[IRCA] Pacific DX Report for 20 November, 2009: From Tonga to Samoa

2009-11-21 Thread Walter Salmaniw

Pacific DX Report for 20 November 2009: From Tonga to Samoa

*/ /*

Well we’re into UTC November 21^st , having left Samoa bound for Hawaii,
which is 4 or 5 days of open ocean or about 2600 miles or so…our longest
stretch by far. When I came out to my usual perch on the aft end Lido
deck, there was a tropical monsoon with the wind and rain and somewhat
churning seas, and rather muggy on top of all that. Let me back up a
moment and tell you about Samoa. If there’s a single island nation to
visit in the South Pacific, then it has to be Samoa (with it’s charming
capital, Apia). Robert Louis Stephenson came here seeking a cure for his
tuberculosis, fell in love with the place, built a lovely home up in the
“mountains” and died there five years later. He’s buried on top of the
hill overlooking his home. I can sure understand why he loved this place
so much. It’s very lush and green, and the coastline is equally
beautiful. Overall, it’s a stark contrast to Tonga, which is a very flat
country, and much poorer by contrast. Here, the roads are very good, and
the homes very attractive. Each one also has a structure, roofed, but
completely open on the sides which is used on hot nights to sleep, and
as I understand it, to house relatives who come to visit.

We hired a van for the day, working out to $30 each and saw all of the
sights and sounds of the place, and even went sliding down a series of
waterfalls, and later swam in a freshwater cave on the coast with a
connecting tunnel to another cave (not for the claustrophobe!), perhaps
5 feet deep and the tunnel itself about 2’ in height and 10’ long. Of
course I had to try it, trusting our very knowledgeable guide to count
to 5 and be through to the other side…He was correct, and I’m still here
to report on things. Samoa, previously known as Western Samoa, gained
it’s independence from New Zealand in 1962. It had been a German colony
until after World War I, before being ceded to the Kiwi’s after the war.
American Samoa is only about 90 miles away. On a radio related note, I
did check for their AM stations, and failed to hear any at all (I tried
630, 648, 720, and 900). American Samoa suffered the effects of the
tsunami recently much worse than did Samoa, although the north shore was
hit and destroyed some resorts on that side, opposite to Apia. I saw no
evidence of damage on our long day on the road.

2AP on 540 sits prominently just off the downtown core of Apia, with
it’s large single tower perhaps 75 meters from the water’s edge.
Reception, of course, is excellent throughout the island and perhaps a
few hundred miles around. There are no other AM transmitters on the
island nation.

Last night I monitored for a while and noted many more North American
stations audible, especially in the 1100 to 1200 range. I also listened
to the sign-off of 2AP, and my results are listed below. For SW buffs,
Radio Malaysia is absolutely armchair around 08:00 on 15295 with their
Voice of Islam program.

530: No sign of Alaskan beacons yet, despite me hearing quite a few MW
stations from the area.

540: 2AP, Apia Samoa with English news at tune-in at 08:08 until
08:11:30, announcing “Radio 2AP news”, which I initially didn’t
understand due to the Samoan accent. Into Christmas carols. Excellent
reception. Retuned at 09:59 to hear the NA, then OC was left on. Under
this, I could clearly hear the CBC news until 10:04:30, and then this
went into BBC Outlook program. Perhaps the transmitter’s location can be
ID’d from these details, but my assumption is that this is from Winnipeg
(I think). Not a bad catch!

558: Radio Fiji 1 at fair to good level, with what sounds like a
religious program (mentions of Jesus). //639 at good level at 08:33
(perhaps they beam northward? Since not well heard further south), 684
(good level), 927 (fair/good), 1152 (fair/good). See my note for Radio
Fiji 2 on 1467 below.

560: Coast to Coast AM at good level at 08:35

570: poor to fair level, with mentions of $250,000.

580: Good to very good reception with mentions of Fresno. Sure puts out
well!

590: EZL music

621: I did hear an American accented preacher at 08:18 at poor to fair
level. I was hoping that this might be Tuvalu, but I suspect that it was
only NZ’s Rhema. Darn!

Footnote here: I have been a bit underwhelmed by the lack of Pacific
stations to be heard on MW. I had thought that with the big blue ocean
surrounding me, that I’d be hearing Vanuatu, The Marshalls, Guam, Cook
Islands, etc at armchair level, but such is not the case!

648: Again, hoping for WVUV, but instead go the NZ’s Rhema ID at 08:33
after a program with the same American preacher.

650: 2 cochannels, one being Alaska, and another unid. Fair to good level.

657: NZ here still at very good level (many NZ stations are still
audible, but most are at fair level only)

666: RFO Noumea only weakly heard now. Definitely must beam more to the
south than in my

Exactly -- from Kona one hears
540 Samoa, 738 Tahiti, a lot of OC on 846,
Marshalls on 1098 and some weak Fiji stuff.

