyone know for sure? I have them listed as U2, not U4. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin KGED QSL Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
Re: [IRCA] TP's for 03-30-08
Listened from 1250-1320 and heard very weak audio on 774 and 828. Weak carriers on 693, 747, 774 and 828. Here it was all TP's and no DU's heard per the loop. [IRCA] Unusual reception on 28 March
Sorry for the delayed posting, but I was tied up yesterday. I spent a couple of hours at the dials on Friday night, and found condtions most unusual. Reception of southern stations (AZ, NV, NM) seemed to be enhanced, typical of auroral conditions, and there seemed to be a black cloud over Utah, as I was hearing nothing from there. Even KSL, which is super-dominant here, was pretty much missing. Instead, I was hearing Chicago's WYLL clearly, with KHPP's oldies in the background.Tuning around I noticed the WI and IL stations also seemed to be enhanced for some reason (definitely not typical of auroral conditions). Before the night was out I'd added 3 new stations to the log, including 2 in Indiana (1260 WNDE and 1280 WGBF), doubling my Indiana total in one night. The three new ones also pushed my total stations heard to 1500, so that was a night to remember. 73, Nigel Pimblett Dunmore, Alberta ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
Re: [IRCA] TP's for 03-30-08
Hi Dennis, Interesting you were still hearing TPs this morning. It was all DU here today. Lots of carriers, most of them not terribly strong, but did have readable audio on 1548 and 1116, with traces on 702, 774, and 891. [IRCA] UNID 1710 kHz
Early Sunday Morning, March 30 UNID station on 1710 kHz playing lots of Mexican ballads in Spanish. No announcers or IDs. Nice bottom end on audio. Strong signals, way over the Brooklyn pirate in Hebrew and English. Heard even over power line buzz. I was listening on a car radio traveling from Northern Westchester to Fairfield County, Connecticut. Time: 0915 - 1000 UTC 515am to 6am local time. Is this the pirate from Boston? 1070 CBA also quite strong during this ride. Thanks, Karl Zuk N2KZ _ In a rush? Re: [IRCA] Old Solar Cycle Returns
Which explains the auroral condx earlier this week---sorry I missed it. Was occupied with other stuff, but the broadband loop is GREAT in auroral condx--GY channels can be reduced to 2 or 3 stations. BTW--how to mess up a mini FM dxpedition: So there we are at 2800 ft ASL miles from civilization and come to find one of the nuts gone off the boom clamp on the FM10. Looked everywhere in and out of the truck, no joy. Day saved by a big ol bag of cable ties in the truck---about 10 of 'em threaded through the bolt holes and through/around the mast and she held! No great condx, tho, just usual stuff. We were outside Somerset, PA, just 5 miles from the Flight 93 crash site, and we've heard London, ON several times and one KY station from there! Also nabbed 3 from TX on some Eskip once. We bagged it early and went to the temporary Flight 93 crash site memorial--very moving---I choke up every time I'm there. If you're within driving distance, do it! There's just a certain feeling there Peace, BC Russ Edmunds <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Forwarded to lists: > To: NASA Science News > > NASA Science News for March 28, 2008 > > Three months ago, a new solar cycle began.
