Re: [IRCA] Disheartening discovery
John, I am sorry to hear this. I sure hope that the album shows up. I don't take veries to conventions, as I can be forgetful. I would love to show some QSLs, but I don't want to lose them. I have taken them to DXer GTG's, but they are safe at someone's house, even if I forgot them, but at a motel convention room, anything can happen. You have a beautiful collection of pictures too. 73, Patrick ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

I'm hearing a station carrying Dennis Praeger (sic?), one had a spot mentioning "...in Armstrong" and another carrying country music. All 2 or 3 of these stations seem like they're right on 1070.00. I'm getting that carrier too as well as one on 1070.03 that shows up occasionally. The one on 1070.06 is stronger on the antenna aimed NNE. [IRCA] Today's TP DX - more of the same
This morning seemed about equal to the last few. Some stations were better, some were worse. Not a big difference overall. The oddball of the morning was something with 3+1 time pips and what I'm sure was Chinese talk on 639 at 1400. The language was definitely not JJ or KK. If the Chinese was CNR1, they were way out of their normal routine, as the pips were not the normal ones, there was no time check after the pips, and no big musical fanfare and ID like they usually do. What's more strange is I had something similar at 1300 on 1170, 3+1 pips which I thought was KBS, but all the talk was Chinese, with none of the familiar theme songs that I've come to know and expect from CNR1 and KBS. Did anyone else notice anything unusual on CNR1 this morning? Here's what my SDR recorded between 1225 and 1510 today. Due to a setup error, I didn't record 920-1110, so I probably missed a few things Really nice audio at times, good enough for a native speaker to understand most of it 594 Japan, sometimes crystal clear, sometimes unintelligible 693 Japan 747 Japan 774 Japan Fair audio, good enough for a native speaker to follow some of it, even if just for brief periods 639 China (presumably), see above 720 CNR2, sometimes stronger than the KIRO splat and computer noise, YL talk & time pips 1400 738 Taiwan briefly dominant at 1325, KBS briefly dominant at 1350, a mishmosh of mostly weak audio between those times 828 Japan, not nearly as good as 693/747/774 1170 China, see above 1206 Yanbian Marginal, could recognize bits of programming, but a native speaker wouldn't have understood it 549 Russia, chimes and pips at 1400 558 KBS//603 585 Japan //594 603 KBS//558 612 presumed Japan 621 Unid, like usual there was too much KCIS splatter to even figure out the language 657 presume NK 702 Japan 729 Japan w/talk & pips 1400 756 unid 855 N Korea 891 unid 909 unid 1134 KBS 1278 unid 1287 probably Japan 1422 Japan 1566 HLAZ Carriers sometimes with real or imaginary traces of audio 666 675 783 792 819 837 846 864 918 1116 1179 1188 1215 1242 1269 1485(!) 1494 1503 1557 1575 Bruce in Seattle SDR-IQ receiver with K9AY antenna ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] black gospel on 1560 KZIZ-WA?
I suspected this last month when I had super high end SSS cx to WA but couldn't ID it. However, you need to make sure that it isn't WGLB from Milwaukee. If you have good high end cx to WA, KRPI's Indian (Punjab) stuff will stick out like a sore thumb on 1550. I'm not feeling so well today, so didn't head out to DX. Last night cx to WA were OK but not as good as a month prior. There were only traces on 1550. On 1560 I noted just a few seconds of SS thru a surprisingly strong KKAA. 1680 had KNTS, but not at the arm chair peaks of the previous month's end. Re: [IRCA] Noise cancelling headphones
Sure, I can see that there are exceptions. I have the Bose aviation noise cancelling headphones that I LOVE while I fly ($1000+). They are superb. I have tried lots of others with different levels of success. In Colin's case, he needs to be able to eliminate the surf sound. One option is to use the tight headphones worn by race car enthusiasts/pit crew. They virtually totally eliminate any extraneous noise when worn, but are passive, of course, and not active. You don't seem to lose any frequency response with these, compared to the active variety. I have a pair of these that are in fact up in Masset now, and are used primarily during my DXing sessions there. My wife hates them, as I don't hear a thing around me, including calls for dinner, etc! Mostly, my experience is that you get what you pay for with active noise cancelling headphones (the Bose variety Steve mentioned are superb...my wife has a pair of those), whereas the $20 or $30 variety barely do much of an! ything...Walt At 08:26 AM 10/28/2009, you wrote: >> I've never found noise cancelling headphones of much use for DXing. I'm impressed by Able Planet's Clear Harmony product: www.ableplanet.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=38. The noise cancellation is okay, but the LINX Audio is superb in terms of being able to pick up on nuances of speech without turning up the volume. I did a story on LINX a few years ago -- www.proavmagazine.com/industry-news-print.asp?sectionID=0&articleID=666144 -- and it really does work. The list price of $300 is steep, but a few months ago, Tuesday Morning stores were selling them for about $100. ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

