Re: [IRCA] RF Conversion

2013-02-17 Thread Tim Hills

Craig,

I looked for something similar a while back and unless you have some
very deep pockets you might want to try a different solution unless you
want to home-brew something.

I use the twin coax that's used for satellite dishes. A balun on each
end and the center conductors fed as a balanced line or a balanced
preamp at the feed end with the power injector/DC block at the receiver
end. Oddly enough it seems to work best with the grounding block about
mid-point in the feed line. A 4:1 Balun wound with thin Litz on an
Amidon 43 material core seems to work best for the 50 Ohm input on the
receivers from ~60KHz to (over?) 30 MHz. I haven't tested the setup
above the 10m band.

I have 3 MW stations putting fat signals into my back yard and the line
runs right past the breaker box and I get very little noise pickup.

Just my $0.02

loss than cable.

I began with Google search of: RF analog to fiber optic conversion
That seemed to indicate that there is equipment to do that, and not
hugely expensive.

FWIW, maybe other people can find something as well.

[IRCA] W4HM Discussion Of Daily Solar Space And Geomagnetic Weather

2013-02-17 Thread Thomas F Giella W4HM

W4HM DISCUSSION OF DAILY SOLAR SPACE AND GEOMAGNETIC WEATHER-

For Saturday February 16, 2013

Solar activity is low as far as the emergence of the number of new sunspot
groups. Currently there are 3 new un-numbered sunspot groups and 4 existing
numbered sunspot groups.

Solar activity is low as far as the number of new solar flares, 4 occurred.
The largest solar flare in magnitude was a very small in size B5.3, which
occurred at approximately N12E32 and associated with sunspot group #11675.

On Sunday February 17th sunspot group #11675 magnetic complexity is growing
and at 0031 UTC produced a small in size C1.0 solar flare. Medium size M
class solar flares are possible.

The daily solar flux index (SFI) has been above 100 for 17 consecutive days,
currently at 104.5.

The daily sunspot number (SSN) has languished below 100 for 32 consecutive
days, currently (NOAA) at 75.

The geomagnetic field was other than quiet for one day with the Kp
(planetary) index in the a 3-4 range, unsettled to active geomagnetic
conditions. As collected by Potsdam Germany WDC the 3 hour Kp (planetary)
intervals were 10012331. As collected by NOAA/SWPC the 3 hour Kp (planetary)
intervals were 10012431.

The Dst ranged between +19 and -14.

Via SOHO the maximum and minimum solar wind values were 275-391.

The maximum background x-ray value was B2.1.

[IRCA] TP 17 Feb; Victoria version

2013-02-17 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Um, no sunrise enhancement at all today??? Or was it just because I
had another local noise maker arrive on the scene this morning,
thereby wiping out any enhancement? The regulars were doing OK
around 1430UT, and included a couple of apparent Aussies, but the
party was pretty much over by 1500UT

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

774 JOUB EE lessons man and woman 1428UT

reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

594 JOAK man and woman in JJ 1427UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be

understood by a native speaker:

828 JOBB EE language lessons //774 1429UT
972 HLCA woman in KK 1430UT, lots of splatter
1287 JOHR pop mx followed by woman in JJ 1432UT
1566 HLAZ woman in CC 1458UT, first and last appearance of the morning

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

612 4QR? telephone interview, two men, DU EE inflection and um...
heard, but mostly too murky. 1456UT (this was enhancement?)

702 JOKD/JOFB EE lessons //774 1429UT
747 JOIB EE lessons //774 1428UT
891 JOHK vocal mx //594 at 1432UT
1116 4BC? woman talking apparently EE, as heard 500 years mentioned 1434UT

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by
splatter) (several of these with near imaginary audio; given the
imaginary aspect, didn't report as audio, hi):

909 1242 1269

best wishes,

Nick

Some unIDs for better ears...

730 to west after my local sunset. I thought I heard 'NewsRadio' which promoted
me to save the recording. I don't hear that now, but there is a mention of 730
and mostly stuff that seems unintelligible. Possibly a W. Hoping someone can
make more of this than I can.

1220 has some ads on a station that I think is WZBK in Keene NH. I had ESPN
there with strong reception across the band to ME and MA just prior to these
ads. A few weeks ago, separately, I had NBC Sports Radio on 1220. Does WZBK
actually run NBC Sports Radio as well as ESPN? Are there other possible
candidates for NBC Sports Radio? I know Mexico PA carries ESPN. NBC Sports
radio lists only WZBK. But WZBK's web site does not acknowledge this. This
recorded reception was prior to my local sunset.

WZBK is ESPN. I doubt that they'd have NBC Sports Radio, which is a competitor.
Normally ESPN frowns on that. But there is a local ad mentioning Keene at
roughly 1:17+

NBC Sports radio's site is either plain wrong or out of date as I've found a
few cases like this, most recently WCMI-1340.

On 730, you did hear a W call starting at :24. I'm about 90% certain it's
WLTQ-SC, which has always ( despite about 100 call changes ) gotten out well at
sunset.

[IRCA] WZBK 1220 unID solved!

2013-02-17 Thread Chernos Saul

Re my 1220 unID - it's settled as WZBK. Thanks, Russ and Mike!
It's an ad for Gerkens at 485 Marlboro St. Keene. It does electronics repairs.
You can hear the word 'electronics' on the clip.
www.gerkens.info reveals the company started in 1964 - which is mentioned in
the ad.
The clip is still up there for anyone who wants to hear it.
WZBK is a new catch, leaving me only a station in CT for DX to the east on 1220.
Again, appreciated!

