[IRCA] CFWH 570 Whilehorse, Yukon

2012-07-10 Thread Patrick Martin
I just got an e mail from Dan Sys of BC that CFWH 570 has their FM now
turned on and 570 is going dark August 31st, 2012. I am sorry to hear
this as CFWH has been a beacon for years when DX conditions were good to
the North in the Winter. Logged here several times. I have a very nice
folding QSL card from CFWH too. There are no other easy (relative
term) Yukon stations to hear. CKRW 610 1 KW is much tougher and the only
other Yukon station with any power is Dawson City on 560, with 400
watts.

[IRCA] Alberta DUs for 10 July 2012

2012-07-10 Thread Nigel Pimblett

Quite an interesting DU morning here, at least in terms of carriers.

The following were noted in a scan at 1100:

738,819,891,1035,1098,1116,1206,1215,1278,1314,1323,1413,1458,1476,1503,1512,1539,1548,1566,1575,1584,1593
(2 carriers),1602,1611,1665,1674,1701(2 carriers)

A couple of them even reached audio level:
1503 -few words through the splatter by woman at 1102 Pretty certain it
was English but too much splatter to be 100% sure.
1584 - the faintest of audio traces. Carrier was slightly off freq at
1884.03 or so.

Rather unusually, my results seemed to match up pretty well with what
Dennis observed.

Extreme static from a local storm made hearing things difficult, but
conditions were very poor also. Nothing was heard yesterday, today 1116
very poor DU audio at 1204 utc and 567 occasional very poor DU audio
1209 utc. Lots of hets over the whole band.

1725 GA PNG beacon, poor/weak (no audio filter needed) 1153 utc.

[IRCA] 19th Annual Madison-Milwaukee DX Get-together 8/18/12

2012-07-10 Thread DXERak

It's time again for the Madison-Milwaukee Get-together for DXers and Radio
Enthusiasts! This popular DX event has been held on the third Saturday in
August every year since 1994.The purpose from the beginning has been to
promote camaraderie among all DXers and radio hobbyists-- making new friends
and renewing old friendships. This is an all-band event, and brings
together a diverse group of hobbyists who have one thing in common-- a love of
radio.

The 19th annual Madison-Milwaukee DX Get-together returns to Madison this
year after two highly successful gatherings in Oak Creek (suburban
Milwaukee) WI over the past two years:

WHEN: Saturday, August 18, 2012 1:00 PM until approximately 11 PM (come
when you can and leave when you must)

WHERE: 3358 Ridgeway Avenue Madison, Wisconsin

HOSTS: Bill and Nina Dvorak

We have another great day of socializing and radio activities lined up this
year, with some fine demonstrations planned (and of course the annual
photo-- bring along your camera). The annual dinner (participation optional)
will once again be held at the Esquire Club. The program immediately
following dinner includes door prizes and other surprises. An evening session
including coffee, cake and of course conversation follows back at Bill and
Nina's.

For more details about this event, directions, information on
accommodations, or the answer to any event-related question, please e-mail Bill

off-list at _dxerak@aol.com_ (mailto:dxe...@aol.com) (please include Madison
DX
GTG in the subject line), and we will e-mail you an invitation and
information sheet.

Over the years interest in and attendance for the GTG has grown, and once
again this year we expect in excess of 30 DXers to attend. We hope that you
will come and promise that you will have a great time if you do. Many of
your fellow IRCA'ers will be among those attending-- won't you come join
them?

Hope to see you in Madison on August 18!

Thanks for the tip Todd. I just had a look to the KTCN directional
pattern on the FCC website and as expected, it is very narrow. So much
power for such a narrow beam always seems like a waste of watts!

Indeed, this site must be impressive to look at. One day maybe...
Meanwhile, I can look at it on Google map:

[IRCA] New Canadian info

2012-07-10 Thread Patrick Martin
From Dan Sys in BC:

Bell Media has applied to convert CKGM 690 Montreal (still operating on
990 at the moment) from English Sports to French Sports. This move
became necessary for Bell so they could hold on to all of their Montreal
properties when if the Astral takeover is approved:
http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2012/2012-370.htm#2

Here*s a newspaper story from todays Montreal Gazette that sheds a bit
more light on the situation:
http://www.montrealgazette.com/life/Montreal+Radio+become+French+sports+station/6911618/story.html

Also in Montreal Tietolman Tetrault Pancholy Media has applied for an
English language News-Talk station on 600 (10KW/5KW). These guys
applied for one last year on 940, but it was rejected because of
frequency issues (4 applications.3 frequencies available).  At the
time the CRTC did invite them to apply again utilizing a different
frequency. Approval of this application seems almost guaranteed:
http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2012/2012-370.htm#5

Someone has applied to revive the dark CHSC 1220 in Saint Catharines,
Ontario with 10,000 watts fulltime utilizing the transmitting facilities
from the former CHSC. The format will be 88% English language AC-Oldies
and 12% Multilingual:
 http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2012/2012-370.htm#14

The CBC has applied to flip CFYK 1340 in Yellowknife to FM:
http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2012/2012-370.htm#15

Lots of changes coming down the pike from up North.
