[IRCA] 1710 pirate again

2010-12-08 Thread Steve Ratzlaff
Just spent 45 minutes listening to the 1710 pirate, no sign of ident,
finally stopped recording--time for bed. Signal has little fading but not a
great signal, maybe 80-90% understanding it. Mostly plays 60's oldies with
occasional very short voice into the next song. Occasional humorous ads,
possibly old original ads. One that played several times about buying a GE
Superradio on eBay (since it's no longer being made) since that radio is
good for superior AM reception. Another humorous ad about a lady with very
large feet who needs to find mens's brown loafers in size 11 to fit her
feet.
Maybe eventually someone else will hear this and can give some more input
about where it might come from. Mid west or west coast, since little fading
on the signal? Best on my E/W longwire.

73,
Steve

2010-12-08 Thread vroomski

Steve,

Not hearing anything on 1710 here in Salmon Creek.
That oldies format sounds a lot better than the
programming on the radio stations that are in
this area. I have to tune 640 KFI and listen to
Bill Handle for stimulating radio. Maybe this oldies
station can plug my GE super radio when I place it
on eBay soon.

[IRCA] John Bryant's NRD-535D / Timewave DSP / Portable Case Receiver Setup on Ebay

2010-12-08 Thread Guy Atkins
Was I ever surprised today to see the late John Bryant's portable JRC
NRD-535D rackmount case setup for auction on Ebay. This project of
interconnected NRD-535D, twin Timewave DSP-9+ units, S-meter, and audio
switching network inside of a portable rackmount case was John's primary
DXpedition receiver before he got hooked on the Winradio SDR receivers. I
spent many hours on Grayland DXpeditions with John, sitting across from him
and this fine receiver and accessory setup:

http://cgi.ebay.com/JRC-NRD-535-D-Receiver-Timewave-DSP9-anvil-case-/270677363746

The Austin, Texas seller says he purchased the equipment at a radio auction,
but has decided not to keep it. I contacted the seller to let him know about
John Bryant and the background of this one-of-a-kind setup.

The receiver has a couple of Kiwa filter modules inside, and I am almost
certain it has *all *other Kiwa modifications for the NRD-535D, too. I
remember that John had spoken of sending it to Craig at Kiwa Electronics for
full house mods.

The white/translucent rectangles that can be seen stuck on the receiver's
main tuning knob are chunks of heavy duty, sticky-backed snap fastener
material. I'm sure these can be peeled off and the remaining goo cleaned
off satisfactorily. John used the fastener material to hold his spin wheel
attachment for easier tuning. I don't believe this flat plate with finger
hole (which extended beyond the tuning knob) is included with the auction.

[IRCA] SANGEAN DT-400W

2010-12-08 Thread Ira Elbert New III

So-o-o-o... it's my Birthday today and (Oh...don't worry about passing
along any Birthday greetings) I open up the present from my Wife, and it turns
out to be a SANGEAN DT-400W that she got from the folks over at AMAZON.COM. She
said it was in her cart, but she didn't put it there. Neither did I. I don't
know a lot about this radio, but she said she could easily send it back if I
don't want it. I haven't opened it up yet and I wanted some input before I do.
Is it worth keeping? I know that's open for debate, but I thought I would just
throw the question out there just like that. Should I have her send it back for
something similar? I already have a G8. Do I need something from TECSUN or the
like? I have no idea what she paid for it, so if there are any suggestions to
be had, please keep it in a similar price range.
Thanks for all of your help. I will now go back to enjoying what's left of
my 46th Birthday. Perhaps I'll take in Top Chef a little later on BRAVO...

[IRCA] more on 1710 pirate

2010-12-08 Thread Steve Ratzlaff
I got an email today from Michigan DXer Tim Tromp, who has heard the same
1710 pirate station I've been hearing the past couple of nights. He heard it
back in November and posted some audio clips at his blog at
http://midx.wordpress.com/2010/11/06/am-1710-the-big-q-oldies-heard-well-this-morning/
One of them is the same GE Superadio commercial that I heard last night.
He mentions Rob Ross in Ontario also heard this pirate in September.
Tim's audio clips are much better reception than I've heard--it would appear
this pirate is indeed located farther east.

Subject: [IRCA] SANGEAN DT-400W

So-o-o-o... it's my Birthday today and (Oh...don't worry about passing
along any Birthday greetings) I open up the present from my Wife, and it
turns out to be a SANGEAN DT-400W that she got from the folks over at
AMAZON.COM. She said it was in her cart, but she didn't put it there.
Neither did I. I don't know a lot about this radio, but she said she could
easily send it back if I don't want it. I haven't opened it up yet and I
wanted some input before I do. Is it worth keeping? I know that's open for
debate, but I thought I would just throw the question out there just like
that. Should I have her send it back for something similar? I already have
a G8. Do I need something from TECSUN or the like? I have no idea what she
paid for it, so if there are any suggestions to be had, please keep it in
a similar price range.
Thanks for all of your help. I will now go back to enjoying what's
left of my 46th Birthday. Perhaps I'll take in Top Chef a little later on
BRAVO...

[IRCA] Newfoundland Ultralight Trans-Atlantics Report December 8

2010-12-08 Thread Allen Willie
Hello To All

Trans-Atlantic signals this afternoon were decent once again as another DX
session was completed high above the Atlantic Ocean at Ladies Lookout on Signal
Hill, my sixth 6 mile (round trip) hike this month and 53rd overall this year
to the hill. The temperatures have been mild 8 to 11 Celcius and with no snow
at all on the ground, the walks are very enjoyable still.

Once again the Spanish stations seemed to be plentiful during this session. 4
new stations logged overall

Re: [IRCA] John Bryant's NRD-535D / Timewave DSP / Portable Case Receiver Setup on Ebay

2010-12-08 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Sigh! I remember Linda (John's wife) telling me that she didn't get very
much from an auction outfit for a lot of John's hobby equipment. Presumably
this fellow purchased it at auction, perhaps for a fraction of it's true
value. It's a shame that Linda didn't ask Guy (the master of wonderful eBay
auctions, which tend to do very well because of the great presentation!) to
host some of John's equipment. I'll follow it with interest! In recent
years, John's preferred rig was his WinRadio 313e. I don't think he used
this one much anymore.Walt Salmaniw, Victoria, BC

Was I ever surprised today to see the late John Bryant's portable JRC

interconnected NRD-535D, twin Timewave DSP-9+ units, S-meter, and audio
switching network inside of a portable rackmount case was John's primary
DXpedition receiver before he got hooked on the Winradio SDR receivers. I
spent many hours on Grayland DXpeditions with John, sitting across from him
and this fine receiver and accessory setup:

Turkey is almost invisible on MW with a much-reduced schedule. I think Iran
is more likely.

Re: [IRCA] more on 1710 pirate

2010-12-08 Thread Patrick Martin
Steve,

My gut feeling is one of those Boston area pirates. I heard one a couple
years back and e mailed the GM. I don't see why we cannot hear them on a
cear frequency, as back in the 80s I heard several East Coast TIS
stations running 10 watts and less.
