Mike,

Agreed. But they do it all for ratings. Money talks. Enough to run any
program that sells ads. Fear sells ads, politics sells ads. Talk radio
must do pretty well to stay on the air. Almost every market has the EIB
Network or C2C if nothing else.
I called in on Ray Breem's show on KABC years ago, 82 or 83 I think
when they were discussing DXing. I think even Richard Wood called in.

I also can't recall whether I ever re-combined the Germanies after they

You're talking to the guy who
volunteered too long ago with the NRC to create a revised
country list and hasn't done it yet after at least 5 years!
It's actually fairly complicated, with various traditions of
country-counting:  (1)  Hams seem to count
anything that has a spot of water in between as two
countries, (2) NASWA has the approach of once a country,
always a country - so there are three post-war countries in
Germany instead of one post-Wall country today - this
acknowledges that people don't like giving up countries even
though they no longer exist.   (3) NRC has an
old modified list, with some water separation, e.g. France
and Corsica are two countries, Hawaii and Alaska are
separate countries, but not nearly as many as the ham lists
I've seen.  The thing that had me stumped was the Dutch
islands in the Caribbean, which have various degrees of
autonomy from the Netherlands and with each other with
rolling dates for activating the changes. On top of that
DXers are as independent-minded about counting countries as
we are about counting domestic stations, e.g. call changes,
facility changes, COL changes, etc., so as many as would use
an official list an equal number would go their own way!

Having said all that, I'm still willing to work on
something like this. Maybe some others are interested, too.

Listened from 1345-1430 ut and weak carriers on 279, 558, 594 and than I went
by 660 and KTNN was very weak may be due to the big rain/snow storm in Arizona.
Well I could hear a very weak news station under KTNN and at 1412 ut I heard a
traffic report than weather. At 1420 ut they had a short story about the 1
meter of snow in Flagstaff than talk about Calgary. So I heard CFFR which is

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA (very early) TP's for 1-22

2010-01-22 Thread d1028gary
Hello All,

With the solar indexes finally becoming more reasonable, a very early
morning (0930-1030 UTC) TP-DXing session was attempted (while the other, more
sensible, DXers were sound asleep).

With the primary mission of testing out the TP-DXing performance
difference between a stock Tecsun PL-380 model and a modified PL-380 (with
upgraded
Litz wire on the stock ferrite bar, requiring only $5 of 40/44 wire), a
search was made at 0930 for any TP's strong enough to be received by a
barefoot Ultralight-- that is, one without the most sensitive reputation.

The first search at 0930 was fruitless for TP results-- there was weak
audio on 594-JOAK, 747-JOIB, 774-JOUB and 972-HLCA, but nowhere near the strong
level required for reception on the barefoot PL-380. This level was
pretty rare even during the best of the mid-winter Night Owl TP sessions, and
appeared impossible at first check this morning. So I temporarily changed to
LW, and ran a quick LW test on the signal from 368-ZP [in which the
Stealth PL-380 (last 23 seconds) really smoked the stock PL-380 (first 17
seconds)]_http://www.mediafire.com/?2mtcymnqz5y_
(http://www.mediafire.com/?2mtcymnqz5y)

Anyway, a final check was made on the big gun TP frequencies around 1005
UTC. To my surprise, the signal from 594-JOAK was now booming in on the
modified ICF-2010, as well as the signals from 747-JOIB, 774-JOUB, 972-HLCA
and others. Some weird solar change must have occurred on the sun, suddenly
giving the TP's a turbo boost (or, maybe, lack of sleep was causing a
slight delusion :-) Before my luck changed, I grabbed the barefoot PL-380 and
recorded the signal of 594-JOAK as received by the midget stock loopstick
(first 20 seconds), then 594-JOAK's signal on the Stealth PL-380 (last 23
seconds). The booming signal of 594-JOAK on the modified ICF-2010 certainly
sounded a lot more anemic on the barefoot PL-380, but at least the relative
sensitivity test was a booming success :-)
_http://www.mediafire.com/?udjfydiciht_
(http://www.mediafire.com/?udjfydiciht)

After obtaining my test recording, TP signals fizzled out quickly around
1030 UTC, returning to their normal, night-long mediocre level. But it was
fun while it lasted.

