Re: [IRCA] Newfoundland Ultralight Radio Trans-Atlantics & DomesticsReport April 13-14
Allen, a longwire/beverage antenna or two will work well for you if you have lots of room. Just aim it in the direction you want to hear from and you should have very good results. At Cappahayden we have 1000 feet or more, one aimed at Brazil and the other aimed at Europe. You might also want to consider a Kaz antenna. Mine is rectangle about 100 feet long, with the lower course 8 feet above the ground (might need to be higher if Moose visit your land) and the upper course about 25 feet. I don't know if you have trees of that size, but guyed PVC poles could also work. Like the longwire, you aim it is the direction you want to go. Let us know if you need more detials. Jim Renfrew - Original Message - From: "Allen Willie" To: Sent: Thursday, April 14, 2011 9:44 AM Subject: [IRCA] Newfoundland Ultralight Radio Trans-Atlantics & DomesticsReport April 13-14 Hello To All Conditions last evening showed a slight increase in better propagation as the K Index lingered at 2 . Another strong performance from many Europeans. No new stations were added to the ULR log this night. After almost two weeks at this new location, a few observations are apparent regarding propagation and reception here. Of course, the 70 mile move away from the city has rendered a number of new stations heard ,some of which were drowned out by the powerful locals back in St. John’s The Bermuda outlet on 1160 has now been heard twice on ULR here . In 9 years in St. John’s , Bermuda had only been heard once or twice and that was using a larger size rig. Also the outlets heard from Romania this past while were almost non existent from the city. Overall with the practically RFI free environment , signals strengths of most stations have been markedly increased as well . The Trans-Atlantic signals also tend to stay in much later into the evening . Domestic stations from Canada and the United States are pretty well non-existant in numbers early on and then begin to appear towards the wee hours until dawn. We are looking forward to the upcoming summer season and planning to erect an antenna setup on the property for our much larger radio rigs. 549-ALGERIA-Alger Chaine 1 ,Les Trembles 00:06UT/14 man in Arabic talk (fair) 675-NETHERLANDS-R. Re: [IRCA] 30 years of DXing
Hi old friends and new, I've been reading the IRCA-online messages for several months now, and have been enjoying the posts about TP and LA DX especially. Bob Coomler's post brought back some memories, and I want to correct one name in it - it was Tom Colthurst, not Tom Seaver (I wish!). Add Randy Lee to the list too, he was my best friend for awhile in the early 60s. I started with station survey collecting in 1959, meeting Randy Lee at the Little League field where our brothers were playing baseball. I succumbed to the allure of Medium Wave DXing in 1962 and was able to hear many TPs, DUs and LAs from San Diego. I added TAs in 1964 in the fantastic sunspot minimum that year and was really hooked on foreign DXing. I joined NRC in 1962 and then IRCA soon after it started, and stayed a member of both until around 1990. Editing the DX Worldwide column for several years in the 1960s (maybe 1866-1968?) was fun, and learning about and then writing about medium wave propagation was an intellectual challenge. The listening ended when the R-390 and HQ-180 crapped out in the 1980s, when the girls were young, and I got hooked on genealogy research (and still am). I do scan the dial in the car occasionally while I'm waiting for someone to show up. My email address is rjsea...@cox.net if anyone wants to contact me and share memories. Linda and I are still in Chula Vista (south of San Diego), our two daughters are married with two children each, and life is pretty good. I retired after 35 years at Rohr in 2002, and do teaching, speaking and writing about genealogy topics to fill my time. I suspect that the other city was St. Cloud since Sauk Rapids and St. Cloud are almost contiguous. The WXYG pattern on the FCC site shows a distorted figure 8 E-W (more E than W) during the day and a blob south (which I bet KWMT loves) at night altho I suspect that their night time coverage is limited to St. Cloud because of our friend CBK. Re: [IRCA] 30 years or more of skywave Dxing (55 years of radio)
