With me, I look on it differently. First off, I do enjoy some talk and
even some stuff on Coast to Coast. Plus with so many talkers on AM
today, that is a plus. A lot less splatter.

Re: [IRCA] Het on 940 out West

2008-09-06 Thread Steve Ratzlaff
I don't think it's KWBY. I can hear the SS of KWBY, and it also just ID'd in
English at TOH and it's best on E/W wire. I can also listen to the het and
switch between my E/W and N/S longwires. The het drops in level noticeably
when I switch to E/W, which is KWBY's direction. I think it's somewhere
closer to Dennis Gibson in California which would agree with my N/S antenna.
I just heard the SS fade up a little and it said something with
"California", "Rahdeeo x" (can't make out). (On the N/S antenna.)
(Saskatchewan also good on N/S wire.) But I'm off to bed now.

Foreign QRM? From Canada? ;-)

Why would we need high-power stations when we have "Coast to Coast" radio?

Re: [IRCA] Thoughts on 500Kw watt radio stations

2008-09-06 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Well, my two cents..

WBZ could have to be highly directional or 500KW would go right out to water
and cover foreign countries that they don't care about.

I think one 50KW non directional full time AM in the central part of each
time zone would be cool. But again, thats just wishful thinking on my part,
lol.

The comment "would make good 500KW stations based upon program format and
location" strikes me. What makes it a good program/format? WJES is playing
"some crappy" music. What makes it crappy? Who's the judge?

I don't think, in the end, having a few 500KW statiions would solve any real
problems. The power bills would be bigger.. and could a 500KW no 750 in
Atlanta sell advertising in Tulsa or Chicago? No, I doubt it. In this day
and age, a 500KW station in the US would serve no one except the DX'er.

[IRCA] Thoughts on 500Kw watt radio stations

2008-09-06 Thread k4ape

Why is radio against me?

The other day Saul and I had a discussion about the fact that there is
nothing to listen to on AM radio. AM BCB radio is pretty B-O-R-I-N-G! A
person can hear just so much of Rush,

and other liberal talkers, just so much country, soul and noise.

However, with football season upon us, and I now have a chance to hear all
my favorite teams that are not shown on television here in the Chattanooga
market. I have been waiting all week to hear the University of Texas game
against UTEP in El Paso, TX. You would think that the station to listen to
would be WOAI-1200 as they carry all the games for UT and all the games for
the Dallas Cowboys.

NOT SO! Wouldn't you know, on 1200, of all the times to _CHEAT_ WJES would
have to be on from out of South Carolina, with some type of crappy music. A
10Kw daytimer has to pick tonight to cheat! Haven't heard from them in over
4 months, but tonight of all nights they have to cheat!

So, I tune around and find that ESPN is playing the Texas game on WMVP-1000
from Chicago. GREAT! I say to myself. But that is short lived as XEEP from
Mexico is fading in and out on top of them and there is a strong het on 999.
All of this would normally be fine, BUT WHY NOW?

What this shows to me is, there needs to be a few, not many, 500,000 watt
stations located around the country -- as there was in the mid 30's. The
stronger power would make it possible to over come foreign QRM, propagation
conditions and semi-local cheaters.

Wouldn't need but maybe 6 stations all total.

Stations I think that would make good 500Kw broadcasters. Based on program
format and location.

WOAI-1200 San Antonio, TX.
WLW-700 Cincinnati, OH
WMVP-1000 Chicago, IL
WBAP-820 Ft. Worth, TX
KYW-1060 Philadelphia, PA or
WPHT-1210 Philadelphia
WBZ-1030 Boston, MA
WSB-750 Atlanta, GA
KFI-640 Los Angeles, CA
KNBR-680 San Francisco, CA
KSL-1160 Salt Lake City, UT
WLAC-1510 Nashville, TN
WAQM-560 Miami, FL

This is just a list, other stations might do a better job with programming,
etc., than what I have listed here.

PLEASE, do not write me with dumb comments like, "Why don't you get
satellite radio?" or "Buy cable television" or "Get Direct TV" I do not have
money for such luxuries nor are they available to people who live this area.

