[IRCA] DX Tip for WDXR

2009-02-02 Thread vroomski

--
Pat,

I was able to phased down KPOJ 620, no
Homer, AK. CKRM Regina, SK with C&W music.
Heard before, but fun phasing down a strong local station.

Hi Dennis,

If you can phase down KPOJ to get CKRM, you should beable to get Homer
with the right phase as they are in the opposite direction of KPOJ from
you.
I do notice that since 620 co-located with 1190, KEX's signal is not as
strong as they used to be. SK QRM's them most night.

Pat,

KPOJ 620 was cut down good with the phaser, CKRM
was about 50% with KPOJ. KEX is very hard to phase
and hear anything underneath. I can cut back the IBOC
from KEX, but thats about it. KGO is another hard one
to phase. Earlier this evening I did get some station underneath
KGO, not strong enough to get an ID.

Had a quick check of the top of the band and had quite good reception from both
HLAZ 1566 and 1575 VOA at 15:20. I also note a weak carrier visible on the
Perseus waterfall (with 1575 VOA on 1575.000) of 1574.947. I know Nick has
reported this signing off at 14:00 I believe, but there it is, still there at

2009-02-02 Thread Patrick Martin
Dennis,

If I happen to get anything under KGO, it is normally WGY here at night.
They are the only NY station I still hear on occasion now. Since KVAN
moved onto 1560, I have not heard WQEW. KVAN does not drop power often
at night. They are supposed to be 900 watts directional to the NE and
here they are normally S9+20 DB at night. Being on the coast, if I get
good AU cx, I have heard Fiji, New Zealand, or Australia also. KNBR is a
toughie to phase here, worse than KGO.

Impeccable timing, Walt. Up to about 0100 when I needed to abandon the radio,
1575 had a steady but uninspiring carrier, which it also has now (0245UT),
along with reasonable carriers on 783, 1134, 1215 and 1377. Things are pretty
erratic, so audio might still be possible.

This afternoon when I got back from a job, I raised the NE EWE up
another foot. Now it is 15X40X15. I also added another copper pipe a
foot away from the first one and tied them together at the termination
pot. Did it make any difference? Maybe but not much difference. The EWE
still is doing its job. Threshold audio on 1575 Farda a bit ago and a
strong het at almost audio on 783.

[IRCA] KDAC 1230 is alive and well

2009-02-02 Thread Bob Coomler
Being a bachelor for a long weekend, I hit the road today to see if I could get
any definition on my problem with my closest un-heard, KDAC 1230 in Fort Bragg,
CA. Being that they were on the way, I also made stops at KUKI 1400 Ukiah, KLLK
1250 Willits and KPMO 1300 Mendocino. KUKI is an un-interesting installation in
an un-interesting town (a van parked out in front of the studio still had
"Country KUKI" markings - they've been SS how long?). The KLLK site is three
unlit and unpainted towers (I didn't realize that was legal) slightly east of
town. No studio. KPMO is in the hills NE of the town of Mendocino with a
single tower. It may have been a studio at one time, but it is unmanned and the
building and site are rather seedy. As Patrick has mentioned, the KDAC building
is a Classic Radio Station. Not a KFI or WLW classic, but proportionally so
for a small town graveyarder. The site is not staffed. The tower was the
tallest I've ever seen for a GY
station. Some time in the recent past, there was a discussion here about tower
height and how it relates to groundwave and skywave, but I can't locate it.
Based on what I saw today, I'm wondering if the taller sticks don't indeed
favor groundwave (I should know better, but it escapes me)? Google Earth and
my own "perceptions" aside, there was no immediate horizon blockage. As I drove
south, it didn't take long for KDAC's signal to tank. BTW, Fort Bragg is a neat
coastal town. I'll be back. I have pictures of all four stations. If anyone is
interested, let me know.

2009-02-02 Thread texas4421

WCNL-1010 Newport NH seems to have left the day power on tonight -
heads up out west! C&W format.

Also noted a few minutes ago, WAPI-1070 with talk, apparently on day
power/pattern.

Barry-
As for WAPI-1070, I think it may be just good conditions. Here they are
always heard all night long. Sometimes strong, sometimes not, but they over
power the local WFLI-1070 at night.

Listening at 2230 EST, I hear the Indy station on top of frequency. Before
the night is over WAPI will be back on top.

You mention the KLLK towers being unlit and unpainted.. if they are under

Being a bachelor for a long weekend, I hit the road today to see if I
could get any definition on my problem with my closest un-heard, KDAC 1230
in Fort Bragg, CA. Being that they were on the way, I also made stops at
KUKI 1400 Ukiah, KLLK 1250 Willits and KPMO 1300 Mendocino. KUKI is an
un-interesting installation in an un-interesting town (a van parked out in
front of the studio still had "Country KUKI" markings - they've been SS
how long?). The KLLK site is three unlit and unpainted towers (I didn't
realize that was legal) slightly east of town. No studio. KPMO is in the
hills NE of the town of Mendocino with a single tower. It may have been a
studio at one time, but it is unmanned and the building and site are
rather seedy. As Patrick has mentioned, the KDAC building is a Classic

Patrick, my understanding of grounds is that they need to be separated by some
distance, and not just a few inches or a foot to be effective (This was pointed
out to me when I was doing the same as you at the cottage on the Charlottes by
Chuck Hutton. I'm reading an interesting brochure at the moment that I
acquired from Harold Sellers of ODXA fame in Ontario about grounds and sure
enough, they say the same thing. You might rethink how you place grounds and
then bind them together. I don't have the reference right in front of me, but
there is an improvement with multiple grounds, but it's not 1 + 1 = 2, it's
somewhere much lower. I.e, 2 grounds aren't twice as effective (I guess I was
thinking of the ohms equation for grounds). Anyway, just a thought. I'm
hearing weak audio on 531 at the moment at 04:39..Walt.

right now. This is Day #2 for KRWZ. This is allowed reception of 960-WABG in

for a new catch. Curiously there's still IBOC coming from a station on 670
