850 KOA CO DENVER 0130 - 0206 04/10/08 While tuning across the dial I heard an ad for Rock Mountain Harley - Davidson. (I knew this would be KOA, so I stayed tuned. This was followed by an ad for the downtown Marriote Hotel. KOA was putting a good solid S-5 signal. But no ID heard at this time. So I continued to monitor 850. There was QRM from WPTB in Statesbore, GA with ESPN radio. KOA was gone, and no ID. Returned to 850 at 0158. There was mention of several Denver business, then into the news. Finally at 0206 I heard the ID. Coming out of Denver weather, a quick ID, Radio 850, KOA Then QSB back under WPTB. {WM-TN] This is the first time this DX season I have heard KOA. Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Re: Application of CKKW-1090 Kitchener ON to move to FMapproved by CRTC
Another thing to keep in mind is that comparing U.S. and Canadian FM powers is like comparing apples and oranges. In the U.S., the quoted power of an FM station with a directional antenna is the power in the direction of maximum radiation. If a station radiates 50kw 350 degrees around the circle but 5kw for 5 degrees either side of due north, the FCC calls it a 50kw station. In Canada, the quoted power of an FM station with a directional antenna is the average of the power in all directions. If the sample directional station above were in Canada, the CRTC would call it a 47.5kw station. The Canadian FM engineering database does show the peak power. (the same figure the FCC reports) For CKKW-FM it's 5kw - maybe not enough to match their 10kw AM coverage but a lot better than 2.1kw! ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] The Ultralight Express keeps rolling
Good morning, Finding some time to check out the airwaves during sunset skip, I was rewarded with the following: WAZX 1550 Smyrna GA 10/3/08 7:30 EDT (2330 UTC) with music and talk in SS. This signal faded in and out and required constant positioning to get past CBE in Windsor, but did get several nice peaks making the SS unmistakable. ID is presumed as I used the NRC AM Log to ID, and their QTH is consistent with the directionality of the received signal. #409 overall and my first new logging on the SRF-59. [IRCA] TPs from Orcas Island: Recovery Underway
I've began to notice that recoveries here, in the fall, are almost always led by the Japanese stations coming back first to be joined a day or so later by the Chinese and Koreans. That is what was going on for me this morning was a good to excellent Japanese morning, with just a few Chinese and Koreans scattered in there, mostly right at dawn. I did an early check at 1215 (all Japanese) and then really DXed from 1345 until 1425 (LSR 1415.) Below 1100, I had audio on at least 2/3 of the channels, with all but a few being at least 7s (language recognition.) The channels that are sometimes JJ, sometimes CC or RR (like 666) were all solidly JJ and I'm pretty sure that I had Okinawa again on 864 it was clearly JJ and not the Hokkaido station. I also had JOVX on 909//1440 and the HBC synchros on 1098// 1287. Things were calmer above 1100, but I still had 20 audios (up from yesterday's FOUR) above 1100. The more interesting were JOER on 1350 and JOWF on 1440. Also noted the NHK2 synchros on 1521, a fairly rare showing here. I think that Chuck and Bruce are at Grayland now... I've got obligations here this weekend and will check in to the motel on Monday for the remainder of the week. So, the boys in Grayland ought to be doing rather well this morning, I think. Walter, this is one of those mornings that our micro-environments really made difference. I did have something on 639, but it never got above the mumble level here (Walt reported Fiji at a 9!) Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Last Night's TAs
There was some lower path activity here in IL before I quit around 0330 utc...with some of your RNE's having decent carriers. The big carrier lousy modulation Algeria 891 was close to audible past WLS phase null. I need another day or two of non AU cx to get the TA's back here (noting my paths to most of them are over Labrador). Prior to the mild AU disturbance, I could tune thru the band it as I passed 1130 to 1140 it would often seem like 1134 was a another domestic as it could get up to the strength of 1130/1140 (nothing super strong on those channels here using those antennas). If I aim BOGs NE for TA's they come in better, and if I go north to WI by Lake Mich, better still. CX were interesting last night and showed slightly AU tendancies. I barely had a trace of AB on the NW Phased BOG System that nabbed me three new ones from Edmonton the week before. CX seemed good that direction right up to the US/Canadian border. ie...910 had Minot blasting in, but no trace of needed AB, and 960 had KFLN MT (day power at night as usual) in o/u KMA and no trace of CFAC pest. SK and MB weren't nearly as good or as prevalent as a week ago. 73 KAZ 55 km NW of Chicago's Loop - Original Message - From: Barry McLarnon [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: irca@hard-core-dx.com Sent: Saturday, October 04, 2008 11:02 AM Subject: [NRC-AM] Last Night's TAs I didn't expect much with the K index up at 3, but some decent signals appeared last night around 0400 utc. [IRCA] 10-4 TP logs