I'm fairly certain your 730 is WJMT-WI. If you listen very carefully, it starts
out with a Paralyzed Veterans of America PSA. This rules out CKDM or any
other Canadians. To my ears, the announcer sounds like Paul Harvey. There are
two mentions of the Paralyzed Veterans of America, the second one being around
0:21. Immediately following that you can clearly hear Country 730…
unintelligible… unfortunately, this part is less clearWJMT???. The
Country 730 is however clear, and WJMT's website confirms that slogan.
Unfortunately, they do not seem to have a livestream, so it might be difficult
to ascertain whether this fits their programming style.

any other Canadians. To my ears, the announcer sounds like Paul Harvey. There
are two mentions of the Paralyzed Veterans of America, the second one being
around 0:21. Immediately following that you can clearly hear Country 730…
unintelligible… unfortunately, this part is less clearWJMT???. The
Country 730 is however clear, and WJMT's website confirms that slogan.
Unfortunately, they do not seem to have a livestream, so it might be
difficult to ascertain whether this fits their programming style.

730 to west after my local sunset. I thought I heard 'NewsRadio' which
promoted me to save the recording. I don't hear that now, but there is a
mention of 730 and mostly stuff that seems unintelligible. Possibly a W.
Hoping someone can make more of this than I can.

Dave, I'm not seeing WATX listed on either the UT or Vanderbilt radio networks.
Might this contest (a women's game today betwen the two teams) perhaps have
been a broadcast on a national network instead, like DialGlobal?  Sounds like
this could have been an out-of-state all-sports station that you heard.

2013-02-17 Thread Rick Dau

Good job of checking into this, Jim.  Rockford's team is called the IceHogs,
and looking at their website (www.icehogs.com), it doesn't look like any local
station is covering their games this year, although WNTA 1330 was as recently
as 3 years ago.  The Lake Erie team is called the Monsters, and their games, as
you mentioned, are on WHKZ-1440, so that's very likely what George heard.

[IRCA] Using the #MWDX Hashtag on Twitter

2013-02-17 Thread Stephen Ponder
Sometime in the not-too-distant past, I remember reading an article in a radio
journal that suggested the use of the #MWDX hashtag on Twitter as a means of
disseminating DX tips/catches to other DXers. Is this method still being
suggested?

I have been doing this during my Insomniac DX sessions (usually past midnight
local time, 0600 UTC) and the only tweet that I've received was from a
shady woman in Monterrey, NL, México, in response to my tweet about Radio
Esperanza, 1140 kHz. It was VERY obvious she was not a DXer, if you know what I
mean ...

Are we supposed to respond to #MWDX tweets or treat them simply as DX alerts?
Maybe I've had the wrong mindset all along.

Stephen, I don't know about the #MWDX hashtag on Twitter, but a bunch of us on
these listservers are active in the #MWDX room on www.starchat.net.  All it
takes is to download Java, and you can get onto Starchat, then find us in the
#MWDX room.  It's the only DX-oriented livetime chatroom that I know of on the

If you're concerned about the need to install and use Java, there is another
alternative: install an IRC client and connect directly to the StarChat
network instead of logging in through the web interface. This eliminates the
need for Java and provides a more stable connection.

Since I use Linux, I don't have any specific recommendations for Windows IRC
clients, but this article looks like a useful guide:
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-7-free-irc-clients-windows-7/
Perhaps some Windows (and Apple?) users who already use IRC will chime in
with further suggestions. For Linux, I like the XChat client.

C'mon in, the water's fine!

Heard in Albany, NY too, though I did not log this because some digging
around showed WHKZ as a Lake Erie Monsters affiliate. I wasn't able to
determine if I was hearing Rockford or Warren, OH, so it went unlogged.

[IRCA] Three new ones at SSS

2013-02-17 Thread Dave Hascall
Listened from about 1805-1850 EDT, as I inch toward 300 Ultralight logs.
Added three new ones to the overall logbook, as well! Listened on the
Tecsun PL-606. Greart cx to the South and SE.

720 WGCR NC Pisgah Forest 2-17 1805 Good w/S. Gospel. Equal w/WGN @ times.
Relog but new to ULR log. DH-IN

780 WWOL NC 2-17 1811 Good w/Southern Gospel. Abruptly gone at 1813 power
cut (or outright sign off), leaving WBBM in the clear. No ID but given the
direction, the time of disappearance and the strength of WGCR, this one is
counted. NEW!! Domestic 780 #3! DH-IN

820 WVSG OH Columbus 2-17 1822 Loud w/Catholic service. First time heard
with these calls. Relog but new to ULR log. DH-IN

1090 WAQE WI Rice Lake 2-17 1830 Good w/Fox Sports and some local WI
scores. NEW! DH-IN

1600 WATX TN Algood 2-17 1848 Loud at times w/U of TN - Vanderbilt NCAAW
Basketball. Local ads at a timeout, nailed it. NEW! DH-IN

DH-IN = Dave Hascall Indianapolis, IN Tecsun PL-606

ULR count at 296 (Domestic + Foreign), with overall logbook (US/Canadian
only) at 837.

Re: [IRCA] WATX 1600 TN on late

2013-02-17 Thread Dave Hascall
I emailed Rick, offlist but local ads at a time out (lots of Cookeville
mentions) nailed it. May have been a conference network game as the
broadcasters did not seem aligned with either team.

 ?
Dave, I'm not seeing WATX listed on either the UT or Vanderbilt radio
networks. ?Might this contest (a women's game today betwen the two teams)
perhaps have been a broadcast on a national network instead, like
DialGlobal? ?Sounds like this could have been an out-of-state all-sports
 station that you heard.?
