I get KGO on 800-820 pretty clearly. I can also see their antennas, as well
as KFRC and KNBR.

I dubbed off Scotland 810 and France 864. The Scotland 810 is a bit
rough, but you can clearly hear "on Radio One" from a British speaker,
so apparently 810 relays Radio One. France is a bit better, but not a
whole lot. But at least two new ones.

[IRCA] TA oddments...enough for now?

2009-10-14 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Things continued to be bitty beyond some consistent signals on channels like
1134, 1215, 1269...

But.sometimes they'd hang in long enough to get a "parallel" with a web
stream.

The best was Sweden on 1179 at 0455UT, new country for me.

DLF on 756 was also snagged (a re-log)

VoR on 1323, also a relog, but almost good at times w/EE nx at 0520UT

But mostly it was those who got away, not fading up long enough to nail them
down using webstreams.

Among the audios (and most were rarely better than mumblings in the murk):
1017, possibly Germany, 774 (Spain?), 1611 (Vatican), 837 likely France Info,
by the time 1377 had faded up for a //, this was fading down; 1278 poor to fair
w/mx at 0515 (France Bleu?), and 765 at 0525 (R. Suisse Romande?)

Great fun!

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your question.

During detailed testing of the new PL-310 in my suburban location, there
was no problem at all with overloading-- and the DSP Ultralights in general
have developed a reputation for being almost "crunch-proof" in resistance
to
overloading. There were also no AM spurs or mixing products detected,
although like the PL-300WT (and G8) models there are some
internally-generated
heterodynes, as detailed in the PL-310 review article.

My 9' (side) PVC box loop will severely overload most Ultralight radios
when tuning in locals, but the DSP Ultralights (PL-310, PL-300WT, G8, D96L
and
D92L) are unfazed by such massive RF. My guess is that you will have no
problem at all in overloading with the new PL-310, even in urban areas.

Hi Gary,

still true with the PL-310? On a business trip last May to Salt Lake City,
Utah I noticed the E100 was very prone to severe overloading across the
entire MW spectrum. It made DXing impossible above ~ 900 kHz. Would the
PL-310 be better than an Eton E100 in a high-RF, urban environment such as
SLC? Thanks & 73!

Ultralight?"

Hello All,

The Chinese domestic market has produced yet another highly refined pocket

radio with awesome DX capabilities-- which happens to be the "flagship"
DSP
model from China's leading radio manufacturing company.

The new Tecsun PL-310 LW-AM-FM-SW portable was designed to excel in the
billion consumer market, and if you have ever dreamed of a highly
sensitive

and selective AM receiver that you could hold in your hand, the Tecsun
company certainly had you in mind! Combining multiple DSP selectivity
options
(1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 kHz) with a vastly improved loopstick, the $40 (plus
shipping) PL-310 is designed to astonish both experienced and novice
DXers
alike.

Besides the outstanding AM-DXing performance, the PL-310 also has
competitive LW capabilities, and FM performance equal to the class-leading
PL-300WT
(G8) models. Read the full details in a thorough 6-page review just
uploaded to the Ultralight Radio File section on _http://www.dxer.ca_
(http://www.dxer.ca) , and to the file section on the Yahoo Ultralightdx
group site,
"The Tecsun PL-310 LW-AM-FM-SW DSP Receiver-- Four Band Performance
Review."
Available for $39.99 plus $24 shipping from the top-rated eBay seller
"Anon-co," this innovative new radio may well be the dream multiband
receiver
you have been waiting for-- and the perfect introduction to the unique
fun
and excitement of Ultralight Radio DXing!

73 and Best Wishes,

[IRCA] TA oddments

2009-10-14 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Things are hard to nail down tonight.

May have gotten Algeria-531, similar sounding talk on website, and a carrier at
531.0196 among others, causing hum, 1053 showed a ghastly offset at1053.0198
making quite a hum there (Libya?). 828 has a really warbly carrier, quite
strong; anyone else hearing this? It's a big spread of carrier between 828.000
and 828.007kHz

819 had Arabic singing briefly at 0254UT, likely Egypt, while 855 showed SS
talk briefly. 1377 of course lining up with the web stream with mx, briefly
good signal. As others have noted 1134, 1215, 1269 all with reasonable signal
for a few moments.

Lots of other bitty audio: 675 likely Holland, 702 (any clues? Morocco?), 837,
864 w/a SAH, 873, 963, 999, 1089, 1422 etc.

No IDs beyond 1377 so far though...

