[IRCA] MN 0615 0713 UTC English on 1008??
I thought it seemed English as at 0615 I could tell woman said something about Communism. At 0713, another slight brief fade-up, with man seemingly in English? Is this possible at all that someone could be here in English? Or maybe another languge where a few of their words are pronounced about the same as in English? Thanks in advance for any info. 73, George S., MN (using Eton E1 w/8 Quantum loop). ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] TP in DC!
Following Bill Harms Bruce Conti's posts I caught audio on 747 this morning at 1104utc. Watched vertical trace on the waterfall from about 1050utc until it got strong enough to catch snatches of woman in Japanese for a few minutes. Of course, in my excitement, I seem to have made a 'shortcut' by the name of 'japan' rather than a wav file! :-(( Other traces seen on 774 and 1134kHz. Everything gone by 1130utc but I'll definitely be back tomorrow! Re: [IRCA] No TPs in New Jersey so far
At about 1104 or 1105 (11/8), I started to hear some audio on 747, and then my computer crashed. (Maybe it couldn't handle the hot DX from Asia). Anyway, I am sure we had Japan, but I have little proof to back it up. It was someone talking presumably a woman, I am guessing in Japanese. I am not a list logger, but the temptation to count this is intense. How else could it be? At Least Brett has a recording of it. We also had a solid carrier and audio on 945. Hopefully, we can ID the language at least. Bill Harms Long Beach Island, New Jersey Bill Harms wrote: It doesn't look good here in New Jersey. [IRCA] Alberta TPs for 8 Nov 2009
Still a few interesting signals, but definitely the worst day of the last several here. In general Japan seemed favoured, with the big guns doing very well (particularly 693), and a number of the second tier ones in also. The best catch was likely NHK on 846, which is a rare visitor here. The Chinese were down somewhat, with the exception of 1206, which had one of its best signals of the season for some reason. VOA Thailand was down to weak audio today after doing very well the past 3 mornings. 73, Nigel Pimblett Dunmore, Alberta ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] TPs from Orcas: Nov 8
I'm still living in the glow of Farda and Pori and plotting an assault on Iran tonight... I had a second maybe Iran on 1026... But to the present: It was a good but not great late season morning. Most of the lower band had audio at one time or another. The upper band was less populated, but still doing quite well. There was really nothing new that I could identify, but still, there were points of interest: 594 had someone walking all over them at 1430. Sounded CC. Later was all NHK 720 CNR2 was mostly excellent from 1430 on 756 CNR1 was excellent at 1445 1152 was NHK2 synchros at around 1505 Just before dawn, a CC was on woith the usual VOA on 1575 The real boost seemed to be post-dawn (after 1505) on the upper half of the dial. Most of the usual JJ and CC suspects, including 1350 and 1440. Most of the AM, HLAZ-1566 had a big fat carrier and almost no modulation. It was worth spending the morning at the dials, but it's only 8 hours until Middle Eastern fade-in. Here's hoping!. [IRCA] MW loggings from the South Pacific for 7 November, 2009, and a few from the 8th.
MW observations for 7 November 2009 from the Tasman Sea between Tasmania and New Zealand aboard the HAL Amsterdam using a modified Eton e100 receiver. Satellite is down tonight, so I'll have to try this again in the morning. New Zealand stations are dominating despite being only a third way across the Tasman: 531: More FM ID noted about 08:05 on 8 Nov. Listed as Alexandra, Otago with 2 kW. 567: RNZ National, Wellington at excellent level at 09:10 594: 2 cochannel. Presumably an Aussie and Radio Rhema, with 2 listed in PAL, but most likely the 5 kW tx at Timaru. Also heard the following evening at excellent level. 657: Southern Star network with frequent IDs at excellent level at 09:15. Ads for Springs Road Auto Services, Hornby and for Petworld in Christchurch. Many // noted. Presumably the 50 kW tx in Wellington. 693: Radio Sport, Dunedin at 5 kW dominating another cochannel from Australia (with an ad for solar power). 765: 2EC with local ID at 09:24 at good level, into song, “Monday, Monday”. 5 kW located in Bega, NSW. 873: 2GB, The Talk of Sydney with 10 kW(day)/5 kW (night) at excellent level with a Sydney cabbie being interviewed. 909: Southern Star, Napier with 5 kW with network ID at 09:30. Very good. 927: Newstalk ZB, Palmerston North with 2 kW at very good level, // 945 Gisbourne also 2 kW at fair/good level with talk about appliance repair in Auckland. 990: unid ethnic station with call-in program, cochannel with play-by play station which was also // to 1008 (excellent level). I wonder whether the 990 station is Radio Trackside, Nelson with 1 kW, while the 1008 was Newstalk ZB, Tauranga at 10 kW? 1026: The Word, Invercargill at 2.5 kW with religious program about Moses. Very good reception. I’ve never heard of this network before. 1062: Radio Sport, Wanganui at 1 kW with “Radio Sport news” (later weather), and TC for “6 minutes after 10”. 09:06 UTC. Very good reception. 1080: Newstalk ZB, Auckland at 10 kW, cochannel an unid CW station. 