Here is my am dxing history. I first started dxing the am band back in 1965 at the age of 9. I had been familiar with shortwave listening as I had an uncle who introduced me to that side of the radio hobby previously. I remember at a very young age checking out all the cool stuff in his radio room. Some of the equipment was bigger than I was. Anyway going back to bcb dx, in 1965 my grandmother had a radio dating back to the 30's or 40's. I don't remember the make but it had absolutely fantastic audio. It was built in a wooden cabinet with a large speaker that took up most of the bottom part of the cabinet. It was a tube rig and took time to warm up. On that machine I heard all the standard powerhouse stations after the sun set. Some of the highlights over the years were hearing my first Caribbean stations, Radio Belize on 834, Caribbean Beacon on 1610, ZNS on 810 and 1540, Radio Sutatensa in Columbia on 810, Radio Americas on 1160 as well as the Cubans, PJB plus the usual domestics including KSL and KFI. I didn't hear my first tas until the mid 80's when I heard Tirana on 1395. It took me a decade more till I heard another ta. It was the powerhouse out of Norway on 1314. All this was done from locations in New Jersey with stock equipment. Along the way I got my amateur license in 1978. I hold the call N2AAM. My interest in radio led me to a career in broadcasting and broadcast station ownership. I joined the NRC back in the 90's. In retrospect I should have done it much earlier in my dx career but it was just one of those things. I have been active in various aspects of radio since the 60's and it still hasn't lost it's shine and excitement. Radio is still a box of magic. Not sure if this ever went out as it was not in my most recent Digest. SO, you may get two. :) Dave -Original Message- From: HASCALL, DAVID CIV DFAS Sent: Thursday, April 14, 2011 9:37 AM To: 'irca@hard-core-dx.com' Subject: RE: 30 years of skywave DXing Wow! Very interesting reading. I'm now 48. I got my start as many of you did from my father. He was a DX'er but doubt that he knew of DX clubs. He had several old Hallicrafters before his brother-in-law (my Uncle, of course) got him a new Hallicrafters S-120A at the Army PX. My uncle was a manager and "dented" one up for him so he could get it for $10 off. :) Dad wrote stations and received QSL cards or written veries. One of dad's relatives was driving around his house and clipped his longwire antenna with his truck and it pulled his 38-D off of the table and busted it. D'oh! I liked DX'ing all bands, AM, FM, TV, SW (both broadcast, utility and amateur) and Public Service. Caught my first TV sporadic E signal in the mid 1970's (KBTX 3 from Bryan TX and then Tampa, FL). My old GE tabletop radio heard all kinds of MW skywave, nightly including Orilla, ON and X-Rock 80 (XEROK). I received something from the ANARC from a radio station that I QSL'ed. I joined NASWA, the NRC, Miami Valley DX Club and the WTFDA. I corresponded with Ed Shaw (Lexington, KY), Glenn Hauser (Knoxville, TN at that time) a TV DX'er from Florida (Wayne Thompson?), Rick Dau and quite a few others. I had a Hallicrafters S-53A, an S-38E ($3.50 Flea Market find in 1976), RS DX-160 and later a RS version of the Uniden CR-2021, the DX-400. I also had GE and Grundig long range portables for the MW band. I wish that I had the DX-160 back. My primary focus while in college was AM, FM and TV. These days just AM and FM. I jumped on the ULR bandwagon. Actually the radios' barefoot are not quite as good as my GE Superadio or Grundig S-350 but thanks to a Curtis Sadowski supplied SRF-59 (at his cost) and a gift from Gary deBock, my MW DX'ing hobby has been reenergized. Now I am dreaming of air core loops, ferrite transplants and Superloops. I got my ham ticket in 2006. I feel bad as dad always wanted to get his ham ticket but had "code-phobia." Now he is almost 80 and could most likely pass the written tests up to General with ease but on a fixed income doubt he could get on the air. 73, Dave in Indy ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
Re: [IRCA] 30 years of skywave DXing
Funny thing, John. FIFTY years later, I get WXNT (ex WIRE) 1430 on 520 KHz TODAY on a MODERN receiver (Eton E-100). Oddly interesting! 73, Dave in Indy -- Message: 4 Date: Thu, 14 Apr 2011 14:18:06 -0500 From: John Sampson To: Mailing list for the International Radio Club of America Subject: Re: [IRCA] 30 years of skywave DXing Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Fascinating thread and I have to add my 2? worth. My DXing started while at summer camp in Minoqua, Wisconsin, in 1951. We lived in Des Moines at that time, I was quite a baseball fan and our local minor league club was a farm team of the Chicago Cubs. I had a Silvertone portable at camp and one of my cabin mates was from Chicago and also a Cubs fan. He suggested we try to get the Cubs broadcasts over WIND. We were quite successful at night. There wasn't much to hear there during the day, all I remember is WLIN, Merrill, WLBL, Auberndale and WOBT, Rhinelander. When I returned to Des Moines, I decided to see what I could hear and found that I could hear stations from all over the midwest and south. The Silvertone radio had an interesting IF (for instance, one of my early loggings was WIRE, 1430, Indianapolis, which I heard on 520 kcs., also, local KSO dominated 550 kcs on that receiver) so I was finally able to graduate to a Stewart-Warner table model, which was an excellent DX radio. In 1953, just before moving to Omaha, I was given a Hallicrafters S-53A for Christmas. I can still remember hearing KULA from Honolulu on it one morning about 7 AM before going to school. I heard some 1200 stations from Des Moines and also started verifying about