Re: [IRCA] Grayland Motel Room 15 Booked

2008-11-01 Thread Chuck Hutton
More reasons to love the Grayland Motel:

- no one cares when you leave (although I'm not there in the summer)
- the neighbors wave hello when I cut across their land with the Beverage
wire
- getting invited to a clam digger's room for fresh linguini and clams in
white sauce

And who needs cell phone service or phones in the room?

It is vey comfortable to be the only (or one of few) people there and listen
to the rain or hail while you read a book on Saturday afternoon.

BTW, I believe the motel was closed a few weeks ago for Mike's annual break
for the opening of hunting season.

The corner of the motel has sunk another handful of inches due to the water
table shift from the construction next door. It seems to bother the sewage
pipes and is causing major settling cracks. If it keeps up another year, it
will be serious news.

The good news is that there are 2 open WiFi networks at a just barely
receivable level so the Internet is available from the comfort of the
Grayland Motel with a good WiFi setup.

Hi Gary,

Congratulations for hitting the Dxers lottery and attaining reservations
at Grayland Motel & Cottages. I have always enjoyed staying there,
no maids coming through to wake a guy up after a morning of DXing.
We like staying there on winter week days when we're the only ones
staying out in back rooms. 50 mph winds, sometimes lightening and
thunder, and even a power outage every now and then.

Grayland Beach State park is also nice, the yurts are interesting.
The only problem I had was shutting the door with two coax cables under it
--
Grayland motel has the cool little windows for cables to go through.

Good luck Gary & Guy in Grayland.

Expecting around 200 kids tonight for Halloween. Last year
we had 187 kids. No rain yet, should help totals.

Dennis,
Salmon Creek, WA

Chuck,

I am getting an open Wi fi connection in rural Clatsop County. A friend
discovered it. It sure beats 28.8 dial up. Where the Wi Fi is coming
from, I have no clue, but It is there and it is nice. I will try to beef
up the signal a bit if possible.

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 1 Nov 2008

2008-11-01 Thread Nigel Pimblett
It could be considered that this was a slightly better morning than
yesterday, with an increased number of carriers, especially on the high
end of the band. But, I found it less interesting as although the big
Japanese signals had returned to a normal strength, that was about it
for audio. The Korean action from yesterday was totally lacking today.
Even 972 and 1566 couldn't manage any audio.

[IRCA] Orcas Island TPs, Nov. 1

2008-11-01 Thread John H. Bryant
Nigel and I were certainly listening to the same band this
morning it was "all Japan, all the time." The onpening to Japan
was quite strong... maybe not quite the level of mid-September, but
good, never the less. Further, the upper half of the band was more
active than has been the norm this season. There were a few of the
biggest Chinese guns around at reduced levels, but Japan ruled.

The more interesting catches:

540, NHK1 Synchros late
702, NHK2 Synchros early and late
936 had Anhui, China at low level, but also one or more of the low
power JJ Commercial repeaters late

1269 had one or both of the Hokkaido BC repeaters //1287
1305 CNR2//918 (!)
1350 JOER, Hiroshima
1386 NHK2 Synchros
1413 JOIF Fukuoka (rarely heard this year)
1440 JOWF Sapporo

So, it was an interesting AM I wonder what Guy heard at Grayland???

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 11-1

2008-11-01 Thread D1028Gary
Hello Guys,

Like Nigel and John, I noticed the Japanese were booming in this
morning-- a welcome change from the lackluster signals of the past couple of
days.
The 1386-NHK2 synchros were strong enough at 1418 for a new Slider E100 TP
logging (#52), and all of the Japanese powerhouses were at a tremendous
level-- even quite strong on a stock Sangean DT-400W Ultralight.

Early this morning at 0830 UTC (0130 local), JOAK-594 was also booming
in on its sunset peak, although the other TP's were not around. November is
usually the month when the Asian sunset peak propagation really comes up, and
it was this month last year when Asian sunset propagation provided the
original SRF-59 TP loggings of 594, 747 and 972-- credited by many as starting
the
Ultralight DX boom.

Generally a pretty good morning here, and hopefully the start of good
conditions for a one-night visit to the Grayland Motel.

 73, Gary

[IRCA] TP from Victoria for 1Nov08: Truncated report

2008-11-01 Thread WALTER SALMANIW
Listened between about 13:45 and 14:30, but got called away for a delivery, so
missed the later morning.  I agree it was totally a JJ morning with several of
the normally CC frequencies having JJ instead.  603 was clearly NHK1, and not
CC for example.  I had very strong audio on many frequencies (I'm working
today, so don't have access to my lists), but noted a sharp decline around
13:58 for some reason.  Nothing DU, and didn't get to the upper band at all
before being called away, although 1566 was coming in at 8 with HLAZ, and VOA
1575 was just audible only.  On LW, only heard 279 at 7.5 level.
...Walt.
PS:  Colin who was going to come slept in this morning.  We'll try again for
tomorrow!

Hello Paul,

Thanks for the forward of the message regarding
the 770 signal in Santa Fe. The booster transmitter
is not actually synchronized with the main in
Albuquerque. Rather, each transmitter is using a
GPS frequency locked standard. When this system
was installed, the two signals were intentionally
slightly offset in frequency to place the worst
of the interference zone in the least 'damaging'
areas. If the frequency shifts slightly, the
interference zone 'wanders', and you will experience
increased interference.

The booster generally does a pretty good job
in the area immediately around Santa Fe, but
not very far out of town. The route Mr. Callarman
took kept him in a pretty weak signal area
from the main transmitter, where even the relatively
low power of the booster continued to cause quite
a bit of interference.

[IRCA] Victoria B.C. TPs, Nov. 1 snap-shot

2008-11-01 Thread cafe

I tuned in at 1500 UTC just prior to taking the Honda Civic
DXerMobile for new tires...
And yes - I totally SLEPT in and missed the DXped to Walt Salmaniws
urban DX Farm -- and that was a good thing too because he was
called to deliver a bambino at 2 minutes after 7 AM local time!

Anyho. In the time it took to spin the dial once or twice I determined
that it was, indeed, an all Japan morning - 774 was armchair even though
it was probably 15 or 20 minutes after LSR -- there was audio
on 567, 594, lots of hets/audio up to 747 and 774 and then I was gone.

A rare missed morning for me.

The CP is merely to correct co-ordinates.. the power levels don't change and
it doesn't look like the directional patterns change either.

You're not all that far from KGAB, so the reception you're having is not
entirely unusal.. plus, they could possibly be at full power tonight by
mistake.. anything is a possibility.

KGAB is usually non-existant here at night after they switch power/pattern
which is why I sent the alert that something is now different. Their signal
is HUGE right now.

The CP is merely to correct co-ordinates.. the power levels don't change
and

it doesn't look like the directional patterns change either.

You're not all that far from KGAB, so the reception you're having is not
entirely unusal.. plus, they could possibly be at full power tonight by
mistake.. anything is a possibility.

A decent number of carriers here in Alberta too (about 20 on a quick run
through the band). None overly strong, with 1134 the strongest, as it
often is, vergiing on audio at times. Good to see some TA activity
again after a few days of silence from over there.

0100909At 0100 the Global Tuners receiver in Italy provides an ID to
the other station on channel that I've been hearing on my own receiver:
Radio Romania. I'll call it tentative for the moment, until I can get a
bettermatch with the received signal and the delayed signal on Global
Tuners. If I can pin it down, it's a new country here.
