Walt,

One report on the Website of the station stated that 600 will not sign
off right away. They are just switching the format // with the PK FM as
many other Canadians have done.

Thought I'd give it a go with my Misek phaser and what I get is KOGO San Diego
over CKBD when the latter is phased out. Coast to Coast before 07:00 UTC and

I called over to the station this morning asking about their last hours. I was
told by someone there, who was absolutely certain, that the station would have
a special program during the last hour between 5 and 6 pm and then sign-off.
There will be no other station taking over 600 AM, at least for now. The
frequency reverts to the CRTC. I asked whether there'd be any chance of
inserting some CW, but the response was negative. Note the time differs from
that reported by Bill Kral, so one would be wise to listen from before 5:00 pm
on the Pacific coast, and through to 7 pm just to be safe. I also called 1490
in Campbell River to ask when they'd be leaving the airthey haven't
responded as yet, but I'll try again. I was hoping with enough warning,
perhaps they would be able to insert some DX friendly content before going off
the air! ...Walt.

[IRCA] HeavyWeight DXing

2008-11-10 Thread Bob Young

I haven't had much time for DXing (too much HeavyWeight restoring) but got my
latest boatanchor, my third SP-600 JX-17 (got a JX-6 and a JX 26) running last
night and got some usual and some not so usual suspects.
1521 Saudi Arabia was coming in like gang busters with clear audio, that is
almost a given though on the East Coast.
I heard several station from that area but didn't spend any time trying to ID
them as I was still working on the HW radio. I pulled in some others along with
many hets, and carriers though with audio. Hope to keep up the HeavyWeight end
here soon. You can't carry 'em anywhere but they sure are fun to work on.

Re: [IRCA] What's with this ultralight stuff?

2008-11-10 Thread Robert Ross

At 08:48 PM 11/10/2008, you wrote:

I do understand it. Kind of. But, these ultralights are very little
different in selectivity and sensitivity from the old tube type table radio
that had an RF amplifier section. A six tuber as compared to the AA5.

Now, if you were using it barefoot, that would mean something to me, but
coupling large loops to them? Doesn't that kind of take away the challenge?
The only handicap I can see is that it's much harder to tune. They are quite
sensitive.

Well Leonard.just to answer a few of your questions..Yes DXing with
these Little Radios IS a Challenge. Even using them with EXTERNAL Antennas
like Loops and Longwires is still a challenge. You have to remember that
these are basic little sets with no Bells and Whistles. We don't have Noise
Blankers, RF Gains, Tone Controls, Pass Band Tuning or Notch Filters,
Multiple Filters or or any of the other Aids that are built into todays
Modern Communications Receivers. The Basic Ultralight Radios don't even
have Digital Readout! As for using them Barefoot Leonard...Many of the
Ultralight Guys DO run them Barefoot...and I do too. As a matter of fact
in the last 10 Months...I have Logged 525 Stations using a BAREFOOT
Ultralight Radio. I just recently started using some External
Antennasas I am now finding with over 500 stations heardit's
getting REAL HARD to hear new ones!!...So I am wimping out a bit and using
some external antennasin an attempt to bag a few more!! I still do a
lot of Barefoot DXing with the ULRsbut everyone once in a while I hook
up the Loop!! Believe me Leonard...even with the loop..I ain't finding
it easy to hear new ones now...

Now you may ask why are all these Crazy Old Buggers getting all fired up
about DXing with a Radio the size of a Cigarette Lighter?? Well
Leaonard.it's called FUN!!! We have all been DXing for Many years with
Multiple DX Machines and Big Antennas.and we have found that everything
has come Full Circle. I started DXing back in the Early 60's with a Pocket
Transistor Radio...and slowly moved thru the Progression of Communication
Receivers. Over the yearsthings got a little stale after the bands
changed due to Gov't Regulations, Overcrowding, Man Made Noise and IBOC!!
Listening on the Big DX Machines just wasn't as much fun as it used to
bebut guess what.Listening on the little Pocket Rockets is STILL
FUN. We have a core of well over 100 DX'ers that are now turning back the
Calender and DXing with Ultralight "Pocket Radios"just like we did when
we were kids...and even though there are some who can't see the thrill we
are experiencing...we are having a Ball!! As well as hearing 532 Stations
on my Ultralights...I have added OVER 200 NEW STATIONS to my overall log in
10 Months!! I haven't heard that many NEW stations in over 10 Years on the
Big DX Rigs. Almost everyday one of the ULR DXers in our group logs
something that "Just shouldn't be possible" on a tiny little pocket radio!!

But Leonard...don't just take my word for it...give it a try...what the
heck is there to lose?? The worst that can happen is that you spend some
quality time at the dials...and end up logging a bunch of new stations. In
the process you too will log stuff that you won't believe possible using
only 2 Penlight Batteries!!

Hopefully a few more of the Ultralight Enthusiasts will chime in here
Leonard and tell you how much FUN they are having..

So...give it a try Leonard before you rule out the challenge of Dxing with
an Ultralight...with or without an External Antenna!!

