[IRCA] West Michigan DX Log 9/5/11 thru 9/14/11

2011-09-14 Thread Tim Tromp
DXing from West Michigan - times/dates in UTC

There's a lot to digest here, but most are new logs extracted from
spectrum recordings when chasing DU's last week. Here are the
Southwestern highlights:

650 XETNT (TENT) Los Mochis, Sin. - 1107 UTC 9/5/11 - With call-in
show and Mex. music, many mentions of "Roberto Guerrero" - maybe the
show's host? Also "Radio sesenta y cinco" and mentions of "Radio Cast"
and "Chavez" all suggesting XETNT per
http://www.promomediosinaloa.com/lmm/index.shtml. Great signal and
new log. (TROMP-MI)

700 XEDKR Guadalajara, Jal - 1100 UTC 9/12/11 - Good under phased WLW
playing bits of Johny Cash music such as "Walk the Line" with SS
announcer commenting on the artist and into legal IDs after TOH with
several "Radio Red" (in accented English) slogans thrown in between.
New log. (TROMP-MI)

710 XEDP Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, Chi - 1109 UTC 9/5/11 - Strong with soft
SS song then drawn out callsign and frequency check and "La Ranchera"
slogan at 1109 UTC. New log. (TROMP-MI)

710 KGNC Amarillo, TX. - 1117 UTC 9/14/11 - With sports news read by
local announcer and local ads between headlines, signal fair and
nearly all alone on the frequency. Traffic and weather at 1120 UTC.
New log. (TROMP-MI)

730 KKDA Grand Prairie, TX. - 1108 UTC 9/5/11 - "Soul 73" with - you
guessed it - soul music. 500 watts peaking good at times but
suffering from a strong het on 729 khz and unknown SS station
underneath. Noted again on 9/13/11 very strong at 1058 UTC with local
announcer talking about upcoming local events including the "KKDA
Family Reunion". Relogs (TROMP-MI)

740 KCMC Texarkana, TX. - 1100 UTC 9/13/11 - With local ads for
Texarkana before leading up to ID at TOH, poor. New log. (TROMP-MI)

750 KHWG Fallon, NV. - 1100 UTC 9/14/11 - C/W song leading up to TOH
with "You're traveling with K-HOG, Classic Country, K-H-W-G...", even
signal with phased down WSB with WTHQ also mixed in. Signal
dominating by 1110 UTC with a "hawg" ID with pig snort sound effects.
Relog. (TROMP-MI)

760 XEABC (mwlist.org says San Sebastián Chimalpa, while the IRCA
Mexican Log says Los Reyes de la Paz), Mex. - 1100 UTC 9/13/11 - Good
under phased WJR with SS talk and ID finally given at 1102 UTC "ex eh
a bay-say, ah bay-say radio". New log (TROMP-MI)

790 WMC Memphis, TN. - 1100 UTC 9/13/11 - C/W music with TOH ID
"Country Legends, W-M-C Memphis" and right into another c/w song,
difficult copy under WBBM IBOC hash. New log. (TROMP-MI)

1020 KMMQ Plattsmouth, NE - 0403 UTC 9/5/11 - With SS talk and music,
thanks to Dean @ #MWDX for confirming audio on this one and for the
new log. (TROMP-MI)

1070 KNX Los Angeles, CA. - 1126 UTC 9/5/11 - Very good near
local-like signal for a few minutes with local weather, time check,
and into "Your Money, your life" segment. Relog but never this good!
(TROMP-MI)

1030 KCTA Corpus Christi, TX. - 1059 UTC 9/5/11 - Terrible copy under
WHO's hash maker, but caught a mention of "kctaradio.com" and into IRN
USA Radio News at TOH for a new log. (TROMP-MI)

1190 WSQR Sycamore, IL. - 1123 UTC 9/5/11 - With classic rock music,
local IDs and local morning call-in show. New log. (TROMP-MI)

1270 KGNM St. Joseph, MO. - 1100 UTC 9/5/11 - With contemporary
Christian music and "We're your hometown Christian radio station",
good. New log. (TROMP-MI)

1570 XERF Ciudad Acuña, Coah. - 1100 UTC 9/5/11 - Poor under WBGX with
mention of Ciudad Acuña and Mexico with "La Poderosa" slogan and into
Mexican National Anthem at 1101 UTC. New log. (TROMP-MI)

1590 KVGB Great Bend, KS. - 1100 UTC 9/5/11 - Good signal at TOH with
"K-V-G-B, The Voice of the Golden Belt, K-V-G-B, 15-90 K-V-G-B Great
Bend. An employee owned equal radio station." and into ABC News.
New log. (TROMP-MI)

1590 WIXK New Richmond, WI. - 1102 UTC 9/5/11 - Now over KVGB with
local weather and spot for Twins/White Sox Labor Day doubleheader and
ad for Wisconsin Radio Network. New log. (TROMP-MI)