the time we moved (have a grand total of eight from Des Moines). After moving to Omaha in early 1954 the DXing continued. One of my first veries there was from KCNI, Broken Bow; the signer was one of officers in the NNRC and he suggested I join them, which I did. Around 1955, Marv Robbins moved to Omaha, contacted me and I now had a good DXing buddy. Marv also introduced me to the NRC, which, after seeing his bulletins, I immediately joined and been in the club ever since. (When the IRCA formed in the mid-1960s, I also joined it. I've also been a member since that time except, perhaps, for a brief hiatus when I forgot to renew membership). The Omaha DXing was, of course, curtailed in the winters by College but I still managed to verify over 900 stations while living there. After graduation from College in 1960 we moved around the country for the next twenty years, so I was able to DX from both coasts, the southeast and, finally, again, the mid-west. One of my favorite memories was taking the early morning feeding time for our children when they were babies in the '60s and then staying up for a while after they went back to sleep to enjoy DXing. I did make it to Ernie Cooper's for one of his Thanksgiving get-togethers, I think it was while I was in school in Cambridge, Mass, in the late 50s. I also hosted a couple of get-togethers while living in Freehold in the early '60s and had a great time entertaining a number of well known DXers. The primary DX spot is now Grand Rapids in Northern Minnesota, we're generally there from May thru November. The rest of the year, we're in the Phoenix metro area, unfortunately, during the prime DX season, as this is probably the worst DX location I've had . I still verify occasionally and have some 3600 to date. Enough for now. - John S. ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

I 've been listening and Dxing on almost the whole radio spectrum for most of my life and first contact was when I was about 6 or 7 in the old country when there was no such thing as FM so my mother had a radio tuned to one of only a hand full of stations and I guess reception was not local because one day she was listening and had to touch a length of wire attached to the radio and she let me hold it to show me that the weak signal became a bit stronger. That kind of got me interested in listening whenever I had free time after school etc.then after moving to N.B.Canada at 9 I was preoccupied with life as a little kid and sort of let radio go of radio for awhile until a radio was available at home again and I became familiar with stations that played top 40 rock and roll and so when I became old enough to earn a few cents I got my first pocket transistor radio and put it under my pillow at night and discovered night time radio listening (and daytime skip in the winter) and tuned into the big cities where all the stations were playing R&R and finding all the ones doing top 40 which basically every station was doing.I found more and more stations over the years and then turned listening into searching and bought Radio & TV Experimenter Mags for the White Radio Logs which alternated between frequency lists and call letter lists every other month. School and other interruptions prevented me from becoming a total fanatic so I did not persue the hobby seriously and maybe turn it into a professional thing but it's been something that I got addicted to and I'm still at it now. Back in the sixties I was listening to WBAL 1090 Baltimore and they were IDing as WBAL Radio 11 so I wrote them a letter asking why 11 when it was 1090 and they said it was a more familiar way of IDing since most radios had an 11 on the dial and that was my one and only QSL that I got but I lost it years ago.During the summer months I spent some time Dxing on FM and TV which kept me busy during daylight hours..I've bought, listened to, opened up and played with so many radios over the years that if I still had them all now I could open up a radio museum.I still find the odd old multi band receiver at a second hand store and scoop it up for a few bucks for old times sake and try to see what it can do in the way of outperforming the previous one. Dxing was easier in those days but still as much fun now.I guess I'll be doing it for a while yet.Bill in BC ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

DX buddy Todd in Woodbury told me to relay this message 2 days ago. Maybe I should check & see if it's still on! He says their new format is thrash metal, sometimes also called death metal. We were wondering if this is the only MW station with this format? They're relatively low-powered and directional (day & night), but the odd format (if still on) should help alert DXers they might be getting it. This station isn't listed at radio-locator.com or Barry's site, either. They've been on (and off) a short time with various formats. They're the 22nd station within 20 miles of St. Cloud if I counted correctly. Re: [IRCA] 30 years of skywave DXing
Fascinating thread and I have to add my 2¢ worth.

