Re: [IRCA] More fun on 1400 (Graveyard DX)

2012-01-28 Thread Stephen Airy
I haven't concentrated much on graveyard DX, but there are a couple that stood
out for me.

First one was several years ago (probably at least 6 or 8 now, I don't
remember).  I have a local on 1240 about 11.2 miles west of me, KSON (now
KNSN), whose signal is strong enough to pretty much have the frequency all to
itself (unless I null them).  I tuned to their frequency using a Panasonic
RQ-SW20 (or SW10, can't remember and both models have the same radio circuitry
inside) and Select-A-Tenna, as I noticed KSON was on the air but with an
unmodulated carrier.  Well lo and behold, I heard Radio Disney underneath.
Checking their affiliates list revealed a station in Albuquerque, NM, KALY,
about 616 miles east of me.  (That station is no longer airing RD.
Incidentally my local 1240 had been a Disney affiliate prior to this catch.)

The other one was more recent, within the last year or so.  I had gone to sleep
with my SRF-59 listening to - what, I forget exactly, but was most likely 1070
KNX, 1090 XEPRS, 1110 KDIS, 1580 KMIK or 1700 XEPE.  I woke up around TOH at
either 5am or 6am (this was in winter so it was still dark outside), put the
headphones on and turned the radio on.  Not 10 seconds after I turned it on, I
heard a faint voice "Equis, E E Equis" in the static.  I was unable to get much
more as the signal was so poor, but that was enough.  Upon checking the FCC's
website, I found that apparently my radio's tuning had been bumped during the
night, as I had 1230 XEEX Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico.  There was no splatter
from my local 1240 (probably because the radio wasn't tuned exactly on
frequency, but a little bit low like maybe a few kHz), but even more
interesting was there was virtually no audible co-channel chatter like you'd
normally expect on a graveyard.  XEEX
virtually had the frequency all to itself, even though it was very faint,
although I could hear a little bit of the infrasonic heterodynes underneath
like other stations were trying to break through, but couldn't come up with any
audio.

Am I the only one who has had catches like that?  (Digging out GY DX out from
under a local that blankets the frequency, or turning on a radio after the
tuning had inadvertently gotten bumped, and getting a TOH ID within 10 seconds
on a GY channel (or any) that had the frequency all to itself?)

Another thing I thought of the other day...  I wonder how the "graveyard"
nickname for these channels got their name?  I'm guessing it had something to
do with the frequencies having so many different stations receivable in a given
location that nothing would be intelligible without a lot of patience, even
though individually they'd be strong enough to be almost like locals in many
cases.  Well I was thinking what about a nickname, like "ghost channels", for
those that maybe only have one or two stations audible (and no splatter or IBOC
from local/strong adjacents), but whose signals are so weak that you'd be lucky
to hear any audio, and would more likely only hear the beating of two clashing
carrier frequencies?

I doubt it is allowed if the FCC knew. However will few FCC officials
out there these days, who is there to enforce the rules? When I worked
at KVAS Astoria in the 70s, we were supposed to drop to 250w at LSS, but
on Fri/Sat nights often we would stay on 1 KW to get out better for our

that, but the owner said to stay on high power, so we did.

Re: [IRCA] (OT) Spam

2012-01-28 Thread Guy Atkins
Hi Nick,

I've always used Admin access on my PCs and consider it to be more secure
that way as I have access to more options (such as setting timers for
anti-virus scans).

Over the years I've used both Avast! and AVG free versions, and although
they are very good for zero cost, a couple years ago I purchased ESET Nod32
Antivirus and have been extremely happy with it.

I first read glowing comments about ESET Nod32 from European DXers on the
Perseus Yahoogroup. I find it works very smoothly and rarely needs any
attention. Here's a review of version 4.2:
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5770&review=ESET+NOD32+Antivirus+4.2+Review

One thing I like about this software is that it has minimal impact on PC
performance. In tests with the PCmark benchmarking utility, ESET Nod32 only
slows down the computer by 3%. Most anti-virus programs take a 10% hit on
performance.

[IRCA] Dr. Kaku on 1010

2012-01-28 Thread David Faulkner
In addition to WLBG, 860, I also noted Dr. Kaku on 1010.  Their station list
says this was WSPC, Albemarle, NC.  If it was them, they were doing nicely, on
top of a good bit of QRM (several stations, but no apparent WINS).  The time
was 1845-1855 EST.  If it was them, it's a new logging.  Just what I need,
another NC.  I already have 130 of them!

Just out of interest, how many users of Windows normally run their

suffered from viruses etc.?

Thanks, and sorry for OT.

