[IRCA] Brier, WA TP's for 11/4/10

2010-11-05 Thread k7wv

Mediocre morning until I checked the 1435Z recording. Wow, now that's dawn
enhancement! China all over the place and Russia too. JA's were mostly big guns
only. Mayak on 666 and CNR-1 on 1593 new ones for the log. I may be able to
pull more out after further listening to the 1-minute sample. Most of these
were totally absent or hets at 1400Z.
No Alaska noted however, and the LWBC Russians were well down from the past 4
or 5 mornings with 189 being best again this morning and 234 absent.

The following times sampled this morning: 1259Z, 1335Z, 1359Z, 1435Z for 1-3
minutes each using Perseus.

The following were heard in audio:

153 R. Rossii Komsomolsk (Russia) Poor 1435Z

2010-11-05 Thread Mauno Ritola
Interesting, checking yesterday's files here on the other side of the
northern hemisphere the top conditions to Asia were around 1200 and then
started to drop. In Lapland, 700 km north the top was around 1300:

Hello All,

In a pretty remarkable comeback, what had been a thoroughly mediocre
band prior to 1420 suddenly came to life with a strong sunrise enhancement
from 1425-1450, boosting several Asian mainland stations up to their best
audio of the Fall Season.
The listening session started of at 1300 with the TP big guns at
their usual anemic level, struggling to produce much audio through the noise
and domestic splatter. Unusually, there was no mid-session propagation dive
or boost, and the same collection of Asian regulars (594, 648, 657, 738,
747, 774, 972, 1134, 1566 and 1575) were still fading in and out with
lackluster signals right up until 1420. It appeared that another mediocre
late-season session was about to wrap up.
Suddenly, 972-HLCA faded in strongly at 1430, along with a pesky
Chinese co-channel. 738-BEL2 also rose up to be heard, with audio near its best
of the season. 639-CNR1 and 675-Vietnam soon followed, with the latter
having its strongest signal since September. Finally around 1350, the Chinese
YL speech from 936-Anhui provided that station's best signal of the season.
The Japanese NHK stations had a moderate signal boost during this period,
but it was nothing like the weird propagation surge from China.
Unfortunately it was necessary to wrap things up around 1455 when the Chinese
were
still strong, so there was no chance to check the other notable Mainland
frequencies like 756, 927, 945, 981, 1035, 1377 and 1593. Maybe one of the SDR
DXers also noticed the late-session China surge from 1430-1445, when
reviewing recordings from that period this morning? Even though nothing new or
rare was heard here, it was the best propagation from China for quite a while.

The following were heard on a C.Crane SWP Slider model (7.5
loopstick) and stock Tecsun PL-606 DSP model, inductively coupled to a 9'
sided PVC
tuned passive loop (in the back yard). A modified ICF-2010 (30 loopstick)
was used as an SSB spotting receiver:

[IRCA] Oklahoma TP's 11/5/10

2010-11-05 Thread Richard Allen
Listening at 1216-1311 UTC, I found TP signals were improved here this morning.
 Carrier signals were noted on 558, 648, 693, 702, 738, 828, 891, 972, 1134 and
1242. The hets on 828 and 972 were very strong at sunrise (1257 UTC). JOIB
747 and JOUB 774 were heard with Basic English lessons, sometimes at fair
strength.

Receiver: Tecsun PL-310 with 7.5-inch loopstick.

2010-11-05 Thread Steve Ratzlaff
Quite unusual for Far East LWBC this morning. 209 Mongolia poor at the
start, 1239 utc. 189 Rossii solid S9 level, 180 S5 level, same time. Hardly
anything for 171; 153, 234, 279 poor to weak. Later at 1255 153 now S6 and
189 still S9. 209 still poor but fading rapidly after that. But at the end
of the session, 164 Mongolia was now present at poor level, 1429 utc. I
can't remember hearing Mongolia that late before. All Rossii freqs poor or
gone by then. Didn't check MW earlier, but still lots of hets; 891 with a
mix of DU and Asian, 1432 utc. 1566 and 1575 both poor.

1725 PNG beacon GA very poor; traces of 1737 KUT, 1441 utc.

Listened from 1305-1405 utc and conditions was better than it has been for a
long time. Not much was heard at first but I got a good sunrise enhancement
around 1347 utc. Its been many days with no enhancment at sunrise so it was
nice to hear it. Many carriers were heard with audio on 279, 594, 693, 747,

[IRCA] KVI-570 format change

2010-11-05 Thread Bruce Portzer

KVI will drop conservative talk in favor of oldies on Monday.