[IRCA] Memories, Part II
Bob Foxworth's mention of my DX reports from Germany in 1957-58 and Pete Taylor's mention of his early days in the hobby remind me of the great value of friendships built up by membership in DX clubs. At about the same time I was in Germany, Pete was in the Coast Guard stationed out of Hawaii, plying the South Pacific, and he, too, reported his DX catches to Fred Van Voorhees' International DX column. Also, at the same time, Jack Hathaway, in the Air Force, was on duty at the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and reported his DX catches as well. When I came out of the Army in 1958, I had followed my family from Oregon to the Texas Panhandle, where my father became the first dean of the new School of Business at West Texas State. Several new members in Amarillo joined the NRC in 1958, including John Tudenham, who has been a friend for life, and Jack Hathaway's next Air Force assignment was ... Amarillo Air Force Base. Jack had taken some graduate college work while in the Air Force and was a couple of credit hours and a dissertation away from his Masters Degree. I introduced Jack to my father, who hooked Jack up into a course that would fulfill those requirements. With the Masters, Jack was able to obtain a post-service job in the registrar's office at the University of Illinois-Champaign-Urbana ... and from 1970, when I took a radio job at WMIX in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, Jack and I were two hours' drive away from periodic visits. Earlier, late 1966, the aforementioned Pete Taylor was moving from Kaiser Broadcasting! 's landmark beautiful music station, KFOG in San Francisco, to Boston, where Kaiser (with 10-percent ownership by the Boston Globe, had purchased WXHR-AM, FM & TV from Harvey Radio Labs. I was at KILT Houston at the time, and Pete offered me the opportunity to move to Cambridge to help build WXHR-AM into WCAS, a heavily local news operation, with three daily newsblocks and two three-hour locally-oriented telephone talk shows. WXHR-FM became WJIB, another legendary beautiful music station, and WXHR-TV became WKBG-56. It was fun to reminisce about our experiences together when Pete attended the NRC convention in D-FW in 2003. I first met Foxworth when Randy Kane and I took the train from Boston to NYC and the subway to Brooklyn for one of Ernie Cooper's famous Thanksgiving weekend get-togethers. Randy and I stopped at WCBS where Bob had a night engineering job ... a couple of photos I took on that 1967 excursion can be found on the NRC website. Foxy would visit us in Watertown, Mass., from time to time, back when the BAD Guys (the Boston Area DX'ers) published DX News. The neat thing about it -- we're still making memories. Re: [IRCA] 30 years of skywave DXing
IRCA, I was always fascinated by the radios in our house when I was very little. We got a new one when I was about 6 or 7, and instead of sitting up on the top of the refrigerator it was on an end table in the living room, where I could reach it. I turned it on and stumbled across the Indy 500 in full swing. I thought this was the coolest thing in the world. A couple of years later I got a crystal radio kit from the Cub Scout catalog and put it together as well as my 8 year old fingers could. IT WORKED!!! I heard KOLD, all of about 12 miles from my house, but I had been bitten, was heavily infected, and would never recover. When I was about 10 I spotted a neighbor hauling a huge wooden Philco out to the curb. I rescued it and with a lot of advice from my Dad replaced some of the caps. I loved that radio. A very kind telephone lineman gave me a partial reel of wire for antennas. I did not realize until years later, what a gift he had given me. (several hundred feet of co! pperwield, something I could never afford back then). I soon had wire going everywhere. I used to wait until my parents went to bed, then quietly close my bedroom door, and roll up the throw rug to prevent light from leaking out under the door. Then turn on the light, and DX half the night. I could never get any of my friend interested, so it was a pretty solitary pursuit, which did not bother me much. I am now 64. I have had my Ham License for over 30 years and am creeping up on 300 countries confirmed on the Ham bands. But I still chase DX on the BCB and enjoy it just as much as I did when I was 10. I can just afford better equipment now. Re: [IRCA] 30 years of skywave DXing
