[IRCA] Hawaiian report for Sunday Nov 28, 2010

2010-11-28 Thread WALTER SALMANIW
Finally got around to leaving the lanai and heading down to the beach to escape
the noise, although our complex is relatively quiet here in Kauai, Hawaii.
We're spending 10 days in Poi'pu at the Outrigger Plantation complex on the
south shore of the island.  My first time to Kauai, and it truly is a gem
(previously I've DX'd from Maui on many occasions and from Honolulu as well).
Conditions don't seem to be all that great, but there were a few surprises.
Tonight I listened between 06:00 to 07:15 UTC.  Nothing at all from Alaska
(which I've heard well on other visits in the past), nor Japan.  Pacific
Islands propagate fairly, with RFO Tahiti quite good on 738.  I didn't hear
1017 Tonga tonight, but it's been present on other evenings at fair level.
1098 continues with a weak modulation.  A couple of nights again 1386 Radio
Tarana from New Zealand was coming in very well, but not so so far tonight.
Here's a quick list of what was heard sitting on the beach with my WRTH in
hand, a headlamp, and my highly modified eton e100 ultralight with the longer
ferrite rod (tuneable), and a good pair of noise-canceling headphones:

530  Most likely Radio Encyclopedia at poor/fair level with non-stop music and
no TOH ID at 07:00.
540 CBK, Watrous SK with CBC ID at 06:58 at fair/good level.
580:  Presumably KMJ, Fresno CA at good level IDing as the Bulldogs sports
Network brought to you by Wendy's, etc.  Mentions of California.  07:02.
600:  KOGO, San Diego with ID at 06:10 and weather forecast.  Travel advisory
due to snow warnings, then into Coast to Coast.  Good reception.
640:  Coast to coast presumably KFI at 06:12, with het from 639, likely Fiji.
670:  prob. KBOI, Boise ID with CBC news at 07:05 and Home Depot ad.  Good
reception.
780:  Presumed KKOH, Reno NV  with Coast to Coast at fair/good level at 06:19
880:  Seems that KHCM, Honolulu is off the air.  There's an open carrier there
with blips every two to three seconds.  Heard the same for the past several
nights.  Weak cochannel, probably KIXI, Seattle at same time (c 06:25).
950:  Radio Reloj, Havana.  My surprise for the evening with SS talk, with the
time pips in the background.  ID at 06:30 with TC at poor/fair level.
1020  KTNQ, with SS talk at strong level
1060:  CKMX Calgary, AB.  Nice ID at 07:09 as Your Classic Country, AM 1060.
Fair/good.  Regularly heard each night monitored.
1070:  KNX, Los Angeles with snowfall warning at higher elevations.  Mentions
of Orange County, etc.  Fair /good level at 06:40.
1090:  ?KPTK Seattle with talk program at fair level.  Het from 1089 noted.
1098:  Low modulation, as always talk at 06:43, but too low to make anything
out, despite a decent signal.
1100:  KFAX, San Francisco with religious talk at good level.
1150:  Fair reception with sports, possibly KTLK, Los Angeles, with cochannel
SS ?KLPM, Portland?
1410:  CFUN, Vancouver with ESPN Radio and The Fan IDs at 06:55 at good level.

Overall, a fun night, but without very outstanding reception.

I noticed that last week at Burnt River ON. So it's within my reach. I
won't

be back up there till mid-December so unable to check further. Perhaps WOC
in Iowa is a good place to start if we're talking about the same
off-frequency channel. This didn't last long - whatever it was faded.
Which
is why I doubt North Bay. I can't even remember what time it was. I could
of

course also be something south of us, Mexico, Cuba, etc...

2300 MST
Someone on 600 is (I think) a little low by ~200 Hz. E-N-E / W-S-W
direction. CJWW KSJB are in there as usual.

[IRCA] Hispanic station on 1665kHz

2010-11-28 Thread Gerald Wolczanski
So, to start this off, I constructed a tree-antenna in my back yard.
See:
http://w5jgv.com/tree_antenna/index.htm

Mine is not nearly so neat.

It resonates quite well in the AM band. My target band (NDB's) not so
well. The antenna is very high-Q and appears to be an excellent
performer. The tree is about 90' tall. I'm using a little homebrew
preamp across the capacitor (MPF102 and 2N3904).

I hear an AM station centered on 1665kHz playing Hispanic music. Is
this a pirate? I don't see any listings in the FCC database.

Thanks

Obviously, it's a pirate.. or someone horribly off frequency. 1665 is not an
FCC licensed or approved frequency.

Walt,

Sounds similar to what I heard when my wife, son and I were in Poi'pu a few
years ago. I won't say it was a long time ago, but as I recall, Canton Is. was
still on 1386. I think I spent more time beacon-chasing on LW than I did on MW.

