[IRCA] WSAR DX Test NOT heard in Indianapolis

2009-03-23 Thread HASCALL, DAVID CIV DFAS
Thanks to Jay and everyone else involved with this but no joy here in
Indianapolis, IN with WSAR's DX test. Not for a lack of trying, though.
Might have heard one, lone sound effect but no sweeps, no code, no
nothing. The channel was fairly quiet, too. I had SS ranchera mx,
after 0230, which must be the infamous non-ID'ing WSDS and two possible
talkers. Tried on both GE Superadio and an Eton e-100. At least I'm
batting .500 this year!

Speaking of WSDS - I will concentrate on them. They are not in my
logbook. I hear SS on 1480 all of the time. Is there any clue to
getting them counted, slogans, local ads or ???

2009-03-23 Thread Bill Block

Listened from 1155-1330 utc and conditions were way down from yesterday. A few
weak carriers on the bottom and top part of the band. The best audio was on
279 and no audio on 774 which is a little on the strange side to have no audio
on 774.

279 Russia hrd at 1203 utc fair.

747 Close to audio at times.

1566 HLAZ very poor at 1215 utc.

[IRCA] TP for 23 Mar from Victoria, BC

2009-03-23 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
And further downhill conditions goListened at 1300, 1335, and probably too
late at 1415UT, and just heard the regulars, and often at poorer strength than
recently. No DUs this morning either.

pretty darn good audio (at least briefly):

774 JOUB
828 JOBB at 1340UT

reasonable audio at times during the period (though often battling w/splash or
noise):

747 JOIB

not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise:

594 JOAK
873 JOGB //774 at 1338UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise:

567 likely JOIK, but couldn't snag a parallel at that moment
666 seemed //594, so JOBK
972 likely HLCA
1053 the mystery 100Hz hum
1566 at 1350UT, usual big carrier

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter): 1008,
1134, 1287

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] WSAR-1480 DX test

2009-03-23 Thread amdxmail

I had a nearly continuous undulating tone, sounding something like the
organ(?) in CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, for most of the hour. Don't know what it
was. Frequency was like a graveyarder. Gonna listen to my recording
one more time and try to match up some of the times and test material
posted by others.

[IRCA] CKKW 1090 towers down

2009-03-23 Thread Scott Fybush
They sure didn't wait long after the move to FM - I'm informed that all
nine of the towers at the CKKW 1090 site south of Kitchener, Ontario
were taken down this morning.

Actually, I'm not just "informed"...I have some fairly large video clips
that were sent to me showing the towers being toppled, three at a time.
I'm not sure they want them on YouTube, but I'd be happy to forward them
to anyone who's interested.

[IRCA] Changes at KCPW 1010 Salt Lake City

2009-03-23 Thread Scott Fybush
This may not be of interest to anyone but Michael Richard in Evanston,
but I'll take that chance...

KCPW 1010 Tooele/Salt Lake City has changed calls to KPCW, changing
programming from 24/7 BBC World Service to a simulcast of public radio
KPCW-FM 91.9 Park City UT.

KPCW used to be a sister station to KCPW-FM 88.3 Salt Lake, which owned
KCPW 1010...before there was a big to-do over the salary being paid to
the stations' founder, who's now departed.

The Salt Lake stations were put up for sale, and the FM ended up being
bought by a local community group. The AM was supposed to have gone to a
Catholic broadcaster, but it appears that sale didn't close. I don't
know whether the AM/FM simulcast is a permanent thing, or if it's just
temporary while KPCW seeks another buyer for the AM.

The AM signal is a 50 kW daytime boomer that's heard across most of Utah
and into the surrounding states; at night it drops to 194 watts, and I
don't ever recall it being reported at any great distance after dark.
Maybe they can be talked into a DX test under the new identity... :-)

Re: [IRCA] New Hawaiian heard

2009-03-23 Thread Donald K. Kaskey

Mike,

Congratulations on KUMU. Never heard here (yet). Sorry I'm so late
with this. Computer was down for 2 weeks. I don't think I've ever
heard anyone sneak through San Jose & St. Paul as yet. New Hawaiians
are always a thrill. I'm down to occasionally hearing the ones on 650,
670 and--and--and that's about it. Since Orange came on 830 I haven't
heard the HI there for years.

Mike Stonebridge wrote:

Hi Everyone:

Yesterday afternoon I was going thru my list of unlogged Hawaiian stations and noticed KUMU-1500 was amongst them. Normally KSTP dominates here with a very loud signal, but as the St Paul/Minneapolis sunrise is much earlier than here this time of year, I thought I might have a chance at logging them. So for an over night session I set my timer/radio on 1500 and crossed my fingers. Naturally the first 8 TOH IDs were all from KSTP. At 06:00 and 07:00MST there was someone under KSTP, but I know not who. At 08:00 (10:00EST) I heard the following ID "something unintelligible followed by 1500 KUMU Honolulu." The ID was heard again at 09:00, though not as clearly. This is only my second new Hawaiian station logged in the last 22 years. If only they were all as easy as this one had been.

[IRCA] Chinese Analog AM Portable Alignment Pictorial

2009-03-23 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

The Kaito WRX911, Tecsun R911, Tecsun R9012 and other very inexpensive
Chinese analog portables have been eagerly ordered recently, with hobbyists
attracted by their superior nulling ability (not to mention the price of under
$10). To be honest, the factory alignment for these portables is rarely set at
the optimum positions, and the Chinese-market units like the Tecsun R9012 do
not
cover the full X Band, and must be adjusted to cover up to 1700 kHz.

Uploaded to the Yahoo Group Site "Ultralightdx" is a pictorial of the
alignment procedure for any of these Chinese portables, along with the
procedure
for adjusting the frequency coverage to include the entire X band. Both
procedures are remarkably simple, and involve only removing the back panel, and

making a few very accessible adjustments for peak performance.

If you have ordered one of these analog radios and have never done an
alignment, the time to jump in and start is now! There will probably never be
another model so easy to align, not to mention so cheap to replace :>)
