[IRCA] Free access without app or web? It's called radio.
Radio Netherlands Worldwide By Andy Sennitt 11 February 2012 On World Radio Day, 13 February 2012, UNESCO will remind the world that there is a medium which reaches parts that other media can't reach. Radio is still a vital form of communication because a radio station can be set up much faster, and at much lower cost, than a terrestrial or satellite TV station. Radio is especially useful for reaching remote communities and vulnerable people such as the illiterate, the disabled and the poor. It also provides a platform for such groups to take part in the wider public debate. Radio also plays a vital role in emergency communication and disaster relief, which was illustrated following the tsunami in the Indian Ocean in December 2004. RNW was able to help several partner stations in Indonesia by sending out “radio stations in a box” – self-contained mobile FM stations providing a temporary studio and transmitter ready to be used by broadcasters whose own facilities had been destroyed. One billion people do not have access to radio, let alone technically more complex media like the internet On 3 November, 2011, the 36th General Conference of UNESCO approved the creation of an annual World Radio Day. The initial idea came from the Spanish Academy of Radio four years earlier. The date chosen was 13 February, which corresponds to the birth of United Nations radio in 1946. World Radio Day seeks to raise awareness about the importance of radio, facilitate access to information through radio, and enhance networking among broadcasters. Website: http://www.worldradioday.org Education: World Radio Day is intended as a focal point for discussion and debate on the role of radio in supporting the most vulnerable sectors of the worldwide community. Various events have been organised around the world. In London, a mix of practitioners, academics and tools providers are coming together at the School of Oriental and African Studies for a one-day conference on “New Perspectives on Traditional Radio”. The conference organisers point out that radio is still the world’s most active, localized broadcast technology. Because radio is a free and accessible platform, it plays a crucial role in promoting development, improving livelihoods and supporting access to education. They point out that “you don’t need an app or the Internet to access the radio!“ Social engagement: But that doesn’t mean that radio has to stay in a timewarp. It’s easy to fall into the trap of imagining that the transmission platform is the only important element. For example, some shortwave hobbyists – and sometimes even broadcasters themselves – consider that when an international broadcaster stops using expensive, inefficient legacy technology like analogue shortwave, it has somehow ceased to be a proper broadcaster. The London conference will be looking at how different technologies can serve to change the way in which radio is used as a platform for social engagement. Boring: That’s probably the biggest change in radio during the time I’ve worked in it. When I started listening to radio, it was a passive medium, especially international radio. On some stations, the programmes often consisted of an announcer with a strong accent reading out a poorly translated text on a boring subject, guaranteed to minimise the chances of getting a reaction from the listener. In fact RNW was one of the first international broadcasters to experiment with the kind of direct listener contact that is now the norm in radio. In the 1980s, before the advent of the internet and handheld devices, I took part in some live phone-ins for the English service, which went out in some of the Saturday transmissions. There were four transmissions to different parts of the world, and we were amazed at how many people were prepared to make an international phone call just to speak to us. Grassroots radio: These days, much of our two-way contact with international listeners is done online via Facebook, Twitter, and our websites and blogs. But on local stations, it’s much easier to get involved via the programmes themselves. When I was at university in the UK in the early 1970s, I experienced at first-hand just how grassroots radio worked. On a sunny day, I walked across the deserted main square to the studio, and I said on the air that it was ideal weather to take a radio outside and sit in the main square listening to us. At the end of my show, I walked back across the square and there were several hundred people, and lots of radios playing our station. Coincidence? I’d like to think not. I believe that, at a very basic level, it demonstrated the power of radio in a small community. I might have a 25 to 30 dB null on them with the western Double KAZ antenna, but phasing can add 10 or 15 dB more. But even w/out phasing, in good cx, KNZZ can override WTAM and is routine enough that I rarely mention hearing it. Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] KHWG 750 Fallon NV Heard in Madison WI
When I saw Mark's e-mail, it struck me that I had logged KNZZ 1100 Grand Junction CO as a DX test many years ago. Sure enough, I found it in my logbook, 11/30/98 0206-0209 ELT-- message explaining the NRC, Morse ID's, closing message. Morse message was KNZZ repeated 11 times in a high pitch followed by one time at a lower pitch. My notes also say that I followed 1100 for the next hour only to find no more ID'able material. I did a little research in e-DXN's PDF archives of past DXN's. I found that leading up to the date of the test it was not on the CPC calendar-- so no doubt it was quickly arranged and news of it only got out via internet and word-of-mouth. The test must have been arranged by the NRC, as several reporters noted the message about the NRC that I mention above. Since there was no published pre-notification of the test, there is no written record of the test's parameters. My notes do say that the test was scheduled from 0200 to 0400 ELT, but I made no notes on power. I would suspect that they were running on 50kw ND and not their directional 10kw night facilities that directs their signal NNW/SSE. It is also possible that they were running at their CH power of 36kw which first was licensed around this time.. In DXN 66-11 (12/14/98) and 66-12 (12/21/98) the following East of Mississippi DX'ers report hearing this test: Greg Myers VA and Gerry Bishop FL (also Ray Arruda MA and Steve Kennedy PA report this as a tentative). The following DX'ers West of Mississippi report hearing it: Bob Karchevski CA, Pete Taylor WA, Rocky Robello UT, Frank Aden ID and Patrick Griffith CO, Does anyone else remember hearing this test? 73 Bill Dvorak Madison WI In a message dated 2/13/2012 7:06:13 A.M. [IRCA] Morning conditions from Waikiki for 13Feb2012
