[IRCA] THURSDAY THEATRICS

2008-10-10 Thread Pete Taylor
540 KNAK-UT still potent 10/10 0145. Third night in a row. Two years
or so ago when they went through this, we were told they had to order
a part for the transmitter.
750 KOAL-UT chattering away on/under KXL 10/10 0140. I just don't
seem to be able to get KFQD.
960 KLAD-OR Country Legends and ad for salespeople including the
street address listed in the NRC log 10/10 0125. This is not readable
here that often in deference to CFAC (hockey tonight) and KALE.

1160 KSL-UT no IBOC
1190 KEX-OR no IBOC
1530 KFBK-CA no IBOC

Not a bad band tonight but not as porous as some of the others I have
enjoyed recently.

Re: [IRCA] Victoria TPs for 9 Oct 08 antenna scorching levels

2008-10-10 Thread Guy Atkins

Hi Colin,

Scorching TP levels down here this morning, too. JOUB is the one on 774,
which is probably what you meant. JOIB Sapporo is on 747, which was
barrelling into Puyallup at 1400 UTC:

www.guyatkins.com/files/sdr/joib_sapporo_747_home_09oct2008.mp3

Also over the 1400 UTC top-of-the-hour was 963 CRI:

www.guyatkins.com/files/sdr/cri_963_home_09oct2008.mp3

and at the same 1400 UTC time here is 972 HLCA:

www.guyatkins.com/files/sdr/hlca_972_home_09oct2008.mp3

These signals are even better than I recorded via a 700 ft. mini-Beverage
behind my house in October 2004, my previous best ever DX levels from
home. This morning's reception was on my newly-erected Conti Loop. Now I
know why Walt has spoken so highly of the design.

[IRCA] Is 560 still on air??

2008-10-10 Thread Ken Baird
This last 2 days I have heard no trace of 560 CHVO NFLD. Can anyone confirm if
the station is still on air. WGAN has been dominant here in Scotland. Maybe it
is just because of the conditions this last few days. Yesterday was very good
for west coast.

[IRCA] TP for 10Oct08 from Victoria: China all the way

2008-10-10 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Monitored between 12:59 and 14:17 as I type this. Only got through the bottom
half. Pretty much wall to wall Chinese stations this morning. Japanese were
noticeably weaker. Strongest of the lot was CRI in Russian on 963 with 9+
armchair copy. 972 Korea was only a 9 compared to yesterday's 9+. Surprise
of the morning was Radio National (NZ) on 567 at 13:15. As I type this VOA
Thailand is at a 9 signal on 1575. This would have been a good morning for
John to check for all those CC regionals! More later on the day.Walt.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 10-10-- Still Booming In

2008-10-10 Thread D1028Gary
Hello Guys,

Amazing propagation continues, with new modified E100 Ultralight
loggings of KBS-756 (in KK) and Pyongyang-621. Many other possibilities such
as a
very undermodulated 1035 station with a huge carrier, and other frequencies
like 612, 927 and 1107 with almost audio. 792 had weak audio that I
couldn't ID. All this was on the 7.5 Slider loopstick E100, which has 48
thrilling
TP's so far this season. Every DXer should have this much fun.

[IRCA] Car Radio DX - Day 5

2008-10-10 Thread Bruce Portzer
TP DX was pretty good on the car radio this morning, with the channel spacing
set for 9kHz. I listened from about 1340-1355 while driving, and 1355-1410
from a parking lot next to the office. I managed to hear audio from three
stations, in addition to many hets:

747 JAPAN, apparent English lessons, caught a few words of Japanese, plus
...that's all for tonight in American English at 1350. Also heard yesterday
morning at about the same time.

1377 CHINA, fair w/Chinese talk 1359, time pips (4 shiort/1 long) 1400, time
check by woman, CNR signature tune, then man with Zhongyang Renmin Guangbo
Dientai ID. Did a nice job of cutting through splatter from local KRKO-1380.

1575 THAILAND, VOA presumed, caught woman with a few words in Vietnamese or
similar language 1343 in KCVR-1570 splatter. Better at 1405 weak but clear
after KCVR faded, woman w/what sounded like news in SE Asian lang.

That gives me 4 TP countries on the car rx this week, when you add in the
Monday log of Korea-972.

It'll be interesting to see what everyone else heard.

