Dennis, As I get ready to take off for Portland to fly to ABQ, I turned across the dial briefly and it is alive on most channels. Vietnam 675 is armchair copy out here. CC on 801. I don't have much time, but with the heavy fog, I am getting no powerline noise. [IRCA] TP for 17Sep09: Asia so-so, DU excellent
Monitored between 13:09 to past 14:00. The Asian stations were only so-so, down from yesterday without any very interesting or new stuff, while the DU really picked up after 13:30 to the best level I've heard them in quite some time. Radio Rhema on 540 was booming in with a funding drive...lots of IDs and phone numbers. The Australians seemed to be mostly broadcasting a silly ball game and no IDs at 14:00. One interesting note was that on my 244 deg loop, NHK1 was cochannel 3WV on 594 at 13:46, whereas earlier it had been all DU only. Strange! So a fun DU morning. If anyone wants a mp3 file of Radio Rhema in all it's glory, let me know and I'll send you the clip...Walt in Victoria, BC ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Hi George; There is a drop-down on Google Books and one of the options is Full View. If a book is offered in full view, it should be able to be downloaded. [IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 9-17...Good Asian Morning
Hello All, Despite the drop off in Asian signals reported by Walt, the low-band TP's seemed to do very well here-- but as usual there was no trace of Walt's DU's. HLSA-603 had a strong signal with Korean pop music at 1333 for a nice MP3, and even had a weak co-channel TP underneath (sounded like Chinese, but too wispy to be sure of the language). 657-Pyongyang had a booming signal at 1328. Other than that, a fairly good Asian morning here, with the following heard on the hot-rodded C.Crane SWP Slider ultralight: 585 JOPG fair NHK1 audio at 1321 594 JOAK flamethrower signal as usual, throughout sunrise enhancement 603 HLSA strong with KK pop music at 1333, weak co-channel TP in background 639 CNR1 good signal with Chinese news at 1335 648 Presumed VOR with threshold audio at 1336 657 Pyongyang another flamethrower at 1323, but with ragged carrier as usual 666 JOBK strong NHK1 program at 1328 675 VOV good audio at 1330, but again troubled with 680 splatter 738 BEL2 another strong signal with ragged carrier, talk program at 1331 756 Presumed KBS with moderate audio at 1339 783 Moderate carrier at 1342 that never came to audio 936 China Anhui strong at 1343 with female-voiced news, rivaling 639-CNR1 for best Chinese signal As usual during the brief sunrise enhancement here in DX-challenged Puyallup, there wasn't enough time to check all the other frequencies-- but it was fun while it lasted. 73, Gary Modified ICF-2010 spotting receiver (30 loopstick) Modified C.Crane SWP Slider (7.5 sliding coil loopstick + Murata CFJ455K5 filter) 36 collapsible (PVC frame) tuned passive loop (bedside) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] TPs from Orcas Island: Sept 17
This morning must be an example of different antenna systems hearing different things, entirely. My morning was quite different from Walt's, but similar to Colin's: It was my best Asian morning so far. It started early and lasted late with very few channels below 1125 without Asian audio at least at threshold levels. I did NOT have Asian audio on 648, 810, 900, 954(oddly), 981, 1008 and 1080. Otherwise, they were all full, with many of the channels at very strong levels. I've never gheard 675 VOV so strong... Just for the heck of it, I // them with their internet feed and it was slightly better :). Mostly, it was either the usual suspects or too low level to ID solidly, unfortunately... I had something on 549 that was not JJ and not VoV2 (not // the internet) and too low to get a real handle on. 819 North Korea could easily have been broadcasting from nearby Vancouver. I really think that they have worked on that transmitter/antenna in the past year, WOW! I continue to watch 1053. The last few mornings, there has been programming there that is absolutely not //2850, but is too low level to ID the language. I'd agree with the comments that this early season has been at least as good as the last two. I'm hearing more and better from the Mainland, I think, but what is missing is the second and third tier of JJ stations... I have heard very little of the NHK small synchro transmitters and nothing from most of the commercial outlets. For the first time in several years, I've decided to give the Alaskans a try from here, driven by hearing previously difficult KJNO-630 several mornings in a row. I'm almost certain I had KVOK, Kodiak-560 at 9PM TOH last night, running over a phased KQC, Wenatchee, WA. That was cause for celebration, since Kodiak is 1 kW and a lot further away than the 5kW in Wenatchee. I tuned in and phased at 8:55 and probable KVOK hung in there pretty solid until 9:03PM, before dropping like a rock. The rats played continuous CW the entire time... not a hint of even a song title, much less an ID... ARGH!!! Re: [IRCA] TPs from Orcas Island: Sept 17
