Re: [IRCA] 1220 unID w/classical music looping E-W from Omaha
I think Paul is right, the only thing that comes up for Sunday Classics is KJAN. Was trying to figure out them giving the wrong temperature. The station website has forecasts & radar, but doesn't show current temp. Might the wrong temp indicate they are either running an old show? It was 48 or so & they said 35. Tried calling KJAN 1-800-283-5526 & it just gave me the names of the people that work there & it said nobody was available to answer call, but could leave callback # for any of them. I didn't bother. http//:tunein.com when I went there gave description as Classic Hits, normally meaning rock, but think not in this case as I did notice a # of stations using Classics slogan that are classical. 73, George S., MN From: "Paul B. [IRCA] Congratulations to Rob Ross-- 1000 Stations Received on Ultralight Radios
Hello All, Back in December of 2007, in order to express thanks to Colin Newell (of DXer.Ca) for publishing my quirky SRF-59 review, I came up with a strange idea to send out a few free SRF-59 samples to any Canadians that wanted one. The idea was to spread the interest in Ultralight radio DXing north of the border, since it already seemed to have quite a foothold in western Washington state. At the time seven Canadian DXers responded with a request, and seven of the basic analog Ultralights headed north, into the cold Canadian winter. The seven SRF-59 Ultralights ended up in various locations from Victoria, B.C. to London, Ontario, but by far the most successful one was the radio received by Rob Ross, who practically ran it into the ground by receiving over 300 stations with it before the month of January 2008 was over (less than 30 days of usage). At the time ULR DXers were regarded as somewhat fanatical kooks, using tiny pocket radios with no real hope of any serious, long-range DXing success. Rob single-handedly changed that impression by receiving serious DX with his barefoot, $18 SRF-59... including several stations in South America. He was a one-man DXing tornado, stunning both the ULR and table-receiving communities with his accomplishments. Within 30 days he managed to change our reputation from a group of kooks into the hottest new phenomena in AM-DXing, with repercussions that continue to this day. Because of Rob's success, Canada became a hotbed of ULR DXing activity-- and I was delighted to repeat the free-sample offer to Canadians a few months later with the Sony SRF-39FP prison radios-- one of which wound up with another phenomenal Canadian DXer, Allen Willie of Newfoundland. The Canadian connection with ULR DXing has been unique from the very beginning-- and if not for guys like Colin, Rob and Allen, we never would have gotten off of the ground. Rob has been at the forefront of ULR DXing success not only in AM results, but also in Longwave, both in International Broadcast and NDB-DXing. I recently had the pleasure (?) of competing with Rob in chasing Longwave beacons throughout the cold winter (losing, of course, but having a blast in the process!). Anyway, Rob, you have been a Master Ultralight DXer for the past 4 years, and a great inspiration to us all. Congratulations on tracking down station #1000 (an awesome one, at that), and thanks again for your outstanding contributions to our Ultralight Radio community! 73, Gary DeBock, N7EKX Puyallup, WA, USA Ultralight Radio Group Co-Founder ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] WMOX, WQOP? & somebody on 1590
Hi All: I haven't done much with the big magnetic storm. But.. 1010, WMOX, MS, Meridian presumed to be the one here all alone carrying the Jim Bohannan Show here on Thu. 3/8, 2210 EST. They're the only 1010 on Bohannan's station list. Mch wanted here. I heard them once or twice in Port Huron at SS in the late 60s, usually just before KLRA buried them in the CFRB null, but not hear here until now. 1460, WQOP? FL, Jacksonville presumed to be the one w/EWTN pgmming, testimonial promo for EWTN & into EWTN pgm, but if WMCJ is still EWTN it could have been them. The data I can find on the internet is confusing; it is reported that Queen of Peace no longer owns WMCJ & their format changed from EWTN several years ago. So unless someone can give me more definite information that it could have ben WCMJ, I'm going to presume WQOP. 1590 UnID w/sports, sounded like their slogan was, "Your sports radio." Not a sports net that I know; definitely not ESPN or Fox. Jackson? (which remains unheard here despite their frequent use of day power at night). 73 David ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
