Re: [IRCA] KENC 1620

2009-11-30 Thread Patrick Martin
Of course it is not legal, but according to the FCC, unless someone
complains, the FCC does not investagate. I guess if a pirate was in a
really rural area, miles away from another station, they could operate
for many years. Maybe in SE Oregon, where there are no towns of over a
hundred or so people.

There is an unlicensed FMer about a mile away on 104.9. I guess the
station probably runs 1 watt or less, but gets out a couple or three

[IRCA] KENC 1620

2009-11-30 Thread Bruce Portzer
The FCC has shut down KENC-1620 in Stayton OR, a low powered unlicensed
station that had apparently been operating well beyond the Part 15 power
limits. I hadn't known about this station until I came across the
newspaper article on-line.
http://www.statesmanjournal.com/article/20091125/COMMUNITIES/911250360/1133/KENC-no-longer-on-air

KENC even has (had) a website with the owner's version of the story and
other information about the station http://www.kencradio.com/ I don't
understand why he didn't go the LPFM route, which would give him better
coverage.

Last week it 1040 with local signal in Victoria. today it's 1410 with a near

possible to transmit two frequencies from one tower site? I thinjk they are
switching back and forth between the two.Can anyone confirm this? Thanks .Bill

remained audible well into the late morning and some were in all day.Sunday's
reception went dead already at 8 AM.Quite a difference over the two days.Bill

2009-11-30 Thread D1028Gary
Hi Colin,

Thanks very much for your detailed DX reports from Kona and Hilo, Hawaii,
which certainly were far more exotic than any DX going on here (or
seemingly, in the rest of Puget Sound) in late November.

The extensive TP and DU reports from you and Walt certainly helped to
brighten up the demise of our local Asian DX season, and showed us all how
portable receivers in strategic locations can bring in a ton of exciting DX.

73 and Thanks, Gary

[IRCA] TP for 30 Nov from Victoria, BC

2009-11-30 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Welll, this morning I was just about competitive with John (now that his
receivers are packed away, hi). We'll miss those reports of what you can
REALLY hear in this neck of the woods John. But I understand that TPs are
still being heard in Oklahomaon Ultralights. Maybe that's where the TPs
have gone.

This morning's listening was from 1500 to 1525 with another brief listen at
1540UT. Signals were very erratic, and mostly poor to non existent, with the
big guns occasionally stumbling into good readability.

pretty darn good audio, at least briefly (all of it understandable by a native
speaker)

594 JOAK, the most consistent today
747 JOIB at 1506, but usually in the murk, though less so than the other NHK2's
774 JOUB not until 1517; really underperforming
828 JOBB at 1503; trading places with someone else when at lower level than this
972 HLCA not until 1520

reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker,
though often battling w/splash or noise):

...only on the way to stronger signals, and then on the way back down

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker

567 JOIK //594
612 4QR at 1514UT
873 JOGB //774
1575 VoA, but not until later

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

279 R. Rossii
558 big carrier
603 (both 558 and 603 were very messy with at least two signals each; couldn't
really winkle out the parallel)
639 CNR-1 //5030
666 JOBK //594 at 1525
675
738
1089 CC inflected talk at 1522, held up for about a minute, then disappeared
1134 seemed //972 so KBS
1422 mx at 1540UT, presumed JORF
1503 very messy w/SAH at 1540UT; didn't sound //594 (!) dunno?
1548 briefly at 1505UT; DF w/loop very ambiguous, assumed 4QD as north Flag
didn't get much of it.
1566 finally a bit of CC sounding talk at 1540UT; presumably as local noise
level drops below HLAZ' minimal sidebands

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

855 w/hum, 1098 Asia

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] Comatose TP's in Puyallup, WA

2009-11-30 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

The band was checked at 0910, 1435 and 1525 UTC for signs of Asian TP life,
with the A and K indexes near zero. Unfortunately the TP's were also near
zero-- during all three band scans.

Very anemic carriers were all that showed up from 594, 603, 747, 828 and
972 at 0910 UTC, and at 1525. The only healthy carrier was that of
657-Pyongyang at 1435, which for some reason was not warbling as usual (no
audio,
though). If these conditions are a sign of things to come, then John certainly
picked the right time to pack up and leave for Oklahoma.

During the past DU and TP-chasing seasons John's detailed DX reports have
provided many excellent tips here, and I enjoyed a very nice conversation
with him at the Grayland Motel on the evening of July 6th (a few hours
before we both chased Aussies and Kiwis). John has also been a major factor in
the booming growth of the Ultralight radio enthusiast group, especially by
creating very stylish DX Award Certificates which have proven extremely
popular. Have a safe trip, John, and thanks again for your many positive
contributions to the local TP-chasing gang.

Re: [IRCA] Some unIDs and alerts

2009-11-30 Thread HASCALL, DAVID CIV DFAS
1040: Been hearing this off and on for the past 3 months. Nothing at
s/off except a sudden power down. I checked @ 1700 EST on Saturday and
WHO was already too strong. My guess is the TOH is the only time to for
an ID but I'm not even sure if they would then.

IIRC, Rob Ross noted this too.

Are there any DX'ers in the Atlanta metro area? Georgia? Bert New???
Spice Radio - Atlanta had a webstream but it's down. Good Luck.

>From Burnt River ON tonight...

* Heard what sounded like Vietnamese on 1040 at 1747 EST ... presume the
Georgia station, will do some checking.

