[IRCA] "Super ICF-2010" Full Construction Article Uploaded to DXer.CA

2008-05-20 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

If you have ever wondered how the classic ICF-2010 would perform with a
transplanted 19.5" loopstick, now is your chance to find out.

Designed as a super-sensitive SSB "spotting receiver" to keep up with
newly hot-rodded Ultralight radios (with 20" loopsticks), this monster
portable has already proven its effectiveness at Grayland, Washington,
producing
audio on TP and DU stations that the stock 2010 can only receive as weak
carriers.

Full construction details are provided to create another 19.5"
loopstick model, or an even longer loopstick, if desired. The article has
many
photos expertly added by John Bryant, and includes the results of a daytime DX
"Monster Portable Shootout" between the 19.5" loopstick ICF-2010, a 2010 plus
Quantum Loop combo, a stock 2010, and a 20.25" loopstick SRF-39FP.

Located in the dxer.ca "Ultralight File" section, the article's
link is:

_http://www.dxer.ca/index2.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_view&gid=128&Itemid=
77_
(http://www.dxer.ca/index2.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_view&gid=128&Itemid=77)

Designed for serious TP and TA DXers who would like to organize their
search for transoceanic Ultralight radio targets, this "Monster 2010" is fully
capable of exceptional stand-alone DX performance, especially on isolated
ocean beaches. Hopefully, various experimenters will create their own
"Monster
2010's" using the inexpensive construction materials specified, and enjoy an
exciting new experience in portable DX excitement.

Re: [IRCA] Going to Hawaii and Oahu

2008-05-20 Thread doug martin
Hi. I believe Dale Park is the only active dx-er. I lived on Windward
Oahu from 1978-1987 and found the dx varied greatly depending on where you
were on the island. From the windward side of Oahu, Alaska, Western
Canada, and the U.S. mainland as far east as Chicago. But other islands,
e.g. tonga, samoa, fiji, were rare. From the south shore, these islands
were regulars, with no Alaskans present.
Probably my best catches were WBZ, KYW, Wcau, and WWWE-Cleveland. I had
other east coast stations, but just listed a few. In the other direction,
my best catches were from India on 1134 and Oman with a BBC relay on 1413 kHz.
My favorite was winning a call-in contest on KVOK, Kodiac Ak. On the air,
I told them I couldn't come to the station to get my prize, and asked if
they would send it to me. Only then, after winning the contest did I tell
the announcer that I was in Hawaii.
My biggest disappointments were never getting WJR, WBAL, WWVA, WRVA, or
WBT. These states remained unlogged.

Aloha,
Doug Martin

pretty darn good audio (at least briefly): none

reasonable audios (though often battling w/splash): none

not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise: 1566 oriental
sound to talk, so likely HLAZ.

Burbles in the splatter and noise: none

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter): 774,
1053, 1575 (very erratic strength; Thailand at this time of year seems
surprising to me, but it is greyline, so shouldn't be impossible)

Re: [IRCA] Quite possibly the smallest licensed radio station...

2008-05-20 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
I just changed the Wiki entry but screwed it up in the process. Scribe
Video Center purchased the station for the very purpose of community
broadcasting... and they had more resources then "West Philadelphia
Educational Broadcasting Foundation" which originallyu owned it from it's
inception and was the one who sold it.

In this case, the Wiki entry is accurate for this station. They have
been off the air for quite a while, and appear to have returned to the
air only recently. Not that it matters, as no one can hear them, no

Paul you've indeed heard one of the Knoxville area stations. I googled

Well, I'm in a little bit of a quandry here...

I logged a station that sounded like it was doing local sports play by
play.
At 8:33 PM I heard an ad for "Reams Drugstore" and gave a phone number
as
453-5160 and an address as 250 Middle Creek Road. Then a live announcer,
presumably a Play By Play guy came on and did another quick read for
Reams
Drugs "For Al lYour Pharmacy and Health Care needs".

The address and phone number are in Sevierville, Tennessee.

WKCE is a 1KW Daytimer, WVLZ is a 10KW Daytimer. WCRK is 500 Watts Non
Directional Day, 500 Watts from 3 towers at night.

