that already have and I accidentally named them here, keep it off), open their
audio to full NRSC spec, and turn on their C-Quam (or other analog stereo)
exciters.  If possible, I'd like them to use a stereo format that doesn't have
any platform motion even when you have skywave/groundwave fading or
off-frequency co-channel interference, and can maintain stereo separation even
with weak signals that only a DXer would be able to copy.  (My SRF-42 that I
had, and
may still have somewhere, would have stereo mode on signals that other
similar-sized radios with similar-sized antennas could barely detect at all.
BTW it was forced stereo - every station would be in stereo mode even if it
actually wasn't broadcasting C-Quam - it wasn't dependent on pilot tones.)  I'd
even forgive IBOC-like splatter if it's because their analog high frequency
response is vastly improved.

Stephen

Re: [IRCA] WHO and iboc

2012-01-17 Thread Craig Healy

That sounds like a good step in the right direction. I would also like

(snip)

These do not run IBOC in the Providence, RI area: WBZS-550, WPRO-630,
WPRV-790, WRNI-1290.

WHJJ-920 does run IBOC daytime, but never at night. Their antenna system
isn't broadband enough to run it on night pattern. It's the only one in
town that still uses IBOC. I do think that if it were to fail, they'd never
bother to repair it.

WBZS (Former WDDZ) also never ran it at night for the same reason. The
current owners don't use IBOC. I was the contract engineer for WDDZ and
there was never even one listener who contacted them about IBOC.

I never saw WPRV-790 run IBOC. WRNI also isn't inclined to use it, even
though it's installed.

As for upgrading audio to better quality? All but WRNI are talk, such as
news and business. WRNI is Hispanic and does have music. FWIW, the RI
Public Radio programming moved to WELH-88.1 FM. The Hispanic programming
now on WRNI was swapped from WELH on that change.

Re: [IRCA] For DXers targetting 1700-XEPE ....

2012-01-17 Thread DXERak
I decided to try to hear what Tim Tromp heard in West Michigan on Saturday
morning-- the Mexican National Anthem played on 1700 kHz at 0800 EST or
1300 UTC. Sure enough, Monday morning at 1256 UTC I heard a weak but
unmistakable playing of the Mexican NA on that frequency, although like Tim I
could
hear no other IDable material that I could link to XEPE..

The assumption that this is XEPE has merit. Not only is XEPE the only
Mexican station on 1700, but 1300 UTC corresponds to 5 AM PST. By regulation
all
Mexican stations must play the National Anthem at midnight and 5 AM local
time, so this station was performing its regulatory obligation by playing
it then. Baja California state, location of XEPE, is the only state in
Mexico in the Pacific time zone.

Thank you for the tip, Tim!

Re: [IRCA] WHO and iboc

2012-01-17 Thread kennethnaw

Hi,
One more thing I would like to add is that if IBOC is so good, how come
WBBM 780 started simulcasting on 105.9 FM last year and in their station ID
they mention Crystal clear on 105.9 FM.

That sounds like a good step in the right direction. I would also
like

I do think that if it were to fail, they'd
never bother to repair it.

WSBS is unneeded here but there was somebody very faintly under CJBC at about
1915, but couldn't even determine what type of music was played.

Thanks to Barry and Rob for the tip. I heard it around 6:45 PM, but I had

IBOC was never intended for AM. The NAB and stations wanted it. So they
got it. Now they find it isn't as wonderful as they once thought. :-)

[IRCA] DX tips ? from Burnt River ON

2012-01-17 Thread Chernos Saul

I've managed to snag some time at Burnt River ON, just as the Green Building
Sustainable Strategies magazine I'm now editing goes to press. Been an
exhausting few weeks, and have been so preoccupied with this that I've barely
checked these lists. Tonight... KJOC 1170 IA is pounding in with Real Oldies
Channel stuff860 WSBS MA is huge on 860, crushing Toronto840 has country to
se/nw, suspect WKTR VA (daytimer)750 and 780 good to Venezuela. Had 1170
presumed Colombia earlier in evening with sports talk in Spanish with talk re
futbol and many mentions of Colombia. Some TA audio - 684 and others from Spain,
693 UK, nothing really exciting. Will put out one or two ICE BOGs to the west
tomorrow. Would have done that today but it was pouring rain, followed by a
deep freeze. I'll wait till it's dry so can pull the wires back in when I
leave. Otherwise they get embedded in the ice. Saul ChernosBurnt River ON
