2013-01-08 Thread David Faulkner
Hi All:

They were kind of a pest down here, and with WDOD already gone

Still, I recall when they were, as WKHM, Detroit's first full-time rocker.
They retained many fans even after CKLW took over that market. As "Keener 13,"
WKNR, I used to listen to them occasionally in Port Huron. 1310 was even more
of a mess then because of 50 kw CFGM in Richmond Hill, ON (now on 640).

Re: [IRCA] 1310 WDTW MI Dearborn silent

2013-01-08 Thread Chernos Saul

I'm not able to DX much on 1310 here in Toronto with 1320 adjacent and huhge
noise downtown. Ottawa seems to hog the channel anyhow so any fun for me will
wait till next week's visit to Burnt River ON DX site. I'll aim a wire straight
at Dearborn and see what I pull in!

But I am curious - has anyone within WDTW's former shadow tried to mine 1310
for DX? Who knows how long this opportunity will last. WNED in Buffalko NY was
only off one month...

2013-01-08 Thread Patrick Martin
Yes, I realize that India has been logged from NFD and the Queen
Charlottes, but I wonder if anyone logged it from Grayland WA? Here in
the NW, India is very rare. But the early 90s were amazing with logs
from India (864), Bangladesh (558) and Nepal (792 & 576). These loggings
were done with a EWE antenna, not a beverage. But Dxing on the OR coast
as many years as I have (45+), I feel that the early 90s here were very
unusual and being at the right place at the right time and using a top
of the line receiver (Drake R8 at the time), with a good ECSS mode.
Everything just came together. Oh course having a very low noise level
makes all of the difference in the world too.

Other weakly visible carriers on 1314 1395 1485, with stronger ones on 1539
and 1548. All on Eu wire around 1830-1845 ut. However 1575 is well above
the rest and at audio producing levels much of the time.

As other have noted, signals were quite good last night. 1215 as expected
was very listenable much of the evening.

An experienced 160 operator, VE5UA, who lives about 150 km NE of me said
that 160m to Europe was about as good as he has ever experienced and he
worked dozens of Europeans both last night and also some in the morning via
short path. He has a 4 sq so can determine the direction.

I made some spectrum recordings last night around 0400 ut that included 160
so will have to review those and see what else was noteworthy.

Perhaps tonite will be another good opening.

Re: [IRCA] India on 1071

2013-01-08 Thread Guy Atkins
Hi Patrick,

If I recall, your 1992 logging of 864 Shillong (leading to your prized QSL)
was in September, correct? It was less than a month after that I had a
"what else could it be?" probable logging on 864 while on a solo DXpedition
to Midway Beach (just a half mile south of Grayland).

In the early 1990s I was heavily into tropical bands DXing and had become
very familiar with All India Radio outlets on 60 meters. I remember that
the signal I was hearing on 864, past local SR, sounded very much like
Hindi or Urdu, and the music was a dead ringer for the subcontinental
flutes & tabla I often heard on AIR stations on the 60 meter band.

I never caught an ID, but I was encouraged by the music and language
matching, and of course your catch a month earlier added fuel to the fire.

The antenna on that trip would have been a short, ungrounded Beverage
strung out over tall dune grass.

Thank you Walter -- back and forth between the radio and the TV news.

I had very successful reception hanging off my balcony last night --
So I thought, why not hook one of my my lo-band HF whips to my
Eton E1 -- and so far, NO noise to speak of.

Should try and fire up a Wellbrook in a different config -

Have not been using the ALA100's because they have been

[IRCA] WMOV 1360 Format Change

2013-01-08 Thread David Faulkner
Hi All:

WMOV, 1360, WV, Ravenswood now has flea-powered FM partner on 106.5. WMOV
noted as Iding, "Oldies 106.5, WMOV, Ravenswood." Still has CBS news, but
appears to have dropped all other talk programming & running satellite oldies
from a programmer I haven't identified. I know it's not Timeless Classics,
"Good times & great oldies," or any other format I'm familiar wiith. Runs lots
of national spots, but nothing local. Still having some trouble with timing in

They are running the Jones Radio Networks Classic Hits Satelitte Feed. JJ
Mckay, Ted The Bear Richards and crew.

The new format came about in the mid to late Summer of last year when a new

purchase it.

According to Seven Ranges Radio Engineer Tom Taggart, the lease has already
been cancelled. The new operator is out.

[IRCA] Alberta TPs/TAs for 8 Jan 2013

2013-01-08 Thread Nigel Pimblett
I had to head to work well before sunrise, but left things running
when I left this morning. Given the TA reception of late, I left the
antenna looking north rather than west. Not a lot of audio, but
heard 2 signals on 1575, one quite good at times, and bits of audio on
1593, 1539, and 1422. I suspect some or all of these were most likely
midddle east signals, as in previous years I've heard Farda on 1575 in
the mornings several times.Peak audio was in the 1505-1515 period, a
few minutes prior to local sunrise.