1690 KDDZ Arvada, CO. - 1059 UTC 9/5/11 - No official ID but Radio
Disney clearly heard under WVON dead air, so KDDZ for a new log.
Disney nearly dominating the channel by 1114 UTC, long after WVON
modulation returned. (TROMP-MI)

1700 - XEPE (TENT) - 1101 UTC 9/5/11 - Heard two ESPN's out of sync by
a few seconds (national commercials included). One obviously KBGG,
but the other? Besides XEPE, I couldn't find any other ESPNs listed
for 1700. Would be a new log if I could confirm it. (TROMP-MI)

[IRCA] More Quirky Australian AM Radio

2011-09-14 Thread Geralyn Hollerman
For anyone interested:
---
Australian Heritage AM Radio
Series 1
Long Lost Australian Radio
Stars 2XL Cooma, 4GY Gympie
and 2WL Wollongong

The latest additions to this popular series hosted by the Radio
Heritage Foundation at www.radioheritage.com have now been published.

The features take a nostalgic look back 65 years to the mid-1940s and
the personalities, programs and station profiles of Australian
Heritage AM Radio across the country before TV and FM arrived on the
scene.

Slightly quaint and qwirky for today's reader, the first series has
already reached 50 features of individual stations giving a wonderful
insight into how radio entertained and informed Australians of the
age.

The new features cover two original country radio stations 2XL Cooma
and 4GY Gympie, as well as the famous 2WL Wollongong and all three
are free to access at www.radioheritage.com.

Old station letterheads and photos have been found to illustrate the
features along with original station logos and station advertising.

2XL Cooma 'Centre of Monaro' broadcast for 8 hours daily with special
sessions for local towns such as Bombala and Adaminaby. It's biggest
claim to fame was the Thursday night Yodelling Session with regular
listeners from New Zealand and many letters each week from Tasmanian
fans.

Yes, a Yodelling Session. We wonder how this would fit in a current
commercial station format in 2011.

This coming November 3, 4GY Gympie will celebrate 70 years on the
air, having started just before the outbreak of WWII in the Pacific.

Originally amateur radio station 4JO, it's owner S L Fittell fought
hard for many years to obtain the commercial licence for 4GY.

The feature includes a photo of the first studios and popular radio
serial stars from The Quiz Kids as well as introducing 4GY
personalities such as Eric Chippendall, Beryl Reed [Womens Session]
whilst manager L G Smith had a background travelling the world as a
radio operator on tramp steamers.

Radio 2WL The South Coast Station was one of the best known
commercial stations in New South Wales outside Sydney and began
broadcasting 80 years ago on July 18 1931.

Russell A Yeldon 'Uncle Bob' was owner, controller and announcer in
1931, and the station grew quickly to expand coverage around
Wollongong and build a strong on-air team including Margaret
Broadfoot [Friendship Club], George Hilders [South Coast Hit Parade]
and Ian Marshall [Around the World With Song].

Syd Hayes of the Illawarra Rugby League was a popular sports voice,
and a number of other personalities are also featured.

Many other early radio personalities are included in these three new
features on 2XL Cooma, 4GY Gympie and 2WL Wollongong.

If you have your own memories, memorabilia and more you'd like to
share about any of these stations, or any of the 50 stations
featured in series, the Radio Heritage Foundation wants to hear from
you.

It may be some old photos, booklets, newspaper or magazine articles
or even some recordings. Memories of listening to the radio over the
years are also important and wanted because they help people
understand the important community role played by radio over several
generations.

Re: [IRCA] Alberta TPs for 14 Sep 2011

2011-09-14 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Yes, Australia on 828 isn't that uncommon from here in September. This
morning's signal wasn't anything special, so I didn't keep a
recording. Nothing from Asia at all this am. The Asians don't hit
their prime here until October, so in another month I'm sure it will be
the Asians dominating.

702 - ABC Sydney was weak, but heard woman talking at 1304
792 - Presumed Brisbane, with traces of audio at 1303
828 - weak audio during ABC news at 1301
891 - ABC Adelaide was by far the best DU signal this am, the best I've heard
it this season, with lengthy periods of 100% copy.
1116 - 4BC was in and out with weak audio, best at 1302,
1548 - bits of audio, but 1550 splatter was strong

Re: [IRCA] Off Topic - Obsolete Semiconductors

2011-09-14 Thread Mike Hawkins
To go along with that, electronic technicians are also becoming obsolete.
There used to be a day when you would troubleshoot a board by carefully
applying a scope or meter probe to the appropriate place to take a
measurement. Those appropriate places are now dwarfed by the size of the
probe. Diagnostic codes, diagnostic lights tell you what to remove &
replace. There's probably one above the tech's head right about now.

2011-09-14 Thread amdxer

This is slightly off topic and
regards semiconductors suitable for RF work with
leads.  I have built many home brew electronic
circuits and kits over the years and repaired many radios,
TV's, Computer circuits, etc. using either parts from a
local Radio Shack or purchased from a supply house.