73, Gary DeBock

I live in Boone, Iowa now, but my brother lives in Tucson, Arizona. I
spoke to him on the phone this afternoon and he told me that they had,
had the worst wind storm he had ever seen in Tucson. Several of his
neighbors had roofs damaged from just the wind.

I grew up there listening to KTKT from grade school thru high school.

A lot of folks that I later heard in California got their start on KTKT.

John Mac Flanagan, Chris Borden ( who later started a DJ school in the
Bay Area), Lou Waters (CNN), and others. It was a great radio station
in the 1950s and 1960s. Color Radio...If you don't want it heard on
KTKT newsdon't let it happen.

See: http://ktkt.homestead.com/

I grew up on KTKT and KOMA. KTKT had to go off at 1700 local when I was
young. But shortly there after KOMA (Yours truly Kah Oh Mmmm A) came
booming in.

Sadly, radio has never been the same.

Re: [IRCA] Arizona Stations Off

2010-01-22 Thread Dennis Gibson
Yes it is. They're getting out a lot better than I expected from that new site.
I image that the ground conductivity isn't great there. They put a really
decent signal into Santa Barbara during the day and gives KTNN a run for its
money at night. You can get a tour of its new site near Bakersfield here:

http://www.fybush.com/sites/2009/site-090501.html

Not long before they moved to the new site something weird happened. I can't
describe it but they had to have had both sites on at the same time.

They diplexed off KSBQ-1480 for quite awhile. The FCC dismissed their
application to do that but they did it anyway. Several generations of that
family have had radio stations and they pretty much did whatever they pleased
regardless of what the FCC said. I snapped a few photos of that diplex setup
(and a few other towers):

http://www.flickr.com/photos/dcgibson55/sets/72157621773577091/show

KGDP was dark for quite awhile. They hadn't been on from their new site very
long before the money ran out and they pulled the plug. They just barely got
the site built before their CP was going to expire. I remember hearing them
their first day on from Santa Maria, which was July 4, 1988. They asked for
phone calls to see how far away they were being received.

I took a couple of photos of their original site, which they were kicked out of
for not paying the rent. Didn't you ask me to photograph that site? They moved
to another site before KSBQ without asking if that was OK.

2010-01-22 Thread Dennis Gibson
They have authority for 850 watts at night. Normally I'd check that on the FCC
web site but they're back into a weird problem they've had trouble with before.
Most stations show up as 0 watts.

[IRCA] Glenn Hauser, OK, MW logs, Jan 21-22 in UT

2010-01-22 Thread Glenn Hauser
Some people have been wondering about my getting WNAX-570 South Dakota in the
daytime here in Enid OK. Is it skywave, especially in midwinter? NO. I get it
all the time, month-in and month-out, QRN level permitting. It is always under
much stronger KLIF Dallas, and not really listenable, and with a slow SAH.
(Calculated at 3.4 Hz on Jan 22)

Last time I was in OKC at midday, Jan 15, I checked on the caradio, and WNAX
was still audible there, despite stronger signal from KLIF than in Enid, of
course. Approximate distance Yankton-OKC is only 400 miles, not as far as you
might think, since there is nowhere closer in SD than Yankton in the SE tip,
and the path is across our high-ground-conductivity Great Plains.

I would love to try for further KFYR-550 Bismarck ND, which also has a
tremendous coverage area; if only KFRM in Kansas would go away (Glenn Hauser,
OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UT Logs afternoon of Jan 21 on caradio as I was driving around or parked at
various Enid spots:

1540 at 2042, ``ESPN Deportes Radio, 15-40 AM`` IDs more than once, with the
``ESPN`` letters pronounced as in English, no doubt mandated by management.
Promo for station ad sales with 214 AC soon gave away the source. Fortunately
The Dallas Metroplex has three overlain area codes so they have to give
10-digit phonumbers.