[IRCA] TA's

2013-01-08 Thread cafe-swl

I think they faded early tonight, yea?

I am using Ham Radio deluxe with my ICOM 703 (which
is a pretty sweet receiver on all bands...)

Is a cinch to remote it anywhere - all you need is the
broadband -- I think it is also possible to
connect it over a phone line - but that is majorly
old school and somewhat slow - especially for
the audio feed...

What's your primary wire down there in Fairfield? A Wellbrook?
You should set one of your vehicles up for wheeling down
to Clover Point - I was down there on the weekend doing some
Ham radio and it was pretty darn quiet.

There is a plan afoot to put a remote on the roof of the Royal
- just need to check the noise levels there -- would be a good
test bed for remote radio.

[IRCA] Alberta TAs

2013-01-08 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Not pounding signals by any means, but some fairly steady audio tonight
on several freqs. Absolute on 1215 is the best at the moment, with
Germany in on 1269 and 1422, along with Radio Maria from Holland on 675,
the UK on 693, and Finland cutting through the IBOC at times on 963. A
bit earlier was hearing presumed Estonia on 1035. Certainly an
interesting evening anyhow.

[IRCA] KFKA 1310 CO on day power? etc etc

2013-01-08 Thread neilkaz
KFKA 1310 is ripping up WIBA here in IL on my W/WNW antenna. I can get them in
well during the best SSS cx, but nothing like this ever noted at night. I
suspect that they didn't switch to night rig. Since building an endfire array
of two Double KAZ Antennas, my DX has improved due mainly to more narrow
beamwidth. I've recently pulled KYUL and even KLIX out from under WIBA at
night, but never had KFKA close to this good.

I have to also question the night pattern of KRPI 1550 WA and whether KRKE 1550
NM is dropping all the way down to 27w as both are showing up at night now
often mixing with pesty KYAL.
KRPI is not an uncommon SSS visitor and I often hear them switch pattern and
drop out. KRPI only has a small back lobe this way at night.

1480 is often dominated by KRAE WY which is new for me this season. Are they
using 72w night power?

1440 KRDZ is in about half the time o/u WROK/others. A frequent SSS visitor
that previously dropped out when they'd switch and was rarely able to be heard
here at night.

After hundreds of times trying for KLFE 1590 from Seattle for more than a
decade, I now have quite a few Freedom 1590 slogans and full ID's recorded.

1680 is interesting at night as KNTS from Seattle now often dominates over IA
TIS's with KRJO the 3rd station on the channel. Little KGED from Fresno is
noted once they switch power and nothing at all from east of me ever noted.

1690 has Disney atop KFSG much of the time although now KFSG can dominate even
with 1 kw. Semi-local WVON is a distant 3rd and if I want to hear Greek mx from
Toronto dominate I have to switch to the truck radio.

I caught a new one tonight on 1550 with a La Missionera slogan at 1900 CST with
KYAL in a lull. This is KXEX from Fresno and still on day power as was KGED
1680 also noted. I've been noted some SS rlg there and finally IDed it. No
trace of CBEF or WDLR ever noted unless I use the truck rx and its omni whip.

I logged KCLK 1430 from WA during Halloween's super SSS cx with ID on the hour
and then gone as switched, but with the array I've noted a couple weak ID's
from them. Once again, I've seen no reports of them running day power at night.

Hopefully some detailed listening to Perseus recordings yield some more from
tonight as cx were decent.

73 KAZ Barrington IL..Perseus and 2 element endfire Double KAZ array at 285 deg.

Re: [IRCA] India on 1071

2013-01-08 Thread Patrick Martin
Guy,

I always get more excited when I see an outstanding catch from someone's
backyard. I know many catches would never be logged here, but the OR/WA
coasts have pulled in a lot of very rare catches.
I think I remember, now that you mentioned it, your tentative logging
of 864 on the WA Coast. I could not remember if India was logged by
anyone else. To be honest, I did not really know for sure what my catch
was, except maybe? India, until John Bryant played my tape to his
students and one student from that area of NE India IDed the language
and the station. But again, I think a lot of the DX was being at the
right place at the right time. Except for a couple times in the late 90s
when I also heard AIR 1566, I have not heard anymore Indians on MW here.
Thanks for the reply.

73,

Patrick

[IRCA] 963 coming in very nicely!

2013-01-08 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Very nice reception of 963 at 06:02. Darn, but I missed the TOH for an ID.
Singing by a female. Language unknown. Are we all certain that it is
Finland? I see that it should be Radio 86 in Lithuanian. Style of the
music, I suppose, matches. 1215 is also present, but really comes and
goes. Presumably Absolute Radio. Otherwise, I'm not seeing any other MW
TA activity at this late hour. 73,Walt Salmaniw, Victoria, BC