[IRCA] 675 Radio Maria

2009-10-14 Thread Jim Renfrew

Jim Renfrew, Holley NY

2300 edt675NetherlandsLopikRadio Maria - Music "He is the
Great I Am", ID at 2300 as "Catolic ... AM ... Radio Maria.", then a
bilingual "Singing in the Rain" (German/English, I think, and not the
well-known tune from the movie, but a more sultry version), another ID
"Radio maria ... Nederlander" at 2304, then a woman speaking.

Sort of a new one. Previously heard with R. 10 Gold.

LW signals in tonight: 183, 189, 198, 225, 252, no sign of 261 that you New
Englanders are hearing.

MW signals: 693 BBC, 531 RNE5, 1134 HRT

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 14 Oct 2009

2009-10-14 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Seemed to be a good morning for the upper end of the band, but rather
mediocre lower down. In general China seemed to be favoured, with CNR1
doing well on 945, 981, and 1593. CRI in Russian was in on 1323, but
was better on 1521 (which has been a regular this week). The Urumqi
station on 1107 was also in quite well at times with talk in a central
Asian language. VOA 1575 and Korea on 1566 were about as strong as
I've heard them all season, and I could make out a few words of German,
undoubtedly from DW Sri Lanka, on 1548.Heard some decent audio on
1467 also, not one of my regular channels.

Mike,

Thanks! I was wondering if a UK made clock would work on WWVB. That is a
thought. I also found Franklin Clock Co to still be in business, so I e
mailled them about either a new clock or a new motor for my old one, if
available. So I have several options. Besides that, I found another
company online Time and Signal Co that still makes electric clocks
(110v). I did not see any 24 hour ones, but I can call them too.

I hit Tybee almost every year. Where were you able to do this? Certainly
you weren't up there near the pier. I've been to busier places, but I still
don't feel comfortable stringing out wire at Tybee. Maybe I have to go in the

Sapelo Island would be a great place for a DXpedition if we could pull

Maybe we should check into renting the Big House some day...

[IRCA] Day THREE at Grayland

2009-10-14 Thread John H. Bryant
Conditions seem to be "healing" somewhat along with the arrival of
the fall rainy season. In general, signals seemed somewhat better and
the more northerly routes (the Russians) were at least present, if
not at full strength. I managed a long log for a reception report
(yet again) for Voice of Vietnam, with the 675 signal being up and
down a lot, but a solid 9 on peaks. Even better the VOV1 transmitters
on 5975, Hanoi and 7210 Buon Me Thuot were both in, with 5975 doing
quite well. The third SW transmitter on 9530 did not seem to be on
the air, the best that I could tell.

Thanks to a tip from Chuck Hutton, I heard Heilongjiang RGD Satellite
Synchros on 1341//621, for only my second TP logging on 1341 (the
other being NHK1 mini-Synchros some years ago.)

Mayak 549 Synchros were in for the first time this trip, doing poorly
but clearly //576 which wasn't doing too well either. I also heard
909 JOCB, NHK2 Nagoya totally dominating Tianjin, China for the first
time this season.

CNR2 was doing especially well this morning, all over KCIS, 630 at
max dawn and CNR1 on 540 was knocking down walls, it was so powerful.

Lastly 684 was in standard Chinese this morning at 1440 UTC,
post-dawn, rather than the usual Pyongyang Bangsong. No way that I
could find to try //s and it was gone along with most of the band by
1500, 40 minutes after LSR.

So, there it is... Things were marginally better and clearly headed
in the right direction. There is hope for tomorrow, my last morning
on this trip.

Re: [IRCA] Analog 24 Atomic clock set on UTC

2009-10-14 Thread Patrick Martin
Seems crazy that they don't offer an option to offset the time. Short
sighted, I'd say! Walt.

It is funny, but I ran into an Ham that has been active for 60-70 years.
He doesn't have an Atomic clock that will work on UTC either. The old
wall clock is probably my best option. I wish I could replace the old
motor in my Franklin clock, but it is a real 24 hour clock and a regular
clock motor would not work. The hands would not line up right.

2009-10-14 Thread Patrick Martin
Walt,

I have thought about getting an old 12 hr electric clock from a garage
sale and doing the 13-24 hour inner ring. I still like the electric
clock 50/60 cycles as they keep nearly perfect time and are trouble free
for many years. Also inexpensive. That may be my best option. Close to
what you suggest too. but finding an atomic 24 hour clock set to UTC is
not an easy task. I called the local Radio Shack and yes they have
Atomic clocks, but only P/M/C/E time. One other option would be to buy
an atomic clock from the UK, but it would probably not work on WWV. I
wonder what the Hams are doing these days? Ham Radio Outlet in Portland
has nothing either.
Thanks.