1107: SBS Radio, Sydney with 5 kW with ethnic programming (sounds Cantonese) cochannel another ethnic unid station. 1180: My one and only 10 kHz station heard at fair level in SS. This one is apparently VOA/Radio Marti from Marathon, Fl according to John from Sydney. I’m pleased about this catch! 1224: SBS Radio, Melbourne with 5 kW in Cantonese at 09:38 at very good level. 1287: Newstalk ZB ID at 09:39 into music. The most recent PAL lists this one as Radio Sport, but very good reception and positive ID noted. Location listed as Westport with 2 kW. Noted at same time // to 1296 at exc level which is Hamilton at 2.5 kW. 1314: Play by play with echo noted. PAL lists 2 sports radio stations from Australia (the NZ stations listed don’t match the format), so it seems that they were both playing the same play by play? 3BT is Sports 927 in Balarat, Victoria with 5 kW and 2ZW is 2KY Racing Radio in Wollongong, NSW also with 5 kW. Interesting! 1386: Radio Tarana, Auckland at 10 kW with Hindi programming at 09:42 at very good level. 1422: Very strong station with Indian music, at least that’s what it sounded like to me at very good level. PAL notes only Radio Hellas from Melbourne with 5 kW, though. 1440: 1SBS, Canberra with 2 kW with Cantonese programming at 09:44 at fair/good level. 1494: 2AY ID at fair level at 09:45. This is from Albury, NSW with 2 kW. How I wish I had my Perseus SDR with me to catch a few TOH segments for future fun! Oh well, standing at the aft end of the ship with my Eton receiver is still loads of fun, but has had people looking twice at me! Cheers from the Tasman! ……Walt Salmaniw PS: One SW logging, thanks to John in Sydney: 08:00 7325 Wantok Radio Light from PNG with low modulation talk after spiritual music around 08:01, presumed ID at fair to good level using Colin Newell’s Grundig Aviator G6. [IRCA] TP for 8 Nov from Victoria, BC
Listened for about an hour from 1420 today, and although there was a sunrise enhancement as John observed, in my case it was compared with a pronounced dip around 1445, and seemed due quite a lot to the fading of domestic splatter rather than a significant increase in signal strength. As Nigel noted, it was more a Japanese morning. Generally, I'd also say it was a poorer morning than the last few; the more consistent stations outside of the big guns tended to be at mumble level. So, DXing was of the hard grind school, listening mostly to splatter, but it did yield one new one, JOGK-756 //594. And, 648 is on past 1500UT, but was at the mumble level with a RR sound to it? pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least briefly): 594 JOAK 774 JOUB, something underneath 828 JOBB reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise): 279 R. [IRCA] Wellbrook versus Beverage comparisons
Nick Hall-Patch had his ALA-100 array at Grayland with myself and Bruce Portzer Oct. 3 and 4. During that period, we compared it with a 1400' Beverage at 320 degrees that was terminated via 3 six foot ground rods. A different antenna than a 600' Beverage, to be sure. It was no contest at all according to Nick. The Beverage was in a league by itself. Perhaps Nick can provide details if needed. The Beverage provided Chinese adio on at least 111 channels, and there are some recordings still in the can that I have not checked. Chuck ___ On Nov. 3 John Bryant wrote: Kaz, CLIP I'm just amazed at the progress in antenna design that has been made, mostly by Andy and Wellbrook, but also some others working on their own and Dallas Lankford teaming up with Guy Atkins. The first step in this whole revolution was the growing appreciation of large, broadband single turned loops, vertically, as antennas. The Wellbrook ALA100, still an exceptional antenna, was one of the prominent commercial versions of that movement. The advantage in noise rejection, relatively small footprint and relative stealthiness made it a real winner for DXers on small urban and suburban lots. Its classic wide figure-of-8 pattern was an advantage in many applications and a weakness only for DXers desiring either much narrower lobes or a cardoid, uni-directional pattern (or both). I'd guess that the ALA100 will be a staple in Wellbrook's lineup for many years to come. As phasing developed over the years, most of the work (Misek, Connelly) focused on combining signals from two long wire antennas, usually Beverages until the last decade, or so. Most phasers were also designs that required at least tweaking at each frequency of interest. DXers did and still do amazing things with that technology. Three things excited me about Andy's original phased array: a) the fact that it was broadband, basically allowing the DXer to set and forget b) the fact that it was based on two small ALA100 loops, excellent antennas themselves, arranged in a fairly small footprint and c) that it was reversible with the flick of a switch. One array of two loops could cover the horizon, but two pairs (N, S, E, W) cloudy really cover the horizon. I loved that array and found that it equaled or surpassed the short 600' and 900' Beverages that I routinely deploy at Grayland. That original ALA-100 Array is still the best antenna in some limited situations, IMHO. That i! s the antenna that I've used for the past 30 months or so and I still love it.

