They're scaling back on the prediction for the peak of the coming solar cycle
(now predicted to be May 2013 and the weakest in 80 years) :

The predicted solar flux graph on that page is spurious, as SF shouldn't go
below 65, but apparently there's some program glitch in their conversion from
sunspot number.

Note how the smoothed Ap index is still dropping; if it hangs in until next
fall, there should be some pretty good DX coming this way.

best wishes

[IRCA] Move of CKDH-900 Amherst NS to FM - correction issued by CRTC

2009-05-08 Thread Deane McIntyre
The CRTC has issued a correction to its decision allowing CKDH-900
Amherst NS to move to FM -

It seems that the correct frequency is 101.7 MHz, not 107.1 MHz:

CKDH Amherst – Conversion to FM band – Correction

1.

In CKDH Amherst – Conversion to FM band, Broadcasting Decision CRTC
2009-224, 24 April 2009,
the frequency for the new FM radio station approved in that decision
was incorrectly identified
as 107.1 MHz. The Commission hereby corrects that decision by
amending paragraph 2 to read

as follows (change in bold):

2. The applicant proposed to operate the new FM station at 101.7 MHz
(channel 269B)

with an average effective radiated power of 18,700 watts.

2.

Further, the Commission corrects the relevant paragraph set out in
the "Terms" section

of the appendix to that decision to read as follows (change in bold):

The station will operate at 101.7 MHz (channel 269B) with an average
effective radiated power of 18,700 watts.

[IRCA] GOOD NEWS- WGOL-AM Stereo 920 Update!

2009-05-08 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Since someone on an email list recently mentioned that WGOL wasn't
broadcasting in stereo anymore, I decided to take it upon myself and
check into it.

This note came to me this morning directly from WGOL's
Engineer/Technical Assistant..

"WGOL's stereo signal is still on the air. The webstream however, is run in mono

The WGOL transmitter is a Broadcast Electronics AM1A that has never
given us a minute of trouble. The stereo processor is a CRL Amigo AM.
The WKAX transmitter is a Harris Gates One that has been much less
reliable. It has an Inovonics 235 processor. There are three
Inovonics processors on the studio side of the STL, two of course for
WGOL and one for WKAX.

The station's websites are at http://www.wgolam.com and
http://www.wkaxam.com but do note, only WGOL streams it's classic
country format. WKAX doesn't stream it's Christian country format.

There you have it, WGOL is still, in fact, broadcasting in stereo.
Whoever reported it as not in stereo, must've been mistaken or had a
problem with their radio.

Sincerely,
Paul B. Walker, Jr.

Correct. Spurious transmission.

Something produced only inside a receiver is an image.

Well, there is intermod(ulation) as defined by an earlier post, the
mixing of various harmonics and frequencies. This usually occurs
entirely within the receiver although rusty or corroded connections
external to the receiver, as stated, can also produce it.

To me, an image is hearing a station that is twice the IF frequency from
where the receiver is tuned. For a receiver with a 455KHz IF, a
station on 1410 would be heard on 500 if the front end of the receiver
dioes not filter it out.

It may be difficult to tell which is which in some cases, like this?

Intermod usually has distorted audio in my experience. Images sound
quite clean.

Thanks Steve. I thought about satellite, but with our bad storms and
extremely high winds, the weather would be an issue at times. With
Verizon, probably not an issue. Infact I can pick Verizon internet up
for a month to see if I like it. If not, I can cancel it. Otherwise, I
am on a 1-2 year contract like I am with the cel phone. I would think
5GB would be fine. I do go on You Tube to watch videos and e mail
friends at times, so the 50MB would not work, but the 5 GB would. I have
not totally decided as yet.

Most carriers' formerly unlimited plans now have 5 GB caps. However, based
on my experience and what I've heard, they don't enforce the cap unless you
go way over.

I track my usage against my cable companies 250 Gig monthly cap. My
hardware firewall does this for me, keeping track of all of the upload
and download data, as these get added together to form the actual cap
value they use to judge you.

I do OS updates, and my email lists (not that many), a minor amount of
surfing, no p2p or other audio or video downloading at all, have the
computers off except when I use them, etc., and I regularly hit 17 to 25
gigs in a month.

At the current overage rates for wireless on a 5 gig plan, you would
have an instant heart attack. The overage charges are instant bankruptcy.

So (for Verizon as an example, $.49 for each megabyte over 5 gigs)
that's (1,073 x 20 - get gigs to megs) x $.49 = $10,515.40 in overage
charges per month for what I would use.

These overages add up lightning fast. So track them if you get such a
low cap as 5 gigs per month. And make sure the cap is not shared with
your phone too because a lot of seemingly unrelated stuff actually uses
data too.

Go for unlimited if possible.
