Strong signal earlier (again on 1720 KHz then dropping down to 1710),
but now they seem to be transmitting a strong open carrier. I'm no
longer hearing audio at 0640 UTC.

[IRCA] full wave BCB dipole?

2012-12-22 Thread Bob Young

Has anyone ever experimented with a full wave BCB dipole? I just got a 980 ft
dipole done today with ladder line as a lead in, it is from 30-60 ft in the
air. This was a MAJOR undertaking as it runs through the woods behind my
father's home. I couldn't have gotten it done without help. It is oriented
roughly N-S. I don't notice much difference in signal strength near the top of
the band as would be expected but down in the bottom I am getting much more
signal. Tonight doesn't seem to be a very good night for low band TA's however.
If anyone's interested I'll post some results over the next few weeks. I've
always wanted to build a ridiculous antenna and there is just enough room in
the woods behind his house where I am staying now. I may build another one for
phasing purposes.

Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 12-21

2012-12-22 Thread d1028gary

Hi Stephen,

<<< Was wondering ... what's with the lack of the Tecsuns and using an
older-model
FSL in your recent home loggings? Did the weather on the cliff really do your
PL-380 and FSL in THAT bad? Or are they being used for other projects? >>>

Well, the vicious weather on the Oregon cliff last month did temporarily knock
out both the newer-model 8" FSL and 7.5" loopstick PL-380, but they were both
restored the same day (November 12th). The reason for using the back up gear
for TP-DXing recently is because we frequently have rainy weather here in
western Washington this time of year, and it's a hassle to set up the regular
equipment in the back yard under such conditions. It's much easier to grab the
backup gear hanging around the bedroom, and conveniently log TP's in dry
comfort (although this probably reduces Asian signal strength a little).

Of course, if some high-priority TP-DX were to show up, the rejuvenated 2012
FSL and hot-rodded PL-380 would once again be subjected to the "drench test" in
the back yard.

Hello All,

I'm in full agreement with the comments by Bill and Walt-- this morning was
easily the best TP-DX morning of the entire month. I first tuned in at 1410 and
found the band full of strong signals from Japan, Korea and China... similar to
a peak-season morning in mid-October. The Japanese on 594, 693, 747, 828, 1287
and 1503 were vibrant, as were the Koreans on 972, 1053, 1134 and 1566. Even
1323 kHz was managing a Chinese signal here, the first time that has ever
happened with Ultralight radios. Unfortunately I had no time to continue the
DXing effort until around 1530, when a lot of the best signals had dropped down
into the noise. From 1530-1550 the Koreans on 972 and 1566 were still strong,
and 1575-VOA was fading in and out of the noise with good signals. Despite the
great DX earlier around 1410 UTC I was only able to record a couple of vibrant
signals during the later (less impressive) session. All the DX was heard

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 12-22

2012-12-22 Thread d1028gary

Hello All,

Unfortunately yesterday's exceptional TP-DXing conditions didn't continue
through this morning, but there were still some potent Asian signals from
several Korean big guns. The weaker Chinese and Japanese stations stayed down
in the noise during the west coast sunrise period, although several of them
were around during the Asian sunset period from 1000-1100 UTC (which generally
had better propagation). 1566-HLAZ was strong with its Korean Christian program
around 1015, and 972-HLCA had its best signal of the month around 1440 with its
late-night easy listening music. Other than occasional good signals from
594-JOAK, 657-Pyongyang, 747-JOIB, 774-JOUB, 828-JOBB and 1134-KBS the sunrise
enhancement session didn't deliver very much else, and yesterday's second-tier
signals on 558, 738, 936, 1017, 1035, 1044, 1323, 1377, 1503 and 1593 were long
gone. Of course, it's probably better to be thankful for whatever TP's still
show up during the "December Doldrums," especially in a lean!
  solar year.

972 HLCA Dangjin, S. Korea Excellent EZL music program

[IRCA] 1720 & 1710 Khz "The Big Q" this morning

2012-12-22 Thread Tim Tromp
1710 & 1720 SDR catches early this morning:

Came on at 0525z as near as I can tell. Radio Celestial from the Bronx
was annoyingly strong here last night, about 25Hz or so to the high side
of 1710.

1710 KHz:

0525z: Rick Nelson "Garden Party"
0527z: Big Q ID
0528z: Announcer describing switching from digital to analog processing
equipment for a better quality AM sound, new antenna array, etc. with
clever audio voice-overs tossed in.
0529z: Announcer "Midnight Man" talking up the GE Superadio, signal
abruptly dropped giving way to Radio Celestial again, technical issue I
assume.

1720 KHz:

0808z: Noted back again, but on 1720, with massive AM carrier and high
pitched test tones, and unobstructed signal thanks to the clear channel.
I bet this would have been widely heard on this frequency if people had
known to listen. Christmas oldies, slick jingles, and 20 Khz wide
audio.

These are worth a listen if you haven't heard the station before:

[IRCA] Quoddy House DXpedition - Dec. 1 - 8, 2012

2012-12-22 Thread Bill Whitacre
Results from a DXpedition to Quoddy House, near Lubec, Maine, from December 1 -
8 can be found here:

Best results were found with an extended DKAZ antenna pointing at 60 deg with
Rt = 820 Ohms. After freezing my fingers and wearing out my hips oh how I long
for a remotely variable Rt!

No Alaska logging this year. ;-) ... but I was surprised to find a few TP
receptions that produced audio and came in better on the 60 deg antenna than
one I had up briefly pointing 330 deg -- 'right at' Asia! Must have something
to do with the auroral donut, time of year and sunspot cycle.

Anyway, my logs are presented as sound samples rather than written text.