Patrick, my solution was to be a $5.00 old fashioned round clock from Ikea,
with a second hand and add a ring of inner numbers from 13 to 24. Runs on a
single AA battery for about 6 months and is accurate within a few seconds every
few months. I also have one of the old Radio Shack atomic clocks (of course
they won't do GMT, just the local time) digital clocks which is how I ensure
the wall clock is bang on. Much cheaper than your options. I'm going to do
the same thing at the cottage tooWalt

I still have not had any luck finding an analog atomic clock (with
hands) that can be set to UTC, but I did find a rather spendy one that
MFJ makes 123, that is solar operated 12/24 digital than can be set to
UTC, even though the directions do not explain it. A couple reviews
covered this. At $79.95 is spendy, with 2-3 inch numbers you can hang on
the wall. But it is an option.According to the reviews, it is the
best clock that MFJ makes and runs trouble free by several posters for
years. But I am still looking. Setting the 24 hour clock to UTC is a
must for me. the only other Atomic clock I do have is a Specific Oregon
and it has worked well since I bought it a Fred Meyer in 1997. It can be
set to P/M/C/E times only though.

Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 10-14-- Barely Average

2009-10-14 Thread D1028Gary
Hi Nick,

Thanks for your comments. Despite the fact that Puyallup is quite a
mediocre DXing location, the 9' box loop has certainly been a real thriller
since
I deployed it on October 3.

The general TP bearing direction is around 310 degrees, so I usually set
the loop facing that way when I start DXing each morning. That bearing seems
to work well in general, although sometimes I need to change the loop
bearing to null out a pest to the north or south (Vancouver, Seattle or
Portland), leaving a bearing less than optimum for TP chasing, but still
acceptable for splatter-free reception.

The 9' (side) loop has received 8 mew TP's for me since it was set up on
October 3rd, including several that I had never heard at Grayland. The
dimensions and construction are detailed in the PVC Loop article posted on
_http://www.dxer.ca_ (http://www.dxer.ca) , _http://www.am-dx.com_
(http://www.am-dx.com) and the Yahoo Ultralightdx site. If a DXer has a
decent back yard
(and tolerant neighbors), this $52 gain monster may be just the trick for
exciting DX.

Re: [IRCA] TA's found inside BOG last night

2009-10-14 Thread neilkaz
Gil,

When I use BOGs for TA's here from the upper midwest, I typically aim somewhat
north of my great circle paths to them, but I agree that you'd (Savannah GA) be
better served by aiming somewhat south of them. In both cases the goal is the
same... to have the TA's still basically in the BOG's main beam, but to have
the huge pests that come from the eastern USA..ie typically NYC down the side
of that main beam. If you lose a dB or two on the TA signals, but 10 to 15 dB
on the pests, your ability to copy audio from TA's goes way up.

If your beach is very wide or if the road or path to it is available, you may
wish to run due east and really try to trash both NYC and Cuban/Floridian QRM.
Due east sb good for Mauritania 783 (is usually ona bit past 0100)as well as
Sao Tome 1530 and Benin 1566 (both come on at 0300 I think)

[IRCA] TP for 14 Oct from Victoria, BC

2009-10-14 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Got lazy this morning and didn't start listening until about 1410UT; there
seemed to be a peak of sorts at 1425, but I suspect some of that was the
"signal to splatter" ratio increasing as the domestics faded. Still had to
work at the DX, and most of what was heard was unexceptional, but as Colin
noted, there were Chinese today.

pretty darn good audio (at least briefly):

594 JOAK
774 JOUB
828 JOBB at 1428UT
1566 HLAZ; unusually steady over the period, not really loud, but very clear
1575 VoA

reasonable audio at times during the period (though often battling w/splash
or noise):

603 HLSA // 558 at similar level at 1419UT
747 JOIB
936 mx, likely Anhui? at 1424
945 CNR-1 //5030 at 1425
954 JOKR w/JJ talk
972 HLCA
1593 CNR-1 //5030 at 1426UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise:

153//189//279 R. Rossii
567 JOIK //594
963 CRI
1017 CRI in KK //5965 at 1425UT
1134 KK //972
1143 mx; Taiwan?
1422 likely JORF

Burbles in the splatter and noise:

585
675 no // available on 5975, but likely Vietnam
1188
1215
1278
1305
1314
1377 possibly CNR-1, tough to establish parallel with this messy signal
1503 possibly JOUK, but NHK1 parallel becoming difficult by 1430UT

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

1251

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 10-14-- Barely Average

2009-10-14 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

Like Dennis and Colin reported, TP propagation may have been slightly
better this morning, but not by much. A general scan of the band (on the 9'
box
loop) looked like this:

558 JOCR fair at 1358
585 JOPG good at 1359
594 JOAK strong at 1352; very strong at 1410
603 HLSA strong at 1403 (mixing with Chinese co-channel)
621 Pyongyang fair in KPOJ slop, 1403
639 CNR1 strong at 1357
648 VOR threshold audio at 1404
657 Pyongyang strong tirade at 1405
666 JOBK strong at 1406; no sign of Russian
675 VOV good signal at 1407
693 JOAB fair at 1408
738 Taiwan Fisheries a solid "9" at 1410; no KBS co-channel
756 CNR1 weak at 1410
784 China threshold audio, 1411
792 UnID China threshold 1411
891 JOHK fair at 1412; no Thai co-channel
918 China fair at 1413
927 "
936 China strong at 1414
963 Threshold audio 1415
972 HLCA strong at 1355
1035 UnID Chinese weak at 1416
1053 Jammer/ China mix fair at 1400
1107 Very weak music at 1418
1125 Threshold audio at 1417
1134 Strong signal from KBS at 1419; no co-channel
Higher Frequencies: No time to investigate

My main targets for the morning were 1107 and 1125 kHz, both of which had
threshold audio rising to mediocre levels at peaks. No TP's have been
logged here on either frequency. 1107 plays a lot of music and has very little
speech, while 1125 has weak Chinese-sounding talk. With such mediocre
conditions, these two frequencies have been dragging out their UnID mysteries
for
three days straight.

Hope that John and Guy had better luck in Grayland today.

73, Gary DeBock

Spotting receiver: Modified ICF-2010 (30" loopstick)
Main receiver (this morning): Modified C.Crane SWP ultralight (7.5"

I heard a Radio America talk station this morning around 2am Eastern here in the UK. A reasonable signal so I suspect East coast. No toh ID and into IRN/USA news on 920 AM. Can help appreciated.

[IRCA] TA's found inside BOG last night

2009-10-14 Thread Gil Stacy
Kevin,
Thanks. I do the same when at home, but it wouldn't work on the beach as
neither coax nor my military commo wire have the necessary flexibility to
wrap around the Kchibo D96l to easily couple the BOG to the rx. The RS clip
lead does. South African Gary Deacon couples his little M37 to his 200
meter bog by wrapping a few turns around the rx. This works fine for my
D96L.

This was the first time on the beach with the BOG and next time, I'll put
out a longer Bog and be more careful in the layout. I'm 45 degrees great
circle bearing to London and the layout last night was closer to 30
degrees. Next time I'll shoot more towards 60 degrees as 40-45 degrees
pretty much follows the Eastern coastline towards Europe. A more easterly
direction should offer more side rejection to the west of me as I'm about
1000 miles from Boston which means I'm plowing through a lot of east coast
stations towards Europe and Africa.

Yesterday, I received a QSL from a long sought DX target.

KBRW sent a friendly e-mail reply to e-mail report + audio file in less
than a day.  V/s Mike Lane, GM said he tried DXing when he first arrived
in Barrow 30+ years ago, but the only station he could regularly hear
was WLW (in addition to unid Asians).

I've uploaded the audio clip in case anyone wants to hear it

This was at Grayland on October 3.  I'm still amazed at how well KBRW
made it through KNBR

Gil,

I use a piece of quad shield coax to get my cable out of the house to
a 150 foot wire and a piece of coax that has been cut with the center
connector exposed for field work. It makes things a lot easier if you
can find a piece of coax used for TV and connect that to the PAL
connector and connect the center conductor to the antenna.

Works great.

[IRCA] TA's found inside BOG last night

2009-10-14 Thread Gil Stacy
Actually, not all of them were found stuck in the BOG.
After work, I drove about 20 miles from home to Tybee Island, Ga, and at
local sunset, rolled out a 500' BOG along the dune line, and floated the BOG
to my E-1 via an insulated clip lead so as not to hit the ground side of the
PAL connector. The two foot lead was connected to the BOG which is twisted
pair military commo wire with ends soldered together. I used the two common
TA lists on the yahoo ULR site compiled by Allen Willie and Mike Connelly as
starting points. At 23:54 Z, England clearly came in on 1089 with football
(soccer) talk. It took a slight offset with the passband tuning to uncover
the audio beneath a rather loud het.
ON 1089, I could barely hear audio with my Kchibo D96L with the clip lead
from the Bog loosely wrapped around it. Up until I left the beach at 0030Z,
on both rx's, I heard clear audio on 1521 Duba and 585 Spain with audio on
the Kchibo both on and off the BOG from Spain. I ticked off hets of varying
intensity on the E1 at 549, 774, 981,909, 945, 1089, 1341 and 1548.