Last week I received a notice from Digi-Key
informing me that Fairchild Semiconductors will cease
producing the popular FETs such as the  MPF102
and  2N3819 in another year or so.  The
substitutes are going to be surface mount
equivalents.  I am sure this will also apply to
transistors suitable for audio work

I began the DX hobby 50 years ago using tube
sets.  I lived through the demise of the vacuum tube
and happily evolved with technology to use
semiconductors.  But now we enter into the third
generation of scaled down components.   This
transiton will not be that easy.

Re: [IRCA] Nearest locals

2011-09-14 Thread Mark Durenberger Mobile
At my lake cabin I have an Apex (Best Buy) digital converter...getting
over-the-air TV from a rooftop antenna. Hash is generated that goes right
up the coax to the antenna (and radiates along the way).

I was able to eliminate it by building an "RF Choke"...winding 11 turns of
the coax through 5 toroid rings. Placed the choke right next to the Apex.

You're right; satellite downlinks seem to be relatively clean.

Almost every router I've tried (Linksys/Cisco among them) generate(s) a lot
of hash...and that seems to travel along the associated data cables to/from
computers...again acting like antennas. It's depressing to pass a pocket
portable near these cables.

I'll have to try the "RF Choke" idea on the Comcast cable feed...will let
you know what happens.

Mark,

I have lots of satellite gear, 6 different satellite receivers and 4
dishes in the backyard and if you get within 6 feet of the receivers,
they do generate digital hash, but move away, there is no noise.
No noise detected on the R8 from any of the satellite gear 20 feet away.
The Charter Cable in the neighborhood really causes TVI though. The
neighbors with Dish or Direct TV I get no noise from them.
OK, on the DSL. Routers can be noisy I have read. Not having one, I
have no experience with them.

Hi Patrick. He probably meant the gear associated with DSL service...that
usually includes some form of router (aka "Hash Generator")

Another fabulous noise-box is the set-top converter for digital TV!

Good catch for KELO, your on a side lobe of their array.
Greg Belfrage does the QSLs there by email. the "contact us" link on
keloam.com goes to his inbox.

I've eliminated most of the computer/network generated noise here by
setting a laptop up for internet sharing through the wireless card, no
router just a cablemodem that seems to behave itself for RF emissions.
My worst problems now are a plasma TV on one side and an old
Heath/Zenith motion detecting light on the other of me.

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 14 Sep 2011

2011-09-14 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Listened today between 1230 and 1310 UTC, and all the action was DU
once more, zero from Asia. Audio noted:

702 - ABC Sydney was weak, but heard woman talking at 1304
792 - Presumed Brisbane, with traces of audio at 1303
828 - weak audio during ABC news at 1301
891 - ABC Adelaide was by far the best DU signal this am, the best I've
heard it this season, with lengthy periods of 100% copy.

1116 - 4BC was in and out with weak audio, best at 1302,
1548 - bits of audio, but 1550 splatter was strong

73,

Re: [IRCA] K-Love Farrell, Pennsylvania

2011-09-14 Thread Jim Renfrew
The station web pages were all screwy, with innacurate program info,
mentions of stations in the group being off the air for a time and new
owners. This is why I wondered if the call letters were up in the air, too.
Thanks everyone.

K-love coming in pretty well tonight on 1470. I'm sure it's WLOA in
Farrell

PA, but not sure of the current call letters. Anyone know?

Jim

This site is showing K-Love in Farrell currently as you had thought and
mentioned with the WLOA callsign . I think this site's info is up to
date. It does show the K-Love slogan also.

Re: [IRCA] Nearest locals

2011-09-14 Thread Tim Hills

Ouch Dennis,

I have a few pests myself that make DXing a bit of a challenge at times.

KXRB 1000 10KW /100Wt, both directional, 5 miles
KSOO 1140 10KW ND/5KW Dir. 4 miles
KELO 1320 5KW ND/Dir. 3 miles

The directional patterns of those 3 converge in my living room.
Last winter I heard Niel Boortz ranting about something or another on
the chain link fence (KSOO) and country music coming from the toaster
(KXRB). Maybe I should have sent reception reports ;)

There's also 2 low power stations
KWSN 440W ND day/night at 6 miles
KZOY 500W ND day only, listed as 6 miles but more like 1 1/2 miles. I
can see their 400' tower from my kitchen window when the trees are bare.

We also have a 1W transmitter on 1620 on the other side of town but I
have yet to log it at this location.

On the upper SW bands I've had problems from the KELO TV 2000' tower
about 7 miles away., 2 full power TV stations and a low power
translator, 3 (4?) FM and the NOAA station plus State repeaters and who
knows what else.

Finally got the last parts in for my receiver project. Hoping to be
doing some serious DXing this weekend.