Re: [IRCA] Fwd: Geomagnetic Storms Possible on March 11-12
While these bursts aren't as strong as the prior one, because they're coming in on top of them, there will be a cumulative effect. I would expect the A and K indices to go up again as a result but probably not as high. Auroral conditions should continue for a few days depending on what happens with the sun going forward. The large sunspot group producing all of this activity is moving away from the center of the sun's earth-facing side and so we can likely expect things to subside starting sometime Tuesday. [IRCA] Last night's auroral fun
We had company last night so I didn't check in to see what was going on. I did have recordings going on 890 ( nothing but WLS even with them nulled, not even the Cuban ) and 1100 ( WTAM mostly with something underneath them with music and talk but too weak to make much sense of although I want to revisit a couple of recordings) and 1180 ( all Cuba, at least 3 echoing ). 1220 here is lost due to a strong local on 1210; similarly 980 and 1000 are lost to the local on 990. If Rob could get Brazil on an ultralight in Ontario, I should have been able to do the same with a 2010 but 1100 didn't appear to make it through, but the noise level remains a problem, and during auroral conditions both the RF and man-made noise are stronger. I'll set up some different channels tonight and see what I find. 150 kW. Clear channel in Brazil. It crushes everything in Newfoundland when we're there. It may be located at a distance, but it is licensed to serve Rio de Janeiro. St. Catherine's was ordered off the air by the court some time ago. Never easily heard here anyway due to a tight pattern. I've always wondered how it got out at all with nearby Cleveland a U-1. Also, a major geomagnetic event caused an auroral surge that soaked up the signals in the north favoring the south. One tell-tale is that local ground wave signals are stronger when regional signals are absorbed into the aurora. I had our local TIS on 910 all alone, all groundwave. WNED 970 in Buffalo was also alone. And I had a weak image from WBEN 930 appear on 660. [IRCA] Re;Radio Globo in Rio
Radio Globo in Rio is indeed on 1220 as I just found out so I guess 1220 is also used for Radio Globo stations in other places in Brazil. I guess it would help if I had a WRTH. [IRCA] KOTZ-720 DX test
Tried for the KOTZ-720 test from Colorado Springs but didn't hear, KDWN and XEDE were all that was in.? I did *TENTATIVELY* log KOTZ-720 from San Jose, CA back in the late 1980's, so I'm sure it is possible, but cx are not now like they were back then, believe me... I did listen to the KOTZ-720 test online though the other night on their website, and captured some neat screenprints of their modulation online during portions of the test on their website and put the screenprints into a Powerpoint package.? If anyone would like a copy, let me know... Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Good News Regarding The KOTZ 720 DX Test
Hmm.. I thought it was around 15 minutes into my recording (which started around 12:51am PST, which would have made it around 1:06am, besides the possibility that the clock in my Zoom H2n could be a minute off). I can't seem to pick anything out of the recording, though. I even listened to most of it again in case I had the wrong time in my mind, but no dice. If it's tough to get KDWN to shut down, would it be possible to reduce their radiation to the southwest by about 140-160 dB during KOTZ's test? ;) Another thing I was thinking .. don't know if this would work, but might it be possible to include some fully-modulated morse code at, say, 7 kHz, along with a fully-modulated continuous tone at 6 kHz? (BTW by fully modulated (it's possible I have the wrong term) I mean the same power goes into that morse or into that continuous tone as is in the on-assigned-frequency carrier.) I was thinking I might have a chance, if the continuous tone could "fool" my PL-606 into thinking there was a carrier there, and the morse would beat with it so I'd hear 1 kHz morse by tuning to, in the previous example, 714 or 726 kHz (getting away from some of KDWN's splatter, also XEEBC/XEX (not sure which, suspect the former) on 730 and KSPN on 710 are usually much weaker signals than KDWN, but KCBS's IBOC could be a problem, though). (Maybe an offset of 5, 6, 7 or 8 kHz would work for the continuous tone, with the morse being somewhere within that range and within about 1.5 kHz of the continuous "carrier".) (It probably wouldn't be possible to switch KOTZ into a mode where their main 720 kHz carrier was shut off and instead they were on 714 or 726 kHz, though.) I did get KBOI, though. Posting a recording will have to wait till at least Wednesday, though, as I have other non-radio things going on the next few days. As for KDWN, this video clip could give you a little idea of what KOTZ needs to punch through. ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaLPsevaRGk And just 40 kHz up from that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICaOz_Nvxeo From: "Paul B. And as for KDWN shutting off, its not that easy to get a 50KW major market signal to just shut down. I think I heard a hint of phone off-hook signal once through heavy KDWN QRM in SoCal, but I'd have to check my recording (which may not happen till Wednesday). Also it would help if somehow some downtime could be arranged at KDWN so those of us in Southern California would have a better chance at logging KOTZ. > > > > > > From: Russ Edmunds >To: a...@nrcdxas.org >Cc: IRCA List >Sent: Saturday, March 10, 2012 5:35 PM >Subject: Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Good News Regarding The KOTZ 720 DX Test > > >It'll take a week at least for the current activity to quiet down. Re: [IRCA] Radio Globo 1220 Brazil
Just curious about R Globo 1220 from Brazil. A website puts this one in a relatively small city about 250 miles west of Sao Paulo called Londrina. There are other Radio Globo stations in other cities and one is on 830 AM. I don't have a WRTH handy so I can't see what its power is but I would think that it isn't a high output station in a remote area of the country. If anyone has that info then I stand corrected if I'm incorrect. How can that signal drop into several receiver locations in the Eastern US from almost 5000 miles away with so many North American Stations occupying this freq including 2 high powers in Cleveland and St.Catherines.? Re: [IRCA] ULR DX.......Station # 1, 000 Logged on Ultralight Radios....1140 Radio Cadena Habana!!
Rob: Congratulation for being the first person in the world to hear 1,000 stations with an ultralight receiver. I only wish John Bryant and Kirk Allen were still us to celebrate your grand accomplishment. Best wishes. Richard. (Listed) ROSS, ONT. ** ULR DXing started for me on Jan/01/2008 when I received a FREE SONY SRF-59 Analog Radio from Gary DeBock as part of his Promotion to drum up some interest in this tiny ULR Radio...Since then numerous Ultralight Radios have been used with the SONY SRF-T615 being the ULR of choice. At least 90 % of the 1,000 Stations heard were logged BAREFOOT, using only the ULR's Internal Ferrite Rod. Several Loops, External Ferrite Rods and a DeBock 7 Inch FSL Antenna were used on occasion to log some stations. TOTAL TIME TAKEN to reach 1,000 Stations was 4 Years and 71 Days. Inspiration to attempt this craziness comes from 3 of my ULR Cronies, and I dedicate the 1,000th Logging to these 3 ULR DXers!! ULR GROUP CO-FOUNDER, Gary DeBock of Puyallup, WASHINGTONfor turning me onto the art of ULR Dxing in the very beginning!! Without his prodding and assistance...I wouldn't be writing this message!! ULR GROUP CO-FOUNDER, The Late John Bryant of Stillwater, OKLAHOMA...who always told me to set Personal Goalsand then laughed when I told him my Goal was to hear 1,000 Stations on a ULR Radio!! I think I laughed too...well Johnny Boy...this one is for you!! Now we know the answer to that question."Can 1,000 Stations be heard on a ULR Radio??" ULR LATIN DXer EXTRAORDINAIRE .The Late Kirk Allen of Ponca City, OKLAHOMA...Kirk you didn't hang around long enough to see this happen, but this one is for you too!! You would have accomplished this feat very soon as wellhad you been given just a little more time.. I would also like to thank my Radio Buddy RICHARD ALLEN of Perry, OKLAHOMAwho is currently sitting at 983 Stations heard on a ULR Radioand will be joining the 1,000 Heard Club very soon!!! His big surge the past few months gave me inspiration to hit the dials hard and finally log # 1,000. Thanks to the Many Dxer's who offered DX Tips, and Station ID assistance along the way. Your valuable input made the trip to 1,000 a little easier!! TOTAL Hours spent DXing to Reach 1,000 ULR Stations...I don't even want to guess!! Lets just say it was a lot!!!