I don't usually go in for the 'look back' stuff ... I must be 'getting old' as this thread has 'sucked me in.' I got 'hooked' on DXing one night in 1968 when my dad brought home the Nems-Clarke field strength meter he used at the radio station he was CE for, WILS in Lansing, MI. Not only could we HEAR DX but we could measure its 'field strength.' As we stood in the basement, him showing me how it worked, we heard an ID on 640 for KFI ... and the ever-present interference from Cuba co-channel. I got pretty excited and wrote for a QSL. Some time later one arrived -- a typed letter from KFI's CE with a DX-stamp attached explaining about the Cuban station and international radio agreements, etc. My interest grew from there -- begging my dad to do a 'proof of performance' test so I could stay up and watch [not realizing that he didn't arrange those, the FCC did and they were never welcomed], letting me push 'the button' to change from day to night power/pattern or reading any request for QSLs they received at the station. Years later, as I stood in a field in Belize with a Potomac Instruments FIM-41 trying to get a reading on a Guatemala City AM station via ground wave I thought about by dad. The 'radio gene' had been safely and securely passed on. Unfortunately, I am the last generation of 'radiomen' in my family. Times have changed and I gather so has the commercial radio industry - probably several times since the 'family owned', 'top 40' station my dad worked for got sold to new owners more than once over the years. I don't regret the experience or time spent 'at the dials.' I never have to worry about having a hobby when I retire as long as someone is still broadcasting.

Allen, You have a great location for all those trans-Atlantic stations. It'll be really interesting when you get wire antennas up as you indicated in your previous message. When do you first hear signals from the tas? I am going to assume that as you live near the ocean that with the sea gain plus location you start to hear the higher powered stations well before local sunset. Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] 30 years of skywave DXing
I was in 6th or 7th grade in Cromwell, CT and the first ever "DX Catch" I made from home was 1020 KDKA pittsburgh. Not a big feat for most, but for a pre-teen who was just beginning to understand radio, this was a big deal! The first "DX Catch" I got in a car was a few weeks later while riding in the car with my mom and got 1190 WOWO Fort Wayne, Indiana. Both signals were pretty loud and rock solid. Almost 100 percent of my DX is AM, I never do TV and very very rarely DX FM.. I only get an FM DX Catch by accident. The hearing of distant signals was part of the reason I became interested in working in radio! A few months later, my Uncle came by my house and gave me a real nice 1950s table top radio and spent the afternoon with me installing wires and an insulator from my bedroom radio to a tree about 75 feet away! I picked up Detroit, Chicago, Boston, Richmond, Pittsburgh, Louisville with pretty good regularity and a good signal. ..And after 6 years, I am still in the business.. on the air, being local and having fun! [IRCA] Newfoundland Ultralight Radio Trans-Atlantics & Domestics Report April 13-14
Hello To All Conditions last evening showed a slight increase in better propagation as the K Index lingered at 2 . Re: [IRCA] 30 years of skywave DXing
Wow!

I was born and raised in Los Angeles and my brother (7 years my senior) was an active ham in high school in the late 50's and had naturally hooked me into SWLing. One day he mentioned that "broadcast band" (haven't used that term for a long time) stations also had QSL cards. Fortunately, he had a Hallicrafters S-76 which made DXing a lot easier. I don't recall what my first BCB QSL was, but I was off and running. I was already a NNRC member, but soon joined the National Radio Club and was, eventually, an IRCA founding member after attending the infamous Denver convention. Still remember corresponding and running around with Frank Williams, Larry Schwartz, Tom Seaver, and Randy Seaver. My best DX was, and probably still is, 500 watt WMHI-1370 in Braddock Heights, MD. The radio influence was so pervasive that I seriously considered a career in broadcasting. Carl Mann and Glen Kippel had some serious talks with me and that was that. Geez, really miss shortwave interval signals and Monday morning frequency checks on "the broadcast band".
