John, I believe I was the last one out of the convention room and did not see them (or anybody's personal items) on any tables or normal locations - ie. unless they fell behind something or another. I'm at least thinking they made it back to your room. Good luck in your search and sorry to hear about they're disappearance. [IRCA] Three TP's heard this morning in Calgary AB (two on UL radio barefoot)
Using a Superadio II barefoot, listening from 1330 to 1405, JOIB had good audio most of the time and on peaks was easily heard on the Gary DeBock aligned SRF-59 barefoot. The new logging for the day was JOAB-693, which gave very good audio // to JOIB (English language lessons talking about shoplifting in the USA) at times. Was also easily heard on the SRF-59 barefoot for my third UL TP! Only other TP that produced audio was JOAK-694, only heard weakly on the SR II. I made an interesting observation this morning: by placing the SRF-59 close to the top of the Superadio, where the ferrite rod is, I can couple the rod to the SRF-59, resulting in greatly improved reception on the SRF-59 of the frequency to which the Superadio is tuned. Of course this is just using the antenna of the Superadio as a passive loop antenna - and of course do not count as barefoot loggings on the SRF-59. Doing this JOIN sounded almost like a local! 73, Deane McIntyre Calgary AB ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 10-29... 594 khz Korean Mystery
Hello All, Conditions in general were nothing to shout about, with the sunrise peak seeming to provide a less and less benefit as the month progresses. The best signals seemed to be around 1345 this morning, although the band received a modest boost around 1430. 594 kHz again had an equal mix of JOAK and a Korean-language station this morning around 1425, with the Korean station playing KBS-type music, but the signal was up and down, making it tough to check the 603 kHz KBS parallel (which was mixing with 603-China, of course). This JOAK co-channel was first noted about a week ago, and seems to show up only during the sunrise peak enhancement period. Another MP3 of the mix was recorded, but still nothing to positively ID the Korean. Other than that mystery, the JOPG-585 weak co-channel was also back around 1432 playing some instrumental music, but didn't have enough strength to provide any real clues. Once again the high band and mid band seemed well down in strength from its peak October days, and only the low band frequencies had some interesting signals. Hopefully things will improve before John heads to Grayland-- I remember the phenomenal conditions that Guy Atkins and I had around this time last year in Grayland (November 2), when Guy received 1575-Radio Farda on a stock Sony SRF-39FP ultralight. Good luck, John! 73, Gary DeBock Spotting receiver: Modified ICF-2010 (30 loopstick) Main receiver: Modified C.Crane SWP (7.5 Slider loopstick + CFJ455K5 filter) 9' and 6' (side) tuned passive loops (in the back yard) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] Down - A Lot: TPs from Orcas
My spectrum chart does not look as bad as it should, though it is pretty bad. Most of the signals that were there put in quite brief peaks of audio and then disappeared in the murk. Even at that, I only had about half the audios of yesterday on the lower band. The upper band was about the same as yesterday... not bad, just mediocre. There did seem to be a bit of a late post-dawn peak at around 1455-1500, but things were dying quickly by then, so it was hard to be certain.. There was really nothing of great interest. I'm packing today for a (probably) last trip to Grayland. Kevin S. and I will be there Fri and Sat nights and then I'll extend through Sunday night. One of the main goals is testing a new version of the Wellbrook Array that uses two Conti Super Loops as elements. Its much like Wellbrook's latest K9AY array, but does not depend on good grounding for effectiveness. Gee, I hope that conditions improve at least a bit over the weekend. Quoting John H. Bryant bjohnor...@rockisland.com: My spectrum chart does not look as bad as it should, though it is pretty bad. Most of the signals that were there put in quite brief peaks of audio and then disappeared in the murk. After reading Dennis' and Deane's loggings, yours and Colin's remarks gave me some sense of relief. This was a work morning for me, with a couple of other things on the boil at the old homestead, so DXing was limited to a few 5-minute checks. Not long after 1300UT, there was some liveliness, but brief peaks as above, and lots of splash. 1400UT was duller, still with brief peaks, and 1430UT showed less splash, but generally less signal as well. The NHK big guns were often in the mire, and there wasn't much to replace them. Yet, CNR-1 was noted fairly well on 945, mixing with NHK-1 (when 594 deigned to show its nose). My spectrum chart of average signal strength showed a marked decline even from a couple of days ago, so I was worried about an antenna failure, but no, just a propagation failure. best wishes, Nick ** Nick Hall-Patch Victoria, BC Canada ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] New article on Moxon indoor FM antenna available
Hi all: Just uploaded to the DXer.ca and Yahoo UltralightDX sites is an article about building a Moxon antenna for indoor use. As someone who can't hoist a good 12-element Yagi up on the roof, I have been pleasantly surprised by the performance of the Moxon design, which gives a lot more gain than a dipole or whip antenna and is also quite directional. It takes three lengths of PVC pipe, some connectors and some wire and rubber bands to have a really good FM antenna. It will hook up to any FM receiver, including portables, that will take an external FM antenna. [IRCA] Abbreviated but interesting TP DX this morning
Sometimes, if you try to record while you sleep, things don't work out as planned. This time around, Spectravue and Vista got into one of their periodic fistfights, so nothing got recorded until I stepped in at 1340 and broke things up. So today I ended up hitting the record button as I headed off to work. Although I only recorded 585 to 774 kHz from 1340 to 1510, things were kind of interesting. The Japanese powerhouses were up and down, and there were lots of unexpected Chinese stations. CNR1-639 was back to normal, with its regular time pips, time check and full fanfare ID at 1400, so I'm not sure if it was really them I heard yesterday with NHK-like pips, or if they broke format for some other reason. There were also unid Chinese stations on 594 and 603, as well as 621. The latter had a pretty good signal but took a lot of bashing from KCIS-630, thus preventing any hope of an ID. Anyway, here's what the SDR files divulged. Things were pretty good until about 1450, when signal levels took a nosedive. Really nice audio, for a few minutes at least, good enough for a native speaker to follow most of it: 594 JOAK, Perfect copy for a few minutes here and there, but the wildly varying signal faded into unintelligible glop several times. At about 1425 there was a second station in the background with music and a woman in Chinese 738 Taiwan, briefly quite good at 1340 with what sounded like a sporting event. Dropped down to unexciting strength a few minutes later and stayed there Somewhat OK audio, a native speaker could recognize some of the words and phrases at times: 621 Unid Chinese, quite strong at times but usually hammered into incomprehensibility by KCIS-630 639 CNR1, see above 657 N Korea 693 Japan 756 China dominant with Korea in background, pips talk from both at 1400 747 Japan 774 Japan Marginal audio, could recognize programming, but a native speaker wouldn't have been able to understand it 585 Japan //594 603 China, unid w/pips time check at 1400, no ID heard 675 Unid 720 CNR2, pips at 1400 729 China, pips time check at 1400, as well as talk music before ToH, probably Jiangxi Carriers, none of them with real or imaginary audio today 612 648 666 Bruce in Seattle SDR-IQ with K9AY antenna ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