Hi John and Colin, Thanks for your TP reports, which agreed with the good Asian conditions here. For some reason, 675-VOV was stronger here yesterday, when it finally had no 680 splatter (so I could make a decent recording of it). Today it was also at a good level, but troubled with the usual 680 QRM. It has been a regular visitor with audio here for most of the month, during peak sunrise enhancement. 73, Gary (in Puyallup, WA) In a message dated 9/17/2009 11:05:04 A.M. Re: [IRCA] 1040 Asiatic unID
Thanks, Marc, will do. Unfortunately it's been my experience that foreign language stations don't ID always ID that well, in any language. Rob Ross heard similar programing a few weeks back, but he is in Vegas, this week. Wikipedia says that they are now Spice Radio Atlanta broadcasting in Hindi - and Hindi sounds more like what I heard, so it may be them. Wiki also notes that they have a CP for 50 Kw. Their website is down. I heard them at 1935 EDT, their signoff time would be 1945, so maybe that is why they were not audible at tune back at 1950. Pat, Maybe a couple good rainy days will clear the power lines of dust and clear up the electrical noise in your area? In the SF Bay Area, PGE would come around in the summer and spray the power poles with high pressure water to cut down on electrical noise. When you come home from the IRCA convention hopefully mother nature will have fixed your noise problem. Have fun at the convention. Re: [IRCA] 1040 Asiatic unID
WPBS is no longer Spice Radio Atlanta, I dont think Im pretty sure that actually ended but I could be wrong. I think the station is just on the air till they can find another person to lease the station -- Sincerely, Paul B. Glenn, I heard Radio Mil-1720 announce 5 watts at sign-off at 0020. My receiver is a Drake R8B, not likely a mixing product. Radio Encliopedia Popular definitely on 1720 kHz. 4 carriers on 1720. [IRCA] Today's DX - Thursday 9-17-09
I definitely agree with whoever said this was an excellent morning. I found myself awake at 1240 UT and decided to hit the dials in real time for the first time this season (as opposed to checking the SDR files later in the day). It was a good decision - I heard more Asians than any other morning so far this season. Conditions would have almost been OK by Grayland standards, and were downright thrilling by Seattle standards.. Here are the highlights. I've omitted the routine stuff and most of the unid carriers this time around: 1170 SOUTH KOREA, KBS World Radio fair w/ 3+1 pips signature tune, then woman in Chinese, mixing w/KPUG and a third station 1300. The other station had 4 short pips and one long very high tone at the TOH. A tantalizing mystery to be sure - the pips are typical of Chinese stations, and there are many of them listed here. 594 JAPAN, JOAK, fair w/JJ talk 1301, loud by 1308. First time heard this season, mainly because the SDR-IQ has loud gurgling noises on 590-610. As expected, it was easily heard on the Drake. 603 SOUTH KOREA, woman in KK, then pop music good 1303. First time heard this season (see 594) 558 SOUTH KOREA, pop music //603 fair 1303 657 NORTH KOREA, good w/usual tirade 1306 711 Very noticeable het against local KIRO-710 1309 1318 891 UNID woman in Asian language 1312, but too much CJDC-890 KIXI-880 splatter 1215 CHINA, weak w/time pips 1200, CC talk fair 1205 1210 1134 SOUTH KOREA, fair with 3+1 pips woman in KK 1200, much stronger 1205 w/man in KK in CKWX splatter 1305 UNID female talk, fair signal 1208 but bad domestic splatter 1359 Carrier/het from presumed China, but too much KKMO-1360 splatter to get definite audio 1210 738 Chinese talk fair 1311, presumably Taiwan, first non-Korean log on 738 this season 819 NORTH KOREA, 1316 fair w/female operatic despite heavy splatter from local KGNW-820 837 UNID, excited Asian male in unid language weak 1317 1017 CHINA, CRI KK service fair 1248 963 CHINA, first decent audio of the season, fair w/Russian talk 1741 1035 CHINA, CNR time pips but little else 1300 1044 CHINA, fair w/CRI signature tune, CC ID by man, JJ ID by woman 1301 Here's hoping for more of the same on Friday Bruce in Seattle SDR-IQ and Drake R8A receivers K9AY antenna ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] 930 Arabic and warble
Does anyone have any ideas about the source of the Arabic chanting and warble (not necessarily the same source but possibly related) heard here this morning. The warble has been heard for some time but I'm not aware of the Arabic being reported on I did find a message on HCDX (7 Dec 08) from Albert Muick in Kabul noting what seemed to be the Koran being chanted on 930. But it seemed to be a one-off. Ken Baird 20 miles SE of me has posted some observations along with the text of Albert's message at http://www.ayrshirehistory.eu/tadx/transatlantic_logs_september_2009.html and this is my recording from 0528 UTC today. At this time the greyline passes through France, Spain, Morocco and Nigeria, so is well to the west of Saudi Arabia. http://www.geocities.com/paulcrankshaw/930unid.wav Paul Troon, Scotland ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
