[IRCA] DISCUSSION OF DAILY SOLAR SPACE AND GEOMAGNETIC WEATHER

2013-01-30 Thread Thomas F Giella NZ4O

DISCUSSION OF DAILY SOLAR SPACE AND GEOMAGNETIC WEATHER-

Solar activity is moderate as far as the emergence of the number of new
sunspot groups. Currently there are 6 numbered and 2 new un-numbered sunspot
groups.

Solar activity is very low (0 solar flares) as far as the number of new
solar flares and their magnitude. The largest solar flare in the past 24
hour period was a very small B2.

The daily sunspot number (SSN) has languished below 100 or higher for 14
consecutive days, currently at 63.

The geomagnetic field had been quiet for 3 consecutive days with the Kp
(planetary) index in the 0-2 range. The following are the 24 hour 3 hour Kp
(planetary) intervals 10101000.

The Dst ranged between -19 and -3.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 1-30

2013-01-30 Thread d1028gary

Hello All,

Despite some promising carriers around 1410 UTC (on 594, 828 and 972), mediocre
audio from several Asian big guns was finally the only sign of TP life this
morning. During a lackluster sunrise enhancement 972-HLCA came up to fair audio
around 1535, 1566-HLAZ managed poor-fair audio at 1540, and 1575-VOA came up to
fair audio at 1530. Despite improving solar conditions the band still seems to
be stuck in the depressed mode.

Re: [IRCA] Monster TP Signals in a Lean Solar Year

2013-01-30 Thread d1028gary

Thanks for your impressions, Walt. Yes, this TP season seems unusual by
continuing well into January, as opposed to the previous couple of years when
things were pretty much wrapped up in mid-November. Some of the Asian signals
in December and January have been very impressive, as well.

The strangest aspect here was the general drop-off in Japanese signals during
this recent season, combined with the overall boost in the Korean signals.
972-HLCA, the 1053-Jammer and 1566-HLAZ have really become potent here this
season, with signals significantly better than their levels during the peak
seasons of 2009 and 2010. The Chinese stations have generally been anemic,
though, following the Japanese NHK station trend.

Gary, I'm finding this DX season somewhat unusual, as well. Whereas other
years have yielded almost no TP reception after early/mid November, this
season has shown that there is some audio on most mornings. I agree that
it hasn't been anything spectacular, but even receiving a few stations
seems unusual. 73, Walt

 Hello All,

Although the recent TP-DX season has generally featured weaker signals
(and less exotic DX) than the exciting years of 2009 and 2010, there were
some interesting exceptions. Four Asiatic mainland TP's managed their best
signals ever here in Puyallup recently, including 1566-HLAZ only three days
ago. Two other Korean big guns (972-HLCA and the 1053-Jammer) routinely
pegged the S/N display on the PL-380 Ultralight in early October; in fact,
972-HLCA's monster signal on October 5th was the strongest TP signal ever
received here in 6 years of DXing. The other Asiatic TP reaching its
best-ever signal level this season was 603-China (presumed Hulun Buir),
which has apparently has had some type of antenna upgrade to enable it to
dominate the frequency here recently. On the other hand, the Japanese NHK
stations were real underperformers here this past season, with none of them
even coming close to their optimal signal levels.

For those interested, MP3 recording links for these best-ever TP signals
are pasted below. They were all received with hot-rodded (7.5 loopstick)
Ultralight radios and an 8 FSL antenna. With the exception of 603-China,
all of them easily pegged the Ultralight radio signal strength displays.

strongest TP signal ever received here in Puyallup

[IRCA] New 1220 St. Catharines application denied

2013-01-30 Thread Niel Wolfish
The CRTC has denied an application by 8045313 Canada Inc. for a broadcasting
licence to operate an English-language commercial AM radio station in St.
Catharines
and the Niagara Region, Ontario.

http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2013/2013-29.htm

This would have taken over the old 1220-CHSC facilities.

Good news for those of us still trying to log Radio Globo and CJRB-Boissevain

[IRCA] TP for 30 Jan 2013; Victoria version

2013-01-30 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Things seem to be gradually recovering, but not much of an enhancement at
sunrise, and best strengths were mostly around 1400UT.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

nope

reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

828 JOBB woman in JJ 1408UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could be
understood by a native speaker:

774 JOUB anthem at 1520UT today, followed by music box

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

612 woman talking 1406UT, maybe //738, will need to check the recording
tonight. If //, then 4QR
738 woman talking 1406UT, //612??
747 JOIB music box at 1521UT, first sign of it this morning
891 man talking, no parallels, 1404UT
972 HLCA? woman talking 1403UT
1575 VoA? man talking 1533UT, erratically fading

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

1458 1566

best wishes,

Nick