It's all in the name of FUN Leonard.that's all we're trying to
accomplish with these things. However, Along the way ..we have logged
some amazing stuff!!

I had an idea back in the day to start a QRP DX challenge. There was a guy
in AZ who was using a one transistor regen with a long wire antenna. Now,
that kind of DXing would be a challenge.

I remember that we had the graveyard channel challenges back in the early
90s. Those were fun.

Wellnow you've hit the nail on the head...Ultralighting is pretty much
the same as what you describe above. As a matter of factit's exactly
like that!!

Leonard you should check out the Ultralight DX Group on Yahoo
Groups...there's a lot of Old Time Dxers over there that are having a
riot with this Sub Culture of AM BCB DX.

I can understand how much fun they are. I had a Walkman back in the late 80s

Re: [IRCA] What's with this ultralight stuff?

2008-11-10 Thread D1028Gary
Hello Leonard,

You can feel free to blame me for all this ultralight stuff. I was a
typical, casual AM-DXer until about a year ago, when I bought a cheap $17 Sony
SRF-59 Walkman, and found out I could hear 3 Japanese and Korean TP stations
with it (JOIB-747, JOAK-594 and HLCA-972). It was a phenomenal thrill, and
I wrote a lengthy review of the SRF-59 (now posted on DXer.Ca), which
apparently started the Ultralight radio boom a year ago.

Back then, a lot of guys must have thought I was nuts. But then they
bought SRF-59's (and other Ultralights), and found out they make the same
amazing receptions. To show appreciation for Colin Newell's support on
DXer.Ca,
I sent out a few free SRF-59 samples to Canada, which has now become a true
hot spot of Ultralight radio activity. Our Yahoo Group site (ultralightdx)
now has well over 100 members, and we are the fasting growing segment of the
AM-DX community.

For the few remaining skeptics, I strongly recommend that you give it a
try. Today's pocket radios have phenomenal improvements in IC chips, RF
circuitry and digital design. They can run circles around the pocket
portables
of the 60's, 70's and 80's. Stock (unmodified) Ultralight radios have
received every continent in the world from right here in North America, and
the
DXers involved in such thrilling receptions (including myself) have become the
most enthusiastic AM-DXers on the planet.

 73, Gary DeBock

[IRCA] What's with this ultralight stuff?

2008-11-10 Thread Len Hyde
I do understand it. Kind of. But, these ultralights are very little
different in selectivity and sensitivity from the old tube type table radio
that had an RF amplifier section. A six tuber as compared to the AA5.

Now, if you were using it barefoot, that would mean something to me, but
coupling large loops to them? Doesn't that kind of take away the challenge?
The only handicap I can see is that it's much harder to tune. They are quite
sensitive.

I had an idea back in the day to start a QRP DX challenge. There was a guy
in AZ who was using a one transistor regen with a long wire antenna. Now,
that kind of DXing would be a challenge.

I remember that we had the graveyard channel challenges back in the early
90s. Those were fun.

Re: [IRCA] Sort of On-Topic radio announcement...

2008-11-10 Thread Dennis Gibson
Congratulations! When I was in junior high school (I think they're called
middle schools now) I was fortunate in that one of the teachers was a ham
and taught a ham radio class with the intent of preparing students for
getting a ham radio license. The school district let him to put up some
antennas (a cubical quad for 10/15/20 meters and a dipole for 40/75 meters).
He'd have QSO's and sometimes a student got to talk to the ham on the other
end. I took the class in 1969; I was 13 years old.

I learned the theory but had a horrible time with the morse code. I almost
gave up but all of a sudden one day the morse code clicked and I had no
further problems with it. In the summer of 1969 I took the Novice Class
license test and was rewarded with the call letters WN6JCL. My Dad helped me
put together a modest station. Back then the maximum output power allowed
was 75 watts and the transmitter had to be crystal controlled. He helped me
put up a 40 meter dipole, which also worked on 15 meters. My first QSO was
on 40 meters at night with a ham only about five miles away; it was just a
coincidence that he was so close. He said if I wanted his QSL card I would
have to come over and pick it up in person, which I did the next day. I rode
my bicycle.

I'm 53 years old but have never forgotten the thrill of my first QSO. My
first DX QSO was on 15 meters with a ham in New Zealand. I told him he was
my first and he included a New Zealand penny with his QSL card.

I will probably never own a house so after leaving for college I've mostly
had to get by with no HF. I still enjoy VHF and UHF and help the local club
with two way communications for some events; most are for a charity.

Welcome to the world of ham radio. It's changed a lot but there's still lots
of fun to be had.

35 years ago, at the delicate age of 13 or 14, I used to spend a lot of time
at our local library reading up on Electronics, radio, etc.

While there I met a 65 year old retired gentleman who was a Ham
that wintered in Victoria B.C. - We got to talking and would occasionally
run into each other at the library and then go for coffee -
We would talk about his career in Radio and the Canadian Military - He a
WWII veteran that was stationed at Ucluelet of all places.

At the time I was interested in becoming an Electronics Technician (which I
did in 1979...)