[IRCA] Modified E100 Ultralight TP Loggings to Date

2008-09-06 Thread D1028Gary
Hello Guys,

Very shortly a series of articles will appear in the AM-DX club
bulletins giving full details on the work of three Washington state
experimenters
(John Bryant, Guy Atkins and myself) to create a modified Ultralight radio
with
unprecedented sensitivity and selectivity. This radically transformed E100
has already thrilled us with amazing TP and DU receptions, both with the new
Slider loopsticks (40/44 Litz wire wound on movable coils, shifting along a
ferrite bar to peak DX signals), and an extremely effective Murata CFJ455K5
narrow IF
filter, providing razor-sharp selectivity. John has also succeeded in
adding an inductive coupling loop to the stock ferrite bar, providing a method
for
transferring external antenna DX signals through a simple plug-in jack.

In my own personal experience, this modified E100 can easily outperform
any stock portable on the planet (ICF-2010, E1, etc.). Easily!

To give an indication of what it can accomplish, here is a list of the
loggings made on this DX-chasing monster, both in Grayland and Puyallup, WA.
All these were using the 7.5" Slider loopstick and CFJ455K5 narrow filter:

I see the TPs from Asia are back in full force on the coast. Well, not
so here. I did have a number of fairly decent carriers from the
Japanese powerhouses, which is more than I had yesterday. but the action
here was again from DU. Not quite as good as yesterday, but still with
audio on 13 frequencies and carriers on another 77. Brisbane on 792
was doing particuarly well, and 1116 was better than yesterday.
Frequencies with audio were 567, 594, 639, 702, 738, 756, 792, 829, 855,
891, 1116, 1512 and 1548. Certainly another interesting morning.

[IRCA] Modified E100 Ultralight TP's for 9-6-- Great to Japan

2008-09-06 Thread D1028Gary
Hello Guys,

With conditions restored, the Japanese were booming in here (4 miles
from salt-water Puget Sound), providing a couple of new Ultralight TP loggings.

Around 1255 the band was already pretty lively, with the Japanese
powerhouses of 594, 747, 774 and 828 easily audible on the modified ICF-2010
spotting receiver (30" loopstick). HLCA-972 joined them shortly thereafter.
But
at the maximum dawn enhancement around 1310, a couple of the weaker Japanese
came up in audio enough to be heard on the modified E100 (7.5" Slider
loopstick and Murata narrow filter), for all-time new Ultralight loggings:

558 JOCR Kobe, Japan (weak but clear Japanese audio at 1310)

666 JOBK Osaka, Japan (fair signal with NHK1 program at 1309)

Other than these, the high band signals seemed rather anemic, and 1566
and 1575 were not as strong as usual.

Congratulations also to Colin on receiving his first stock Ultralight
radio TP, JOIB-747. Now perhaps Colin will better understand the raving
excitement of the Ultralight radio enthusiasts who are making dxer.ca one of
the
world's prime AM-DX hobby venues.

 73, Gary

[IRCA] TPs from Orcas Is. Sept 5 and Sept 6

2008-09-06 Thread John H. Bryant
Like Walt up in the Queen Charlottes, yesterday morning showed a
recovery here, much more rapidly than I expected. Conditions were
transitional, with the bigger Japanese, Chinese and Korean guns
present during the first half of dawn enhancement, followed by a very
nice opening to DU land, with only one or two Kiwi stations but a
large handful of the biggest Aussie guns made it in. Actually, it
was one of the better Aussie openings of the last three weeks or so.

This morning was a whole 'nuther story.

Happily, I started a bit early at 1245 (LSR=1335) and the dial was
full of Japanese. Eventually, I had 46 channels of audio, a lot of
it in the fully intelligible 7 strength or better, in some cases,
MUCH better. All of the low band NHK1s were in, with 567 qualifying
for a perfect "10" at S-9+20./ I've never ever heard it so loud. A
bit later, 738 was // 1143 as Taiwan Fisheries... I've been hearing
738 consistently fror a couple of weeks, but this is the first time
that 1143 made it in at very listenable levels. All of the low band
NHK2s were at least 9s, 747, 774, 828 and even 873. Even 891, NHK2
was in relatively well, mixing with two others. A few of the Koreans
and Chinese were around, but on 963, the usual powerhouse CRI Russian
Service was far out muscled by low power NHK1 synchros (!).

The high half of the band was a not quite so powerful, but Japanese
stations were still present all over and 1260 (Sendai), 1350
Hiroshima and 1440 JOWF Sapporo were all dominating their North
American cousins for a while during max dawn.