WCRK is carrying music, per their webstream. WKCE and WVLZ which appear
to
simulcast are running ESPN Radio, per their stream.

None of these stations seem to match exactly what I heard on the radio,
but
are the 3 closest in distance and frequency wise to the area mentioned
in
the drugstore ad.

Any ideas anyone?

Re: [IRCA] UNID'd/Sound-a-like help needed

2008-05-20 Thread HASCALL, DAVID CIV DFAS
Paul - I plugged the mythical "WBTO" into Barry McLarnon's fuzzy search
page and looked at 1360-1440 and got two possiblities for you.

1) WEGO 1410 Concord, NC. The possible fly in the ointment here is that
they are an MRN (Motor Racing Network) station but they only carry one
tiny PRN program but not any PRN races, per PRN's list.

2) WDCO 1440 Cochran GA. They ARE a sports station but do not hit
either MRN or PRN list but that doesn't mean anything.

Good luck and 73,

Ok, so I'm working with a Zenith Royal 705 radio and the dial is off a
little bit.

Now, I know this is going to be a STRETCH to ID and please no one make
any
stupid comments about how "If you want us to hlep, you need to give us
more
information. I'm giving as much information as I have in hopes someone
recognizes my catch.

I got a logging for a station somewhere between to the right (dial wise)
1350 and to the left (dial wise) of 1450.

I heard a local male announcer in a somewhat laidback tone/attitude talk
about upcoming sports broadcasts including what I believe to be a PRN
NASCAR
Race and a baseball game featuring the New York Mets and someone else.
He
then went into the weather forecast and made mention of how Wednesday
through Friday are going to be warm, sunny days.

The call letters SOUNDED ALOT like WBTO, but that's not it.

Any bright ideas or suggestions anyone?

[IRCA] Move of CBDS-690 Pukatawagan MB to FM approved by the CRTC

2008-05-20 Thread Deane McIntyre

The Pukatawagan MB ( a 40 watt relay of CBWK-FM Thompson MB)
to FM (102.5, 200 watts) has been approved by the CRTC:

CBWK-FM – New transmitter at Pukatawagan
1.
The Commission approves the application by the Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation
(CBC) to amend the broadcasting licence for the English-language
radio programming
undertaking CBWK-FM Thompson, Manitoba in order to operate an FM
transmitter at

Pukatawagan to replace its AM transmitter CBDS.
2.
The transmitter will operate at 102.5 MHz (channel 273A1) with an
effective

radiated power of 200 watts.
3.
The CBC indicated that the FM transmitter is intended to replace its
existing
AM transmitter CBDS and that recently, the Mathias Colomb Cree
National Chief
and Council advised the CBC that the CBDS site is contaminated and
they will
proceed to decontaminate it by June 2008. The CBC stated that the FM
transmitter

needs to be operational by this date.
4.
The Commission did not receive any interventions in connection with
this application.

5.
The CBC further advised the Commission that there will be no
simulcast period.
The licensee must then cease operation of its AM transmitter CBDS
Pukatawagan.
Pursuant to sections 9(1)(e) and 24(2) of the Broadcasting Act (the
Act), and
consistent with the CBC’s request, the Commission amends the licence
of CBWK-FM

Thompson by deleting the AM transmitter CBDS Pukatawagan.

[IRCA] AM 1370

2008-05-20 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Around 3:33am, I just heard an ad for "The Tireman" buried in the mud and
then a mention of "NewsTalk 1370 WSPD" after the commercial, going into a
program.

I've also got a sports station that seems to be dominant on 1370Khz. It will
fade down in the mud but still be barely intelligable... and other times
it's about a 6 out of 10 signal wise. I heard several mentions of Colin
Cowheard and Espn radio. I'm presuming this to be Bahakel Communications
WDEF-AM 1370 Chattanooga, TN.

I have not actually heard an *LOCAL* ID from the ESPN Station, but WLOP
Jesup, GA's own website lists them as a FOx Sports Radio Affiliate and
wikipedia.org lists WDEF-AM as ESPN Radio.

WPSD is 5KW Day, Non Directional and 5 KW Nights, with a 3 tower
North/Southeastern Pattern. WDEF is 5KW Day Non Directional and 5KW with a 4
tower Southeast pattern.
