[IRCA] Drake R8
Hi Everyone, I got the R8 back from Drake today and one thing I can say is WOW. What a difference. It is like a new radio. The L/C filters are uniform now, along with the passband tuning. The sensitivity is back up. The receiver had been bad for sometime. Probably several years. It was such a slow process, I never caught it until recently when the S Meter readings had dropped. There were other things too that I did not know about that were repaired. With the shipping both ways and the repair, it was $431.00!!! Not inexpensive, but $130 of it was shipping, handling, insurance, etc. The parts were under $60 and the labor was two hours at $240. For the techs out there, what was replaced: number keypad (They get gummy and often need to be replaced. 26 pin diodes (Over half were bad or suspect,so they replaced them all. 2 electro caps in power supply another filter cap They did a preamp mode (But is still doesn't work below 1800 khz) They replaced the preamp fet Two resistors, as the passband tuning had drifted off through the years. Realigned passband Replace two transistors, as one of the audio jax died. (That was years ago that I had forgotten about. Cleaned the switches and pots KSWB (local) is back up to S9+35DB tonight. I presume they will be at S9+38 when they boost to 1 KW tomorrow morning. Already I have noticed two station on 1710 tonight, off the NE EWE, the Russian pirate with some music station underneith. By the way, I thought the SPR4 was close to the R8. Well, not so with the R8 back to factory specs. I wonder how much good DX I have missed over the past few years, especially the TA openings? If I would have known this earlier, I would have shipped the R8 back long before now. I was using a Palstar presellector with the SPR4, as it helps with the sensitivity. The R8 doesn't need it. If anything, it adds noise. I am very pleased indeed!!! 73, Patrick Patrick Martin Seaside OR KGED QSL Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] CJRB 1220 MB
I have CJRB back. I used to hear it, but since the sensitivity on the R8 dropped, I had not noticed it for sometime. I could not even detect it on the SPR4, as KKEE 1230 Astoria (7 miles away) is splattering, and the SPR4 just doesn't handle the overmod. No trouble on the LSB on the R8 on 1220. Clear as a bell. CX are not even good tonight. There is an unid talk station (sounds like CtC) behind CJRB. I can't wait until I have some good conditions! [IRCA] RE WSCR IBOC - Schedule
For the benefit of the midwestern DX'er; Chicago's WSCR 670 is known to switch off it's IBOC when broadcasting a White Sox's game, making 660 and 680 listenable. Here is a link to the White Sox schedule on WSCR. Note that this evening the game will begin at 6:05pm CDT. http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/schedule/broadcast/index.jsp?c_id=cws Hope for a long game, the possibility of sunset DX and little or no thunderstorm static! The IBOC should come back on immediately after end of game, ready or not, the opening will be over. Let's see if the IBOC goes off on schedule. I will be tuned in to 680 around 6pm today. Re: [IRCA] Hawaii Radio Heritage - Hawaii Calls
As a kid in the mid to late 1950's I recall hearing the program Hawaii Calls . This was probably aired on a Chicago AM station. We only had an AM Band radio back then, no FM, no Shortwave and no TV! The program had beautiful Hawaiian music and in the background you could hear ocean waves breaking on the beach. [IRCA] Unid on 6668.060 LSB
A bit off-topic, but with a sizeable DXer population in the north-west, I'm hearing an unidentified transmitter on this very strange frequency. Most of the time, they relay 92.9 KISM, Bellingham, WA which is quite close to me, and easy to hear on a portable. But, this is not always the case. Last night they definitely were not in //, but are now at 23:09 UTC. I can also hear them at poor/fair level (same as here) on a remote receiver in Seattle. [IRCA] RE WSCR IBOC - switched off this evening!
Well, I think Eric's theory (below) is correct - WSCR switched off it's IBOC almost on time this evening according to the White Sox schedule for today, at 6:10 PM! And, this is an away game in New York. Tom Original message.. good point I know what you are saying but I had heard (and it could be wrong) that IBOC is turned off for some sporting events for both home and away games. Home games, for people in the stadium, obviously. But also away games for those radio broadcasters who try to persuade viewers to turn the teevee sound off and watch with the radio on . . . just a thought ef ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Right, I didn't think it was a studio link either, especially since it's in the point to point air band, I believe. No transmitter on that frequency, and the air band, besides, is USB. Patrick, try again after sun down, as it's audible in Seattle, so with your super antennae, you should be able to hear them. Sure a mystery to me! ...Walt On Wed, Apr 27, 2011 at 11:32 PM, Paul B. Here's a link to one of the programs: http://www.angelfire.com/ky2/cumberlandgapbc/491229HawaiiCalls.mp3 ...Walt On Wed, Apr 27, 2011 at 10:39 PM, amd...@core.com wrote: As a kid in the mid to late 1950's I recall hearing the program Hawaii Calls . This was probably aired on a Chicago AM station. We only had an AM Band radio back then, no FM, no Shortwave and no TV! The program had beautiful Hawaiian music and in the background you could hear ocean waves breaking on the beach. Re: [IRCA] Unid on 6668.060 LSB
Getting it here, 0130 utc on after hunting for it. As noted, hard to get a readable signal; LSB best. Level is poor to weak with the midwest storm static just starting to come in. I had the same problem the first time I found it, trying USB, AM, LSB, DSB, etc. Finally was able to get semi-readable signals on LSB just above 6668 kHz. Interesting that you hear them as well up in Alberta! Where the heck is it coming from??? .Walt ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Walt, I am getting it now. Not audible off the Eastern Beverage, but both the NE NW EWE's have it. Playing John Cougar Mellencamp's Hurt So Good at 0217 UTC. About S7 here on peaks. Although none of my antennas are set for Shortwave.

I would guess it is coming from the Bellingham area. But if not a transmitter link, I was thinking a pirate, but why rebroadcast KISM? 73, Patrick Patrick Martin Seaside OR KGED QSL Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