Thought I'd be a bit more energetic and check out the MW band this morning from our Waikiki beachfront lanai. Started at 15:58 UTC while still dark and listened for the next half hour. Compared to years past conditions were pretty uninspiring. As I expected, I mostly heard Australian stations, with a Kiwi or two as well. All I have for equipment here is a Gary D. converted Tecsun PL 380 with the larger ferrite rod antenna. Most of what I heard was in the upper half of the band, although I did start up there in any case. A moderate dawn enhancement was noted. Most signals were threshold. Here are my results (6 level/threshold unless otherwise noted): 1116 Good reception with ID for 4BC at 16:21 1143: Fair with English talk at 16:20 1170, 1323 1132: EE at fair level 1370: local HI station with CRI in English about shopping in Beijing, then a tribute song to Whitney Houston. 1386: Good reception with Indian music from NZ 1440: Looking for Kiribati Nothing heard today 1512 1548: Very good reception with Adele at 16:37. Minor splatter from local 1540 1557 1566 1575 1584: poor to fair with music. To SW from me. No TOH ID 1593: fair with EE pop music at 16:30 That's it from sunny 80 deg Waikiki. Aloha! [IRCA] Bruce's Saurday (Seattle) Get-Together
Hello All, Local Ultralight radio fanatics (and those yet to be converted) gathered together for a very enjoyable DX-related meeting during typical (dreary) Seattle weather at Bruce Portzer's comfortable house on Saturday. In attendance was Chuck Hutton, master DXpeditioner and resident authority on obscure 9 kHz-split DX stations (and to my knowledge, the only DXer to have ever received 1566-India on an Ultralight radio from North America, having accomplished this during a 2008 Newfoundland DXpedition), Bruce Portzer (another Asiatic DX authority, and author of the authoritative Pacific Asian Log), Phil Bytheway (author of Ultralight radio-related coulumns in both the DXM and DXN), Guy Atkins (fellow Puyallup DXing fanatic, and the first DXer to have received any TA on a barefoot Ultralight radio on the west coast, snagging 1575-Farda at Grayland in 2008), Tom Rothlisberger (fellow NDB-DXing fanatic and DXpeditioner), Theo from Vancouver, BC (who, when considering the local weather, probably wished that he was in Waikiki with Walt) and yours truly (hopelessly-hooked ocean cliff ULR DXpedition fanatic). and several others (I'm sorry if you were not mentioned). The conversation soon turned into a lively discussion of live Vs. remote DXing, especially concerning the tradeoff of lost sleep Vs. DXing results. The Perseus SDR DXers (with their relatively expensive receivers and cheap Beverage wires) seemed somewhat perplexed at the idea of someone using a $50 Ultralight radio with a $500 FSL antenna. After an interesting discussion about this bizarre subject, a perfect solution was found-- adapt the expensive FSL so that it could be used with the expensive Perseus SDR-- thereby providing the ultimate boost to the (dragging) Ukrainian and Italian economies. The design challenge was eagerly accepted by the two Puyallup DXers (at least by one of them, with the other one chickening out by simply offering to donate a 7 FSL to the project ). As for whether the single-optimized-frequency FSL can really be adapted for broadband Perseus SDR DXing , nobody seemed very optimistic-- but at least the plan gave us a nice excuse to meet together again after the local Hamfair next month to discuss progress (or the lack thereof). 73, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] Luxembourg huge on 1440 KHz
Can you imagine some of your home appliances going nuts consequence of a strong electromagnetic field coming from a high power transmitter right in your backyard? That's what a number of 670 home located in the neighbourhood of the Marnach 1200Kw transmitting facility in Luxembourg are suffering. There even had been cases of leukemia. You may want to read the following article from the newspaper Luxemburger Wort to learn more. As I couldn't find the English version from the archives, here's the Google Translation from the French article which is not too badly translated after all (hopefully that long URL will work): http://translate.google.ca/translate?sl=frtl=enjs=nprev=_thl=frie=UTF-8layout=2eotf=1u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wort.lu%2Fwort%2Fweb%2Ffr%2Fluxembourg%2Farticles%2F2011%2F06%2F153626%2Findex.php As a demonstration of a big transmitting power and with propagation helping, here's a sample of CRI's programming ending a French program, IDing in full fashion and then, into the English program with news about the Canadian-Chinese trade agreement signed last week. 73, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] WFIL-560 DX test Results
As I scan the list of places where DXers heard WFIL's test, I see only one in either the Pacific or Mountain time zones, that being the one in Mojave, California. Considering that the test originated in a location 50 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, that probably shouldn't come as any surprise. In a couple of weeks, when KRPI-1550 tests, the DXers in the Eastern time zone will probably have an equally tough time hearing that one. 73, Rick Dau South Omaha, Nebraska (it's nice to be in the middle of the USA sometimes!) I'm still going over Perseus recordings from the very fine early Feb SSS cx and on Feb 2 at about 1927 CST a 50's type oldies song was noted mixing with the remains of WBZ (back nulled about 25 to 30 dB) and then another old oldie and then I thought the man said K-Dune at the end of something jumbled and into a medical oriented ad and then the gal clearly said Reedsport Medical Clinic at 1931. Finally in the log book after what must've been 100 tries in very good SSS cx during the past decade. I am of the opinion that I should be able to log all stns that run 50 kw ND in the US mainland but still no luck with Cal ESPN on 710 or Cal ESPD on 860.