Re: [IRCA] (OT) Spam

2012-01-28 Thread Russ Edmunds
I guess given my prior experiences with Outlook and also with IE, I'd not be
comfortable with a Microsoft-distributed security software, and I suspect that
Security Essentials, like AVG and Norton, don't play well with other security
software if one wanted a backup. One nice thing about Avast is that it does -
or seemed to. I had to switch over to AVG because whatever vendor my employer
uses for their security software doesn't accept remote users with Avast.

[IRCA] 1550 DX Test Reminder ( KRPI WA. )

2012-01-28 Thread bill kral
As the last few post lists indicate, the 1550 KRPI Ferndale Wa DX test has
been put aside in favour of new items to report so I'll just throw in a little
reminder that at 0:100  PST( Sunday AM) the DX test will be conducted. At 1600
to 1700 PST Saturday 1550 went from a loud and clear Vancouver Wa baseball game
( no KRPI) to a 50/50 mix of the two stations at 1630 to a now dominating
Ferndale at 1700. I don't know if Van Wa does a pattern shift or was just
covered by a stronger footprint from Ferndale which has now assumed a more
steady signal. I will be tuning in when the test commences. Bill in BC

I guess I thought that being an administrator actually placed one in

run anything without having to enter a password, or be denied access

Re: [IRCA] (OT) Spam

2012-01-28 Thread Craig Healy
At my various clients, I have somewhere over a hundred computers to
maintain. Viruses show up primarily from someone clicking on infected
email, or going to a dangerous web site. Other computers have been infected
from outside by a malware that invaded that computer which had no antivirus
program. When a decent antivirus program suce as McAfee, Symantec or Panda
is installed and kept current, very rarely is that infected. Other things
that really help are better quality routers such as Sonicwall TZ-210. While
it is somewhat expensive on a yearly basis, it does seem to prevent the
invasions.

When I have to deal with an infected computer, I usually will restart using
a Linux-based Knoppix CD to work on it. Can't infect a CD.

Doing a backup to a separate storage does help a lot, and having an
antivirus program scan the infected hard drive separately on a different
computer also helps recover it.

[IRCA] DXpedition to Lubec, Maine

2012-01-28 Thread Bill Whitacre
Just before Thanksgiving - Nov. 19-21, 2011 - I visited a place called Quoddy
House [QH] , near Lubec, Maine.

I learned of it from a DXpedition report from Dallas Lankford. I would link
his excellent report here but I no longer have access to Dallas's personal
Yahoo group. I've been banned.

If you can't get all the way to Newfoundland, Quoddy Head is about the next
best thing.

For an antenna I used a distant relative of a flag array designed by Neil
Kazaross. We've dubbed it the doubleKAZ and 2 of them look like this:

I used a terminating resistance [Rt] of 1000 Ohms and Wellbrook FLG100s and a
Wellbrook phaser for the impedance & phasing parts of the antenna.

The 2 x doubleKAZ was pointed at about 30 degrees from true North ... which is
not exactly where I thought it was but as it turned out was an optimal
direction for what I heard.

I don't keep written logs but instead go through my Perseus top-of-hour [TOH]
recordings and make a webpage with sound samples.

You can see and hear what I heard by going here:

Besides the plethora of TAs that I can't hear at home I was fortunate enough to
hear China on 1521 and Alaska on 1170kHz.

I hope to get back to Quoddy House again next year!

[IRCA] Fwd: Solar Eclipse in the USA

2012-01-28 Thread Russ Edmunds
Please review the below item. Eclipses can provide some very unusual DX on AM
because depending on the amount of totality and the length, conditions start to
act somewhat like sunset, but with the enhancement following the path of the
eclipse.

Even though it will be only partial here, I'll probably run 2 or 3 unattended
recordings during it.

Re: [IRCA] (OT) Spam

2012-01-28 Thread Geralyn Hollerman
Actually, I do, or rather, did, at my office. Oddly enough, just this past
week, my office PC was hit by a virus. That PC was about 9 years old -  yes, I
should have been more vocal about rotating it out and getting a newer machine,
but frankly, with all the budget cuts the university has had in the past few
years, as long as the thing still worked, I don't think it was going to be
rotated out any time soon! My administrator account was fine, only my personal
account appeared to be affected, but the entire computer was rendered useless
by yet another virus, brought in by the first, I was told. As I understand it,
the version of the Windows OS I use at home is slightly different from the one
used at my office, and there really isn't a way to use multiple accounts on
this computer without changing some things.

2012-01-28 Thread Stephen Airy
*slaps self on wrist*  I normally run with an admin account (I'm also behind a
hardware firewall/router which I'm sure helps).  There are a lot of things I do
that require admin access and I get sicker of having to authenticate every few
minutes than you guys do of hearing IBOC hash. ;)  I haven't suffered much from
viruses, although I'm starting to get a little suspicious as sometimes I'll see
hard drive activity even when I'm not sitting at my computer.  (It could be
caused, though, by the fact that I often intentionally have so many things
running simultaneously that my pagefile USAGE is upwards of 1.5 to 3 times the
CAPACITY of my physical RAM!  (I have 4 GB, but 32-bit windows only addresses 3
GB.))