I use the Bose Quite Comfort headphones for DXing and love them. When I purchase the JRC NRD 545 I receive free JRC headphones. I also purchased the Heli noise cancelling headphones and was unhappy with them. The headphones separated from the head band. I have had the Bose for almost two years (Christmas present) and find them better than the two above headphones. I have some hearing loss and they seem to help when DXing. These are the ones I use -- http://www.maxellcanada.com/press_releases/2004/noise_cancel_headphones.html I have middle-aged ears with a definite roll off beyond 6 or 7 khz... so as far as the fidelity is concerned... who knows. What I do know is that "conversation" frequencies "sound" slightly warmer with the NC "on" - but that might be a result of how the "anti-noise" system works in the Maxell's - Most of the sound that I will be dealing with in Hawaii will be whatever the frequencies of "surf" are -- and a lot of that is subaudible -- and VERY loud... So we shall see. DXing last year with a modified E100 and Sony medium "cans" (not all ear encompassing) was fatiguing. Keep in mind that these are rather unusual dxing environs. If I take my Wellbrook ALA100M with some wire and cable I will be DXing in relative luxury (peace and quiet) The plan is: Carry a hard-case (not a Pelican) with me w/ -Eton E1 -Zoom MP3 recorder -Sony MD -Stock E100 -ALA100M + Power supply -Copy of my Amateur radio license & -Importation paperwork from Canadian Border Services and hope that Homeland warms up to me -- they generally do (I am ex-military, worked as civilian for Defense and am currently a civil servant who volunteers for some civil defense programs...) so I am pretty low on the threat to national security index. :-) I have debated this over and over again with various radio geeks and hams and the consensus appears to be: Traveling with radios? Carry them on. Checked ham gear, if fancy can be carted off my baggage handlers if insecure. Re: [IRCA] Noise cancelling headphones
I agree with both Walt and Colin. Not too good for DX but great in noisy offices and on airplanes. Walgreen's has Coby "bargain brand" noise cancelling headphones for $20 (USD). I got mine for $5. :) A clerk had apparently mismarked the rack where the headphones were, as 75% off clearance. I asked nicely to verify the price and the manager said, "it's supposed to be twenty but I'll sell you one for five." I told her "thanks." :) The Coby ones do have an on-off switch, for the noise cancellation circuitry. I wonder if the frequency response in the "off" position, is compromised, in the least? 73, Dave in Indy -- Message: 3 Date: Wed, 28 Oct 2009 08:26:12 -0700 From: c...@islandnet.com To: Mailing list for the International Radio Club of America Subject: Re: [IRCA] Noise cancelling headphones Message-ID: <4ae86294-5...@helpdesk.islandnet.com> Content-Type: text/plain > I've never found noise cancelling headphones of much use for DXing. [IRCA] TPs from Orcas Island
Sorry that I didn't report yesterday: it was just so depressing! I worked on my attitude overnight and, sure enough, things were improved quite a bit this morning! The lower band was at least at some point between 1400 and 1500... about 80% full of audio... up markedly from yesterday, especially in the 800 to 1100 area which was largely missing yesterday. The upper band (1100 up) had 7 stations at least murmuring yesterday and it had 20 stations this morning. As Nick noted, few of the signals stayed at good strength for very long, but there WAS quite a bit of improvement. That said, there wasn'r much that I found interesting The most interesting thing has been to watch the residual ionization conditions increase as the season gets later. I'm hearing more and more stuff from the Prairies, especially the Canadian Prairie Provinces that are lasting clear until dawn out here, even past dawn. It is just not "normal" to hear 540 Manitoba at LSR dawn here... and Idaho wiping out Portland on 1080 (that's probably a daytimer issue) and "W-1440" at dawn (up near Edmonton) wiping out the Japanese and two Oregon stations. There are a number of other examples. Its kinda nifty to see seasonality at work, but geez, I wish it would stay away from the 9 kHz. splits! I was also interested to see two other channels (along with 1107) that clearly had multiple carriers, spread over half a kHz or so: 1035 and 1503 this morning... both really spread out. I've seen 1503 a number of times like that before, but rarely 1035. Now that I know what to look for, thanks to Chuck and Bruce, I'll probably see others. I remember last year, there was what must have been a mid-level carrier on with 675 Vietnam. It never bothered the audio and the top of the carrier spike of VoV was clean and steady, but this funny other carrier oscillated back and forth in frequency about .3 kHz above and below VoV, about 2 or 3 times a second. The combination of the two carriers looked "just like" a hula dancer shaking her hips. I've obviously been DXing too much starting to see porn on the oscilloscope! So, conditions seem to be improving, though I obviously need to "get out more." [IRCA] TP for 28 Oct from Victoria, BC
Listened from 1350 for about an hour, and conditions continue "bitty", with very little in the way of consistent signal strength, and no really big signals either, just lots of hard work digging in the splatter. Upper band was incrementally a little better than the last two days, but still not good. I didn't repeat Colin's logging of CC on 621, though it wasn't bad here about 15 minutes later, and has been a pretty consistent performer this season. The peak seems to around 1430-1440UT these mornings, but it's not too pronounced Just as I write this at 1620UT, there's still some weak JJ talk on 594, and weaker talk on 954 and 1242. [IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 10-28...Better