[IRCA] Kona TP for 8 Nov 2009
Listened from 1600 to 1615 with the E1 and ALA100M dial was pretty light up but not what I would consider a spectacular morning - the DUs were somewhat subdued with JJ and KK stations dominating the lower bands. From memory (just starting to write stuff down now...) 531 - jumble with nothing dominating -- actual station on 530 but no idea who (Hawaiian TIS?) 540 - absence of Samoa at this hour (which rules the entire evening...) and a mix of CC soundind stuff 548 - just a big het against the local 550 558, 567 JJ 576 - thinks Russia by the content (279 was solid all evening from about 0700UTC on) 594 - noted the absence of JJ here and a muddle of other stuff 603 - KK sounding programming similar to what we hear on the WC Mainland 612 - noted absence of anything unusual in the wake of semi-local 620 639 - nothing dominating w/ grinding het fro EE (either AK or CAL on 640) 650 - KORL all the time 657 - Monster sized DPRK // 3220 666 - jumble 675 - murmurs what might have been Vietnam 690 - semi-local 693 - probably the JJ pushing its way past the QRM 702 - jumble 720 - semi-local 729 - jumble against 730-Vancouve 738- Tahiti dominating the evening drops down or shuts off to reveal Asian free-for-all mostly CC sounding 747 - Japan 756 - muddle 774 - mix of stuff struggling against 770 Island station 810 - Jumble 828 - noted lack of JJ 846 - Island something or other all evening 855 - channel of growls (KK most likely...) 891 - mix glossed up to around 963 and noted mix of CRI 972 - Korean mammoth signal only bested at this hour by 657 DPRK Above here a mix of EE and Asian stuff starts to duke it out. Will do a better upper band tomorrow morning. What is interesting is that there are so many 9 channels with a really gritty mix of stuff going on - and then there are the channels where one Asian station utterly rules - kind of like North American clear channels - most notable above 1100 khz and really noticeable above 1200. Examples: 1278, 1287, 1314, 1440 are channels with anchors on them... frequencies like 1548, 1557, 1566, 1575, 1593 are likely to have what you would expect to hear on them -- like Aus, Korea, Thailand and China -- but not always... 1575 today had Thailand with VOA type stuff on it -- but underneath that was EE programming with an Asian slant -- and they were close to being equal. And so it goes. More this evening. -- .. [IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 11-8...Strangely Uneven
Hello All, Although this morning's general TP propagation was certainly down from the last two days, for some odd reason the NHK powerhouses (especially 693-JOAB, also noted by Nigel) were the strongest they have been all November. Unfortunately the strong Japanese signals (594, 693, 747, 774 and 828 kHz) were not matched by good signals from the rest of Asia, and there seemed to be little co-channel activity on these frequencies. There was a weak co-channel on 693 kHz mixing with JOAB during one of its fades around 1455, but even here the splatter from CBU made it too tough to dig out enough audio for language recognition. Like John I heard the UnID Chinese on 594 kHz mixing with JOAK around 1435, but there was no sign of the elusive Korean. The modified ICF-2010 had a strong carrier at 1445 on 1503 kHz presumably from JOUK (as reported by Nick), but neither of the experimental oversized loops used this morning (9' and 6' sided tuned passive type) were set up to tune that high, so it will have to wait for another day. With the exception of the vibrant Japanese signals, the rest of the band seemed pretty modest this morning-- kind of a reversal of the situation prevailing throughout November so far. Congratulations also to John for logging his first TA's on Orcas Island. With the rapid-response TA-chasing team of Nick, Bruce, Nigel. Patrick and others giving constant updates on this IRCA reflector, it's easy to know when the TA's are exciting, and when they are tanking (like last night). 73, Gary DeBock Spotting receiver: Modified ICF-2010 (30 loopstick) Main receiver: Modified C.Crane SWP ultralight (7.5 Slider loopstick + CFJ455K5 filter) 9' and 6' (side) PVC-framed tuned passive loops (in the back yard) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] Wellbrook versus Beverage comparisons
