[IRCA] TP for 23 Oct 2011 from Victoria: Down a bit
Compared to yesterday's excellent morning, this morning was down somewhat (as experienced by Dennis, but contrary to Bill's report). I monitored between 13:35 and 15:02 (well I'm still hearing Japan on 774 at 15:04 as I type this at poor/fair level). SF 164, A 1, K (12:00) 1. No space weather past 24 hours. Minor space weather storms with R1 blackouts predicted for the next 24 hours. Had a little of everything this morning. Of interest was our local Village 900 mostly with an OC only, and with BBC news coming on 15 or 30 seconds after the TOH, allowing me a glimpse of who else might be on the air. I did hear an excellent ID at 15:00 for 900 KKRT, Wenatchee WA (and 1020 sister station). Not bad, as they're listed at 1000w day, and 72 watts at night. Not sure when the changeover is, as I also heard them at 14:30 with an ESPN and WA sports ID. Otherwise, I did note a modest but definite dawn enhancement again. These pips seem ever more likely to have been from HLAZ.I've been doing some recording at 0900 and 1000UT, and the same pips turn up on 1566 at those times. On the 22nd at 1000UT, they were preceded by KK talk by man, likely to be HLAZ at that hour, though I didn't hear an ID.The 1300UT pips may have been an error in automation, as the JJ broadcast doesn't normally use pips. best wishes, Nick At 05:50 11-10-11, I wrote: Has anyone else heard time pips on 1566 during TP openings? [IRCA] WGBW DX test
Hi Everyone: Listening last night while the test was on, 1590 was, as usual, one big jumble of noise. Only IDs I heard at the time were for KBND and KFLE. So I quit listening live as I knew, sooner or later, people would report hearing IDs and TTs at certain times. And they did. Armed with a list of what was heard at what time I went back over the recording this morning and sure enough all the morse IDs and TTs were there, along with flute music. Only thing missing were the voice IDs. Surprisingly, all this was heard on my EWE as somehow I had forgotten to switch over to my E/W beverage. Many thanks to all those responsible for making this happen. No luck with hearing the WGBW test this morning (Sun 11/23 @ CDT). Local station KMIC (Radio Disney) is on that frequency with IBOC. From my QTH here in far SE Houston (Clear Lake City), it's very hard to get a null on KMIC using my DT-400W. [IRCA] TP DX for Saturday, Oct. 22nd
Sorry for the late upload of these logs; I just got around to reviewing WAV files for Saturday. As others have mentioned it was an above average morning. -- 594 Japan JOAK Tokyo with male announcer in Japanese, 3+1 TPs at 1300. Poor to fair level; definite sunrise enhancement later with improvement to very good. 657 Korea UNID at 1305 with Korean talk by female. Poor level with brief boost to fair, and then a major boost at sunrise. 693 Japan JOAB Tokyo at 1300 with faint talk and 3+1 TPs. Parallel to 774. Poor, but noted with very good signal at 1400. 729 China UNID with female talk in Chinese at 1411; fair to good level briefly. Jiangxi RGD maybe? 738 Taiwan BEL-2 (tentative) with typical buzzy transmitter, obliterating any audio. Strong level... too bad the audio couldn't make it through. 747 Japan JOIB Sapporo with Japanese talk at 1259, brief music, and 3+1 TPs at 1300. Poor to fair, but very good signal later towards local sunrise. 828 Japan JOBB Osaka in Japanese, with music parallel to 747, and 3+1 TPs 1300. Poor but improving to very good at times near 1400. 972 South Korea HLCA with Korean singing by female at 1350. Fair. 1017 Japan JOLB Fukuoka with two male announcers talking in Japanese, fair at 1352. 1134 Japan JOQR Tokyo with faint talk by man in Japanese, 3+1 TPs 1300. Poor. I wonder if 3+1 time pips is a Japanese practice, even though JOQR is in the NCB network rather than the NHK stations? 1566 South Korea HLAZ noted with female announcer in Japanese at 1259-1301, with multiple FEBC IDs. Fair. 1575 Thailand VOA Ayutthaya. Finally some audio on this frequency at 1428, with filler music to English announcement This program comes to you from the Voice of America. Poor to fair signal. I sat on 1590 from 0005 to 0150 CLT and didn't hear a trace. WGBW's day pattern, as has been alluded to already here, has a deep null almost straight at me (to protect WPVL and/or KWBG, I would assume). [IRCA] New Australian Radio History Features
For anyone interested: --- Long Lost Australian Radio Stars 2GF Grafton, 2KA Katoomba and 3GL Geelong The latest additions to this popular series hosted by the Radio Heritage Foundation at www.radioheritage.com have now been published. The features take a nostalgic look back 65 years to the mid-1940s and the personalities, programs and station profiles of Australian Heritage AM Radio across the country before TV and FM arrived on the scene. Slightly quaint and qwirky by today's standards, the first series has reached over 50 features of individual stations giving a wonderful insight into how radio entertained and informed Australians of the age. Fans of any of these individual stations can now be recognized online as well if they become a current sponsor. The new features cover two original NSW country radio stations 2GF Grafton and 2KA Katoomba, as well as 3GL Geelong and all three are free to access at www.radioheritage.com. Old station publicity and photos have been found to illustrate the features along with original station logos. 2GF Grafton - The Voice of the Clarence was First for Information, First for Entertainment and First for Inspiration' and station manager was J K S Lowe whilst Miss B Charleston 'a keen horsewoman and golfer' was an announcer. In permanent relay with Station 2GZ, 'The Voice of the Mountains' 2KA broadcast from studios in the main street of Katoomba. Although it 'does not claim metropolitan listeners, probably no other country station is received better in Sydney' says the feature. Old Established 3GL' began broadcasts 80 years ago in November 1931, the second country station in Victoria. Owned by the Geelong Advertiser newspaper, 3GL carried Victorian Football League matches, the 'Cashmere Bouquet Show' and had a staff of 19 people. If you have your own memories, memorabilia and more you'd like to share about any of these stations, or any of the more than 50 stations featured in this series, the Radio Heritage Foundation wants to hear from you. It may be some old photos, booklets, newspaper or magazine articles or even some recordings. Memories of listening to the radio over the years are also important and wanted because they help people understand the important community role played by radio over several generations. [IRCA] New Feature - Chinese Radio in 1937