[IRCA] Some GY DX

2012-01-28 Thread Phil Bytheway
Well... I turned on my Prius radio Thursday in Kingston while
waiting for the ferry... heard 2 new station (for me) on 1340. Following is my
"report". Both of these were "new" for me!!

1340    KTFI    ID, Wendell. "KTFI" ID 2005 just surfacing at TOH (eat your
heart out
Murphy!). Also noted EWTN talk show with man at 2010. Checked on-line
EWTN network which listed KTFI vs radio-locator.com which lists them as "Super
Talk 1270". Also a couple of on-line articles mentioned switching to EWTN. New.
(pb-WA)

1340    KACH    ID, Preston. ID 2019 by woman and into "Ride Like the Wind"
then f/o.
Noted at 2021 with "AM 1340 KACH" ID and into song. Then I boarded the
ferry from Kingston to Edmonds. Getting off the ferry at 2100 noted
another ID mentioning "sports" and into ABC news. New... and here I
thought I'd logged them before!!(pb-WA)

pb-WA    2007 Prius stock car radio at Kingston ferry dock

Hello Paul
Last week I was checking program details on 1060 XEEP Radio Educations web site
and was bitten by a Trojan infection.  McAfee full  scan did not shift it and
finally killed it with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free. Lost my records.
Fortunately key ones stored off site. What kind of guys get their kicks from
spoiling others enjoyment.

Best wishes

Unfortunately, some spamscum - probably in the eastern European time zone, by
the date stamp - spoofed or hacked my AOL mailbox around 1:15 CST January 28
and sent out mass spam to everyone on my contact list.

The good news is that over 200 of these messages were blocked by your e-mail
and ISP providers - and returned to me (ugh). The bad news is that many were
not, if the queries from many of you are any indication.

AOL made me change my password this morning before I could access my e-mail
account, so I'm hoping that the problem is over for now. This isn't the first
time that my e-mail address has been spoofed, but it's probably the most
extensive hack I've experienced since 1994, when I set up this e-mail account
with AOL.

My apologies to all who were affected and annoyed, and thanks to all who sent
queries to notify me that my e-mail had been compromised -Paul Swearingen,

Wonderful frequency! At 16:00 UTC I hear 3 IDs. The best being
"Thank you for listening to KFJL, Central Point OR". Also another 2
I'll have to check the mp3. Earlier, at 15:59, I heard an ID for KADR
Elkoader IA. Other two to follow later today, but have to go to
work!...Walt Salmaniw, Victoria, BC

It's fun to park on a frequency and see what others are hearing, then
try it yourself. In Victoria, at 15:45 UTC I heard an ID for KDTA
Delta, CO and a website that sounded like KDTA-AM.com. Quite a few
others cochannel as well..Walt Salmaniw, Victoria, BC

[IRCA] Kiwa loop repair question

2012-01-28 Thread David Yocis

Thanks to everyone who responded, on list and off, to my antenna questions from
a few weeks ago.

I have another question for these learned groups -- I have a Kiwa loop antenna,
vintage circa 1993, which is my all-time favorite indoor MW antenna. It should
be going through those difficult teenage years right now, but it's acting
rather aged these days. Nulls and gain are not nearly what they used to be,
and I think it needs a tuneup of some kind. I know Craig stopped making these
some years ago, but does he (or anyone else) do maintenance on them?

Any info would be appreciated!

[IRCA] R390A-URR for sale

2012-01-28 Thread David Yocis

Greetings DXers -- I have a Motorola R-390A/URR gathering dust here that really
ought to have a better home. I bought it around 20 years ago from Miltronix in
Toledo (OH) http://www.dxing.com/r390/mish.htm and used it sporadically until
something gave out. It probably would be easy to fix if I were someone who
knew how to fix these, but I'm not. If someone would like to take this off my
hands for a small fee -- best offer will be accepted -- let me know.
Preference would be given to someone who could pick it up from me directly here
in Harpers Ferry WV or in Washington DC, where I work. As you know, the danged
thing is pretty heavy and, without having looked into it, I imagine that the
shipping cost would be high. David yocisdavidyo...@hotmail.com or

Re: [IRCA] KRPI 1550

2012-01-28 Thread bill kral
Before this one gets left behind I'm sending in one more report. At 00:50 PST
KRPI is dominant on the slot but not as clear as 24 hours ago as there is a
stronger Vancouver Wa signal creating a less stable signal from Ferndale Wa.
But I would say that the day rig at KRPI is still operating in preparation for
the upcoming test. There's no fading happening so I'm assuming it's the
groundwave that's active across the roughly 40 miles between Ferndale and
Victoria. Bill in BC