Re: [IRCA] Antenna for LW

2008-10-10 Thread satya
Hi Dennis:

I am a townhouse dweller with the LW bug. As Nick says, an active whip
can pick up local noise. The LF Engineering H-900 whip I was able to
sneak up to the roof, though very sensitive on LW, is indeed plagued with
whatever my neighbors' appliances are throwing off.

For my tabletop comms receiver, I recently got a LW head for my Quantum
Loop. The head itself is not as sensitive as the whip, but I can steer it
around and null out the local noise. I also have a large box loop which I
place in front of it to provide passive phasing and substantial gain, and
I can get almost as much signal as the active whip while still being able
to steer around the noise.

For portables, the Quantum Coupler or similar can be used to transfer the
output of the Quantum Loop (or any external antenna) to a portable, and
really works well.

Another option for a portable is the Quantum Stick (Q Stick) - it makes a
huge difference. On receivers such as the Sony 7600GR and Grundig G5,
it's like night and day, and again allows for nulling of local noise. It
makes a great travel combo, since it works on MW as well.

If you have space on a balcony (and a bit of spare cash), you might try
 the
ALA100 loop or one of its higher gain cousins, Dennis
 http://www.wellbrook.uk.com/

Even the ALA100 works quite well on LW with a lot less than the 20m
circumference they specify. Colin Newell might be able to offer some

But some sort of loop is probably the way to go for longwave. Active

work, but can be real noise detectors.

[IRCA] TP for 10Oct08 from Victoria: down a click

2008-10-10 Thread cafe

Sadly, I needed some sleep this morning and only tuned
from 1400 to 1405...
and within this brief window I noticed that everything was
down several clicks from yesterday...

There were no wall-to-wall signals for me.

Yes to EE on 567 and something like EE on 621.

And other than a very hot 1134, it was utterly dullsville.

Will give it a better go in the morning. For us Canadians, this
is our Thanksgiving long weekend.

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 10 Oct 2008 (Japan all the way!)

2008-10-10 Thread njp
With the A and K at zero I thought it would be a good morning for a
trip to the beverage site. The solar indices weren't the only numbers
that were low, as it was -7C out there, the coolest morning of fall
thus far. Apparently you guys on the coast were sucking all the
Chinese DX out of the ionosphere, as there certainly wasn't any to be
had here. It was still a good morning here, but almost purely Japan.
Of the 23 channels on which I noted TP audio 19 of them were Japanese.
The exceptions were Korea on 1566 (good for about 20 minutes) and
China on 1206 (only quite briefly). Japanese signals were noted on 531
(though weaker than it often is),
567,594,693,702,747,774,828,873,1089,1134,1179,1188,1197,1242,1269,1287,
1386,and 1422. Also unIDs on 891 (quite likely Japanese) and 1116. Also
noted DU signals on 612,639,738, and 1116.

Unlike most days this season the bottom part of the band was not favoured.
531 was much weaker than it usually is on good days, and 666 never even
made audio level. On the other hand the 1000-1300 khz range had one of
it's best days of the season. Hearing any TP audio on 1269 is a first for
me, and 1242 was at it's best level of the season.

Re: [IRCA] Antenna for LW

2008-10-10 Thread D1028Gary
Kevin, Dennis and Nick,

For those with an ICF-2010, a more technical approach apparently
provides huge benefits on LW. The large transplanted loopsticks (19.5 and
30)
described in an article on dxer.ca not only greatly boost MW reception on the
2010, but do the same for LW. Although I'm not really an LW DXer, the long
wave TP signal levels on my 30 loopstick ICF-2010 are astonishing, compared
to
those of a stock unit..

Amidon even sells LW-optimized ferrite bars, and Dave Schmarder sells
LW-optimized Litz wire. If an apartment or townhouse dweller chose to build a
monster loopstick with this material and transplant it into his ICF-2010, he
would truly be amazed at the performance.

[IRCA] Move of CFUN-1410 Vancouver BC's transmitter site approved by CRTC

2008-10-10 Thread Deane McIntyre

CFUN Vancouver – Technical change
1.
The Commission approves the application by CTV Limited to change the
authorized contours
of the radio programming undertaking CFUN Vancouver by relocating to
a new transmitter site
approximately eight kilometres south-east of the current transmitter
site.
The implementation of this technical change is subject to the
notification by
the Department of Industry (the Department) discussed in paragraph 5
below.

