Re: [IRCA] Sunset DX during June

My-our-best SSS catch was with George Sherman and Carl Lubker-RIP at
Carl's house using a his Halicrafter and a 500ft wire running west was
1110 Roseville CA at that point was just after their SS and George was
able to understand enough mexican to ID i them! That SSS skip was a
fantastic opening w/the most catch was 930 KROE Sheridan WY in w/a true
local signal. Even w/the wire off they still dom the channel. This was
in Nov 1990. George would know the dates better. Carl died not too long
after this. 73 de FTS in Woodbury MN

I heard this station in 1959, from NJ, when they were on 1570.

They had stayed on the air an hour past scheduled signoff to
carry, in overtime, a National League playoff baseball game. Their ID
came

through a break in audio from a much stronger CFOR 1570 in
Orillia Ontario. For a long time I considered it to be my

I have wonderd about that too. Local 1440 for years has switched to non

At local sunrise is when they went up to 5kw. I do not understand that

That's very interesting because when I started my radio career as the
all-night jock on WQAM-560 Miami (then a rocker) several centuries ago,
we kicked up to our daytime 5kw at 4am (WQAM is 5000/1000
non-directional). Thanks to that, we had quite a few listeners deep
into the Caribbean. I may be wrong but I think the DA-2 stations such
as WIOD-610 still had to wait until local sunrise to switch.

Bob,

Thanks for the recap of your catch of KMCD-1570-Fairfield IA. Nice
catch indeed from the east coast. It also pointed out another senior
moment I had while typing these logs. Yes, I heard KMCD on 1570 not
1580. KWNT Davenport was on 1580. I believe KMCD eventually went off
the air permanently didn't they? Fairfield is a town/village of 4-8
thousand people. Tough on not getting a QSL.

[IRCA] Antenna patterns change

2010-04-15 Thread Patrick Martin
Hi Everyone,

Last night I reconnected the ground rods to the end of the beverage.
Eastern cx last night were terrible here, so I could not compare
signals. KSTP was very poor and even KOA wasn't too hot. But today, in
comparing daytime signals. I find signals to ESE to be stronger with the
ground connected. This probably explains why with the ground connected,
I don't hear the LW TAs on the beverage. Back in the 80s, I had a good
lobe into Eastern Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, into Central Florida quite
often. Infact WXVI 1600 AL was a regular most nights. Then I had to
raise my beverage, so the farm equipment could pass through in about
2003. At the time I also disconnected the ground at the end. The
beverage never did as well. I blamed it on raising the antenna. I am
sure that had an effect, but it is interesting to note on groundwave
daytime, the lobe is more to the ESE with the ground connected. KSL 1160
at 1500 EDT is S7 and I know earlier in the week, it wasn't that strong.
Portland's 50KWers are a bit stronger too. I remote switch at the far
end to disconnect the ground rods could be an interesting test. One
other thing that may also affect it, is the ground rods are 30 feet to
the West of the end, so in connecting the rods back up, the beverage is
30 feet shorter. That also may have some effect. I think since TA's are
not going to return until next Fall (If they do), I'll will leave the
ground connected and see what is heard. I may have my lobe back towards
the SE part of the US. I really have missed it too.

Very interesting Kaz! I'll have to go back over my California logs

everytime I tried at sunset in June & July and sky wave signals
didn't even start coming in until almost 2030 which was the time No.
Calif. dropped power. I remember trying for stuff to the north with
little luck. Thanks for checking in.

In my experience dxing from Northern California 1957-2010 I have
found summer sunset dx, especially in June to be almost useless. I
think I only have a handful of decent summertime sunset catches to
show. I remember barely pulling in Eugene on 1050 from Sacramento
once or twice but not much else. I was browsing through my
vacation catches 1979-1984 from NW Iowa, where a lot of my
listening was at sunset. Amazingly I

was able to log these stations between 2000-2400 in June 1984.
Sunset time at Galva was 2100..

Re: [IRCA] Re IRCA 72-28-6 / Sunset DX in June

2010-04-15 Thread Donald K. Kaskey
I've taken all that into account Bill. Unfortunately in the month of
June I very rarely find any kind of skywave until way after our local
sunset---2030. So, I've gotten very few northerly catches and believe
me I need a bunch up your way. It gets better by late July and August
is a pretty decent sunset month leading up to the two best--September &
October.

I heard this station in 1959, from NJ, when they were on 1570.

They had stayed on the air an hour past scheduled signoff to
carry, in overtime, a National League playoff baseball game. Their ID came
through a break in audio from a much stronger CFOR 1570 in
Orillia Ontario. For a long time I considered it to be my
alltime best sunset catch. Several efforts to get a verification
all failed. (Gee, an hour late sign off? Who knew? hi)

[IRCA] TP for 15 Apr from Victoria, BC

2010-04-15 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
A very sluggish morning, at least in the 1250 to 1315UT time period.I could
barely dig out a little talk on 612 using preamplification, otherwise, just
carriers this morning, mostly DU, with the occasional SAH on channels like 774,
hinting that there might be an Asian or two lurking. Speculative DX at its
finest.

best wishes,

Nick

Re: [IRCA] [ABDX] Sunset DX during June

2010-04-15 Thread Donald K. Kaskey

Nick,

I always thought I'd have a good shot at northerly stations in June but
I just have dead sky wave most of the times I tried. I looked back over
my logs going all the way back to 1957. June was an almost total
bummer. In 69 & 76 I did add a couple stations in June at SSS but most
years were duds. July however was much better and August started to get
some great SSS skywave leading up to Sep & Nov.

My logs from the midwest 1979-84 where I dxed mostly at sunset show that
the heartland is a super place for a domestic dxer at sunset.

Very interesting Kaz! I'll have to go back over my California logs to see if I
know what I'm talking about. My memory tells me that everytime I tried at sunset
in June & July and sky wave signals didn't even start coming in until almost
2030 which was the time No. Calif. dropped power.

The DX gods may not be kind to the San Francisco DXer, Don. Although I don't
do much domestic DX, the first time I heard Whitehorse on 570 was in June, and
it does seem that northerly stations might have a bit of an edge down here near
the US border, at least once sunset finally arrives there.