Hello All, The high band and mid-band TP's continued in the doldrums here, but there were some interesting signals on the low band. At 1427 a strong co-channel was mixing with JOAK-594, apparently the same one that John and others heard recently. There was KBS-type music being played, and the language (mixing with JOAK's Japanese) certainly sounded like Korean. A fairly decent MP3 was recorded, but the apparent Korean faded later in the MP3 before the KBS // on 603 could be checked. Did anybody else hear this station this morning? It was received on the 9' box loop, which because of the near-freezing temperature would resonate down to 594 khz. 549 kHz also had the strongest carrier I've heard all season, but with a very loud mix of KARI and KOAC on 550, the splatter was just too much to dig out audio. 585 also had a mix of NHK 1 (JOPG) and another station, again weakly playing music not // to 594. This 585 kHz UnID is always weak, even on a pretty good morning like today-- so it may stay unknown for quite a while (unless John hears it at Grayland :-) So that's about the story for a fairly decent morning here, at least on the low band. 73, Gary DeBock Spotting receiver: Modified ICF-2010 (30" loopstick) Main receiver: Modified C.Crane SWP (7.5" Slider loopstick + CFJ455K5 filter) 9' (side) PVC-frame tuned passive loop (in the frozen back yard) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

There was a schism in the band this morning... a BIG one at that. Heard Chinese clear as a bell on 621khz - never had it so good. Re: [IRCA] Noise cancelling headphones
I've never found noise cancelling headphones of much use for DXing. They take out a portion of the frequency response and make DXing more difficultWalt At 05:45 AM 10/28/2009, you wrote: >Hi Colin > >Which noise cancelling headphones do you use? Re: [IRCA] 1040 unID HELP - ATTN DX'ers in the South and Southeast! + Two new logs
"Rocky 1420" WKSR is an interesting station, kinda rock-ish music, last i listened, not alot of commercials, theyre mroe about the music. "Rocky 1420" is also on the DH2 of WKSR-FM 98.3 They have a website at http://www.wksr.com/ and if you click on Listen Now, you can hear both stations live, and as we all know, a live webstream is good to use and compare against what you think you're hearing on the AM dials Rocky 1420 WKSR's imaging is somewhat unique, so it should be easy to spot. And I suspect your 1040 is WPBS with a blistering 50KW Day and 5KW Critical. [IRCA] 1040 unID HELP - ATTN DX'ers in the South and Southeast! + Two new logs
Hey; I was at the dials a bit, last night and my mystery "Eastern" station (Far East? Indian? Hmong?) was back in Loud and Clear on 1040, easily swamping WHO. Instrumental music, then some talk by a female and then dance type music. Finally at 1855 EDT a man, who sounded like he meant business, started talking and then (very surprisingly) an Everly Brothers song came on (?!). What? I then realized that the Mystery station must have signed off or powered down and I was now listening to another station. I didn't hear any thing in the final Mystery station announcement that indicated calls, CoL or anything discernible such as a city in the unknown language. The other station was WKTI. After the Everly Brothers song they had a fairly humorous sign off announcement, with something like "we have to turn our transmitter off" Then WHO was dominant after 1900 EDT. WKTI is new to the ULR log. ***I would really like DX'ers, especially in the Mid South or Southeast (Bert New, Doug Smith, Powell, JD and so on) to listen to 1040 from just before 1800 EDT to 1900 to see if you also hear the Mystery station and if you can get an ID out of them. The November sign off time switches to 5:30 PM EST (after the time change) and is actually before their LSS, in the first part of the month. [IRCA] Last night, I only had ears for EWE
Which was hooked to the Drake R8B and firing 130 degrees which is 90 degrees off from a direct shot to Europe from my qth in Ga. At sunset, 2300 Z I did a bandscan on 9 kHz splits and heard hets at 531 558 621 639 711 801 819 909 981 999 1089 1251 1269 1341 1431 1512 1521 As usual, loudest of the bunch was from Duba followed by 1089, 531 and 999. I recovered audio from Duba 1521, the clearest ever for me, a man speaking. Spain at 585 was also very clear until about 2330, and Sport Talk 1089 came in, but not as clear as the other two. The origin of 531 has me curious as I haven't been able to hear a peep of audio from it despite a loud het. RVC ends up gobbling up the het as time moves past sunset. On LW, audio from 251, 234 and 207. Unfortunately, my linguistic recognition skills are not much better than my 10 year-old Aussie's, and I can't swear to the language. My location is an old residential area with above ground electrical service and about 13 miles from the Georgia coast as the seagull flies. My indirect firing EWE trumped my longwire once again. None of the TA's audio was heard on the longwire as I toggled back and forth from the ewe, demonstrating that SN ratio is at times more important than gain. I did not have my 18' Dallas Langford inspired Quiet Vertical online last night. While ionospheric condx were gangbusters for me, near Earth activity was somewhat noisy as I could hear the QRN crackle and pop of regional lightning strikes. 73 Gil Savannah GA Drake R8B, 18'x40'x18" EWE, 130 degrees 150' long wire, up 55'.