2.
The licensee advised that the existing transmitter is deteriorated to
the point

that the station is unable to prove its antenna pattern.
3.
The Commission notes that changing the transmitter site will result
in a decrease
in the coverage in the principal marketing area and consequently in a
decrease

in reached population of approximately 574,000 people.
4.
The Commission did not receive any interventions in connection with
this application.

Condition prior to the implementation of the transmitter
5.
The Commission reminds the licensee that pursuant to section 22(1) of
the Broadcasting Act,
this authority will only be effective when the Department notifies
the Commission that

Re: [IRCA] IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 10-10-- Still Booming In

2008-10-10 Thread D1028Gary
Hi Dennis,

Sorry for the lack of times in the original report (due to lack of time
to type in the morning, before needing to leave the house).

Korean audio from KBS-756 was heard at 1342 on both the modified 2010
and E100, while it was still pretty dark here. Audio from Pyongyang-621 (again
Korean) was heard at 1345 on both radios. At 1404 a station on 891 got
pretty strong, and sure sounded Korean again (probably HLKB), but no definite
ID
was made.

If these great conditions continue tomorrow morning, you could easily
receive 4 or 5 TP's on your stock E100, or DT-400W. Good luck!

[IRCA] Last Morning at Grayland: October 10

2008-10-10 Thread John H. Bryant
Yesterday, I was still having trouble believing that I'd heard KFQD
in Anchorage on the barefooted T615, right over the top of 50 kW
KXL-750 in nearby Portland, OR. Whilke I was at the local Library and
firmly hooked to the internet, I checked to see if the University of
South Carolina even HAD a hockey team (I'd heard them skating against
somebody on what I was certain was KFQD, hearing local Anchorage
commercials, etc.). According to the South Carolina web-site, they
DO have an ice hockey team, but their season does not start until 24
October. There was no indication of any earlier hockey games on their
schedule. I then checked the KFQD schedule on their website... an
all newstalk format and I looked at the U of Alaska, Anchorage for
their hockey season. KFQD showed the Beck show on at the time that I
thought I'd heard hockey from Anchorage and the University hockey
team also had not started their season. After mulling things over, I
decided to take the KFQD logging outta my list for both the Unlimited
and the Barefoot Classes... I had not recorded it and there was just
NO evidence I must have imagined it.

So, Thursday evening I made up a thorough hit list for Alaska and
went to work at 9:15PM local time. The Wellbrook Array, being able
to swap directions, made things fairly easy. I soon had evidence of
a number of Alaskans on frequencies shared with stations in the
Pacific Northwest. As I clicked through 750, THERE WAS A HOCKEY
GAME, coming in quite loudly. I tested it with the array Sure
enough I could hear KXL to my Southeast and the hockey seemed to be
coming from the Northwest! I listened a few minutes and darned if
one of the teams wasn't that crazy buncha Southerners, the South
Carolina Gamecocks!!! Later, there were plenty of local Anchorage
commercials, a name of the Anchorage municipal area where the
Pre-Season Tournament was taking place, etc. The boys from South
Carolina were well ahead, too.

I'm counting that one for sure I got several other Alaskans on
the E100 and then hit the sack, looking forward to my last dawn for a
while at Grayland.

Since I'd been so fortunate the previous three mornings that I
decided not to approach this last morning with any kind of strategy
other than a target list for Unlimited Class and a list of my current
Barefoot loggings.

The early burst around 1200 netted me a new Mayak Unlimited logging
on 549 (Okinawa was nowhere to be found) and an excellent 720 Russian
JJ Service logging, first on the E100 and then BAREFOOT on the
t615 KDWN in Las Vegas was just clobbered! After that, things
slowed down, so with 45 minutes before dawn enhancement, I had
breakfast and packed up all of my non-essentials. (I needed to leave
as early as possible to drive four hours and then catch an
over-crowded ferry back to my home QTH on weekend tourist-magnet, Orcas Island.

I was back in the hunt at 1345 (LSR around 1420). I soon noticed the
North Korean on 657... as noted by others, they musta worked on that
thing, 'cause its a LOT louder! Well, it was coming in so well that
I decided to try for a new Barefoot Country. Sure enough, the T615
snagged it easily... it was just booming in. So, I started going up
the dial with the WinRadio, looking for really loud ones and then
jumping up, changing headphones and running around the room with the
T615 trying to escape the computer QRM, the refrigerator buzz, etc,
and snag another Barefoot catch. I was really getting my exercise,
jumping up and down like a demented Jack in the Box!!!

