[IRCA] TP for 13 Nov from Victoria, BC.
Tuned in at 1445UT this morning to find a fairly lively band already, so was looking forward to a nice bit of further enhancement after 1500, but no, not really, just sort of gently started to fade away, with occasional temporary fades up to good strength.I also found that there were quite a number of good carriers with no real audio, perhaps there was more local noise than usual, but the splatter seemed lively also. Still, quite a lot of audio noted as well, considerably better than yesterday, so no complaints. And, JOUB might have been the strongest heard this season. pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least briefly): 594 JOAK, but not always; some deep fades 774 JOUB really strong; beyond this category and nearly into the land of the semi-local...at least for a little while about 1450UT 828 JOBB at 1445, with something else underneath 972 HLCA becoming stronger past 1500UT 1566 HLAZ reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise): 567 JOIK much better than //594 at 1448UT, something else underneath 702 NHK2 //774 at 1450UT 747 JOIB 837 JJ talk not //594, but from 1455 many NHK1 have local news and weather etc., so likely JOQK 873 JOGB //828, but trading places with singing from N. [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-13
Hello All, Asian propagation this morning rebounded very nicely from yesterday's mediocre results, providing TP signals that were pretty vibrant-- especially in consideration of the elevated solar indexes. As such, results here were much closer to Steve's positive version. Both "big gun" and second-tier Asians sounded very healthy around 1400, and it was a scramble to check them all during sunrise enhancement. Both 828-JOBB and 972-HLCA had their best signals of the season, as did 738-HLKG. 585-JOPG was unusually strong, along with 675-VOV and 756-CNR1. The Chinese lineup on 918, 927, 936 and 945 all were in audio at some time this morning, along with the Asian regulars on 603, 648, 657 and 666. A mystery co-channel on 639 was briefly dominant over CNR1 around 1455 (not // 594 or 1134), but co-channels on 972 and 1377 seemed to get lost in the "big gun" audio. Overall conditions were very favorable, but other than the 639 UnID no new or rare Asian stations were heard. Sick-sounding transmitters were back with a vengeance, though-- 738-BEL2's throbbing hum seemed to consume most of its modulation at times, and 657-Pyongyang's high-frequency audio seems to be missing. In relation to this, about the only surprising reception this morning was apparently hearing the infamous Pyongyang tirade-yelling OM and YL team on a vibrant 648-VOR at 1505 during the Korean program, with their distinctive rapid-fire shouted Korean. Hopefully this was just an aberration, and not an indication that this very noxious programming is really part of a new 648-VOR schedule. The following were heard on a C.Crane SWP Slider model (7.5" loopstick) inductively coupled to a 9' sided PVC tuned passive loop (in the back yard). [IRCA] The expanded band turns 15
15 years ago tonight, at 8:20pm EST, Niel Wolfish in Toronto heard a test ID from WJDM-1660 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. DXers in the Eastern and Central time zones had been noting tone and music testing since October 10, but this was the first report of a voice ID. Regular sked would begin on December 8. I heard them for the first time on December 14. I enjoyed making several long-haul catches from Out West the first few years of the expanded band, before the frequencies filled up. Western DXers were hearing states such as New Jersey and Florida, some for the first time. All in all, though, the dreams many of us had for the X-band failed to materialize. Based on what I'd read about band conditions in past decades, I was halfway anticipating that if there were, say, three stations on a frequency, each with 1kw, they'd be constantly fading in and out with each other, the far ones mixing with the near. No real dominant, just like a remarkably uncluttered graveyard channel. In reality, the one or two nearest stations are L&C, and the ones on the other side of the continent are never heard. At least, that's the way it's been for me! [IRCA] DX Log
