Walt,

Yes, I noticed it this afternoon. I thought by now it would be gone. In
Canada is it illegal to run an OC without any IDs for days?

In SE. Ohio most of the regulars are here though not as strong as usual.
Certain of the usual pests from the northwest (at least they're northwest of
here) including the WI on 1510 and WAIK, 1590, Galesburg, were noted doing well
between 2000 and 2030.  Also noted WMBD, 1470, Peoria, booming in.  There was
one sign of auroral cs, WFNO, 830, Norco, LA, broadcasting Hornets game in SS
was getting in well. Toronto was doing particularly well.  In fact, one new
logging;

1650 CINA  ON  Mississauga on top here w/mixture of EE & Indian talk, giving
phone #s in the 905 area code during numerous spots.  Generally good sigs &
quite readable.

Re: [IRCA] 1220 unID w/classical music looping E-W from Omaha

2012-03-12 Thread Rick Dau
If both Paul Walker (on this list and NRC's) and Eric Berger (on the ABDX list)
say that it's KJAN, that's good enough for me.  The "Sunday Classics" mention
that I heard was a definite, and the "35 degrees" part, for all I know, could
have been my ears playing tricks on me.  Maybe the announcer said "45", I
dunno.  Not surprised that I got KJAN, as weird as conditions were last night.
I never EVER hear them here after sunset.  Same thing with KFOR-1240 in
Lincoln, which was booming in here at the same time -- normally, KFOR is mostly
absent here at night.  And to top it all off, I tuned to 700 and pointed the
radio south, inspired by Paul Swearingen's logging of Mexico.  And I got a
mixing product of my locals on 590 and 1290 -- which NEVER happens without a
loop attached to my radio!   Bizarre.

I think Paul is right, the only thing that comes up for Sunday Classics is
KJAN. Was trying to figure out them giving the wrong temperature. The station
website has forecasts & radar, but doesn't show current temp. Might the wrong
temp indicate they are either running an old show? It was 48 or so & they said
35.

Tried calling KJAN 1-800-283-5526 & it just gave me the names of the people
that work there & it said nobody was available to answer call, but could leave
callback # for any of them. I didn't bother. http//:tunein.com when I
went there gave description as Classic Hits, normally meaning rock, but think
not in this case as I did notice a # of stations using Classics slogan that are
classical. 73, George S., MN

[IRCA] Au fun to continue

2012-03-12 Thread Dave Hascall
I subscribe to an email alert from Dr. Charles Deehr, from the University
of Alaska - Fairbanks, concerning aurora (ie solar storms). I just
received another alert that says that greater (solar) activity will
continue on March 12 & 13 and by the 14th, "a fast stream from a
significant coronal hole will help bolster continuing auroral activity."

Wow - keep at the dials!

2012-03-12 Thread Chernos Saul

A review of 1220 that I left running while we had company Saturday night has
yielded Portuguese and two Globo IDs. I still think Robert Ross in London ON
takes the cake on this one, hearing it on an ULR in his basement! Whodathunk

Re: [IRCA] Chicago outage from West Michigan

2012-03-12 Thread neilkaz
Here 35 miles NW of Chicago I used my south antenna til a bit past my 0900
recording and then switched over to the west antenna.

Thx for the mention of XEAVR 720 as careful listening around 0900 reveals the
// but the are usually way u/XEDE.

You may wish to check 770 where early during the test Monterrey's Radio Formula
was good // 780. Cuba was also in on 770. 790 had Reloj and WQSV which I
haven't had since WBBM put that IBOC garbage on. I may find more on 790 when I
listen to recordings.

On the west antenna XEREV 770 was good at times and XECSI was good on 750. I
had a brief bit of EE talk come up on 780, but can't be sure whether it was
KKOH or KAZM, but don't need either. Yes..XEDKR was strong at times on west
antenna.

I was unable to positively separate 671 from a very strong 670. 670 was so
strong here on Sat night, that it was noted u/WSCR which is less than 20 miles
away and the same direction.

Hmm..I'll have to check my 1000 recording and see if there's any TP activity
since that was taken on west antenna.

I expect to find more DX when I get a chance to really carefully listen to all
the SS recorded.