The change was announced on sister station KOMO's website a few days ago:

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/106489348.html

It seems like an unusual move.  Not many AM stations have music formats these
days, and conservative talk is still a popular.  On the other hand, KVI's
ratings have been in a bit of a decline lately, starting a few years ago when
Rush Limbaugh moved to KTTH-770.

It will be interesting to see how the change works out.  Oldies formats can be
reallly good or reallly bad depending on how they're put together.

From a DXing perspective, it'll probably mean more splatter for the TP's on 567
and 575.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-5

2010-11-05 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

Asian big gun propagation this morning was pretty solid, although
there certainly were no late-session Chinese fireworks like yesterday. A far
more moderate sunrise enhancement seemed to boost the Japanese signals
instead (with 594-JOAK very strong right up to the 1500 TOH), while
yesterday's vibrant Chinese signals were long gone.
The band gradually improved after a dreary start at 1300, with most
powerhouse TP's managing occasional decent audio by 1330. The Korean
religious broadcaster 1566-HLAZ rose up with strong Japanese audio at 1337 for
its
best signal since September, while the Radio English lessons on 747 and
828 were vibrant at about the same time. There was no typical mid-session
propagation swoon, although second-tier TP's seemed to be missing in action
until 558-HLQH came in with decent Korean music at 1427, fading in to its
strongest level of the season. The 558 kHz action continued well into sunrise
enhancement, with JOQR apparently joining HLQH for a rare TP mix on the
frequency at 1443. The Japanese big guns got a modest boost during this
period, but in a reversal of yesterday's late-session results, all the Chinese
were way down in the noise by 1445. All Asians except for an unusually
strong 594-JOAK were gone by 1500, but that weird station managed its best
audio of the entire morning (and the strongest Asian signal of the DXing
session) right at 1459, during the NHK1 weather report. In summary, the Asian
propagation really wasn't bad this morning, but after yesterday's late-session
excitement, it probably fell far short of what we would have preferred.

[IRCA] MW DX from Enid OK, November 5, 2010

2010-11-05 Thread Glenn Hauser
All times and dates strictly UT. MW log editors are welcome to excerpt items,
reformat and change to favorite timezone if necessary. Rx: mostly DX-398 with
internal antenna only; some caradio as specified; above 2 MHz on FRG-7 with
110-foot east-west longwire.

** OKLAHOMA. 1640, KFXY Enid, I avoid not only because it blox three
frequencies in the daytime, at least one at night, but because it`s nothing but
gospel music and stupid ballgames; however, as I tuned across Nov 5 at 1253 UT,
there was local news, including a week-old story about the latest sting of
convenience store clerx arrested for selling beer to minors, a recurring
problem here; soon outroed as ``CTB News in Ninety``, i.e. Chisholm Trail
Broadcasting (also KCRC 1390), stix in a sesquiminute of edited local news (or
olds) headlines here and there (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 720, since I was still monitoring at 1415 UT Nov 5, a check to see if
I can hear KDWN Las Vegas popping on at the proper November time for
day-pattern switch: no, not yet (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1290, Nov 5 at 1359 UT I hear an ad for Four Corners Siding, and a
307-AC phone number more than once, but fades for ID; ~4 Hz SAH with something,
probably our daytime dominator KWFS Wichita Falls.

So it has to be in AZ, NM, CO or UT, right? The only 1290 in those states is in
faraway Tucson. And no, 307 is Wyoming! So KOWB Laramie, as in Cowboy altho NRC
shows its current format as news/talk/sports. And Google confirms there is a
Four Corners Siding in Laramie, as well as Cheyenne (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1300, Nov 5 at 1400 UT, ad for McCook, then Open Line with Rich
Barnett; so KBRL in Nebraska now definitely logged (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1330, Nov 5 at 1401 UT, AP Radio News, in null of KNSS Wichita,
including Conan O`Brien starts Monday night on TBS. Optional cutaway at 1402:30
is taken by this station, enough news, already! Advanced timecheck for 3 after
9, ad for Veteran`s Day performances Sat Nov 13 7 pm, Sunday Nov 14 10:50 am at
First Baptist Church, Monahans; 1404, it`s 9:04 at KCKM, then weatherfemale
from Channel 9 [KWES Midland, really RF9, no longer COL Monahans]. Signal is
now peaking, and it`s the one which has to be nulled in order to hear KNSS.
KCKM Monahans TX, 5 kW, with CP for 12 kW to bother KNSS even more. Calls
derive from KCKN 1020 Roswell NM, of which KCKM is a subsidiary relaying it
part time (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1550, Nov 5 at 1251 UT as I was tuning across, heard ``New Mexico
Talk Radio`` slogan and call sounded like KMBA, but it`s really KIVA as per NRC
AM Log. Was atop lots of other signals on the FRG-7, with the usual SW antenna,
E-W longwire. I shall not believe this was on night power of 27 watts instead
of day power of 1. NRC does not show KIVA as having a PSRA, altho November
sunrise in Albuquerque is not until 1345 UT, as we well know when KKOB 770
switches to day pattern audiblizing itself eastward.

