[IRCA] DXing from Kilauea crater
OK - standing in the pitch black with the YL staring down into a glowing crater might not be DXing - but it is right up there with sheer excitement of the radio hobby. Actually had my FT-60r handheld and keyed the local repeater and chatted to Victoria via an "IRLP" internet/radio link. Staying at the Nohea Volcano Cabin - http://www.volcanoplaces.com/nohea/nohea.html Which seems fairly quiet for DXing - Noted they have WiFi here (a linksys) and a BPM extension on their network (which I will definitely unplug if it becomes noisy!) I have not been an acoustic environment this quiet in a very long time - can hear a few crickets... and that is it! 73, -- Colin Newell is a Victoria B.C. Re: [IRCA] KGDD 1520
KGDD 1520 Portland still has a Tx site (even if a Google map doesn't show it) as it is good and strong here in Vic BC with there Musica Latina as is evident by the possible absence of the recently launched KKXA Snohomish- Everett Wa.The signal is steady and I'm not hearing any Classic Country at this time. The Seattle area stat ion pobably was knocked off air by the snow storm today. Can Bruce in Seattle verify this? Re: [IRCA] KGDD 1520 OR City
Patrick, The last time I drove South on the 205 it was still there, that was a while back. It's located across Interstate 205 from KEX's tower and behind a Church with 3 towers. Will also try Google earth. Re: [IRCA] Pacific storm & KDUN 1030 kHz
Thanks Dennis. Yes, we were lucky this time and the power of the storm hitting the Central and South Coast. I think we hit 60-65 MPH gusts a few times at the most. Cannon Beach hit 63. The wind has died down now. Windy tomorrow but not a big deal. The storm we had in November was much worse with gusts 85-90 MPH, and the antennas stayed up. KDUN here at 200 miles is pretty strong. Their 630 watts at night even does well. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin Seaside OR KGED QSL Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] Pacific storm & KDUN 1030 kHz
Patrick, Happy to read that your antennas survived the recent Pacific storm. The only thing that came down here was the mail box after the county snow plow drove through plowing at a high speed. We got 20"of snow on the ground and sagging antenna wires from snow and ice. With rain forecast through Sunday all the snow will be gone. KDUN 1030 is pounding in here at S-9+40 db on the Sky wire and High Performance Active whip. Their 50 kw is really getting out, never realize they had that strong of a signal. Re: [IRCA] KGDD 1520 OR City
Thanks Paul. I will pass the info along. KGDD has been running reduced power for sometime I read via the PDX Radio site. So that explains why they are weaker. Re: [IRCA] KGDD 1520 OR City
I fgound the site pretty easy.. its a few hundred feet to the right, mapwise, of the school. Google Maps is a few hundred feet off usually.. I found and see the KGDD site pretty easily. That being said, Google Earth doesnt take pics all that often, so it can be years between updates and things change, move, etc Paul On Wed, Jan 18, 2012 at 6:30 PM, Patrick Martin wrote: > A friend e mailed me and he could not find the old 1520 transmitter site > on google earth. [IRCA] Pacific storm
Hi everyone, Well, we have another Pacific storm hitting us. So far my antennas are doing fine. The winds along the North Coast haven't hit above about 60-65, but the Central Coast (Newport area) really took the hit this time. Some of the areas with high wind gusts this morning include: Otter Rock 110 MPH Cape Foulweather 110 MPH Yachats (30 mile S. Newport) 109 MPH Newport 95 MPH Lincoln City 84 MPH. Highway 26 between Seaside and Portland is closed because of many trees that are down between the two areas. A lot of other highways are closed too. It has been quite the storm. Inland, lots of snow before moving to rain. It is 52F now with wind gusts at about 55-60 MPH, but they should die down this afternnon to 40. But wild weather again.