I promised him that I would become an Amateur radio operator one day -
Time passed. He passed on. But I remembered the promise.

Today I wrote one of my exams -- the Canadian version called the "Basic"
with

privileges above 30Mhz.

I scored over 90% (95% I think...) which gave me honors with HF Privileges.
I hope to do the CW and the Advanced shortly.

Depending on the availability, my call sign will be:
-VA7WWV
-VA7RCI or
-VA7EAT

It's kind of a proud and satisfying moment for me that I thought I would
share.

Cheers. And 73,

[IRCA] TPs from Orcas Isl.: AWFUL!!!

2008-11-10 Thread John H. Bryant
It was the worst morning since August. I checked the dial at 90
minutes before dawn and again at dawn. In general, what little TP
action that existed before dawn was still there, but down in level.
There was no audio at all, at any time above 1053... for the first
time this season and very little in the way of hets in the Top Band.

Oddly enough, things were about average at 702 and below both
early and at dawn. I had audio on 702 and every other channel below,
except 603 which rarely has anything here.

Is the dreaded Mid-winter Anomaly approaching more rapidly than usual???

Wonderful that Richard Allen heard a second Japanese this morning
from Northern Oklahoma. It was 774, the one that I'd have expected.
774 and 747 were both doing well here. I've heard the Japanese on
occasion in Oklahoma... but darn rarely and always on a Beverage
antenna with a major communications receiver. Well done, Richard!!!

Randy Stewart where are you!!! Euro DX from SW Missouri is OK, but
the Japanese

Re: [IRCA] WGN IBOC off

2008-11-10 Thread Kenneth Nawalkowski

Hi,
I can do that but it probably won't help as when WGN started running
IBOC at night I contacted CKDM, industry Canada and WGN about it. CKDM was
grateful to me for informing them about the loss of reception in my area;
Industry Canada said that it's beyond their jurisdiction and control since
the offending station is outside Canada and WGN apologized for their
interference but also stated that they are authorized to use it at night and
they also pointed out that I live just outside CKDM's nighttime licensed
coverage area (because of their null to the south to protect XEX and I live
straight south of CKDM) . It is a tragedy since this station was always
popular in this area ever since they started broadcasting and now listeners
are being denied this. I suspect that most of CKDM's listeners around here
are now turning to CKLQ 880 which has now become the most popular AM station
in southwestern Manitoba and has a nice strong signal here.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

The examiner wanted me to do all the tests at once based
on my technical background (Electronics Tech for 29 years - Red Seal apprentice
and journeyman)
but I wanted to do better than just passing.

I am not sure what the exams are like in the U.S. but in Canada, the level
2 Advanced involved stuff I learned 20 years ago; lots of classic circuits,
tongue twisting formula, scientific calculators required, etc.
It is all about being able to build telecom equipment and do it right.

Anyway - thanks everyone!

35 years ago, at the delicate age of 13 or 14, I used to spend a lot of
time

at our local library reading up on Electronics, radio, etc.

At the time I was interested in becoming an Electronics Technician (which
I did in 1979...)

I promised him that I would become an Amateur radio operator one day -
Time passed. He passed on. But I remembered the promise.

Today I wrote one of my exams -- the Canadian version called the "Basic"
with

privileges above 30Mhz.

I scored over 90% (95% I think...) which gave me honors with HF
Privileges.

I hope to do the CW and the Advanced shortly.

Depending on the availability, my call sign will be:
-VA7WWV
-VA7RCI or
-VA7EAT

It's kind of a proud and satisfying moment for me that I thought I would
share.

Cheers. And 73,

Congratulations Newell,

I checked QRZ.com this morning and it looks like all three call signs are
available.

And as a ham, the most satisfying moment is contacting stations on other
continents using only modest equipment and running 100 watts.

But I strongly believe that hams (there's notable exceptions of course) make
better DXers due to the technical skills required to pass the exams.

[IRCA] DX WORLDWIDE-WEST

2008-11-10 Thread Patrick Martin
Greetings everyone,

A nice report of DX on 680 when KNBR was off, from Richard Toebe, who
was lucky to catch them off. Great going.

PAN AMERICAN DX ROUNDUP

680 MEXICO, Chilpancingo, Gto, XECHG? 11/8 1220-on presumed with
smooth Jazz instrumentals "Ciento Siete" (107) IDs by male between
songs. Guess this station based on Cantu's list which shows XECHG with a
//FM on 107.1, but lists "Ke-Buena" slogan. Never heard any slogan, just
the 107 IDs. This was the most consistent signal, but occasionally
faded. KNBR off. (RT-CA)
680 MEXICO, Guasave, Sin. XEORO 11/8 1300+ "Equis Eh Oro" ID by male
just past the top of the hour, into detailed station information
(signing on?) Lost to KNBR at 1320. (RT-CA)
680 MEXICO, Hermosillo, Son XESON? 11/8 1245 "Grupo ACIR" ID rose
out of the jumble. Guess this based on info from ACIR website. Mexican
NA heard a few minutes later, could have been anyone. (RT-CA)

TRANS PACIFIC DX ROUNDUP