At 18:22 11/8/2009, you wrote: Nick Hall-Patch had his ALA-100 array at Grayland with myself and Bruce Portzer Oct. I might want to temper what Chuck has said, seeing that I am on the record now . First, the Wellbrook array could hear some things better than the big Beverage could. For example, no KFBK-1530 on the array at all except in reverse position. 1530 was effectively an Asian channel on the array, and I could hear Japanese trading places that were just garbage fighting under what was left of KFBK on the Beverage. A phased pair of Beverages would possibly (likely?) have levelled that playing field. If there was a distinct source of interference off the back end, the Wellbrook could deliver a better signal to splatter ratio. This did not always mean a better quality of DX however, because, sorry guys, size matters, at least in the antenna world; I won't venture into other worlds, but I'm sure the contents of your junk folder will tell you all you need to know. I don't really know the technical reasons for this, but it makes sense that a big antenna will deliver a more robust signal than a smaller one will. In the demodulation process, generally the more signal you have, especially in those AM sidebands, the better the readability you will have, even if there is relatively more interference as well (within limits). This is I believe the source of the difference Chuck alludes to. I've observed this locally, comparing a fine Flag antenna I have versus a more haphazard corner fed loop which has about twice the enclosed area. The Flag has observably better rejection off the back end (thereby nulling all my domestic interference with varying degrees of effectiveness), and is a quiet joy to listen with. But the corner fed loop, relatively extra splatter and all, often delivers more readable DX, as it is enclosing a larger portion of the incoming wave fronts, and delivering more raw signal which is demodulated better. It's crisper, less murky, i.e. more readable, and it looks good on the S-meter too. (and yes, bulking up the Flag's signal with a preamplifier to match the corner-fed's signal often doesn't seem to be enough) If it's a matter of real estate, the Wellbrook array wins every time however. 50m worth of a straight line will get you a darned nice antenna with, in this part of the world, rejection of pretty much all of North America's signals, leaving you with a great starting place to hear Asia and Oceania. 50m of wire will get you world class splatter in the same location, no matter how well you match it to your receiver. What is staggering about the Wellbrook array is that, according to John Bryant, it is competitive with a 600m wire, which is a Beverage antenna, at least above 1000kHz. With the price of land, that's a serious advantage. Having said all that, my feeling (and it is mostly a feeling) at this point is that if you have the opportunity to use a man-sized Beverage antenna, especially if you can enhance it with phasing as with Neil's BOGs, then you will still likely hear better DX than with the smaller and truly wonderful phased arrays. It's up to you to decide how many more years you will wait until retirement in order to be able to afford the land needed for a serious Beverage array at the seashore, hi. best wishes, Nick * Nick Hall-Patch Victoria, BC Canada ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 11-8...Strangely Uneven
d1028g...@aol.com wrote: Hello All, Although this morning's general TP propagation was certainly down from the last two days, for some odd reason the NHK powerhouses (especially 693-JOAB, also noted by Nigel) were the strongest they have been all November. 73, Gary DeBock Spotting receiver: Modified ICF-2010 (30 loopstick) Main receiver: Modified C.Crane SWP ultralight (7.5 Slider loopstick + CFJ455K5 filter) 9' and 6' (side) PVC-framed tuned passive loops (in the back yard) Gary, I was going to say that I was envious of you guys hearing all that TA activity. Then I looked out the window, and no, I'm not so envious. We just left Milford Sound on the west coast of the south island of New Zealand, and it is truly one of God's great gifts. What an absolutely wonderful place to enjoy the majesty of the great outdoors. Having come from some very nice temperatures, though, things were mighty frigid this morning with an icy wind blasting down the sound as we entered. 90 minutes later, my teeth were chattering as I retreated to the Lido deck and a warm cup of hot chocolate and some Dutch split pea soup. Life is very good aboard. I can highly recommend this trip for anyone with a sense of adventure! There's even time to do some DXing on top of all of the other activities. The internet access for the most part is excellent, considering it is via satellite and rather pricey. We even called home this morning ($20 for 12 minutes), a far cry from the $12 a minute or so from the last time we cruised. Good DX to all, and am glad to hear that Colin is having a great time. Believe me, Colin, I share your view on how DXing can impose on paradise!!!
