[IRCA] KCJJ-1630 to become "99 Plus" on Fri. March 1st

2013-02-27 Thread Rick Dau

Well, for 9 hours, anyway...

At 3:00 p.m. Central Time on March 1st, KCJJ will cease normal programming and
will be taken over by "99 Plus".  From 1973 until it signed off at 3:00 p.m. on
March 1st, 1994, 99 Plus, under the call letters of KFMH, was an underground
rock station based out of Muscatine, Iowa and served a large area of eastern
Iowa and western Illinois.  It was a station that didn't conform to the
rulesthey played anything and everything, and the most unique part about it
is that it was ALL-request, 24/7.  As a result, the station built up a fiercely
devoted following, and when it signed off for the final time, over 500 people
showed up at their studios to protest (to give you some idea of how much it is
still missed, the recently-constructed Facebook page dedicated to 99 Plus has
over 1100 likesnot bad for a station that's been silent for 19 years!).

In recent months, KFMH's former general manager, "Captain" Steve Bridges (the
current GM and morning show co-host of KCJJ), who said for years that he would
never bring the format of the Plus back again to any station, has warmed to the
idea of resurrecting the Plus as an internet-only station.  To operate it,
however, he has stressed that it will take $20,000 for 1 year's worth of
programming, and that the money would have to come from public contributions.
Since Bridges made the announcement in January, he has raised over half of the
total required.  Friday's temporary switchover will essentially serve as a
fund-raiser to try to rake in the rest, and will feature many of the same DJs
that were an important part of 99 Plus back in the day.  At Midnight local
time, the carriage will turn back into a pumpkin (IMHO) , but it's hoped that
the interest generated by this will help to bring back 99 Plus on a permanent
basis online.  The audio from these
9 hours will not only be broadcast on 1630 AM, but will also be streamed on
KCJJ's website:

    http://www.ustream.tv/channel/kcjj-raw

And you can find out more about 99 Plus here:

    https://www.facebook.com/ThePlusPirateRadio

I hope you'll be able to check out KCJJ's webstream at some point during these
9 hours and get a taste of what I so enjoyed listening to during my years in
eastern Iowa in the late 1980s and early 1990s.  :)

[IRCA] TP 27 Feb; Victoria version

2013-02-27 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Signals were reasonable on the low band when I tuned in at 1430UT,
but mostly went downhill after that. NHK2 had yet another s/off time
today, starting the music box at 1455UT

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

not quite

reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

594 JOAK instrumental mx 1443UT, JJ talk at a lower level a few minutes earlier
747 JOIK EE lessons //774 1429UT
774 JOUB EE lessons 1429UT
828 JOBB EE lessons //774 1430UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be

understood by a native speaker:

639 CNR1 woman in CC //6125 1434UT
972 HLCA woman in KK 1450UT; best signal noted on this one this
morning, so there was "some" enhancement

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

567 JOIK man in JJ //594 1431UT
612 4QR? man talking DU EE inflection 1435UT
891 woman talking, not //594, 1432UT
1116 4BC? woman talking DU EE inflection 1437UT
1566 traces of mx 1430UT, never much better than this.

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

2013-02-27 Thread d1028gary

Hi Nick,

It was great to see you (and Theo, Chuck, Guy, Tom, Bruce, Phil and others) at
Bruce's get-together on Saturday. At least for me, the best aspect of these
meetings is the chance to reassure each other that we are still halfway normal
individuals, despite our tendency to sacrifice sleep and comfort to chase the
same big-gun TP's over and over each morning.

The band was full of promising low-band TP signals here around 1415 this
morning (594, 603, 738, 747, 828, 972, 1134, 1566 and 1575), but without any
sunrise enhancement boost the Asians soon fizzled out, one by one. 972-HLCA and
1566-HLAZ were the sole survivors after 1500 (both with fair signals, in and
out), but they soon bit the dust as well.

Hi Derek,

Sorry, Derek, but no video was shot of the get-together. I thought about
bringing my camcorder to record the event, but figured that my chances of
escaping in one piece after recording our (mature) appearances would be slim.