For anyone interested: --- _ Chinese Local Radio in the 1930's _ The Radio Heritage Foundation releases a new feature 'Chinese Radio in 1937' at www.radioheritage.com which offers a fascinating insight into early radio broadcasting in China. Advertising sponsored shows, story telling, radio plays, news, modern Chinese music and Chinese jazz were all part of the popular programs heard from some 89 stations across China in 1937. This contemporary review of Chinese radio appeared just 15 years after the first stations, all American owned and operated, appeared on the dials, and a decade after the first Chinese owned station began operations in Shanghai. Scores of little stations, with power ranging from 100 to 500 watts regularly broadcast programs which boast a popularity easily comparable with that of the top-notch network performances in America wrote author Robert H Berkov at the time. The review [originally in Modern Mechanix magazine] includes rare photos of popular amateur singers at XHHS in Shanghai and some of the facilities for powerful XGOA in Nanking. It follows the earlier release of 'Shanghai Radio Dial 1941' which details all stations in the city at that time, and together, the two features serve to introduce 1930's Chinese radio to a wider audience. One thing is certain, Chinese listeners by the hundreds of millions have been entertained and informed by their own local radio stations for almost 90 years, and radio remains incredibly popular. [IRCA] WGBW Test
Just getting to my overnight recordings now... WGBW was heard well with a voice announcement at 0100 EDT, followed by bugle call, calliope music, and various other strange music (including the Mickey Mouse theme). A very slow Morse ID that sounded sent by hand started at 0105:30. The test seemed to continue beyond 0200, with the same sequence repeating then. A relog, but it's always fun to hear a DX test. The surprising thing was that I also heard WGBW at 0805 EDT, well past sunrise here, with a formal sign-on announcement. [IRCA] LW NDB - 42 mi typical GW range? Or is my stock PL-606 really that deaf?
I was on my way south from Riverside, CA, this afternoon, so I decided to see how far the SB NDB on 397 kHz could be heard on my stock Tecsun PL-606. When I was just leaving Temecula on I-15 heading south, I made this recording at around 5:33pm PDT on 2011-10-23 about 42 miles from the transmitter site at a heading of approximately 162°. Their transmitter site is approximately 34°3'23.2986N 117°21'58.0608W. http://www.mediafire.com/?4ptyh5178s38rji The radio was sitting in the back window of a 2006(? - maybe 2008 I don't know for sure) Honda Accord, and set to 1 kHz bandwidth, using only the supplied internal ferrite bar antenna. The signal strength was indicating 15/00, but if you listen very carefully (headphones REQUIRED (preferably ones with good isolation, not the cheap ones that typically come with consumer radios - I'm using JVC Marshmallow model #HA-FX38 or something like that which I believe are around $20 at malwart ;) )) you may be able to make out parts (or if you have exceptional ears, all) of three repeats of ... -... in ~1000 Hz CW. Is that the typical expected range of an LW NDB signal? Or.. how much improvement could I expect by using a different LW antenna with my PL-606? For example, if I had one of Gary Debock's LW FSL antennas or 7.5 LW loopsticks, should I expect a midday signal more like this, but at 32°45'38N 116°56'42W (about 92.8 mi / 149.3 km @ 165°)? I made the mistake of recording it about 15-20dB or so too low and had to raise the volume after the fact.) The signal was so strong here, in fact, that I was able to hear its 2nd harmonic (794) with the Sony SRF-59. http://www.mediafire.com/?u9p9n1buvtn5sw7 Speaking of LW FSLs, $150 is way out of my price range for building an antenna. Is there something that's more like $20-40 or so that I could build that would be a noticeable improvement (sensitivity going from undetectable to armchair copy or from readable-but-weak to full quieting, selectivity / blocking/desense improving so I can hear, on MW for example, stations around 30-100 µV/m without any adverse effects from first-adjacent 3-10 V/m signals on one side and maybe 30-100 mV/m or so on the other side)? ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] Tonight's TAs in Victoria...
I have audio on 783 again tonight // to 7245 with the same monotoned male speaker at low modulation. This is at 05:20 or so UTC. About as well as I've ever heard them, but far from arm chair copy! ...Walt On Mon, Oct 24, 2011 at 4:11 AM, Nick Hall-Patch n...@ieee.org wrote: 783 has an audible carrier just after 0400UT, but that seems about it... Re: [IRCA] Tonight's TA in Victoria...
783 actually delivered audio traces at around 0525UT this evening, with a man talking, but at near imaginary level in the splash and noise, so hardly what I would consider a parallel with 7245 which also had a man talking. By 0535, it has faded to a weak carrier. Another time! best wishes, Nick ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
