2009-03-28 Thread Mike Brooker

CP24 Radio is a disaster

CHUM-AM, Toronto's first rock 'n' roll station, is gone. What's replaced it
isn't airwave worthy

By TED WOLOSHYN

When I was about 10 years old, I recall scooping up one of my mother's old
table lamps. I removed the lamp shade, tossed away the light bulb, stole my
mother's nail polish and scribbled 1050 CHUM on the base of the lamp.

Next to the lamp sat a Seabreeze turntable on which I played my 45s. In
between songs, I spoke into this makeshift microphone, pretending to be a
CHUM disc jockey, because even at that young age I knew that was what I
wanted to be when I grew up -- a DJ at CHUM.

But as a renowned Chicago D.J. once told a woman who suggested her son
wanted to be a D.J. when he grew up, Lady, tell your kid he can't do both.

Re: [IRCA] WZFG-AM 1100 Dilworth, MN

2009-03-28 Thread R. F. Tetro
I was able to pick up WZFG 1100 last night at 01:20 EDT. First North
Dakota station heard here. They must be running on their day
power/antenna. It was difficult nulling WTAM because the two stations
are in the same general direction from here, but I was able to get the
WTAM signal low enough so that WZFG could be clearly heard down in the
noise. Confirmed by their stream.

I also tried for KFGO 790 and KVOX 740 in Fargo, but no luck. WAEB 790
in Allentown is just thirty miles away and directional right toward me
at night, so it presented too much of a problem. KVOX 740 was just
overwhelmed by CHWO in Toronto. I could hear something in the
background but could not make out the audio clearly.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] WZFG 1100 Heard in Madison WI

2009-03-28 Thread Neil Kazaross
After the hockey game last night, I went out to my NW Phased BOG System (320 ft
// 185 ft at ~ 318 deg) to check out what was happening from the flood area.
WZFG which was under WTAM on the car rx was tremendous on the Phased BOG System
as expected. Clearly they are running 50 kw ND and they are lots better than I
get them via SSS when they have 5 kw CH power and much better than when I can
dig them out running normal night rig.

There was some talk on 790 but superswamped even by my best attempts to phased
WBBM IBOC (13 miles away) so who knows as I couldn't get more than a mumble
thru the I-BUZZ, but I don't need KFGO anyhow. 970 was dominated by MN's CW
stn, but as usual WDAY was in there and they had flood coverage as well. Were
they on day ND pattern ? I have my doubts.

I didn't try for 740, but I don't recall ever getting them on night rig. 1200 I
can get at night on this antenna setup when I phase Chicago's SSer out..they
weren't 100% copy o/u weak (using this direction BOGs) WOAI, but they were
clearly running normal religion and during a break no mention of the tragedy.
1280 was all WWTC (The Patriot) o/WNAM.. no trace of Moorhead which I only get
via SSS sometimes anyhow and as always nothing I could pin down as needed 1280
CW from SK, inspite of 1220 and 1250 from MB being in with CL mx. 1660 had
Fargo's ESPN really dominant as usual on these BOGs which are nicely directive
at this length in X-band. No mention of the flooding during a local ad break.

It seems that WZFG 1100 has the emergency b'casting situation under control and
is doing a good job. A pity that they aren't licenced to ND since ND is a very
difficult catch far back east of here.

I heard them at the same time 0606-0608 UTC with AM 1100, The Flag
IDs, mentions of floodwatch 2009 and 701 area code, plus flood related
news. They dominated for those two minutes, then faded under KFAX.
That was the only definite reception I had, otherwise KFAX and KNZZ took
turns dominating with occasional splash from KPTK-1090.

I also had EAS-type data bursts at 0603:30 UTC, but they were followed
by KFAX talking about sexually transmitted diseases. Not sure if the
EAS stuff was from WZFG cutting through the QRM, or KFAX doing something
for dramatic effect, or some other station doing a routine EAS test.

[IRCA] Tecsun R9012 Lemon Variants-- More Info

2009-03-28 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

Rob Ross and I have both received yellow/ orange colored R9012 analog models
from the eBay seller tquchina, which have proven to be substandard in
comparison to the black R9012 models from dpmega. The lemon models have very
poor AM performance out of the box (typically receiving only two or three
locals), and cannot be aligned up to the sensitivity level of the black
R9012's.

Further investigation reveals that all the lemon models received so far were
made in 2005, and have a serial number of 0892005xxx. The Tecsun R9012
date of manufacture is actually stamped on the circuit board, below the
loopstick mounting position (but usually hidden with tape).

In addition, the loopstick coils and coil forms are different in the good
black models, manufactured in 2008. Tecsun has apparently improved the AM
sensitivity in the more recent R9012 models, but the substandard (at least on
AM) R9012's from 2005 continue to be sold.

For those of you performing an R9012 alignment according to the pictorial
just posted on DXer.Ca and the Yahoo groups Ultralightdx and ODXA, please note
the date of manufacture stamped on the circuit board below the loopstick
position. If your R9012 was manufactured in 2005, you may have a lemon, and
may
not be able to get frequency coverage from 530-1700 kHz, or bring up
sensitivity to a high level.

Tecsun R9012 purchasers are requested to check the serial numbers, and
report lemon models ASAP. In the interim, please avoid purchasing any R9012
models
from the eBay vendor tquchina.

73, Gary DeBock

[IRCA] TP for 28 Mar from Victoria, BC

2009-03-28 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Listened from 1340 to 1405UT this morning, by which time things had pretty much
dried up with occasional bursts back to audio on some of the old favorites.

Another erratic morning, mostly the regulars, with a touch of DU in the mix.

pretty darn good audio (at least briefly):

828 JOBB (may have been DU behind this as 1400 approached, seemed //with what
was under 594, but of course 612 had faded down at this point)

reasonable audio at times during the period (though often battling w/splash
or noise):

612 definitely 4QR with DU EE talk about 1350UT
747 JOIB
774 JOUB
972 HLCA

not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise:

594 JOAK
954 JOKR likely w/pop mx
1287 JOHR w/JJ talk at 1348
1566 HLAZ at 1356 w/CC program, also a carrier on 1565.9687

Burbles in the splatter and noise:

567 seemed //594, so JOIK?
873 JOGB //828
936 at 1343, could have been CC talk, so Anhui RGD
945 CNR-1 //5030 at 1346
1053 the contemplative 100Hz hum
1134 may have been //972 but hard to tell
1242 JJ inflected talk by man, so JOLF?
1269 traces of male talk; wishful thinking said it was //1287

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

864, 1098 DU, 1548 DU (after 1400UT)

Re: [IRCA] WZFG 1100

2009-03-28 Thread Mike Stonebridge
It took me a while to get a positive ID from this station. Last evening they
were in here loud and clear with many mentions of the floods, emergency
phone numbers, etc. Then slowly they faded down into the KFAX/KNZZ/WTAM mix
never to return. So I resorted to my usual method of overnight recordings
with my timer setup. And lo and behold slightly before 06:00MST (08:00EST) I
heard the Talkradio AM 11 Hundred, The Flag ID twice and at the TOH I
heard the full ID, AM 110 The Flag WZFG Dilworth Fargo Moorehead.

My thanks to everyone who reported this, and for giving the ID details. At
the very least I knew what to listen for, but as it turned out it wasn't
necessary as the ID I heard was loud and clear.