[IRCA] FEB 27 TA Feeding Frenzy

2013-02-27 Thread Jim Renfrew

Jim Renfrew, Holley NY

Hi everyone, sorry for the multiple posts last night. All my roadrunner
posts were proliferating as endless duplicate messages, and I still can't
stop it. Roadrunner says, "not us", and Microsoft (Outlook) says "we no
longer service XP owners (but we'll solve it for you for $99)", so I'm using
Yahoo for the moment. I get e-mail fine, just can't send it out on
Roadrunner.

This was an incredible night, and lot of might-have-beens because my Perseus
won't function with my new Windows 7 laptop. So these loggings were done
the old fashioned way, by spinning the dial.

FEB 27

0510zOn getting Barry's tip (thanks!), and with my Kaz coax retrieved
from the snow piles earlier in the day a quick run through the top of the
band gave 1557 France (relog), 1575 I initially called this "Italy", but now
I'm not so sure with such a pipeline into Spain. There were two stations on
1575 but when I went back there was barely anything. I've previously logged
Spain and Italy on 1575. 1584 also had a signal - possibly much wanted
Radio Ole, but on my return there wasn't much there.

0513z1521SPAINSERCastello"Cadena SER" ID, // to web
audio vis Delicast. I went right past this the first time figuring it was
the usual Saudi, and even reported it as such last night. But when I passed
it by again it was Spanish, and simply smashing through WWKB 1520 in nearby
Buffalo. I don't expect to see this one any time soon. NEW.

0515z1602SPAINRadio Vitoria, VitoriaSER, I figured, but not
//, so I found Radio Vitoria on Delicast, and voila, that was it, about ten
seconds delayed on the web audio. The TA pipeline seems aimed at Baque
country and Galicia. Very good signal. NEW.

0517z1476SPAINEuzkadi IrratiaDonostiMan and woman
speaking, electronic music at tune-in, // to web audio via Delicast. I
listened to this one the most and noted a "Euzkadi Irratia Noticias" after
4+1 pips at 0600. While it sounded Spanish in its cadences, it was odd, so
most likely Basque language or "Basquish" that I was hearing. NEW.

00251539SPAINSERManresa and Elx synchros// to web audio
via Delicast, slight echo noted, so I heard both of them, I suppose, but I
seem to recall from Newfoundland that Elx has been noted with separate
programming - though this recollection may be be way out of date. NEW.

0034z1485SPAINSERsynchros// web audio via Delicast.
Very weak. NEW.

0035z1413SPAINRNEsynchrospresumed, very weak, previously
logged..

0036z1386SPAINEuzkadi IrratiaBilbao// 1476, though much
weaker. NEW.

0038z1314SPAINRNEsynchros// RNE web audio via Delicast.
NEW.

0039z1287SPAINSERsynchros// 1521. NEW.

0039z1206FRANCEnoted in passing, relog.

0040z1152SPAINRNEsynchrosSpanish noted in passing,
relog.

0041z1143SPAINCOPEsynchrosSpanish // web audio via
Delicast and 1134. NEW.

0041z1134SPAINCOPEsynchrosSpanish // web audio via
Delicast and 1143, relog.

0044z1107SPAINRNEsynchrosSpanish, fairly strong, none of
the off-channel het heard in recent years, relog.

0045z1089UKTalkSPortsynchrosweak

0045z999SPAINCOPEMadridSpanish, COPE presumed, relog so
I moved on.

0045z990UNIDSPAIN?My local 990 was missing or beaten down by
Montreal and possibly Spain.

Not much else to dig into after this. But nine new TAs in one night is a
unique experience here. Though every one of these is a pest in
Newfoundland!

Notable in their absence: 909, 855 from Spain, and 945 and 1377 from
France. I guess the best stuff was at the upper range. I still can't get
over the powerful signal on 1521. Not only do I have WWKB 1520, but WASB
1590 (I can see their tower light from my house) puts out a nasty spur
around 1521.

[IRCA] TAs Yet Again!

2013-02-27 Thread Barry McLarnon
Very spotty tonight, and not a Spanish feeding frenzy like last night, but
still quite interesting. Conditions seem to favor France tonight, e.g., a
huge signal on 1557 busting through the Disney din, and also very good on
1377. A new logging here is Radio Maria on 1467, with religious music //
their web stream.
