Re: [IRCA] TA 4 Dec

2008-12-04 Thread Bill Harms
The interesting part is that sometimes you guys sometimes get the
further eastern stuff better than we do here on the East coast, like
Radio Farda 1575. That is because it is going over the pole. I bet there
is more stations like, say Central Asia and Western Asia that you would
get better. Are they TA's or TP's? I suppose it depends on how you look
at it. Are they going over the North Pole to the left or the right?

Re: [IRCA] not TP for 3 Dec from Victoria, BC

2008-12-04 Thread Craig Healy
   Impressively poor conditions this morning...

This should be interesting. The A/K numbers are essentially zero,
but the Aurora pictures show a deeper coloration, as if some sun
activity is pending. Just in the past hour the picture has gone
from a yellow to a more orange tinge. We will see what happens
  in the next day.

It's odd that an increase in K from 0 to 1 would have such an
effect, Craig. Interestingly, the solar wind velocity increased
by about 25% after 0500UT, just about the time that the TA's started
gasping here; I would guess that increase is a precursor to
increased auroral activity, but it shouldn't be much. The last
geomagnetic upset, the solar wind velocity more than doubled.

Maybe our high latitude DX is dependent on some pretty subtle changes.

The numbers did increase by a small amount, and the aurora picture is a much
deeper orange the last time I looked. So, it appears that deteriorating DX
conditions are a precursor to increased solar activity as reflected in the
WWV reports.

That's interesting, but a bit sad that DX can predict solar conditions,
rather than the other way around. It may well be that the TA/TP MW skip is
a far more sensitive indicator of the solar activity than even the
observational instrumentation attached to the NOAA/WWV reports.

I assume you mean Radio Netherlands. This may be WXXI Rochester, NY.
Scott
Fybush works there so he can tell us if they ever run Radio Netherlands.

Non-commercial stations on MW are fairly rare and I can't imagine a
commercial station running it. On the other hand we have an oddball

Thank you for all your help. If I can get up early enough on Saturday

WBTN in Vermont has a local program with Rich Ryder on at that time.

WVMR in West Virginia is non-commercial and they carry some NPR programs but

World Radio Network carries Radio Nederland (Netherlands in English tho they

2008-12-04 Thread cafe

If we rated mornings on a 1 to 10 scale, where 10 is letter
perfect and 1 is the bottom of the barrel...

Yesterday would have been a 1.

Today was a 2. Maybe a 2.2!

Actual audio on 774, 972 and 1566 (on the Drake R8 w/ 2X Wellbrooks)

7 audio on 972 on the E100-Slider

Thanks again to Gary DeBock (within the Brain trust of Guy Atkins and John
Bryant)
for providing a E100 Slider, a radio which, I feel, will go down as one of the
major
boosts to the hobby in this decade - The seventies had the Radio Shack TRF. We

Bill,

In the case of Radio Farda, being directional to the North aimed at
Iran, probably gives the West Coast the edge as we may get over a
megawatt in our direction, as Radio Farda is 800 KW. But the Middle East
is not an easy feat for us generally. I have not seen Saudi Arabia 1521
reported and they are high power and an upper frequency too. I caught
Oman BBC 1413 back in the 90s once but that was in the morning 1600-1700

I have been monitoring this station for weeks and have NEVER heard a call

WDNT 1280 was simulcasting WBAC 1340 Cleveland and WXQK 970 Spring City, TN

WBAC, WXQK... along with WDNT and it's new simulcast partner, WAYA 93.9 are
all owned by the East Tennessee Radio Group. Which also owns stations in

The only time you're going to hear call letters on 93.9 and 1280 now are the

Thanks for the heads up, Dennis. Also hearing 747, and oddly, 738 with monster
carrier and threshold audio; definitely looping towards Tahiti. 234 and 189
are the best Russians, but only threshold audio. 279 not quite delivering
here yet.