* What sounds very much like French on 930 coming in on unterminated
east-west wire at 2014-2135 EST underneath CFBC New Brunswick (which is
using Good Time Oldies slogan) and with WBEN Buffalo NY nulled. I am
confident this is not Haiti, as there are no Latins here at all tonight,
and I've never come close to having Haiti on 930 previously - nor seen
it reported. This is a puzzler...

* Greenville PA on 940, country and mentioning a //on 1470, is
definitely not operating at 2 watts at 2111 EST. I've had this before at
night. Tonight it's playing hard-to-get under Montreal's oldies station.

* Someone asked me awhile ago if CHNC 610 New Carlisle QC has gone off
AM in its switch to FM. I'm hearing it on AM tonight. (Same with CKDH
Amherst NS, on 900, which I heard last week in Newfoundland).

I wouldn't say conditions are amazing tonight. Slightly animated is the
way to put it. Spain in on 531, 558, 585, 837, 855. UK 909, Saudi 1521.
Many of the usual hets but not strong enough for audio. Cx were good
around 1330 EST pre-sunset with 1490 Port Jervis NY a new catch. 980
Lowell MA among relogs from New England in the two hours that followed.

One other thing: I'll send a formal reminder tomorrow, but just so y'all
know -- the WSRY 1550 Elkton MD DX Test, scheduled for early Sunday
morning (late Saturday night), is confirmed as running.

Any ideas on the 930 are appreciated. Maybe WPAT NJ runs programming
other than Spanish?

[IRCA] WSRY DX Test heard in IN (but just barely)

2009-11-30 Thread HASCALL, DAVID CIV DFAS
Thanks to Dan Oetting for arranging the WSRY DX Test. I'm not going for
a QSL as not enough made it to tape.

I followed the fun along, with the IRCA reflector and I listened from
to 0100 on both the Grundig S-350 and "baby brother" Eton E-100.
Well, I heard the DX test, but just barely. Man was it hard! The
Ontario DX'ers and even George Sherman in MN seemingly had easier times
with it. The pattern surely favored them more than I and I have two all
nighters on roughly the same beam (right down I-70). I caught enough
snippets of code ID but some of the progressive tones were the items
that stood out. The tones were roughly heard at :11, :23 and :55. WMDH
(New Castle, IN) and SS (WDLR-OH) put WSRY in a distant third spot.
CBE-ON is very rare here, thankfully. I had never ID'ed WDLR so it's
new also (now to ID the SS on 1480, which must be MI and my Far Eastern
on 1040).

Barry - WDLR is now La Que Buena.

1550 WSRY MD Elkton 11-29 0010 DX test. Poor w/progressive tones and
just barely enough CW ID (Vp) to log. Trying to fight through WMDH-IN
and WDLR-OH. Thanks to Dan Oetting! NEW! DH-IN

1550 WDLR OH Delaware 11-29 0059 F-G w/SS hits and La Que Buena slogans,
o/local WMDH. FINALLY an ID at 0059. Have heard for a few years but
never ID'ed. NEW! DH-IN

[IRCA] Non-TPs from Orcas Island

2009-11-30 Thread John H. Bryant
I had my worst TP morning of this trip mainly because I packed my
radios yesterday. Today is final packing and then tomorrow we head
down I-5 to Bakersfield/Barstow and hang a left. We are going to try
to break the trip up some this year, with a day here and half a day
there, so it will likely be about a week before we make it to the
South Prairie in Oklahoma.

Thanks very much from all of the help from the other members of the
NW Gang. One of the real pleasures of DXing out here is having such
close friends to enjoy this insanity along side. My only regret is
that I got to see so few of you in person. I totally missed the
Victoria guys this year and saw far less than half of the Seatac
crowd. Still, we've been doing this together long enough that is a
good visit, if only by e-mail. It was exactly twenty years ago this
February that Guy and I made that fabled first tip to the Grayland
motel. We heard almost every Pacific Island nation, including Tuvalu
and were hooked on TPs on MW. In March of 1990, there was a massive
DXpedition at the Grayland Beach State Park with Dave Clark from
Toronto and more than half of the NW group that is still making trips
down there.

I got a real laugh a couple of months ago when several of us were
discussing a lovely campground west of Port Angeles on the Washington
side of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It looks like a perfect place for
fall DXpeditions for Asia. Nick Hall-Patch pointed out that the worst
thing about this place was that one had to CAMP OUT. He allowed as
maybe the soft beds, flush toilets and complete kitchens in the
Grayland Motel units had spoiled him for the vagaries of CAMPING
OUT. Why I remember full well the DXpeditions in the 80s and first
half of the 90s when Nick drove his little pickup truck to various DX
sites and DXed mosta the night from the cab and then slept half the
day in the seated position all in the cab of that little truck. I
also remember going potty in the deep brush while keeping watch (both
ways) for the local mama bear and her cub.

Time marches on, eh

It's been a fabulous Fall Season... I hope that each of my
co-conspirators enjoyed it at least half as much as I did!

[IRCA] WSRY DX Test

2009-11-30 Thread Stephen S. Howe
WSRY-1550 heard in Vermont on DX test on 11/29/09 at times from
0001-0026 EST with sweep tones, Morse code IDs, and stair step tones
very weakly under mostly nulled CBE, hiss from WQEW, and an unID SS
station. An unusual interval signal-like jingle heard from the SS
station at one point. Heard using Sony ICF-2010 and Radio West loop.

Thanks to Dan Oetting for running the test.
