[IRCA] Was WCKL-560 On Saturday Night?

2009-10-11 Thread John Cereghin
On Saturday, Oct 10, I had a station with urban gospel music on 560,
mixing it up with WFIL. There were announcements by a woman speaker
wilh very low modulation, which made it very hard to understand what
she was saying. I slept through the TOH at 2300 and they were not
there Sunday morning. Could it have been WCKL in Catskill NY? I know
they are irregular but when they are on, do they broadcast an urban
gospel format?

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 11 Oct 2009

2009-10-11 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Started out with rather poor conditions. Even Japan on 774 was barely
making audio, but things took a big jump at sunrise (something that
hasn't really happened much around here this season), bringing in a fair
bit of second tier audio, though none of the signals were overly
strong. I'm just on the way out, so don't have time for details, but
in the end I'd rate the morning as slightly above average.

[IRCA] New Tecsun PL-310 ULR-- Awesome Performance on Three Bands

2009-10-11 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

For those of you waiting on a detailed report before considering a purchase
of the latest DSP wonder from the Chinese domestic market, the four-band
investigation of the new Tecsun PL-310 LW-AM-FM-SW DSP-enhanced pocket radio
has been concluded here, and the results are very impressive.

The Longwave performance has been significantly improved from the PL-300WT
(a.k.a. G8) predecessor, so that competitive beacon reception is possible
using only the stock loopstick. Last night at 0800UTC I was able to log the
following beacons on these approximate frequencies: NY-351, ZP-369,
MOG-405, and also QQ-398. Of these four beacons, the PL-300WT (G8) had only a
trace of NY-351, and none of the other three.

On AM, I ran a detailed shootout between the new PL-310 and the Kchibo
D96L, the winner of the recent 2009 Ultralight Radio AM-DX Shootout (the
PL-300WT was thrown in also). The sensitivity of the PL-310 and D96L models is
very close overall, but the PL-310 has a decided edge in the mid-range
(700-1500 kHz) frequencies, while the D96L has a slight edge on the extreme
upper and lower band frequencies. Both the PL-310 and D96L walked all over the
PL-300WT (G8) in sensitivity, while in the selectivity tests, the PL-310 and
D96L had exactly equal performance [which was far superior to the PL-300WT
 (G8)].

On FM, the performance of the new PL-310 matches the stellar PL-300WT (G8)
completely in both sensitivity and selectivity, so FM-DXing enthusiasts now
have another fantastic ULR to choose. Both of these models walked all over
the D96L in the FM performance tests, presumably because of the D96L's
shorter whip antenna.

On SW, the irritating AM spurs and mixing products of the PL-300WT have
been corrected in the PL-310, which provides sensitivity equal to that of the
PL-300WT without the side effects. The SW performance of the new PL-310 was
also quite impressive, but was a shade less than that of the E100 (PL-200)
models, making this the only band in which a competing ULR was able to
slightly exceed the PL-310 in performance.

The full details on the Tecsun PL-310's performance will be provided in a
mini-review on the new receiver, which should be wrapped up this evening.
In general, this new DSP model seems to be all we have hoped for (and maybe
even more!).

73, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA)

Fellas, conditions were very unusual up here on the Charlottes with
major fades up and down. Highlights were India on 1566 overpowering
HLAZ with EE news at 15:02, Radio Farda over VOA on 1575 at armchair
level, Radio Sawa on 1539, Bangladesh at armchair copy dominating 693
over Tokyo with English news at 14:30. Later in the morning, things
seemed to settle down with the return of KK/CC and JJ stations to good
strength. Just for fun, I continued to monitor Farda at 18:00, and
19:00 (local noon). Life is good up here. Just wish I could stay
longer! By the way TAs were way down last night, although I did hear
Djibouti. Otherwise a difficult evening with lots of weaker signals,
compared to the night before. More later as time permits! ..Walt

I'd taken a couple of mornings off, but was at the dials from 1330 to
1430 this morning... generally, I shoulda taken another morning
off. Well below average to poor would be my assessment. Although I
did eventually get a modest number of audios, even on the upper band
at dawn, things were far below normal. I did have Thailand 891 doing
decently for a brief period just before 1400 and I noticed that N.K.
819 had gotten their signal cleaned up... sounded great this morning.

With the additional boost that Grayland gets, I hope Dennis had a
worthwhile morning before he packs up.

Guy and I'll be taking the next shift, starting Monday morning, with
me at Rm. 15 at the Grayland Motel and Guy a mile to my south at
Grayland Beach State Park. Guy will be testing the latest iteration
of the Lankford Phased Array and I'll be testing the new production
version of the K9AY Phased Array from Wellbrook. The latter antenna
requires a decent ground for maximum effectiveness and the Grayland
sands will likely inhibit things a bit. However, even under those
difficult circumstances, I'm very hopeful that the new antenna will
prove even more effective than my older ALA100-based Wellbrook Array.
Guy and I will both heading back during the day on Thursday.

Very similar observations here Nick. Had weak audio on 1134 and 1215,
but that was the extent of it. Did note a fair number of carriers,
particularly on the low end of the dial, but most of them were well
short of audio.

[IRCA] First new logging since June

2009-10-11 Thread amdxmail

890 WJTP GA Lithia Springs - 10/11 1840 EDT - Atop WLS with
Contemporary Christian music in Spanish. 1843 ad for concert with
mentions of Atlanta, Atlanta, Georgia and Buford Highway, several
Poderosa Ocho Noventa AM mentions. Plenty of tentatives over the
past several months, but they always just cut the carrier at sunset
with no ID of any kind. Finally something IDable; Poderosa is their
slogan per the Fall '09 listings at arbitron.com. 890 #16.