I found out this morning that I don't have to go to the beach for TP DX, although it may be better there. There's a small grassy area on the apartment complex property that I go to for any serious listening due to manmade noise indoors. It was good enough to log a couple of TP's this morning. I just tried the ten frequencies listed in Gary DeBock's Receiving Your First Thrilling TP on a Stock Ultralight Radio. 774 JOUB 1307 good to very good with JJ man and woman doing a learning to speak English program. 972 HLCA? 1316 fair with man speaking what sounded like KK. I also had some other carriers with no audio; the best were 828, 1566, and 1575. JOUB was on the ICF-2010 barefoot. I needed the Select-a-Tenna for HLCA. The synchronous detection sure helps but JOUB was strong enough that I didn't absolutely need it. I'm going to do this with the ICF-2010 for awhile then give it a try with ultralights. 73, Dennis Santa Barbara, CA ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Congratulations Dennis, I'm very happy that you were able to receive JOUB-774 and HLCA-972 on your ICF-2010. About this time last year, I was also busy chasing TP's on the ICF-2010, and learning the little tricks of propagation. This paid off big time, when my SRF-59 starting receiving TP's in November. Actually, this morning's conditions were substandard, with elevated A and K levels. When these clear up, you may find yourself with several Ultralight TP's to chase. [IRCA] Vroom: New Hotrodded E100
Dennis, Really glad to hear that your new Steve Ratzlaff-modified E100 has paid off on its first morning. Having that external antenna port and using the E100 with the EWE from the shack sure beats running outside to hold the radio against the antenna, eh??? I think that you'll really like the much tighter IF filter, too. Tell me, does your dial now read accurately is the passband centered on the signal when the dial says that it should be??? Both of my E100s were over 500 Hertz off until I put new filters in them... the better filter got them perfectly zeroed in. I've found that I need to off-tune a kilohertz to get the best intelligibility on the stronger/wider signals, just like the old days before SSB using a tight filter and riding one sideband or the other to get the high notes. Anyway, I think that you are really going to love that Ultralight radio. Re: [IRCA] Vroom: New Hotrodded E100
-- John, Yes it's nice not having to go outside to use the E100 with the ewe. The bnc adapter cord works great. Steve had made me a Lo-Z splitter a few years ago with three outputs. Now I have the JRC NRD545- R8B E100 all connected and so far the E100 has not picked up any noise from the lap-top or other electronic devices in the den. E100 works very well on the desired frequency, Korea on 657 sounded better on 657, than either up 1 kc or down 1 kc. As more TP's are heard, I'm sure the up-down 1 kc method will come into use. Did have a little trouble using the space magnet on channels near powerful local (860 1550), a little overload, but no such problems with the ewe. Planning on spending 3 days at Grayland 10-20-10-22, will be anxious to connect a Western bog and NW bog to the E100. It the past, I would roll a few turns of wire around the ultralight and it work well for dxing. But you had to be outside with the weather. Now I can connect the Palstar tuner and use the preamp and tuner for a little sharper tune on the signal. I'm very happy to have sent the E100 to Steve for the upper and lower coil peaking and the bnc antenna connector along with the filter replacement. I would recommend the above to anyone who has a E100. Dennis, Salmon Creek, WA -- Original message -- From: John H. Bryant [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dennis, Really glad to hear that your new Steve Ratzlaff-modified E100 has paid off on its first morning.
Dennis, Welcome to the Modified E100 TP-Chaser group! With your new narrow filter and external antenna BNC connector, we look forward to you giving us some serious competition :) John has logged multiple TP's with his E100 and Wellbrook array at Grayland (well over 80, as I remember), and I have logged about 43 TP's using a narrow IF filter and a 7.5 Slider loopstick (both at Grayland and Puyallup). It's a real blast, and I'm sure you will discover a lot of new DXing fun during this DX season. Good luck! 73, Gary New MapQuest Local shows what's happening at your destination.
