WRAQ is not a licensed AM call per the FCC website. It does have a Western NC
pedigree, having once been used by Asheville-1380 and Brevard-1240. I suspect
that is the reason for the tower site hits.

You probably heard WKJV 1380 or WZGM 1350, or whatever 1350 is this week.

Asheville, NC is one area I knew a little bit about.. so i thought
something was up.

Even though the proposed tower for 1490 is in Asheville, it's proposed COL
is Woodfin.

This 1490 has no call letters, NO CP.. isnt even licensed yet.

That can't be it.

It is JUST an APPLICATION, doesn't even have CALL letters and not even had
a Construction Permit Granted.

Hi All:

What about CJMR - 1320?  They're licensed to Mississauga and though they're now
100% ethnic, I used to hear them here in English in the AM doing local nx.
Apparently there wasn't enough local interest to keep up that part of their
program schedule.  I suppose the new 960 could have a fair bit of power, since
the two old 960s in Ontario (Kingston and Cambridge) are long gone to FM.  But
wouldn't a decent power level for this one tend to draw it into the Toronto

Just like Walt observed, things were down a bit here also, after
yesterday's good morning. In fact when I first listened at about 1400
things were very poor, with only 774 at audio level, but a number of
signals jumped up to audio level around 1430.

Todays audio:

594 - Japan, poor
747 - Japan, poor
774 - Japan, fr-good
828 - Japan, fr-good
1422 - Japan, poor
1593 - China, fair

2011-11-25 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
No, seriously.. I'm asking.. you contradicted yourself there.

if they're Part 15, it's legal.

if they are running multiple Part 15 transmitters slaved together at one
location or multiple transmitters synched together across different
locations, that's legal.

Part 15 AM deals with individual power of each transmitter, not multiple
transmitters together.

[IRCA] TP for 24 November, 2011 from Victoria: Not a bad morning!

2011-11-25 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Sorry to be a day late on this one, but had to rush out the door early.
Listened from 15:03 to 15:16 UTC only. I was pleased with the improvement
on Thursday morning here in Victoria. This season, I haven't followed
Alaskans, but ran across an excellent, strong ID for KINY 800 at 15:03, way
over any closer domestics. Didn't check for any of the others due to time
constraints. SF 140, A 6, K (12:00) 3. No space weather. "6" unless
otherwise noted:

529: 7 level SQM
747: 7 level NHK2
774: 7.5 level NHK2

Noted today, around 1500UTC another and this time an illegal Hmong station with
Pt. 15 type power on 1710. Just a little background, St. Paul is rich in the
Hmong community and have operated a Pt. 15 station on most of the x-band
frequencies. Sometimes they operated 3-4 stations at a time in different parts
of St. Paul. This in addition to semi-local 1600 and newly acquired 690 within
the past 6 weeks or so.

But
wouldn't a decent power level for this one tend to draw it into the Toronto
metro market?

slick jingles, parady oldie songs, old nostalgic clips of WLS, WABC and

booming on peaks. As usual, no contact information given for QSLs or

[IRCA] Antenna success, mostly...

2011-11-25 Thread Tim Hills
I've been working on a remote controlled ferrite antenna that has at
least some unidirectional characteristics.

My latest attempt is in the attic over the garage and is working better
than I expected so far. I had to rush it a bit since I start a job that
will require a lot of travel and hours on 12/01 and probably won't have
time to play with it again until late April.

The "rod" is a composite, 1 8" rod of about 400 permeability and a 5"
rod of ~125 permeability in line with a 1" gap between them surrounded
by 6 6" rods ~125 Perm. All rods are 3/8" diameter and overall length is
14". 28t CT 100/44 Litz for the tuned winding and a 12t 40/44 pickup
winding. Rotator (and 2 of the 6" rods) were salvaged from a dead
Ray-Jefferson ADF.

Varactor tuning and a preamp using low noise/high IMD immunity dual gate
MOSFETS. Balanced RF to the receiver is fed through dual RG-6 that was
hooked to the sat. dish with dual grounding block attached to a Copper
drain pipe that runs under most of the basement. Balun on the receiver
side matches it to the unbalanced 75Ohm input of the DX-440. Cheap IR
surveillance camera mounted to the roof joist is my directional indicator.

The end with the 8" rod has a much deeper null than the the other. WNAX
(5KW@54 miles) gets completely nulled on one side but still shows 5 bars
on the 440 on the other. Locals at 1140 and 1320 still come through very
strong even with power to the antenna shut off, the 440 has lousy
shielding but the 6' between grounding block and balun is probably
enough to pick them up. No noticeable intermod even with the strong
locals and adjacent chan rejection is excellent, still some slop around
1140 and 1320 but that could be partly the poor shielding on the
receiver but I can tune out IBOC on the lower part of the band..

I left the regen/Q multiplier out for now and it doesn't have the
ability to tilt. Both would improve the performance of the antenna but
for now I'm just going to put an EM shield on it and call it good. Busy
winter/spring and slack summer/fall for work so by the next fall DX
opening I should be pretty well set up.

I'll see if I can find my vidcap card and post a demo to youtube showing
the directional capability of this antenna. It's come a long way from
the earlier version Rick got to play with.

No pulse noise here at 05:30 CST on 1610.

OM in SS at ~85* (CHHA?) and OM in EE at ~75* (CJWI?) both null on the

Of course and much Spanish as I know he may have ID'd 5 times...