[IRCA] Auroral Logs from past couple nights

2012-03-12 Thread David Hochfelder
I did not hear Brazil on 1220 like everyone else did on the East coast. It
remains one of my most wanted and we never heard them in ten years of the
LBI DXpedition. Still, a new Venezuelan and ZNS Bahamas for a new country.
My local on 1540 WDCD is fortunately off air for awhile.

Conditions were very noisy and groundwave seemed enhanced. This might
explain the WXEX logging. I was also chasing an ESPN on 1220. Well, I was
hoping for Brazil actually... The ESPN on 1220 might be WZBK, Keene, NH.

Re: [IRCA] WMOX, WQOP? & somebody on 1590

2012-03-12 Thread David Faulkner
Hi All:

I've been after WMOX for 8 years now, but always way too much CRFB/WINS.  The
EWTN on 1460 had faded under a bunch of SS stations by 2100.

Last night was really weird here.  Had the Memphis 680 all alone on the
channel.  They are normally a very hard logging here.  Has an UnID SS all alone
on 1070 w/mx.  Only one new logging;

850 WFTL, FL, West Palm Beach 3/11/12, 2252-2301 w/talk, local spots for
businesses in Boca Raton & Ft. Lauderdale, ID, into network nx, but I'm not
sure whose as they were mixing w/WRUF, WPTB, & an UnID gospel stn.

[IRCA] ULR DX......3 NEW Stations during last night's Aurora!!!!!

2012-03-12 Thread Robert Ross
Hi Guys:

Welllast night's Auroral conditions were some of the weirdest
conditions I've experienced in many DX Seasons!! The evening started out at
Sunset with Semi-Locals blasting in but little heard past that. Then around
2000 edt I noticed that I was hearing LONG Stuff and everything else had faded
out...including the 50 KW Blowtorches...Nothing from Detroit, Cleveland,
Pittsburgh. New York, Chicago etc was being heard at all!!! However...while all
of this was happening, I had SOLID Local Like reception of a 1 KW Graveyarder
from New Smyrna Beach, FLORIDA @ a distance of 960 Miles!! This was my first
Florida Graveyarder in over 35 Years of DXing!! This station was heard
Continually, with No Fading for almost 2 Hours!!! Usually I'm lucky to get a 10
Second Fade up from a Graveyarderthis was in for 2 hours!! I also had a
Relog from Miami on 910 that was heard for a while, when the entire Band was
dead except for the 2 Florida Stations.

Then around est, the band opened up to SOUTH AMERICA and went crazy!!
I logged lots of stuff that was just IN/OUT and mixing with other Spanish
Stations, making it hard to pull out details, but there was a definite good
opening to South America going on!! Venezuela seemed to be favoured here.

As a result I logged 2 New Stations from Venezuela, along with a 3rd New One
from Florida.

RADIO USED...SONY SRF-T615 Ultralight BAREFOOT

ULR LOG TOTALS are now..1003 Stations Heard

[IRCA] Tentative Log- XELT 920 R. Maria,

2012-03-12 Thread John Cereghin
During the auroral conditions last night, I had a Spanish station on
920 around 2300 playing light pops. ID mentioned "R. Mira(?)" which
may have been "R. Maria" (yes, my Spanish is lousy), the closest match
I can find in my 2010 WRTH. It may be XELT, R. Maria in Tlaquepaque,
near Guadalajara. Listed at 10kw so possible, especially with all the
Latin activity of the last few nights, but wasn't able to check the
streaming audio to verify. Heard barefoot on my PL-380.

Last night was one of the most unusual conditions I've noted in 35
years of DXing. WBZ Boston was nowhere to be found and it is usually
a blowtorch here in Delaware. WJR also was "out to lunch".

Anything at a range of between 200 to 300 miles south is "lost"( High power
Oregonians)
New signals in tonight: 1120 KSJZ San Martin Ca with Vietnamese( as the only
listed Asian) on 150 night watts.
1400 KVTO Berkeley Ca with an oriental talk show on 1KW night power.
All semi locals have steady ground waves (no backgrounders audible)
670 KBOI has all but vanished (off air?)
750 in NV is in clear and steady with their classic country on a quarter Kw (I
should call them to let them know)
Digital noise on some vacant freqs here is preventing me from finding more.

Thanks Dennis. I went looking for Gene Burns, and I found he is working
at 910-Oakland now. No sign of anywhere Ray is working though.