This was atop the channel, probably KXEL skywave underneath. Amid SS, inserted
a Selective Service System PSA in English, seemed aimed at guest aliens about
the need to register. Never heard call-letter ID, but NRC AM Log 2009-2010
shows it as KZMP, COL University Park, 32 kW in daytime, U4 antenna.

FCC AM Query shows a neat 3-lobe pattern, with peaks at 90, 190 and 285
degrees; nulls at 145, 230 and 355 (rounded off, measured only every 5
degrees). We are somewhere around 345-350 degrees, so suspect the pattern was
out of whack to be putting such a dominant signal in here, and certainly
skywave, not groundwave.

See http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/amq?list=0facid=63551

Even stranger, FCC lists night power as 0.0 kW, yet includes all the antenna
parameters, a similar but different pattern with 5 lobes, the major one due
east. But on the pattern plot, power shows as 750 watts night, matching NRC AM
Log info.

Meanwhile, Metroplex Spanish on 1440 was inbooming, in fact far stronger than
OKC`s 1460 KZUE groundwave. No wonder, as KTNO is now 50 kW in daytime on what
was once a 10-kW regional channel.

25+ hours after 1440 was dominated by KTNO, Spanish from The Metroplex, tried
again on caradio Jan 22 at 2200 UT and immediately heard ID for WGEM in Quincy
IL. Now there`s a heritage call which has managed to survive; I think I picked
up their TV channel 10 in the 1960s long before I heard the AM. But it`s no
full service radio, now just another ESPN affiliate per NRC AM Log listing. By
2206 Spanish music from KTNO was atop.

I wonder how 1540`s KZMP calls possibly correlate with a Spanish slogan, or
with ESPN. Or are they just random? ``Zumbido más potente``? But there is no
hum, hmmm.

Also wonder how the network ESPN could come up with a Spanish or English slogan
to match the letters, which long ago became a meaningless corporate initialism,
rather than Entertainment and Sports Programming Network, as was the original
cable TV channel (I think). How about

``Extremely Silly Passion Network``
``Estúpidos Son Para Nosotros``
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

1060, Jan 21 at 2054 UT, financial talk about derivatives, ``Off the Wall
Street Radio Network`` --- not sure if that was a joke? No, googled this about
Phil`s Gang Radio Show, and the time matches 20-21 UT:
http://chataboutit.com/about/phils-gang-radio-show/
Apparently that ``network`` applies only to this one show, like EIB.

But whence on 1060? Retuned after hourtop at 2105, ad mentioned ``here in
Boulder``, then ``AM 1060 and 1580, Business Radio`` in Colorado. So it`s KRCN,
COL Longmont, 50 kW in daytime. 1580 refers to Colorado Springs; NRC AM
Log shows them both as ``The Big Money Station``, not a slogan I heard. 1060
was so steady for so long that I was wondering if I had a new semi-close
station by groundwave, normally vacant in daytime, but no, this was skywave
(Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

1220, South Asian music dominating the channel, Jan 21 at 2124, in fact
classical sitar music, nice! 2130 switched to vocal S Asian music. Only problem
a bit of splash from semi-local WBBZ 1230 Ponca City OK.

Lots of music, lacking ads or other announcements, even at drivetime! Should
also make it a good companion if it streams. Finally at 2139 gave phone number
972-243-8411, i.e. Dallas. 2200 kept playing music past hourtop, a song with
instrumental accompaniment including bagpipes. 2204 dead air as I had to tune
away, but still there at 2225 check.

Uplooked later in NRC AM Log, this is KZEE, COL Weatherford TX, Asian ethnic as
``Hot Pepper 1220`` and ``South Asian Radio`` with only

downhill.
