Hi Todd and all! Long time and no DX till tonight. Saw your post Todd and gave
it a try before going to bed. Using my trusty DX- 388 and Q- Stick antenna I
believe I heard CKWW 580. Heard station playing numerous oldies...Cry Like A
Baby, Hitching A Ride with a poor to somewhat fair signal but never heard ID.

Re: [IRCA] [ABDX] 1030 KDUN Oregon heard in Michigan during SSS tonight

2013-01-05 Thread neilkaz
Great job, Tim !! Early Jan SSS can be really good. Unfortunately, I got home
just a few minutes too late to hook up my Double KAZ array for 0100 recordings.
I managed 0115 as West coast CA stuff switches then, but things weren't
impressive other than KFSG 1690 blasting atop Disney. 0200 (well past SSS of
course) recording wasn't nearly as shockingly good as a couple days ago.

I don't think KDUN gets out that well to the east (I think some mountain
blockage). During the great SSS of early Feb last year I finally logged them
for my one and only time.
Look for Tijuana's La Tremenda on 1030 as I think they're running day power at
night again.

Your Phased BOGs worked off the back end unterminated have a more southerly
pattern than the Double KAZ antennas I've been using for a year which aim more
W/WNW, How stable and broadbanded is your phase null? For example, when WBZ is
phased out, is WHAM greatly reduced as well, or just somewhat reduced so that a
significant retweaking of the phaser is needed?

What state do you still need to complete 48? I'm sure I can offer some
suggestions. 73 KAZ Barrington IL

Long sought after 1030 KDUN was finally heard tonight during SSS at 0100
UTC while live DXing with the SDR. When eliminating WBZ I usually have
trouble here with WQSE. Tonight the pest was XEQR which finally faded
just before TOH leaving the frequency relatively open for KDUN's TOH ID
to bubble up just at the right moment: "The most powerful voice on the
Oregon coast, this is K-D-U-N, Reedsport." and then into possible FOX
News and soon gone again. I think I caught them just before their
scheduled pattern change. Oregon #1 and state #47!

1180 KOFI Montana was also logged here tonight for the first time at
0006 UTC, mixing with dominant WJNT.

[IRCA] 1310 WDTW MI Dearborn silent

2013-01-05 Thread Chernos Saul

I hear through the grapevine that 1310 WDTW MI Dearborn went silent on New
Year's Eve. Clear
Channel has donated the license to Minority Media and Telecommunications
Council
and the facilities will be dismantled. One less station in the mess on
1310, particularly for those of you close-by.

Apparently this is not a new country for me, as I QSL'd Radio Farda 1575
a few years ago and according to the info, both 1575 & 1539 are the same
tx site in UAE.
But I am still very pleased with this.

[IRCA] OT UHF Yagis

2013-01-05 Thread Patrick Martin
I know several DXers also are heavily into TV/FM DX, since I am also not
a member of the WTFDA, I thought maybe I could post a question here that
is a bit off topic.

I live on the Northern Oregon Coast as many of you know and I am trying
to receive some translators 25-30 miles away (Gray's River WA). Some
people around here can get them, but I have a hill in the way. All 5 of
the UHF translators are digital now. ERP of 500-1200 watts. I used to
get them snowy in analog, but now I get none of them strong enough to
lock. The strongest one (38) I can get on the meter 18-28% and the
signal bouncing around and it is not strong enough to lock. Right now I
am using a 91XG Yagi I bought from Solid Signal and a 30DB Channel
Master booster. Is there something better I could buy that would give me
more gain? I have read on the internet about Corner Reflectors and
Bowtie antennas, but I have no idea what would be the best. Could buy
another 91XG and stack the two, but I am not sure if the extra gain
would be any better. If that hill wasn't in the way, I am sure I would
get the signal. Any suggestions? I cannot really raise the antenna, as
the hill is too high to get around, and our wind would take the antenna
down. It sits at 15 fet above the ground. The TV Fool site says at my
QTH, the signal is knife edge. Thanks.

Re: [IRCA] OT UHF Yagis

2013-01-05 Thread Karl Zuk
Hi Pat:

Highly recommended is the Channel Master 8 bay bow tie. It has a lot of gain.
it is light with a low wind profile. It is broader than a Yagi and not
susceptible to fading. It's bandwidth is appropriate down to Channel 7. Highly
recommended. It's what I use. Use the pre-amp and some good co-ax. Very most
important: Find good height, keep trees and brush out of your pick-up path, and
search for a sweet spot. UHF is really spotty and unpredictable. You have
to walk around, antenna in hand, and find the spot where your signal is
hottest. Be in touch! Karl