As long as you are there, be sure to drop in to Lappert's and have some

[IRCA] Tecsun PL-606 DSP Receiver Review

2010-11-28 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

For those interested in the latest technological advances in AM-DXing
portables, a full 6-page review of the newest Ultralight radio sensation (the
compact PL-606 AM-FM-SW-LW receiver) has been uploaded to DXer.Ca (at
_http://www.dxer.ca/file-area/cat_view/87-ultra-light-radio-files-area/94-ultralight
-radios_
(http://www.dxer.ca/file-area/cat_view/87-ultra-light-radio-files-area/94-ultralight-radios)
, the first option), to the Ultralightdx Yahoo
group file site, and also to _http://www.mediafire.com/?gcu6zgyxb724cy2_
(http://www.mediafire.com/?gcu6zgyxb724cy2) .

Detailing Tecsun's successful effort to combine the class-leading 100 mm
loopstick (of the PL-310 model) with 1 kHz DSP selectivity in a very small
cabinet, the article includes many photos, information on PL-606 quirks and
advantages, and the results of a four-band competitive performance test
against the PL-380 and PL-310 models. At $39.95 (plus $20.00 shipping from Hong
Kong), this breakthrough Ultralight model may well be the best combination
yet of AM sensitivity, selectivity and portability.

[IRCA] Very good cx to NW again from IL

2010-11-28 Thread neilkaz
Still using the NW Phased BOG System and tomorrow will finish my Split Delta
Flag in the same direction to compare. I expect a more broadbanded back null
from the SDF, but that beamwidths from the PBS are clearly less than the 100
degrees calculated for the SDF. Anyhow, NW cx seemed to improve last night, but
tonight is better and with the star of the show being CFYM 1210 with Oldies and
calls and Classic Hits 1210 slogans sometimes atop KHAT (still running outta
spec at night methinks) with WPHT phased out. Tonight CFYM is about 60 seconds
ahead of //mx 1330 CJYM. When cx were even better (a bit stronger to MB/SK and
less close skip QRM) 8 days ago, CFYM mx was 30 sec behind !

Anyhow...all the usual MB/SK stuff strong, especially SK on 1190 which I noted
in at 1640 local when I hooked up antennas. 1220 from MB is also often blasting
loud. Team 1040 BC is sometimes = to WHO !!

Anyone needing OR and not have a local on 1130 should try tomorrow and Tues via
sunset skip from about 1830 to 1845 switch time PST. No wonder they complain at
News 1130 which incidently was noted in the mix at the extremely early time of
1730 CST. 1130 La Mexicana makes OR easy here. OR also presumed via SSS on 1080
and 1190 and also rlg on 700 after Spokane sports stn switched presumed KGRV
(very rare and couldn't keep it good enough to hold it for any sort of ID
chance).

A bit later on Chinese briefly atop 1320 presume BC, also rare. Team Sports
Network ment on 1410 under my local should be BC (not so rare) BC presumed
u/phased WLS sounded rlg as noted before on Sunday eves. W-1440 slogan on 1440
is AB, 2nd time ID'ed mixed with WROK (weak nights here) and ND and traces of
MN's Disney. W-1440 was playing rather rare (at least to my ears) oldies.

AB on 1140 faded in at 1715 atop WY's Real Country with WRVA phased. Over to
1060 and at 1717 CST and Classic Country 1060 from Calgary was mixed with KYW
phase null. Again early SSS fade in times, but spending much time on channels
where I need things from similar regions was fruitless. Oh well if you don't
try you don't get.

Re: Albertans that I hoped for and before that move to FM. 1310 has strong WIBA
to contend with and on 1370 ND was pounding in with rlg organ mx. On 1020 I can
phased KDKA, but KJJK Family Friendly Radio is not DXer friendly since they run
day power EVERY night. Oh well a couple more from AB would be nice but 1020
would be a long shot even with KJJK behaving.

None of these were new for me .. oh well .. 73 KAZ Barrington IL

[IRCA] not TP for 28 Nov from Victoria, BC.

2010-11-28 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Another ouch this morning. Dennis did the right thing by listening
earlier I think. Again, 828 was oddly the most consistent, with
reasonably readable audio after 1500, no s/off at 1520, but gone by
1550UT, though with a strong carrier still .

Closer to 1500 UT, 594 and 774 had snippets of audio, closer to
1550UT, 1566 and 1242 had bits of audio.

A strange and unsatisfying morning.

best wishes,

Nick

Re: [IRCA] [ABDX] KOMO-1000

2010-11-28 Thread neilkaz
Easy enough here in Barrington IL sometimes o/WMVP phase null but with big
fades. CX were considerably better earlier towards the NW. If those cx return,
KOMO should be easy to hear further east thru WMVP. To those needing KOMO, they
ID lots during news and breaks and the last time I checked they stream online.

For those of you who aren't on the dxtip list, Wayne Heinen posted that KOMO
appears to be on day pattern (non-DA) tonight, possibly until 0300 EST.

KOMO is quite audible here at the moment, but it's tough to get much
intelligible audio due to dominant WMVP and quite a bit of IBOC crud
(probably from WINS).

Not surprising. We had a little snow storm here earlier this past week (got
down to 16F) and KOMO didn't kick in to day pattern until 8:15am local.
