Re: [IRCA] Was KOLM 1520 MN on day power, last night?

2012-12-26 Thread Dave Hascall
Thanks to John Reiger, Bruce Conti, KAZ and everyone else who confirmed
that KOLM was probably my station. Counted based upon a few reports that
they were blasting in, that morning. New to both logs. Also
had tentative logging of Plum Springs, KY on 1450 and I'm decidedly not a
GY DX'er. Lol.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] 486kHz transmission

2012-12-26 Thread Brett Saylor
Now that I listen to the clip again, I hear the mention of Fessenden after
the scripture reading. I've also been told that this is an experimentally
licensed 600 meter amateur station from WA1ZMS. I'd like to find out what
power it was using.

Here's a clip of the entire 8 minute Perseus recording if anyone is
interested:

There are 25 stations holding experimental licenses from the FCC to transmit in the 480-490KHz band. It's probably WG2XFQ, authorized to use regular
AM and Morse at 20 watts ERP on frequencies between 483 and 510KHz. The name on the experimental license matches the name on the WA1ZMS amateur
license, and the cited location (Forest, Virginia) matches a 144MHz beacon known to be operated by WA1ZMS.

It should be noted a recent international conference agreed to allocate the 472-479KHz band for regular (non-experimental) use by amateurs. The
allocation is effective January 1st, although it will take more time for the FCC to add the band to their regulations.

There are other amateurs authorized to transmit in the 480-490KHz band:

WE2XGR - licensed for 460-480KHz, CW, single-sideband, RTTY, and some kind of subcarrier telegraphy at 1,000 watts ERP. Eight sites are listed (which
probably means eight different amateurs are allowed to transmit under the same license); the licensee name & one of the sites matches amateur station
K2ORS. Sites are in New England and upstate NY.

WG2XJM - licensed for 460-480KHz, CW & PSK31 at 100 watts ERP from Saegertown,
Pennsylvania. Licensee name matches amateur station NO3M.

WG2XKA - licensed for 460-490KHz, CW, RTTY and PSK31 at 1 watt ERP from
Rutland, Vermont. Licensee name matches amateur station WA3ETD.

WG2XCT - licensed for 495-510KHz. CW, RTTY and PSK31 at 5 watts ERP from
Spartanburg, South Carolina. Licensee name matches amateur station N4LTA.

===

There are also a few commercial firms authorized to operate experimental
transmissions in this area:

WE2XSR - Boeing is authorized to transmit unmodulated signals in the 435-510KHz
band at 50 watts from two sites in Seattle.
WF2XMG - Boeing is authorized to transmit unmodulated signals at 50 watts on any frequency below 100MHz from sites in Portland, Oregon; Seattle; and
Everett, Washington; on any frequency below 50MHz from Palmdale, California and Moses Lake, Washington; on any frequency below 74.6MHz from San
Antonio, Texas; and any frequency below 1MHz from Tukwila, Washington.

WG2XFE - Medtronic is authorized to transmit on-off-keyed telemetry at 51.4 nanowatts from sites in Scottsdale, Arizona; Jackson, Mississippi;
Louisville, Kentucky; and Nashville, Tennessee. Seems to me you wouldn't need a license for such low powers! These appear to be for medical
telemetry, with the transmitters implanted in patients -- and a special condition on the WG2XFE license requiring Medtronic to retrieve the
transmitters after the experiments are complete!

WE2XVO - LBA Technology is authorized to transmit unmodulated signals in the
435-495KHz band at 10 watts from mobile sites near Pactolus, North Carolina.

WA2XRM - RW Systems is authorized to transmit Morse & FSK signals at 100 watts
ERP on 480KHz from a site in Colorado Springs.

[IRCA] Led Zeppelin on 1340 ?

2012-12-26 Thread Niel Wolfish
Had a station playing "All My Love" (from 1979) and "D'yer Mak'er" (from 1972)
by Led Zeppelin at 2:04 p.m. this afternoon on 1340.  Heard on car radio. If I
hear anything on 1340 it is usually WLVL-Lockport NY.  Did not see anything
that would fit, such as a 1340 station that is simulcasting an FM station.
Maybe somebody has changed formats?

Conditions were already pretty good by this time, as I was hearing 1450-CHOU
Montreal at this time.

[IRCA] Radio Heritage End of Year Donation

2012-12-26 Thread Radio Heritage Mail

December 27 2012

Happy Holidays!

We hope you've enjoyed a safe and happy Christmas with family and
friends, and as the end of 2012 approaches, and if you've enjoyed our
radio history features and information at www.radioheritage.com
during the year, ask if you'll consider making a small donation
towards meeting our our final operating costs for the year?

Our shortfall for the last 4 months of 2012 to December 31 is
$4,740.37 and if 190 people will donate $25 each, this will fully
clear those bills and let us start 2013 afresh.

You can read much more about what we do to keep radio memories safe
at www.radioheritage.net/story277.asp and some of our success stories
in 2012. You might be surprised at how many different aspects of
radio history we cover, and the many radio station guides we now
offer for free community use.

We've secured 34% of the budget for the last 4 months, and could do
with a little help from our friends to cover the rest... and $25 from
190 good people will help us achieve this.

Like any household, we have regular outgoings just to stay above
water and these come to about $400 a week, securing our office space,
storage, insurance [our premiums have almost doubled this past year],
electricity, internet connections, stationery, computer repairs [we
had a total melt down of a PC in early December and an unexpected
bill!], library additions and all the other little things that add up
over the year...

We pay our volunteers nothing, despite all the good work they do, and
we've asked radio stations to contribute [but they rarely do], and
will again be trying to find some commercial sponsors in 2013 to
reduce the burden on people like you who give so generously to
support this non-profit educational and history resource and make it
available for free to the community.

Users of our website have increased a lot during the year, with
almost 20,000 Australians alone now visiting us, along with thousands
more from the USA, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom and India,
so if just 190 of you can find $25 at this time of year, we will all
be very grateful.

You can use the Paypal donate button on any page at
www.radioheritage.com and all donations received before January 31
2013 go into the draw to win over $240 worth of fabulous books, with
existing donors who can help us a little more also qualifying for the
draw of a free World Radio TV Handbook 2013 shipped worldwide.

Thanks for considering us at this busy time of the year, and for
staying with us over the years, we hope you'll join us again in 2013
and enjoy more new features, stories, memories and radio history
audio, images and collections and, of course, our very popular free
radio station guides.

So, again, we have to find $4740.37 to clear the final bills for the
year, and if you can find $25 as one of 190 good friends this week,
we'll be very grateful, enter you in the draw to win $240 worth of
donated great reading, and do our very best to find some commercial
sponsors in 2013 to reduce the need to make these sorts of requests.

Of course, all donors are acknowledged on our Roll of Honor and as a
registered non-profit, we file annual financial and other reports
with our government charities regulator. Full contact details are at
the bottom of every page of our website www.radioheritage.com.

Warm wishes
Radio Heritage Foundation