The dominant non-Hawaii, non-mainland signals
are all Japanese, all the time...
A testament to their installations and quality of

With one week left, looking for some good Philippine

and the sub-continent countries...

2009-11-21 Thread Patrick Martin
Paul,

1130 Mt Angel still has a reasonable amount of signal here days to the
NW of there at 90+ miles and I am surprised they are allowed that much
signal to the N/NW period. CKWX puts a fair amount of signal to the
South into Washington state.
I am wondering if they cleared it with the Canadians? I wonder if the
guys can hear them in the Seattle area?

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 21 Nov 2009

2009-11-21 Thread Nigel Pimblett
With the solar wind up over 500 and the K index at 3 I was surprised
to hear much TPs of any sort, so I'll take this morning's modest offerings:

594 Japan (non-existant until after 1440)
693 Japan
702 Japan //693 (with no sign of yesterday's Korean)
747 Japan (just barely there)
774 Japan
873 Japan
972 S Korea
1134 S.Korea (very weak audio, //972)
1170 S.Korea
1242 Japan for a minute or so
1422 Japan, briefly
1503 weak audio, seemed Japanese, but 567/594 were so bad I couldn't get
a parallel

1566 S.Korea, big carrier, with just the faintest of audio
1593 China CNR1

[IRCA] TP DX This morning

2009-11-21 Thread Bruce Portzer

Overall, this was not a great morning but there were a few bright spots.

KYUK-640 had the best signal I've ever heard from them at home. There
was also a standards station on 590 mixing with KUGN and KQNT. It was
from the same satellite feed as KGTL-620, so I'm assuming KHAR
Anchorage, but no ID was heard.

My 1098 mystery station was back again, and a bit better than normal.
It had a great carrier, but not so great modulation. I still can't
decide on the language. I'm pretty sure its not Japanese or standard
Chinese, but I haven't ruled out Korean or Mongolian. Oddly enough,
other mid band regulars like 981 1017 1035 1071 1134 1170 and 1206 were
weak or missing today. Heck, maybe the Micronesian station is now on 24
hours... I wish I knew

Japan on 594 was close to average, but the NHK powerhouses on 693 747
774 and 828 were all well below normal.

Most of the action was at the low end of the dial. The middle and high
end were generally not too good

Here is what my SDR captured today:

Really good audio, mostly understandable by a native speaker, even if it
was for short periods

594 JOAK
640 KYUK
750 KFQD mixing with KXL

OK audio, some of it understandable by a native speaker, even if just
for a short period

747JOIB
774JOUB up and down a lot
780KNOM mixing w/KKOB
972 Korea

Marginal audio, could recognize program content and maybe ID the
language, but generally not understandably

549 Mayak
558 unid
567JOBK
612 JOLK
648 VoR
666 JOIK
693 JOAB
729 JOCK
738 Unid, Taiwan and/or KBS
783 Unid, sure wish I could figure out who this one is
828 JOBB
1098 Unid
1206 Yanbian

Carriers, possibly with bit of real or imaginary audio
531 585 603 675 837 846 855 864 891 981 1026 1053 1215 1242 1278 1287

1098 is on all the time (Marshall Islands...)
their programming ends somewhere between 1000 and 1100UTC
from one of my last checks.

Their carrier is on through LSR
Their modulation tends to run between 60 to 80%
and their audio is unusually bassy

I will see if I can hear anything underneath this
carrier in my morning listening period.

Interesting observation about Hawaii based listening -
there does not seem to be a very lengthly post dawn
window of listening - when the Sun comes up, the signals
go down.

[IRCA] 1130 Mt. Angel

2009-11-21 Thread Patrick Martin
Is anyone in the Puget Sound area getting the tone Mt. Angel is running,
during the day? I am wondering how good their null is to the NW. Here
on the Oregon coast, the NE EWE gets rid of 95% of it. If the signal is
on nights, there is no sgn of it here, but the 490w direction to the SW
has a pretty tight null to the NW.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 11-21...One Surprise

2009-11-21 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

With some new motivation after the late-season new TP logging of 1503-JOUK
yesterday, this morning's ambitious plan was to go after a few stations
reported recently by others, like the 675-NHK1 station reported recently by
Nick and Bruce, and the 612-NHK1 station heard by Nick.

Conditions in general seemed down from yesterday, however, and although
675 kHz had weak audio, the frequency suffered from heavy domestic splatter.
1134 kHz had CNR1 again, but not at yesterday's stellar signal level. As
usual, 612 kHz suffered from un-nullable 610-KONA splatter. Although this
back side domestic QRM is unusual when chasing TP's on the west coast, Mark
Connelly's warning about QRM from the back side of tuned passive loops comes
to mind.