The calls KIVA have been all over the place in past years, seldom pertaining to
a real Indian station. FCC callsign history shows 1550 has been KIVA since
05/18/2009, before that KQNM, and down the list KQEO. When I was living in
Albuquerque, there was no local on 1550, so apparently the earlier calls
applied to 920. Yes, history for present KSVA 920 shows before 01/23/1995 it
was KQEO (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

both for the first time this season. Snippets of audio on 1215, 1413
and 1458 also. Might be a night for you guys on the coast to have a listen.

Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-4

2010-11-05 Thread D1028Gary
Hello Mauno,

Thanks for sharing the Asian propagation results yesterday morning from
your location, and from Lapland. Thanks also for sharing the interesting link.

Our 1430-1500 sunrise enhancement propagation from China yesterday was very
unusual for this Fall Season, which generally has not lived up to DXing
expectations here (on the North American west coast). With Nick, Tom and I
all noticing the same great signal boost from China, it was quite an
exciting morning, especially in comparison to the mediocre TP signals
prevalent in
late October.

  Hello All,

In a pretty remarkable comeback, what had been a thoroughly
mediocre
band prior to 1420 suddenly came to life with a strong sunrise
enhancement
from 1425-1450, boosting several Asian mainland stations up to their
best
 audio of the Fall Season.
The listening session started of at 1300 with the TP big guns at
their usual anemic level, struggling to produce much audio through the
noise
and domestic splatter. Unusually, there was no mid-session propagation
dive
or boost, and the same collection of Asian regulars (594, 648, 657, 738,
 747, 774, 972, 1134, 1566 and 1575) were still fading in and out with
lackluster signals right up until 1420. It appeared that another m
ediocre
late-season session was about to wrap up.
Suddenly, 972-HLCA faded in strongly at 1430, along with a pesky
Chinese co-channel. 738-BEL2 also rose up to be heard, with audio near
its best
of the season. 639-CNR1 and 675-Vietnam soon followed, with the latter
having its strongest signal since September. Finally around 1350, the
Chinese
YL speech from 936-Anhui provided that station's best signal of the
season.
The Japanese NHK stations had a moderate signal boost during this
period,
but it was nothing like the weird propagation surge from China.
Unfortunately it was necessary to wrap things up around 1455 when the
Chinese were
still strong, so there was no chance to check the other notable Mainland
 frequencies like 756, 927, 945, 981, 1035, 1377 and 1593. Maybe one of
the SDR
DXers also noticed the late-session China surge from 1430-1445, when
reviewing recordings from that period this morning? Even though nothing
new or
rare was heard here, it was the best propagation from China for quite a
 while.

The following were heard on a C.Crane SWP Slider model (7.5
loopstick) and stock Tecsun PL-606 DSP model, inductively coupled to a
9' sided PVC
tuned passive loop (in the back yard). A modified ICF-2010 (30
loopstick)
was used as an SSB spotting receiver:

Re: [IRCA] KVI-570 format change

2010-11-05 Thread Patrick Martin
From a DXing perspective, it'll probably mean more splatter for the
TP's on 567 and 575.

I am sure it will and TA's to the NE on 567 576 will suffer too, if we
get them.

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 5 Nov 2010

2010-11-05 Thread Nigel Pimblett
As Richard and Bill observed, a much better morning today. Japan was
doing especially well here, with audio noted on
567,594,666,693,747,774,828,873,1071 and 1287.
Also reaching audio was China (945, 981,1206), Russia (648), and South
Korea (972, 1566). A few unIDs also (1098,1143,1161,1476), mostly just
with traces of audio. On 1476 I'm pretty sure it was Chinese, and with
a bit of a multi-transmitter echo. Certainly one of the more
interesting mornings of late.