The band stayed alive for maybe fifteen minutes past dawn (a sign,
here, of very good conditions) with a few DUs showing up at or just
after dawn itself.

The most interesting probable Aussie was playing pops, hosted by a
male, on 1656. PAL doesn't list anything on this frequency, but I
seem to remember something about a new Aussie on this frequency,
maybe Anyone have any info or ideas.

There were hets on almost every TP frequency that did not have audio on it.

I was disappointed that none of the NHK2 synchro frequencies were in
strong enough to really understand when local ID time came around at 1320 UTC.

So, it was a pretty fabulous morning. I hope that this was one of
the mornings that Walt planned to be out on Rose Point, 20 miles from
any civilization. If so, its likely that he could run all his
equipment and charge his car battery off the RF. Wow!!!

I have had a chance the last couple of days to work on some of my
UNID audio from my trip to Grayland 10 days ago. I had recorded the
NHK2 synchro station IDs on 1386 on two different mornings. Both
were marginal, but with Cool Edit, I was able to pull up a pretty
reasonable ID for JOQC, Morioka. I got that confirmed this morning by
a Japanese professional colleague... and a reception report is going
out Monday. FINALLY!!! JOQG is the NHK1 companion to JOQC in
Morioka and is usually what we hear in the fall on 531, often alone
and Morioka is the most northerly of the 4 ten kW synchros on 1386,
so it makes sense that it was them It is sure nice to finally get
an ID, though.

I got the Wellbrook Array up yesterday and spent part of this morning
comparing it to the big Asian Super Loop. The two little Wellbrook
deltas beat it every time... either in raw signal or, especially in
signal/noise ratio. Unfortunately this steep mountainside restricts
my E-W antennas to 100' or less, so I'll continue to use the Conti
Loop toward Australia.

What will tomorrow's dawn bring??? Christmas in September :>)

Re: [IRCA] Trans-World Radio 800Kc

2008-09-06 Thread C B
The mention of TWR on 800 also brings back some memories for me. Years ago,
when you still could, John Wilkins & I would run BOGs on an old farm site North
of Denver International Airport. Wayne Heinen and Chris Knight joined us on
occasion. I had a Drake SW-8 then and the batteries ran out about half way
through our DX session. My back up was a Sony ICF-2002. When I connected the
2002 to an 1800 ft. 115 degree BOG, I distinctly recall arm chair copy of TWR
on the 2002, among other nice loggings! That was not quite an ultralight, but
close Hi!

Thanks for the memory jog!

2008-09-06 Thread Nigel Pimblett

Checked MW at the start; 774 and 828 with Asian reception; I don't seem to
get Asia very well here; 1205 utc. Much later, Down Under doing very well,
891 with solid 7-7.5. Running a health show, first heard 1333 utc, faded
away in heavy splatter 1356.
LWBC a little better today, 153, 180, 189, 234, 279 with 153, 189, 279 the

Nothing for 1737 KUT the one time I checked; the digital/FSK signal on 1736

[IRCA] TP's for 6 Sep 2008

2008-09-06 Thread cafe

2 words. Holy Smoley.

Not sure that Smoley is actually a word... but.
The hills were alive with the sounds of TP's this morning!

Switched on the R8 at 1245 UTC to find audio... everywhere;
558, 567, 576, 594, 612, 639, 702, 738, 747, 756, etc etc...

Dropped that and went to the Eton E1 barefoot -
Japan on 747 and 774 at a "9" level.

Dropped that and grabbed the Sony Prison Radio barefoot
and ran to a window... mini-Disc recorder in hand...

Japan on 747 as clear as a bell... and recorded! (MP3 on DXer.ca later...)
That one event alone (Thanks Gary!) was worth the price of admission
and as exciting as hearing VOA Okinawa on 1178 for the first time in 1975 or
1976

Back to the Eton E1 for a moment... Japan on 828, muddy audio on 837, 918,
927, 936, 945, 954, russian on 963, Korean on 972 (a 9) and then
back to the Ultra-lights.

I concentrated on the most reliable signals like Japan on 747 and 774
and they were hammering all the receivers - left the R8 on 747 and
it never dropped below and "8" for over 15 or 20 minutes.

Wow.

Receivers: Drake R8, Eton E1, Ulrs galore
Antennas: Wellbrook's and bare feet.