On the positive side 1503-JOUK was at fairly decent audio level for much of
the morning ( // 594 kHz), and 738-Taiwan Fisheries had its usual
powerhouse signal here from 1430-1500. 765 kHz also had weak audio (apparent
Korean talk), a rare reception here next to the 770-KTTH semi-local pest.

About the only unusual occurrence happened at 1502 UTC, when 594-JOAK
(which had been strong and alone on 594 kHz from 1435-1500) was suddenly
pestered by the KBS1 Korean, and the Japanese NHK news suddenly became the
Japanese/Korean news:

_http://www.mediafire.com/?zwwgmhnrjdt_
(http://www.mediafire.com/?zwwgmhnrjdt)

This mix of JOAK and the Korean was over by 1505, though, and was very
unusual for a TP morning without any other co-channels competing with the NHK
powerhouses. Except for this 594-Korean surprise, the morning was fairly
mundane, as others have reported, and a typical late-season TP session. It's
much more fun to read the exotic DX reports from Walt and Colin :-)

Spotting receiver: Modified ICF-2010 (30 loopstick)
Main receiver: Modified C.Crane SWP (7.5 Slider loopstick + CFJ455K5 IF

Re: [IRCA] lack of post dawn enhancement in the tropics

2009-11-21 Thread Walter Salmaniw

c...@islandnet.com wrote:

My 1098 mystery station was back again, and a bit better than normal.
It had a great carrier, but not so great modulation. I still can't
decide on the language. I'm pretty sure its not Japanese or standard
Chinese, but I haven't ruled out Korean or Mongolian. Oddly enough,
other mid band regulars like 981 1017 1035 1071 1134 1170 and 1206 were
weak or missing today. Heck, maybe the Micronesian station is now on 24
hours... I wish I knew

Interesting observation about Hawaii based listening -
there does not seem to be a very lengthly post dawn
window of listening - when the Sun comes up, the signals
go down.
--

Interesting that I'm not hearing much from the Marshall's down here in
the south Pacific compared to you (and for that matter in WCNA earlier
in the season). I suspect that this will change in the upcoming days.
We're still south of the Equator, and man, is it hot! I've been running
around the Sports deck for 30 or 40 minutes daily around noon, but
today, I thought I'd better get out early and so I ran around 08:30
amstill hot as Haides! Man, I had to drink a lot of water. As long
as one's in the shade with some breeze, it's fairly pleasant. Don't
know how those sun-worshipers do it out there (they're mostly Europeans,
it seems...haven't caught on to the melanoma risks!).
Re the lack of post dawn enhancement: my assumption is that this is due
to the sun rising and falling very rapidly in the tropics compared to
our northern climes where the whole process takes much longer. Down
here, there's the sun going down, and bang, it's gone! Perhaps the
ionosphere acts the same way! Anyway, back to checking my emails. I
better get spending more time on-line as I'm not even half way through
my 1000 minutes purchased and we're 11 days from docking in Long Beach,
CA! Cheers!.Walt.

Bruce, I'll add this to my check list. Should be easy to do as we get
closer to Hawaii, as Colin's been hearing them well, as opposed to me in
the South Pacific. By the way, I trust you read my American Samoa

And WCKY 1530's is off. The exciters for IBOC probably broke. It's not
uncommon. WLAC's has been off for a couple weeks. It is coming in loudly
but I can hear 1520 and no decoding of either 1510 or 1530.

From the 'For-what-it-is-worth' category:

WLAC-1510 appears to have it's IBOC signal turned off. I can hear WFED
(X-WTOP) on 1500 and Oklahoma City on 1520. These stations are not heard
when WLAC is on with IBOC.

Many 50 kw regionals in Canada..
CKOC-1150 and CIWW-1310 to mention two that aren't likely to switch to FM.

James,

Off the top of my head, I can't think of one, but I know they are there...
A

Class B AM station would be a regional, so just find one with 50KW

This morning 1566 had a solid carrier with a slight break at 1800 ut and
lasted well past local noon. 1575 Farda was also in late morning and early
afternoon until about 2pm local when everything faded out.

With the solar wind up over 500 and the K index at 3 I was surprised to
hear much TPs of any sort, so I'll take this morning's modest offerings:

 594 Japan (non-existant until after 1440)
 693 Japan
702 Japan //693 (with no sign of yesterday's Korean)
 747 Japan (just barely there)
 774 Japan
 873 Japan
 972 S Korea
 1134 S.Korea (very weak audio, //972)
 1170 S.Korea
1242 Japan for a minute or so
 1422 Japan, briefly
1503 weak audio, seemed Japanese, but 567/594 were so bad I couldn't get a
 parallel
1566 S.Korea, big carrier, with just the faintest of audio
 1593 China CNR1