Fairly soon, I just abandoned using a spotting receiver, things were
really coming in on the T615. I found the Sweat Spot in the room
(equi-distant between the computer and the refrigerator) and just
DXed dawn with the T615 by itself... I ended up with nine new
Barefoot TP loggings and a VERY wide smile.

I closed out the morning with a strange logging on 944.99, running
with the normal CNR1 on 945.00... REALLY weird music, etc... I'll
have more to say about that logging after I've analyzed the recording.

So here are my Unlimited and Barefoot Class Loggings for October 10.

Hi Dennis,

I use the Terk with my ULR's pretty regularly. I used industrial strength
hook and loop and the smaller ones ('59, '39, DT210V) attach right on the
top of the loop, making the whole setup portable. The Terk really peaks the
ULR's. I listen to Cuba on 530 at armchair quality and LYQ (250 watt/Tenn)
is clearly audible from here in southern Idaho.

John, nice report. I read it with extreme interest. Your 720 Russian
coming in reminded me of a similar instance this time of year in 1977

away. Fortunately, I have it on tape and play it every so often just to
remember how great things once were.

2008-10-10 Thread satya
Hi Dennis:

I own two Terk loops and recommend them as well. The Sony 7600GR sits in
it like a cradle - Bruce has a great idea with heavy-duty velcro.

Per http://www.radiointel.com/review-2loop.htm the Tertk and
Select-A-Tenna are about the same, with the performance nod going to the
Terk, which is also a lot cheaper. I prefer the looks of the Terk as
well, although the now-discontinued RS model has the tuning cap on the
outside, which I think would be more convenient.

There are some VERY interesting looking Tecsun models on ebay - see
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-TECSUN-AN-100-AN-200-TUNABLE-MW-AM-LOOP-ANTENNA_W0QQitemZ110294274523QQcmdZViewItem
or look for the Tecsun AN-100 and AN-200 models. These are also 9 inches
in diameter, so their performance is likely to be the same at the Terk and
Select-A-Tenna models. Select-A-Tenna also has an active antenna option
that might be more flexible, but not sure they're worth as much as they
are charging.

Does anyone own both of these loops? I know the middle of the RS/Terk is
open and I think I've heard that smaller radios that fit inside may get
 more
 gain.

Re: [IRCA] Radio Shack/Terk Technology AM-1000 and Select-a-Tenna

2008-10-10 Thread Bruce Bacon
Thanks Kevin. First time I've seen the Tecsun loops, thanks for the link.
Interesting indeed. I especially like the instructions:

---
1. Connect the AN-100 medium wave annular antenna to the audio modulator,
car radio or medium wave line-in socket of BCL radio. If the radio without
medium wave line-in socket, the annular antenna can be placed nearby the
radio and closed to the radio's MW build-in antenna.

2. Set the radio at medium wave band. Then roll the tunable button on AN-100
medium wave annular antenna to receive the best frequency signal until the
sound from broadcasting channel is clear and stable.

3. AN-100 medium wave annular antenna can perform it's best function by
moving to the right direction.

---

It looks like you will get either the AN-100 _or_ AN200 for your
order...with potentially different ULR mounting options on each. Amazing
price.

Bruce

There are some VERY interesting looking Tecsun models on ebay - see
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-TECSUN-AN-100-AN-200-TUNABLE-MW-AM-LOOP-ANTENNA_W0QQ
itemZ110294274523QQcmdZViewItem
or look for the Tecsun AN-100 and AN-200 models. These are also 9 inches
in diameter, so their performance is likely to be the same at the Terk and
Select-A-Tenna models. Select-A-Tenna also has an active antenna option
that might be more flexible, but not sure they're worth as much as they
are charging.

 Hi Dennis,

I use the Terk with my ULR's pretty regularly. I used industrial strength
hook and loop and the smaller ones ('59, '39, DT210V) attach right on the
top of the loop, making the whole setup portable. The Terk really peaks
 the
ULR's. I listen to Cuba on 530 at armchair quality and LYQ (250 watt/Tenn)
is clearly audible from here in southern Idaho.

Hey Bruce:

With shipping, it's about the same as a Terk loop shipped, but they do
look nice! One would hope you could choose which one you want, but maybe