After stopping at work real quick about 4:30pm, I told my roommate "Im going to sit in the car for a bit and see what I can pick up" to which he replied, "It's too early, you won't hear anything yet". I told him, "Sunset is only an hour away, I'll get something" About 4:35 pm, I stopped the dial on 1360 AM because I was getting a fairly strong and very intelligible signal in the middle of a commercial break. I heard mentions of an Auto Restoration Service In Walker County, after the spot, a liner said "Classic Country 1360 WIXI" followed by mentions of the Auburn ISP Sports Network-NEW LOG! 12KW Non Directional! Shortly after I heard WIXI, I was tuning through the 1500khz region of the dial. I heard mentions of Oklahoma Sooners playing Texas Tech on both 1520khz and 1560khz which turns out to be KOKC Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and KGOW Belaire/Houston, TX. Neither signal was terribly clear, but both were intelligble enough to make out what was being said. KGOW is a new logo, I have never heard them before! About 4:55 I had my radio tuned to 1680kHz, heard "Lean on me" followed by another Urban Old School type hit, then a liner, "Music that makes you feel good all over again, Ol' School 1680 AM". [IRCA] 3 Day Weekend from Signal Hill, Newfoundland
Hello Everyone, Looks like decent weather for the weekend here in Newfoundland. I'm planning on Dxing with the Ultralight Radio once again from high above the Atlantic Ocean at Ladie's Lookout on Signal Hill possibly for each of the next three days at some point, maybe an early morning session along with a couple sessions at around sunset times. I've already completed one trek and session earlier today at sunset with quite a few loggings. An entire summary of stations heard over the 3 day's sessions will follow Good DX to All and have a Great Weekend Allen Willie St. John's, Newfoundland ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] NE Oregon TPs, Saturday
A very unusual morning; for awhile just about every TP channel up to 1300 kHz had audio. The Japan main stations were very strong and were playing Handel's Alleluia Chorus from The Messiah, and I could finally confirm getting them just by tuning across and checking for that familiar music! (Being very Asian-language-recognition-challenged.) 774 the best with solid 8-9 level, like a local station. This started around 1420 utc, lasting to 1440. Still hearing Asian audio on 891 at 1520 utc, earlier there were 3 stations mixing. LWBC Radio Rossii doing better today, though I haven't heard anything on 171 for a week or more. 73, Steve NE Oregon R75, longwires ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] Arizona TP's for 11-13-10
Listened from 1305-1405 utc and at first not much was heard but around 1345 utc things changed big time. For around 7 minutes I had the best TP DX this year with audio on: 279, 558, 567, 666, 693, 747, 774, 828, 972, 1197, 1206 and 1566. Many carriers were heard and some came close to audio. With WDDZ-550 in RI off, I have used that opportunity to record from the site using the towers. SDR-14 is the receiver. Audio is available 24/7 from a Shoutcast server stream at my office. Current files at: http://www.chowdanet.com/550files/ They are recorded using the two tower directional array. That nulls down some locals. This is the last night for that. I will record for a few nights using the non-directional tower. It is helpful to record just what stations are the main night interference for 550 in this area. This will be continued until some time next week. It's kind of a reverse DX test... [IRCA] LEM295 DXpedition report from Finland published
Here's a follow-up to the Aihkiniemi DXpedition report published a couple of days ago: The second leg of our two-part DXpedition (first in Aihkiniemi, then in Lemmenjoki) began in a very sad way; our landlady Kristiina Jomppanen had passed away just two days earlier at the age of 90. Her sons reassured us that we would nevertheless be most welcome, and that they will be happy to host DXers also in the future. DXing didn't offer much consolation. Solar weather was unfavorable, and conditions began to improve only just before we had to leave. Still, quite a few nice new stations caught - and plenty of time for photography! [IRCA] 1060 KYW PA back on (WQMV TN heard)
KYW back on at 0350 EDT. Had an "AM 1060 WQMV" ID for a very brief reception of Waverley TN and a new catch here. Listed as 1000 day, four watts night. This was also probably the same station running oldies just moments before KYW came back. Radio Educacion in Mex City was huge, way better than its SW 6185 parallel. [IRCA] 1060 KYW PA off + 770 + WLW IBOC gone
KYW seems off. Eduucation in Mex City dominant (had Cuban jazz a few minutes ago) and the Catholic station in MA coming in second. There was someone with ABC news just after 0300 but faded. 770 had WAIS ID just before midnight. In Buchtel OH. 690 is in the clear, has been all of past few days. Mexico City, El Paso TX, Gravelbourg SA and Cuba Progresso among dominant stations. This is worth monitoring in case WLW's IBOC returns.
