Re: [IRCA] Return from Kona

2009-11-27 Thread Patrick Martin
Colin,

Great reports from Kona. I did a bit of DXing with the SuperRadio from
Hilo on my trips over in the 80s & 90s, but from the East Coast and I
got lots on mainland stations unfortunately. I wish I would have DXed
from Kona when I was there in 1990. I only spent one night at Kona.

[IRCA] Return from Kona

2009-11-27 Thread cafe
Back home on the West Coast.

I would like to say that DXing from Kona is stunning --
the potential for trawling for layers and layers of Coastal
and Central Asian DX is prime...

But. It is a totally different experience from
West Coast dxing where you actually have to work at it.
I suppose a good dxer could apply some skills to reach further
inland -- to the sub-continent and the middle east - and who knows,
even Europe on a westerly path.

2 strikes against: I had a moderately noisy environment that was
very unpredictable - tended to improve throughout the evening
but had an S5 to S9 "frying" noise level from long wave through to
about 900khz - that would stop abruptly later on in the evening...
Strike 1.
Strike 2: I do not consider myself the most accomplished dxer nor
do I think that I am that motivated - at least consistently.
To be really good at this is much like being good at the guitar
or fishing or some other vocation where practice is necessary
to maintain sharpness - you have to put in the hours.

What occurred to me while plunking around the tropical bands
and what SW activity I could find (and there is lots...)
was that I am out of touch with SW from the perspective
of having a "air traffic control" sense of what is where... and
when. I do not have the big picture any more.

This time I brought the Eton E1 and the ALA100M with me.
It performed flawlessly.
I had no trouble with the TSA in Kona or Seattle. Actually,
I find that airport security in the U.S. and Canada is
easy to deal with - show some respect, get some respect. Simple as that.
And understand what they are trying to do.

Next time. Smaller radio.
The E100 slider is really all the radio one needs to do some serious
listening in Hawaii. An un-enhanced radio does not cut it because
Hawaii is a deep fringe area for AM and LW.

More later,

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 11-27...

2009-11-27 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

This morning's TP session would have been a clunker in October, but for
late November, it was probably the best one could hope for.

Signals were improved over yesterday (but that's not saying much).
594-JOAK was heard mixing with the UnID Chinese co-channel at 1510, the first
time
the 594 kHz Chinese has been heard here in late November:

_http://www.mediafire.com/?dxhguvjwyjy_
(http://www.mediafire.com/?dxhguvjwyjy)

657-Pyongyang had a pretty strong warbling carrier from 1515-1530, with no
detectable audio (maybe that's not such a bad thing). 675-Vietnam also
had a decent signal (with audio) around this time, but no weak co-channels
could be heard because of the domestic splatter from 670 and 680 kHz.

As usual recently the high band was practically dead, with only two wispy
carriers from 1566 and 1575 during the entire 1510-1540 UTC monitoring
period. The usual low-band powerhouses like 603-HLSA and 639-CNR1 were
practically silent, and even JOIB-747 had difficulty staying in audio. So in
general the band seemed to be in transition to the winter doldrums, with a few
isolated surprises.

[IRCA] TP for 27 Nov from Victoria, BC

2009-11-27 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Not a morning to remember... two listening sessions, one at 1450UT and one at
1520UT. The latter had more action, but still pretty poor; most on the sunrise
enhancement seemed due to the falling off of domestic splatter. Any Chinese
this morning were at very low levels.

pretty darn good audio, at least briefly (all of it understandable by a native
speaker)

594 JOAK not until 1523UT
774 JOUB not until 1537UT
828 JOBB not until 1528UT

reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker,
though often battling w/splash or noise):

567 JOIK //594
747 JOIB
972 HLCA at 1459, often much poorer

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker

279 R. Rossii
603 sounded KK at 1525UT, but not //558 which might have been JOCR I guess
612 4QR at 1524 EE talk, and DU bearing
1269 the surprise of the morning; mx, seemed //1287 which was poorer yet, so
JOHW most likely

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

558
639 seemed //5030 so CNR-1
666 JOBK //594 at 1534
675 after 1530UT
936 at 1541 sounded like CC talk, so Anhui
954 at 1542
963 CRI??
1134 mx, not //972 or 5030, so JOQR?
1143
1242 at 1541
1287
1503 //594 so JOUK
1575 likely VoA

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

1566 now and again; 1098 which was likely Marshalls per DF

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] TPs from Orcas Island: Nov. 27

2009-11-27 Thread John H. Bryant
Well, if this isn't the beginning of the dreaded Mid-Winter Anomaly,
it is certainly a great imitation of it! Conditions were down, even
from yesterday's poor showing. The only non-murmur above 972 was VOA
1575 and it wasn't all that wonderful. Below 972, there were a few
of the biggest JJ guns in something like decent audio and quite a few
murmurs of other big giuns. If I was used to swapping over to
domestic DXing out here, now is when I'd swap.

Gee, if things were booming in, I'd find it much harder to head for
Oklahoma. As it is.

Re: [IRCA] 1040 Van BC

2009-11-27 Thread Patrick Martin
The FCC site shows the regular coverage map and the new ones, but the
new ones look the same as the old ones, but 1040 is weaker here at night
now. CFUN 1410 on the otherhand shows the same pattern day & night and
in the past it was different at night, but it looks like they may be
using the night one all of the time.
